The lesser evil

Chapter 1

A good idea

Soon it will be the 1000 years anniversary of his death, Caroline Forbs sat in her office thinking of him and their time together having a glass of bourbon. Niklaus Mikaelson was many things to her, and being her last love was his promise to her. She didn't think that he would be right, but almost a 1000 years later, she had come to love the memory of him. Caroline hadn't had any love interest since her last goodbye with him, she couldn't, it felt wrong for her, no one could ever be close to what he was, and the feelings he brought up in her.

Being the headmistress of the Salvator boarding school and helping all creatures learn and come to realize their great potential, she took great pride in her accomplishments. Having said goodbye many times to the people she loved and had learned to understand that mortality was beautiful. She would remember what Klaus told her once, back when she and her friends were looking for the vampire cure. About how a hummingbird flew up to him and he could hear its heartbeat.

She would find herself thinking back to conversations she had had with him many times over the centuries. Feeling regretful and sorrowful, if she ever wanted something it would be him, alive and seeing the world how it has changed. All the creatures that attend her school, he wouldn't believe his eyes. Seeing his daughter Hope Mikaelson, teach history and being a mentor for werewolves, witches and vampires. He would be so proud of her.

Caroline took another sip of bourbon, leaning back in the chair. A knock came from the door. "Come in" Caroline said. The door opened and in came Hope Mikaelson. "Are you really doing this again?" Hope asked with a conserved look. "I guess I am" Caroline said with a half-smile. "So, is this going to be your thing now? Every year around dad's death you'll be drinking the days away and isolating yourself? I mean look at yourself! I lost him too and I have accepted that he wanted to die protecting his family. Why are you acting this way so many years later?" Hope said in a distressed voice with concern for Caroline. "You really want to know. Fine I'll tell you but don't laugh. I love your father. I miss him and I hate myself for not realizing it back then and not telling him. In a few hours it will be his 1000 years anniversary." Caroline said in between sipping her bourbon and taking long pauses, she was tipsy.

Hope couldn't believe her ears, the women who she saw and treated as her mother figure, loved her father. Hope´s eyes had shot open after Caroline´s love confession. Caroline continued "I keep remembering him more and more as time passes it's like he´s haunting me." Caroline had finished her glass and was pouring another shot for herself. "But I know it's just my guilt. And no amount of time can make me feel any better than remembering him." Hope took a glass and brought it to the desk, gesturing to Caroline to pour her a shot too. Caroline continued her sad speech that she didn't know she needed to tell. "If I could be so selfish, I would wish to go back in time to be with him to change his future to change everything. Every year on his death, I´ll had ideas of going back 2000 years to the time he was just changed into a vampire and being his strength his light, warning him of the dangers, hell even starting this school earlier and being prepared sooner for all the dangers we have faced." Caroline had poured Hope a glass while she talked. Taking sips and talking slowly with a tipsy voice.

Hope interrupted "actually that's a good idea, we know that parallel timelines do exist and having to transfer you to a different timeline to the beginning of everything, could work and is possible." Caroline looked at Hope with shock. "Do you mean it? But what about this timeline and all of you? I can't just leave." Caroline said. "Yes, I mean it, and don't be concerned with everyone here they will understand, since it's for the better good of all. specially you Caroline." Hope concluded and sat her glass down. "You have brought so many creatures to this town from all over the world and they didn't come because of the school, but because they believed in your vision of a better world, where we help each other and co-exist side by side. Mystic Falls has never been a better place for supernatural creatures. Heck you have never had a bad idea and if you wish to go back and start this school and make my father happy 2000 years in the past, I say we find a way. You can sit here and drink your bourbon Caroline while I talk to the ancestors and the other witches." with that said Hope was out the door leaving Caroline in disbelief.

Never had Caroline been more conflicted about her choice but that was her deep wish. She had drunk her bourbon and was about to pour herself another one when she heard a knock on the door. "Come in" she said while pouring a shot in her glass. In came two student girls. They looked angry. One of the girl's hair was burned and the other looked guilty. "Girls please sit down and tell me why you are here." The girls sat down on the two chairs across from Caroline´s headmistress desk, where she was sitting. "Amber burned my hair in class" the girl with the burned hair said. "Amber why did you do that" Caroline asked the young girl. "Because she was looking at my boyfriend and I didn't like it. So, I thought how fun it would be to see her hair burn, that's when my magic reacted and it happened, I can't say I didn't mean to, no one looks at my boyfriend." Amber proclaimed. "I didn't mean to look at him, I don't even like him, he is the one who talked to me first." The girl said. "You slut, I don't believe you! You flirt with all the boys, but you can't have him, not him." Amber yelled at the girl. "Amber, Miranda didn't do anything and its normal to talk to your classmates, also you should have more faith in you boyfriend, he is with you, right? Amber please apologies to Miranda." Amber looked calmer and she looked at Miranda "I'm sorry for burning your hair." the girls left the headmistress office after that.

Caroline found the argument normal, and this has happened a few times over the years, but Miranda was the next doubleganger, so Amber's concern was not misplaced. The doubleganger was back and stirring up trouble for the young students. Just like old times. Miranda was on her first year so she was new to many things, but boy trouble can't have been one of them. Caroline took another sip of her glass, thinking back to her school years, remembering her friends who are all now dead. She made a toast for the dead who will never be forgotten.

The school day came to an end, and she was about to head out the door, when it knocked one the door. "Come in" Caroline said sitting back down in her chair. Hope came in and sat down in a chair. She announced "I talked to the ancestors and the witches. They both like the idea and are willing to help you transcend time and space." Caroline was shocked she had no words "Aren't you happy?" Hope asked looking currishly at Caroline. "Yes, I am. this is amazing news, I never expected that in one day and with no persuasion that the ancestors and the witches would agree. Also, the pressure I have been put in. That my selfish wish is about to be grated and I can help build a better world for all creatures. And that I will see him again." Caroline looked at her empty glass, debating if she should pour one more time to celebrate. "We talked about how we should go about doing this and the witches think it's best to have you turned into an origin vampire at the moment you arrive in the past. The ancestors will send a message to the timeline you will be send to that the ancestors there should help you with anything you ask. You will be the only vampire that the ancestors will help and, in the message, will be clear instructions that you are good, and you will not let any harm come to the innocent. This is also perfect since we will need the doublegangers blood, I don't think Miranda would mind donating a little blood for the greater good." Hope said. "Thank you Hope" Caroline said and poured Hope and herself a shot of bourbon.

"When will I be departing?" Caroline asked while taking a sip. "We can do the spell tonight it's a full moon, if you're ready to start your journey into the past." Hope said also taking a sip. Caroline brought her glass up to make a toast and said, "Then cheers to the new head mistress Hope Mikaelson and to a greater future." Hope brings her glass up to Carolines making a sound with the glasses. "Thank you, Caroline, for all you have done and for being here for all of us, I hope to do you proud. I will do my best as your prodigy." the two women took a sip of the bourbon and set the glasses down. "Met me at the ritual circle in 2 hours, that should give you enough time to find a dress that is appropriate for the time period and get some blood in a flask to bring with you." Hope said as she headed for the door. "Thank you Hope" Caroline said.

Making her way down to the ritual circle, located next to the training grounds. Caroline had found a suitable dress in blue and bags in leather where she had 4 bottles made from clay filled with blood, B-positive, and some tools she would be needing to make a house as a beginning for the establishment. She wanted to make a stone castle in the past Mystic Falls and have it become the school. She imagined something as grand as the castles she had visited in Europe. Caroline was exiting for what was to come.

Entering the ritual circle, she saw all the witches from the school and the town. Every witch was here. But not just them when she got closer, she saw that the whole town and all her student were here too. And they were dresses formally.

"Caroline, Headmistress of the Salvator school and founder of Mystic Falls for all creatures. We have all gathered here to wish you goodbye and hope that you will take care of the better past. We will celebrate this day as the day of change for the next years to come. This day will be known as the day we lost our headmistress but gained a great hero of time and space." Peter, the head of the council of creatures, spoke to everyone but looked at Caroline. "Thank you all for coming to see me off. I will never forget any of you." Caroline said with tears in her eyes.

"Caroline we are ready to send you though space and time, but first you need to know some things." Hope said while beckoning her closer to the center of the circle of rituals. Caroline walked to the center and stood next to Hope. "This bottle has Miranda´s blood in it, you are to drink it when you arrive, it will make you into an original. This talisman, I put it on a necklace, will protect you from werewolf bites and hybrid bites. This ring will protect you from most dangers and sunlight. You can replace it with the one you have. Also, this bag has 10 daylight rings to start you off, the people you turn will most likely be there to help you build a better future." Hope said and smiled at Caroline giving her the things and hugging her. Caroline put everything in her bags and turned to everyone. "I hope to do you all proud thank you all for the time we have spent together, I will never forget you." Caroline said now with tears streaming down her face.

The witches and Hope took their positions and started chanting. Caroline stood still in the center surrounded by all the witches. A wind started blowing and the clouds gathered over them. Thunder could be heard and the people from town retreaded further back. Caroline felt her vision blur and she started to feel dizzy. A lighting strickled her, and she was knocked unconscious. The spell worked. Caroline was no longer in the center of the ritual circle.
