Miracle Prompt
Test
Jaune leaned against the hallway wall of his house as he counted the minutes in his head. He could feel his stomach churning as he awaited the results. The feeling was all too familiar, but it never got any easier.
At this point in his young life, the blonde wasn't bothered by much, but there were some things that could cut deep and this was one of them. The last few attempts hadn't gone as planned and Jaune had relegated himself to that of not being worthy enough to do what Ruby and himself had set out to do. The once insecure boy that had arrived at Beacon was still a part of him, and he hated it.
More than himself, he feared what another disappointment could do to Ruby and what she wanted. He had seen the look on her face far too many times than he could bear and even though she tried to keep up her glowing demeanor, there was only so much one person could take. He wanted this, but more than him, he knew she wanted this.
They were old enough. They were financially safe. They were married.
These things went through his mind as Jaune clasped his hands together in prayer as he remained seated in that same hallway. He never knew something that some people took for granted could show to be so difficult. He pitied anyone in the same position as they were.
"I don't know if you really exist or not God," Jaune spoke in a low tone. "but cut us some slack, please. Even huntsman and huntresses need a break sometimes."
As he spoke, he could feel the tightening in his chest. He didn't know if it was his anxiety or the feeling of his heart slowly breaking as he could only predict the same result. He wasn't one to beg some existential entity, but it wasn't beneath him at this point. He would do anything for this. Anything for her.
Jaune looked towards the bathroom as he heard a faint noise. He wasn't sure what it was, but what disturbed him was the sound of what he could only imagine was a body hitting the floor thereafter followed by crying.
No. No, please. Jaune realized with wide eyes, wasting no time scrambling to his feet and making his way to the door. He took a deep breath as he listened to what he gathered were small sobs on the other side.
It's always the same.
Jaune readied himself for his wife. This had finally been the straw that broke the Grimm's back. His heart sank further as he attempted a stern face and cracked the door open.
"Hey Rubes?" He questioned as he slowly poked his head in through the door.
The sight of his wife on her knees, both hands in front of her face as she wept, being the first thing he saw. His bottom lip trembled as he clutched the doorway in frustration. Was this all they could do? Experience this same pain with every attempt?
When she didn't answer, Jaune wasted no time opening the door and walking towards her. He knew this time was different. It had broken her. Ruby Rose had finally taken that critical hit. It wasn't fair. She wanted this. Sure, she wanted many things, but she would trade this for any desire. She deserved it. Happiness.
Her sniffles continued as he knelt down to her, placing a hand on both of her shoulders. He hadn't even looked her in her gorgeous silver eyes yet and he was already on the verge of tears. How was he going to handle this?
Slowly, Ruby dropped her hands from her face, revealing tear-stricken cheeks and irritated eyes as she did her best to wipe the moisture from her face as her breath hitched. She hadn't spoken and Jaune felt his world crumbling around him. They could fight off Grimm, and they could save the world, but none of that mattered. There was no fight here.
"Jaune…" Ruby finally tried, hiccupping slightly. "I… I…"
Jaune wasted no time wrapping her in his arms tightly, not wanting to let her say another word on the matter. His job was to protect her from all things. He promised Tai that he would do just that, but this… it was too much for either of them.
"Don't worry about it, Ruby." He attempted. "We will figure this out. So, please... just don't."
He could feel her arms moving about from beneath him as he clutched her tightly, his own tears now too powerful enough for him to hold back. He felt resistance in his embrace as Ruby struggled against him.
"Please Jaune, we need to look at this." Her breath catching between words.
Jaune clinched his fists in agony as he knew what was to come. That realization was pain. Nothing but pain.
He released her from the hug as he pulled away slowly, lurching forward on both knees. He knelt there, unmoved as Ruby grabbed the parcel from the floor, the initial noise he heard from the hallway, undoubtedly.
She presented it before him as he took it gently from her hands. With a solemn breath, he finally moved to see something he hadn't expected. Something that caused his tears to flow now rather than barely escape as the wetness dripped onto what he was holding.
Two pink lines.
He looked to Ruby as she continued weeping as well, but with a weak smile now adorning her face. He never imagined it would actually happen.
Jaune dropped the small pregnancy test to the floor as he fell forward, his arms catching his weight on floor in instinct. He didn't know what to say in this instance and decided to let out a primal roar in raw emotion, no longer able to bottle it inside.
He felt the warmth of Ruby's hand on his back, rubbing him gently as he remained there for several minutes. Not long after, finally feeling a sense of composure, he lifted his head to meet her gaze once more, face puffy and swollen.
"A-Are you sure?" He questioned, still in disbelief.
"I took two." She answered immediately, her lips quivering. "It's why I took so long."
Without another word, Jaune grabbed her and pulled her into him forcefully. It was all he could think to do as he continued to sob. Ruby returned the embrace this time, continuing to rub his back as he cried deeply.
"I love you." He worded between gasps. "I have no words for this… I really don't."
"I love you," She answered with a calm voice enjoying the moment they had wanted for so long. "and our little miracle."
