This is the offering to Kadam Week 2017 prompt 7: One of the guys is stressing out over a pending event. How does the other get him through it?
What Adam found a little bit amusing was the fact that while during the first two trimesters he had been the one with fluttering nerves and worries about the whole affair.
While his husband had been his rock, setting up all the lawyers appointments to guarantee Adam had the same rights on their child even without being biologically related to them, making it airtight. Kurt had made sure each doctor appointment was scheduled so that they both could be there.
During that time Adam found comfort in how both Kurt and Brittany had repeatedly soothing any worry about the fact it was all good; that everything was going to be fine.
Or as Brittany said "Family is a place where everybody loves you no matter what, and they accept you for who you are⦠We already are a family, adding a child to that wouldn't be such a big change, just someone new to love"
She was also adamant in saying that the child would never wonder if Kurt and Adam were their parents.
Because clearly being blond with blue eyes, she might totally pas basically Adam's sister, and they even were alike in temperament, so any child with Kurtie's and her genes would become the smartest and sweetest of children, and more important the child was going to look like Adam and Kurt had the baby themselves without any outside help.
When the blond dancer had come forward with her offer, given in private as wedding gift four years before, Adam thought it was one of the well meaning offers that no one would ever collect.
For one, while it was true they were both financially stable at that time, neither of them had any big break, and true they had already been together five years before Kurt and he decided to get married.
So it wasn't even a matter of their stability as a couple, but Brittany was a dancer and Adam, while appreciative of the offer to be their surrogate, was not so sure she could really afford to pause her career for the time of a pregnancy.
The fact that both Kurt and himself were quite happy on their own, was another reason why talks of becoming parents had not been discussed in details, that was until almost nine months ago when the blond woman came to their house crossed and asked why they didn't want their baby.
That she wanted to be the favourite aunt already and get started with the spoiling, then she asked if they had changed their mind, because she was still sure they would be the best dolphins to take care of a precious cabbage baby.
And that was how all their hypothetical talks had been put on the test and before either of them could raise more doubts Brittany had asked directly "Would you love any baby coming into your life and do the best you could in whatever circumstances you were?"
At their resolute "Yes " and "Of course" Brittany had clapped her hands smiling excited and simply said "Perfect Lord Tubbington was right and it's now time so Kurtie Adam get your coats we have an appointment in an hour at the clinic and it takes forty minutes to get there from here"
Throughout the pregnancy, Brittany had been a doll, sweet and always super excited with every small change in her body and change with the baby.
All three of them agreed on not asking for the sex, which was good because their baby loved to keep the cord between their legs at every sonogram.
She made sure to let them know she was taking all the precautions needed like Lord Tubbington said, so she took good care of their precious diamond, as she didn't want to risk the baby having troubles emerging from the cabbage under which the diamond was supposed to be placed.
While sometimes it was hard to understand what the sweet girl talked about, no one could ever doubt her heart was in the right place.
The closer the birth date came, the more Adam's nerves settled.
They had already made all the needed improvements in their home, all the legal matters had been settled and were just waiting for the actual birth and the birth certificate.
The nursery was ready and their current project managers had been warned and the work to make the understudies comfortable to walk in was already bearing its fruits.
Their parents and friends had already been informed, visits had been arranged. Everything that could have been done before the arrival of their baby was done, now they only had to wait.
And that seemed to freak out Kurt more than anything else. While there was something to fret about, be it Adam's insecurities and worries, or any other possible factor that could be controlled. Like planning possible names that could satisfy the old world's superstition of making both the child's name and surname starting with the same initials, all the small rituals and things to take care of had kept Kurt strong and steady the majority of the time.
But now that the birth was so close, now that there would be no more doctor appointments, not until right before the birth, Kurt was starting to panic.
There was literally nothing else he could be in control of, except for work, and even that was limited.
The first night that Kurt was not in their bed, Adam allowed his husband a few hours of solitude, when before down Kurt had returned to their bed and snuggled close to him before falling asleep Adam hoped it was an isolated episode.
On the third night in a row Adam started to feel worried, especially because Kurt still hadn't said anything about it.
On the fifth night, Adam followed Kurt as soon as he had left the bed and found his husband pacing in the nursery.
Adam leaned against the door frame and called out softly "Love?"
Kurt stopped his worried pacing and looked up surprised at being discovered, silent tears running down his face before the dam broke and he gave voice to all his worries for the first time
"Oh Adam what if we're not ready? What if it was a horrible idea and I'm not ready to be a father and be horrible? What if we won't be able to provide our child with all their need? What if I'm going to make so many mistakes they'll grow up to hate me?"
Adam went and hugged Kurt, wrapping himself around his husband like a blanket, humming softly until the tears stopped falling and Kurt relaxed in his arms, forehead resting on Adam's shoulder.
Once Adam could hear and feel Kurt's breathing returning to a normal rhythm he sung softly in Kurt's ear "No time for second guessing"
That had the desired effect of making Kurt chuckle and singing back questioning with a small grin "It's time to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap?"
Adam chuckled back nodding "On the brighter side you're not going to fly solo in this adventure, we are in this together, we can only try to do our best, and I'm pretty sure even our parents didn't receive a manual on what to do with us, and yet I like to believe we've both grew up to be pretty good men ourselves."
And then with a tongue in cheek expression Adam sang softly as he started moving toward the door heaving for their bedroom "Come with me, think of what we could do, together"
Grinning and looking more like himself than he did before Kurt continued singing softly "Unlimited, together we're unlimited, together we'll be the greatest team there's ever been."
Adam let one of his hand caress gently Kurt's cheek "if we work in tandem, there's no fight we cannot win, just you and I, well are you coming to bed darling? We'll be even more ready to welcome our baby home if we start taking as much sleep as we can while we can"
Kurt smiled and nodded, singing in the middle of the night was not really going to solve the fears in his mind, but knowing the lengths his husband was willing to go just to make sure he was ok gave him the confidence that they could do this.
Raising their child, together. On one thing Adam was right, their baby would be home soon, it was too late for second guessing.
And any leftover doubts either of them had ended up disappearing the first time their daughter's small fingers wrapped around theirs.
