Take it Away Don't Look Down The Mountain

'If the world isn't turning your heart won't return anyone, anything, anyhow.'

"Hi," Meredith says to the baby, even though she said she wasn't interested in it.

"My Dad didn't want me, but he loves you, and your mom loves you, and your grandmother loves you, so I get that your life is hard right now, but if you live it'll be better," Meredith adds.

"Yeah, and then you'll have an Aunt. I hear her name is Lexie. I bet she's smarter than me," says Meredith.

"Dr. Grey-" Addison Montgomery cuts in, as she approaches the incubator.

"Dr. Sh- Mont- Addison," Meredith stumbles. "Sorry, I'm just getting used to it," Meredith brushes her hair through her hands.

"It's okay, so am I," Addison chuckles. "Well, she's looking better after her surgery. Alex did a good job there. And I did my best because people might have thought it was on purpose if something happened to her," Addison admits sheepishly.

"Yeah, I get that. Angry Thatcher can be kind of scary," you nod.

"I think it's nice, that you're checking up on her," Addison smiles.

"Oh I'm not," says Meredith. "I'm ah, I'm just up here, for another case," she lies.

"It's okay to care," Addison says softly.

"I don't," Meredith grumbles.

"It's sweet, I think it's sweet," says Addison.

"Yeah okay, but I wasn't here for her," Meredith continues lying.

"We all need a little human comfort," says Addison. "It's only natural."

"Okay," says Meredith, as she tries to push past Addison, but Addison stops her.

"Hey, are you doing okay?" says Addison. "I'm sorry I was so harsh on you earlier, I just really had to stabilize her in that surgery," she adds.

"I'm great," Meredith purses her lips together. "It's just, my life sucks. Generally, it just sucks. And she hasn't done anything wrong yet, like party too hard, or skip off a year of college to go backpacking in Europe, or sleep with somebody's husband… Sorry, Addison… It's just, she's harmless, and her life sucks, and that just sucks a whole lot," Meredith rambles.

"It does…" Addison says softly. "It does suck. Seeing them struggle, it's awful, and that part never changes…" she sighs.

"Yeah?" says Meredith.

"Yeah. But there are good parts too. When the babies recover when they get stronger. When they get to go home," Addison smiles a really big smile. "Those are the good parts."

"I bet," Meredith smiles softly.

"I can't put you back on this case as a doctor, but if you want updates, I can make that happen," Addison offers.

"Oh, that's alright," says Meredith. "But thank you, Addison," she smiles softly.

"You know it's been a long day. I could really use a vanilla latte," Addison sighs.

"You should ask Mark for one, or maybe Alex," says Meredith. "I told Alex to give one to Sloan to piss him off," Meredith says deviously.

"What, why?" Addison laughs.

"Because he was rude to you-" says Meredith, and then her eyes flicker open, and she looks into Addison's eyes.

And the green flecks in them start glowing gold, and Meredith starts leaning in, and Addison starts leaning in, and just as their lips are about to touch, a nurse barges in, and they jump away from each other.

"Oh, sorry-" says Addison.

"Sorry-" says Meredith.

They give each other a fumbling look before Meredith scampers out of the room again, and Addison lays her head down on Laura Grey-Thompson's incubator.

Fantastic. Really, just fantastic.
