Dear diary,

What is love without some pain? What is happiness without sorrow? Nothing would ever be the same. Not anymore. Not with this darkness welling up inside. I cannot breathe without him. I cannot live without him. How could he just take my heart, and damage it beyond repair? How will I ever be able to get through the day? Does he hurt? Or am I the only one suffering? So many questions, I ask myself, ask you, but I never receive a response. Maybe I don't want a response. Maybe I don't want to move forward or move on. Why should I? Is it so bad to love with every ounce of your being? Is that so bad? My heart, it aches…it's breaking in half, not being able to see his smile, to see him call my name…Bella. I want him to exist, I don't want him to disappear and leave me alone in this miserable world. Why would he take that from me? Take away the only joy that I have? Did he know that it would break me when he walked away? Does he truly not love me anymore? Are his words true? Is this even real, or am I just in a never-ending nightmare?

"Bella!" The voice of Jocelyn Fray called up the stairs to her. Jocelyn Fray was a small woman, voluptuous in the right places. Her auburn hair was perfect, tangling in a delicate wave that was usually caught pinned up with a clip. Her eyes were bright like emeralds. She was a sincere person, usually joyful, and quick to answer all your concerns. She was the perfect mom, the perfect everything.

For Bella, being the daughter of Jocelyn Fray was hard. She wasn't perfect, or beautiful. She was pale, thin, and looked nothing like her mother. She had dark hair that hung down her back, with slight waves and her amber eyes were far different than that of Jocelyn's. Clary on the other hand, looked a lot like Jocelyn. The brilliant strawberry red hair was beautiful curled down her back, and her own green eyes shimmered like a swirling jade in the sun. She was thin too, and a bit shorter than Bella, but Bella always thought that Clary got all the good genes in the family. Their father was killed. He was killed in the war, while Jocelyn was pregnant with Clary. Bella was the oldest. She was twenty-one, while Clary was eighteen. They still lived at home, while both attended University there in Brooklyn. Both were artists, but with different perspectives. Bella was more interested in paints and canvas like Jocelyn, while Clary was the sketch artist.

Bella closed her journal and got out of bed. Edward Masen, the pretty boy from high school. They dated from Junior year until Sophomore year in college. Last year. Last year they broke up, and he said that he didn't love her, that he never loved her and that he didn't want to be with her anymore. She didn't understand what all that meant. They were together four years. She was starting to think that he grew tired of waiting for her. She just wasn't ready to take their relationship to that sexual level. She didn't know why, but something in her told her that she had to wait. The timing was never perfect. And maybe that's what was wrong with her. She wanted things to be perfect, but they would never be perfect.

She trotted down the stairs. She was doing better, at least she was just internalizing things. She wasn't letting her mom know how much she was hurting. "Yes mom?"

"I bought some more of the watercolors you were needing for the project." Jocelyn said, her voice was slightly accented, while unpacking bags in the kitchen.

"Oh, thank you." Bella offered a smile; it was a fake smile. She didn't like to smile a lot, especially when she was feeling depressed still. She knew it was silly, to be so distraught after four months of being single. It was devastating to be so in love with someone, for them to just be gone, leaving you for whatever selfish reasons.

Jocelyn smiled. "When are you going to let me see your project?"

"When it's done. You know how I am with my paintings." Bella smiled.

Clary came through the door, her messenger bag looped on her shoulder. "Bella! My portrait, he graded it. He gave me an A!"

"That's good." Bella smiled. "I told you it looked amazing. You should listen to me from time to time." She teased.

"Ah, dinner with Luke, girls. Tomorrow night." Jocelyn reminded.

Clary blinked a few times. "Oh right. Mom, when are you going to just tell Luke you're going to marry him and live happily ever after?" She teased.

"It's not like that. You know that we're only friends." Jocelyn defended herself.

"Mhm, does he know that?" Clary asked.

Jocelyn raised a brow. "We're just friends. Aren't you going to that poetry reading tonight?" She changed the subject.

"Right, Bells, Simon and Eric are doing the poetry thing tonight." Clary said, leaning against the counter, batting her eyelashes at her older sister.

Bella sighed. "I'll go because Java Joe's has the best coffee." She said, and then smiled at her mom. "Thanks again for the paint mom." She said and then she left the kitchen, going upstairs and changed her clothes for the poetry reading. She thought it was nice that Clary and Simon were so close. For as long as Bella could remember, Simon lived next door, and he was Clary's best friend. He was a dork, but high school hit, and he turned into a cooler dork. He was in a band, and despite being a dork most of his life, he was really talented, Bella admitted. He had a cool tone for singing, and he was really good on the guitar. Eric was the one that she didn't understand. Why was he even part of Rock Steady Panda? And what kind of name was that.

She dressed casually like normal, just a pair of skinny jeans, a couple rips in the leg, and a long-sleeved, ribbed shirt that was a steel blue color. She left her hair down, and she attempted just some light mascara. She trotted back down the stairs and Clary was waiting for her. She changed her shirt and went with the same light mascara look. Neither one of them wore a lot of makeup.

"Have fun girls. Don't stay out too late." Jocelyn warned.

Bella and Clary opened the door to Luke. "Hi Luke, bye Luke." Bella and Clary said at the same time, and they pushed past him out the door and off to Java Joe's they went.

Luke was a strong looking man. His ebony skin looked perfect, and his eyes were a unique deep hazel color. He looked a Jocelyn. "They're all grown up." He smiled.

"They are." Jocelyn said with a smile. "Bella has been working on a painting. I'm going to take a look at it. She doesn't know I sneak a peak at her work before she's done, so no telling on me." She warned, and went into the art room that Bella used for her art. She flipped on a light and looked at the easel, the canvas was situated perfect. Jocelyn frowned. "Luke…"

"You need to talk to them. Jocelyn, they're not little girls anymore. It's clear that the block is wearing off. Either see Magnus soon, or tell them." Luke warned.

Jocelyn shook her head, looking at the canvas. There painted perfect was an angelic rune. The rune of a Shadowhunter.

The poetry reading was subpar. Eric was a bit too theatrical with his words, but that was Eric. After the reading was over, the girls, and Simon started walking back towards their townhouse.

Bella, even though she had been in a smog lately, after her and Edward, she was trying to be normal, for Clary's sake more than anything. She looked up at a sign to the new club that was open. Pandemonium. The sign read. The background held the symbol that she was painting for her project and she frowned. Did she subconsciously paint this symbol? She didn't recall it being there before.

"Bells?" Clary asked.

"Oh, hey, this is the new club." Bella murmured.

Clary looked up at the sign. "Pandemonium. Sounds cool. Want to check it out? It's not really late yet."

Bella was hesitant, but the symbol made her curious as to what it could mean. "Sure."

Simon raised a brow. "I don't think we're properly dressed for this." He put in.

Clary smiled. "Come with me." She grabbed both Bella's hand, and Simon's and pulled them in to the alley. She looked Bella over, and then she forced Bella to take her jacket off, it was a dark suede leather jacket that Bella loved a lot. It was her favorite jacket that she owned. Clary then had her take her arms out of her sleeves, and Clary did something with the loose arms.

"You're stretching the neck out." Bella complained.

"Oh hush." Clary said and then had Bella pull her jacket back on. Clary had tucked the sleeves in, keeping Bella's shoulders bare. The shirt was a looser fit shirt that Bella owned, so it was a little big on her, so it made this look actually not that bad. Clary was already looking nice. She had changed before coming out, changing her shirt into some tighter on her breast, so she didn't have to prep too much. Simon was dressed like a hipster, so she was sure he would get in too.

They approached the bouncer, and then the bouncer looked at them. He was a larger guy. His muscles were buff, veins popped as he flexed slightly, just to look intimidating.

"What does the symbol mean?" Bella found herself asked.

The bouncer looked at her confused. He wasn't sure what she meant. One of the guys that had been let in, overheard Bella's question and told the bouncer that the three were with him, and so they were allowed into the club. The man disappeared rather quickly, so Bella couldn't even thank him.

"This place is really cool." Clary said, smiling. The lights were strobing, and the music was really loud, but they were close enough together that they didn't have to shout too loud.

Bella saw the bar, and there were signs up for 18+ and then 21+. Which was pretty interesting she mused. She saw the man that had told the bouncer to let them in. He was peculiar looking, but so were a lot of the patrons that were currently, dancing and grinding against each other to the loud trap music that was blaring. His eyes were a bright neon blue, which she knew were contacts. His hair was black, like pitch, and was displayed wildly on his head. He wore tight leather, and he was extremely pale. He was your typical, what in the past, people would call goth. She looked to Clary. "I'll be right back." She said in her ear, and watched her sister dance with Simon swaying somewhat, while she tried weaving through the crowd of sweaty, sexed up people. She lost sight of him again and frowned. Where had he gone?

She looked around the crowd again, thinking maybe that he went back to the dance area, but he wasn't there. She spotted a woman, who was wearing a tight-fitting white dress. It was so strange to see because she was the only one wearing white. The dress was oriental in style, covering her neck, and then her arms as well. It shimmered slightly as the strobes hit the dress, making it take on a luminescent glow. Her hair was just as bright, a silvery blonde like platinum that hung in an inverted bob above her shoulders. She was too far for Bella to see how beautiful her face was.

The man was there again, and he was staring straight at the mysterious woman. He started following her, and for some reason, Bella decided too as well. There were several back areas in the club, and there wasn't much security there, and so she followed along silently, curiosity making her brave.

She stayed hidden in the shadows, watching as the woman turned to face the man now, a catlike grin on her face, and from here, Bella could tell that her eyes were dark, like a deep chocolate color, and she seemed like she had some sort of Spanish heritage, the cream of her skin tinted only slightly. But it was more in the structure of the woman's face. Bella remembered one art class that she had taken, was purely portraits and they had to practice drawing people from different ethnic backgrounds, and then woman fit one of the models that she remembered coming in that hailed from Spain.

The man drew her in close, his arm wrapping around her waist, but then he got a startled look on his face, and he pulled away. "You…" he muttered, clear venom in his voice.

From the woman's sleeve, a golden whip emerged, slithering like it was alive, and when the man turned away to leave, the whip tangled around his throat. From the shadows two men joined the woman. They were dressed in dark garb, and one of them had a hood. She could see the shimmering of black ink over their arms, strange symbols, similar to the one that she was painting for her final project.

One of the men favored the woman. His hair was a shaggy and dark, but his eyes were a darker blue, almost like a navy. He studied the man now with the fake blue eyes.

"You know what we are." The dark-haired man said simply.

The man growled, almost inhuman. "Nephilim." He spat.

"Good." The other man said now, his voice was lilted with an accent like her mother's. He drew a blade, a startling ice blue, and it shimmered slightly.

"Wait." The man said, eying the blade. "I have important information. Information that you need."

"I doubt that." The woman said, her voice was sounded bored, and you could tell that she just wanted to get this over with.

The man didn't glance away from the hooded man. "Valentine. I know here he is."

The dark-haired man snorted. "Valentine is dead. Demons, they'll say anything to avoid the blade."

"They think they're creative." The hooded man agreed, and then it was quick, the blade coming around and piercing the man in the chest.

Bella gasped, covering her face with her hands. Her gasp was audible enough for the three strangers to notice her. She tried to back away, but the golden whip of the woman caught her by her wrist.

"You." She said, pulling the whip and it drug Bella forward into the room.

Bella looked where the man was. He was gone now; a faint outline was left where the body had disappeared. "What…you…"She was so confused. She knew she had witnessed the man kill the other man.

"Who are you?" The woman asked.

"I…"

"She can see us." The dark-haired one said, clear confusion on his face, but his voice told her something else. He was angry.

"She's not a demon."

Bella frowned. "No, I'm not a demon. I'm human. You guys…you just killed a man."

"That wasn't a man." The hooded man said matter-of-factly.

Bella wanted to argue, but she was blind. The man was clearly not there anymore, which meant that the man wasn't a man. She knew that there was more to the human world than just humans. She dated Edward Masen, a vampire. A vampire that was a daywalker at that. She swallowed. "Okay, he wasn't a man. He was a demon."

"Do you know demons?"

"I…don't think so. I've never met one before..." She murmured, still confused.

The woman with the whip exchanged looks with the other two before looking back at her curiously. "You're not scared?"

"I…" Bella paused. What was she? She felt nervous being bond here, no escape, and that increased her heart rate, which could indicate fear, but it was still not fear that she felt, but curiosity still. "The markings on your arms. What are they?" She directed the question to the two men.

"Have you seen these markings before?" The hooded one asked, curiosity filling his voice.

Bella nodded. "One of them."

"Which one?" The dark-haired one asked, his voice was threaded with frustration, but he was trying to continue to keep his calm Bella realized.

Bella looked at the woman. "I'm not going to run away. I promise."

The woman looked at the dark-haired man and he nodded slightly. The whip went limp, and it slithered back to her.

"This one." She pointed to the hooded man's arm. The symbol that she was painting. It was also the symbol she saw on the sign outside.

"Interesting." The man murmured.

The dark-haired man looked at his watch. "We need to move."

"But she can see us we- "The other man started.

"Jace." The other man warned.

Bella looked between the two. "I'm not afraid of the supernatural. I know about certain things. I…know about vampires. You're not vampires though…" she murmured. "The demon…he called you Nephilim. So, you're half angel?"

The dark-haired man was glaring now. "You know a lot about the supernatural. How? You're clearly not a witch or warlock."

Bella blinked a few times. "First of all, stop acting rude. Second, Nephilim is written in Genesis, the Bible. You don't have to a witch or warlock to know any of that." She crossed her arms defensively.

Jace, the hooded one, smirked, pushing his hood off his head, revealing his brilliant blonde hair. It was slicked back perfectly, and his eyes were a brilliant golden color. Like liquid amber that swirled with golden flecks. It was mesmerizing to look at. "Yeah Alec, stop acting so rude."

The woman sighed. "So, she knows the bible. Come on, we have to go."

Bella's phone started ringing, and it startled her slightly. She pulled it from her pocket, her eyes not leaving Jace. "Hello?"

"Bella? Where'd you run off to?" Clary's voice was loud, and the music was even louder, so she was still inside the club.

"Sorry, bathroom line is long. I'll be back shortly." She said, and then hung up.

"She needs to come with us," Jace said to Alec, who was still brooding.

"What, no Jace. You know the rules." Alec said, glaring at his friend angrily.

Jace shook his head. "She knows more than just the bible. She recognizes the rune."

"I…paint and draw them sometimes." Bella said.

Jace looked back at Alec. "She's coming with us."

"No, no I am not. I have to get back to my sister, and friend." Bella said. Her phone rang, and this time it was her mom. "Mom I- "she answered but got cut off.

"Bella, where are you and Clary?" Jocelyn's voice was rushed, and there was a lot of movement in the background.

"Just at this new club, we stopped in to take a look at it. We're going to leave soon and- "

"No! Don't come home." Jocelyn's voice wavered, and Bella could hear some clashing in the background.

"Mom! What's going on?"

"I love you, Bella. Tell your sister I love her." Jocelyn's voice sounded sad, defeated.

Bella felt the fear roll up her spine as she heard the growling of something inhuman in the apartment. "Mom! I'm coming!"

"No! You can't! He's found me Bella; I wish I told you sooner. I should have told you sooner. Stay away. You must stay away! You and your sister! Valen- "Jocelyn cut off, a loud smacking sound sounded, and then Jocelyn's groan. The phone was away from her now. "Tell Valentine, he'll never find it!" She growled, and then there was a roar, and then silence.

"Mom! Mom!" She panicked, looking at her phone, the call abruptly ending. "Shit." She looked up, realizing that the three were staring at her now. "I've got to go." She said and then she was heading to the door that said EXIT above it. She pushed through it and took off running. She had to make it there. She had to save her mom. Whatever was happening, she had to save her. The club wasn't far from the apartment.

Her legs sprinted her towards the apartment. She didn't even take the time to stop and get Clary. Whatever it was, was dangerous and she wouldn't allow her younger sister to get hurt. She reached the apartment, rushing up the stairs, and the front door was kicked open and everything was spilled out everywhere, like a struggle happened.

"Mom!" Bella called out, frantically looking for her. She couldn't find her and saw blood smeared on the floor, she gasped, looking around. Suddenly she heard the low growl of an animal and she turned, seeing a demon-like creature with two heads, crouched on all fours. It rushed towards her, but Bella moved through the apartment, getting to her mom's room and slammed the door behind her. She grabbed the desk chair from her mom's desk and wedged it up under the knob and looked around the trashed room. She knew that her mom kept a gun in the closet, and so she rushed in, looking for the gun safe, but couldn't find it. "Shit…shit…shit." She cursed, and then she noticed a panel in the closet loose, and so she pulled at it, finding a space behind the wall. There were some weapons in there. They looked like what the trio at the club carried, but she didn't care. She grabbed one, the blade illuminating when she touched it and she turned just in time for the demon dog thing to bust through the door. She maneuvered around, a bit clumsy, but she was trying to fight for her life. She struck, slicing the demon, and the skin burned from the blade and she dodged out the door, rushing through to the living room. The demon chased her, and she whirled around with the blade, and she got lucky, as it stabbed into its face, and then it was dying, sizzling as goop fell from it.

Right then, Jace busted through the door, looking at Bella, who was out of breath from her sprint, but also fighting off a demon. She was holding a seraph blade, and it was reacting to her touch.

"You're a Shadowhunter." Jace murmured.

Bella had taken a defensive stance as someone busted through the door. She looked relieved when it was just Jace. She lowered her arms, the blade as well. "It's just you." She sucked in a deep breath, and then she ran a hand through her hair, that had fallen out of its ponytail now. "Where are your friends?"

"They left. I doubled back…I thought maybe you were in trouble, and…" he surveyed the room. "What…"

"My mom is missing. God, I left my sister at the club." She looked around the room, her body shook a little as the adrenaline started leaving her body. She started to buckle, but Jace was right there to catch her against him.

Jace was confused. How could she be a Shadowhunter, but not know it? Who was she? He eased her over to a chair and set her there. He surveyed the room. "Where did you get the seraph blade?" He asked her, looking at the blade in her hand still.

"My mom's closet. There are other weapons in there. I don't understand why she has this stuff." Bella murmured.

Jace took her hand, turning it over. "Here." He said, and then took a pen looking thing and tapped her hand. A mark appeared.

Bella frowned, looking at her hand. "What did you do?"

"It's not what I did. You were born in Idris. You were given that mark when you were born." Jace explained. "Your mother is a Shadowhunter. What is your name?"

"Bella Fray." She murmured.

"What is your mother's name?"

"Jocelyn Fray."

Jace frowned. He didn't know of any Fray's being a family in his world, but it was clear that Bella was a Shadowhunter. "You don't remember anything? Your mother never told you?"

"No," Bella shook her head. "She would tell me about something this important…. or…." She frowned, staring at her hand. "She said she was sorry she didn't tell me all of this before…she said that Valentine found her. She was talking to someone before I lost her. She said, Tell Valentine he'll never find it." She repeated the words she heard her mother say.

Jace frowned, thinking about what the demon earlier had mentioned. It wasn't possible for Valentine to be alive. "Are you sure that's what she said?"

Bella nodded. "Yes, I'm sure." She ran her hand through her hair, and then her phone was ringing again. She answered immediately. "Hello."

"Where are you?" Clary asked, the thump of the music could still be heard, but she was outside the club now, so she could hear.

Bella didn't know what to say. "Um. Something happened."

"What happened?" Clary asked, confused.

Bella looked at Jace, who was still looking through the house, trying to figure out what it was the demons were after, and why they took Jocelyn. "Mom has been kidnapped. Before you run home, don't. Go stay with Simon. I'm calling Luke."

"What!? Kidnapped? Bella, I can't just-"

"Clarissa." Bella said her name, her voice serious. "Stay with Simon. I mean it. I'll come to you in the morning. I can't have you here right now. It's going to be a crime scene anyways."

Clary was panicking. "Bella, what aren't you telling me? I can't just stay with Simon, when mom is missing."

"I'm calling Luke. Go with Simon to his apartment. Please listen to me for once. Please." Bella's voice sounded a little weary.

"Fine. Bella….please don't shut me out. I know you've been shutting me out because of Edward lately, but please. This is our mother." Clary's voice broke.

"I know. I know that I have. I'm sorry. Edward broke something in me, and I just…I don't want you to worry about me. Right now, I'm trying to hold it together, so I need you to be strong too. Okay? Luke will know what to do. He's police. Let him do his job, while we stay safe. Got it?"

"Yeah." Clary's voice was small over the phone, the tremble in her voice reminded Bella of the time that Clary got lost. The pitiful whine over the phone at the market. That same tremble was still in her voice.

Bella closed her eyes, pushing back tears that were threatening to spill over. "I love you."

"I love you too." Clary sniffed, and then she hung up.

Bella sighed, dialing Luke. It rang twice before he picked up. "Luke-"

"Where are you and your sister?" Luke's voice was immediate.

"Clary is with Simon. I'm at the apartment. Luke, mom has been taken. The apartment is a wreck, and-"

"Bella, this is important. I already know you are drawing runes. Your mother showed me your painting. I need you to get out of the apartment. I need you to go somewhere safe, do you understand me?"

"Why would she show you my painting."

"That's not important. Get out of the apartment now, go somewhere safe, and then I'll call you. Please. Listen to me Bella. I will call Clary and tell her the same." Luke sounded winded a little, like he was running somewhere.

Bella frowned. "Luke…."

"Bella, trust me. Can you trust me?"

"Yes, I can but- "

"I'll call you. Get somewhere safe. Now." He said and then he hung up.

Bella stared at her phone, a bit bewildered. "What the fuck is going on…" she muttered and ran her hand through her hair again. She did that when she was thinking or nervous.

"Come on." Jace said, walking back into the living room. "Let's get you to the Institute. Hodge might know more about what is happening."

"The Institute?"

"A haven, for Shadowhunters. I promise it'll make sense when we explain it. Right now, we need to move." Jace said.

Bella nodded, standing, surprised that her legs could hold her. She followed Jace, heading out into the streets, and then followed him until her legs finally started to give.

Jace caught her, his arm around her waist. "Let's take a cab." He murmured, and they hailed one.

"Wait, how is it they see you?" She murmured once inside the cab.

Jace smiled. "I'll show you later." He gave the cabby an address, and the cab moved forward.

Before long, they were in front of an old building in Brooklyn. It looked like an abandoned church. The colonial structure was older though. It wasn't a run-down church, though. Bella could see the glimmer of the ward that surrounded the building. She saw the outward appearance shift, changing before her eyes. It was astonishing to witness. The structure was still very much old, but it was in pristine condition. The massive doors on the front were wooden, a dark oak, with iron straps going across the front.

Jace opened one of the large doors, and she followed him inside. Everything was just so massive. Bella looked around at all the intricate design of the wood, the railings, the floor. She was in awe. She still had a grip on the seraph blade as she followed Jace.

Alec appeared then and looked at Jace angrily. "What is she doing here? You know the- "

"She's a Shadowhunter Alec, look." He said and gestured to Bella's hand holding the blade.

Alec looked at Bella, holding the blade and he studied her. "How are you a Shadowhunter?"

"I guess my mother was one." Bella murmured. "Look, I'm sorry if this upsets you, but demons took my mother tonight, and I have to get her back."

"Valentine." Jace said. "The demon wasn't lying. Valentine is still alive."

"That's impossible." Alec said, taking on a look of confusion.

"Well, it's not," Bella said, and felt a wave of exhaustion roll over her again.

Jace grabbed her arm, steadying her. "Right now, we need to see Hodge. Perhaps he has some information for us."

"He's in the library." Alec said, and then looked at Bella. "I don't understand how you're a Shadowhunter. Why would you be hiding in a world full of Mundanes."

"I don't know." Bella said, and with that she followed Jace, walking through the Institute to a massive library. There were artifacts in cases, and there were shelves lined with books on an upstairs level, and on the bottom floor that they were on. Bella looked around, still in shock of everything. The details in the woodwork were astonishingly beautiful, and she would have loved to paint a room like this.

"Jace, you've brought a visitor." A voice sounded. A man, maybe forty, with bristly blonde hair and fair blue eyes walked down the massive staircase. He was wearing a black tank top, and regular pants, black as well, and he looked as if he had been working out. His runes gleamed against his skin.

Jace nodded. "Bella Fray." He introduced, and then looked at Bella. "This is Hodge Starkweather."

Hodge smiled at Bella as he came to a stop before them. He was shorter than Jace, and barely taller than she was. "Ah, so you're a Shadowhunter."

"Apparently." Bella said.

"It's not a common thing, for Shadowhunters to be hidden in the Mundane world without the Clave's knowledge." Hodge explained. "Who is your mother?"

"Jocelyn Fray." Bella said simply.

Hodge frowned. "Jocelyn Fray?"

Bella looked at Jace and then at Hodge, a confused look on her face. "Yes."

"That's too similar to Jocelyn Fairchild." Hodge said then.

Jace looked at Hodge, and then it was like a light went off in Jace's head. "You're right."

"What?" Bella asked, not understanding what was being said.

"Do you have a photo of your mother?" Jace asked.

Bella nodded, taking her phone from her pocket, and opening her gallery. She took picked the picture that had her, Clary, Jocelyn, Luke, and Simon at the dinner table at one of the restaurants there in Brooklyn. It was Clary's eighteenth birthday. She handed it to Jace.

Jace studied it. "I never met Jocelyn Fairchild." He said and handed Bella's phone to Hodge.

Hodge took the phone and looked at it. His face paled slightly, his mouth dropping open just a bit. "It's her…" he murmured. "She was alive this whole time. I thought she died with Valentine and her three children in the war." He said. "The other two, are they your brother and sister?"

"Uh, no. Clary, the red head is my sister. Simon is Clary's best friend." Bella explained. "I don't have a brother."

Hodge shook his head. "But you do." He sighed. "Perhaps he didn't make it out of fire. Now that I'm thinking. Jocelyn was pregnant with your sister then."

Bella felt her head start to pound. She put her palm to her forehead, pressing against the throbbing pain. "I don't understand. Why would my mother keep any of this from me, and why don't I remember a fire? All my memories are of Brooklyn, of New York. I don't-"she cut herself off. Her mother spoke with another accent, one like Jace's. She looked at Jace. "Your accent, you're not English."

"No, but Idris is between is Germany and France, around Switzerland. The wards protect our country from Mundanes ever realizing it's there. If they wander close to the border, they are merely transported to the other side." Jace explained.

Bella wondered if that explained her mother's accent. One that neither her nor Clary inherited. She was Twenty-one, about to be Twenty-two soon, while Clary just turned eighteen a few months prior. Was she really even that young or old? She would have been three, when they moved from Idris if that was the case.

"I can see you're thinking about something." Hodge said, breaking Bella's thoughts. "Perhaps, there is something blocking your mind to prevent you from remembering fully, what it was you were supposed to remember."

"You might be right…" she murmured. "How old was I when the fire happened? Do you remember?"

Hodge thought about it. "Let's see, your brother Jonathan was seven, and you were five if I remember correctly."

"Jonathan? That was his name?" Bella frowned. "My father's name was Jonathan."

Jace looked confused. "No, Fairchild, she was married to Valentine Morgenstern." He relayed. His name was Jonathan too, but a lot of Shadowhunters he knew had that name. Jonathan was the first Shadowhunter, so it was a common name amongst their kind.

Bella shook her head. "It wouldn't be the most surprising thing today." She sighed. "So, the photo of my father is fake, everything I know about him is fake. My mother had a box, with J.C. carved on the top. She always treasured that box. I assumed it was because of my father, but I suppose it was for my brother." She murmured. "I'm not 21 then."

"Is that how old your mother has told you?" Hodge asked.

"Yes. Clary is eighteen. She just turned eighteen." Bella said. "That makes me 23. Its not important, I don't care. I just care about getting my mom back. I don't know why she just didn't tell me all of this."

Jace nodded. "We'll find her."

"For now, go get her a room Jace, she's exhausted. Rest up, and we'll talk more in the morning." Hodge said, offering a kind smile.

Jace nodded, placing a hand on Bella's shoulder, making her look up at him. "Come on." He said gently. And he guided her out of the library, and to a massive hall with many rooms. "I know there is a lot happening here, and I wish I could give you all the answers that you seek, but I don't. I'm really sorry that all of this is happening."

Bella nodded. "It's okay. It's not your fault. I just wish that she trusted to tell me all of this. I'm not…. I'm not that fragile. I don't think I am." She ran a hand through her hair. "I hope Clary is okay, and Simon." She blew out a breath.

"We'll have to bring Clary here, she's also a Shadowhunter, and the longer she stays out there, the more danger she is in." Jace explained as they came to a stop in front of a door. The door was wooden and looked heavy from the looks of it.

Bella knew that he was right, but part of her wanted to protect her younger sister from all of this. Then it made sense to her. Her mother wanted to protect them, so she kept all of this from them. But Bella was an adult, she could handle the added pressures of life, or so she liked to think. "Thank you." She said. "You didn't have to come to my apartment, to help me or anything. Alec, your friend, he didn't seem to like me very much, and you risked that to come to me."

"You're interesting. I found you interesting from the moment you could see us."

"Well, you weren't hiding very well."

"We had cloaking runes on. If you were a mundane, you wouldn't have been able to see us. The only possibility was either you were a downworlder or a Shadowhunter." He explained.

Bella nodded. She supposed it made sense. There was so much of this world that she just didn't understand. "Is this my room?" She gestured to the large door.

"Yes. Get some rest Bella." Jace said with a small smile and then left her there.

Bella pushed open the door and went inside. She was so tired. She went to the massive bed, not caring about what the rest of the room looked like, and just collapsed down onto it. She closed her eyes, and sleep took her quickly.
