Chapter One
"I was just, I'm in love with you," Sophie was laying on her king-sized bed facing the gorgeous view through the sliding glass door of the shimmering teal Pacific Ocean and the party in her yard that was at full swing, watching the Casino Night episode of The Office for the hundred thousandth time and licking the last bit of chocolate caramel off her thumb. She could faintly hear the loud laughter and pumping bass coming from the speakers by the pool at her fiancé Fitz's party. He had been pissed when she decided she was not coming earlier, but her period cramps were so awful she could barely stand up straight. So, she had been hiding from him holed up in their bedroom binging tv and eating chocolate from the secret stash in a shoebox under the bed ever since.
As the credits rolled for the end of the episode, Fitz's sister and Sophies friend, Biana knocked lightly on the glass, "Hey, can I come in?"
Sophie nodded and Biana slid the door open just wide enough to scoot through sideways then closed it gently behind her.
Biana was pretty normally, but she looked extra beautiful tonight with her hair freshly highlighted and curled, and an adorable white cropped blouse that probably cost her hundreds of dollars.
Biana set her cup down on the bed side table and flopped down next to Sophie, "What are we watching? That music Fitz is playing is giving me a migraine."
It was true, Fitz had a horrible taste in music. It was sometimes adorable and sometimes irritating. Right now, it was slightly irritating
"I was watching The Office but now I'm hanging out with you," Sophie set her phone down on the blanket between them, and tried to sit up straighter, then winced.
"Aww Sophie, do you just get really bad cramps?"
Sophie nodded.
"Maybe you should let Fitz get you pregnant, so you won't have period cramps for nine months." Biana joked.
Sophie giggled, "But seriously I don't know if I want kids. I know I don't want kids now though, I'm only 23."
"What do you mean you don't know if you want kids, you have to have kids, someone has to take over the talent agency when Fitz wants to retire."
Fitz's father Alden ran A. D. Vacker Global Talent Agency, which was a huge acting agency with headquarters in Los Angeles. It was one of the biggest and the most successful in the country, if not the world. It had locations in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Paris, London, Vienna, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, and New York. It was insane. Alden traveled A LOT. When Fitz took over the company in a few years, he was going to have to travel a lot too. Sophie was really going to miss him.
"Maybe he should get a side piece then," Sophie said, only partly joking.
Biana laughed but it sounded slightly forced.
An uncomfortable silence followed, and Sophie stared out at the glimmering Hawaiian Pacific Ocean awkwardly.
Biana stood up and pat the bed, smoothing the blanket where she had been laying, she cleared her throat, "Er, anyway, Fitz asked me to get you to come to the party for a while. Please," She added when Sophie didn't move. "He really wanted to hang out with you, and he said that if you were still mad, I should tell you that he got you a present."
Sophie got up knowing that he would just send someone else in next and just keep sending people in until she agreed to come out. And okay she was a human being and the thought of a present intrigued her… a lot.
Biana walked into Sophies closet and searched around for a few minutes occasionally mumbling under her breath while Sophie took a super quick shower. She came out holding an adorable flowy blush colored maxi dress that she had given Sophie for Christmas. "I have this exact same dress in lilac, and it is literally so comfortable you won't even remember your not in your cozy tank set anymore, she gestured to Sophies black tank top and matching shorts.
Sophie went back into the bathroom to change into a… surprisingly comfortable dress. She stood on her tiptoes to see as much of herself as possible in the over the sink mirror and smoothed her hair. The dress had a sweetheart neckline and went off the shoulders. Sophie tied the tie in the back then turned to make sure it was a nice bow. Nope, it was obviously wonky. She tried again. It still didn't work, Biana would have to help her. She sprayed a tiny bit of her favorite perfume on her wrists, cause why not go all out. At the last second she put on a delicate layered gold necklace. She looked in the mirror again, sighed and walked out of the bathroom.
"Yay you look so pretty, I'm obviously an amazing personal stylist," Biana exclaimed clapping her hands together as Sophie walked over to her. She tied the tie on the back of the dress that Sophie had failed miserably at and tucked a piece of Sophies hair behind her ear, "Should we do your hair? No we don't have time, its fine, plus you look totally perfect, that its seriously not fair" She smiled, "Let's go get 'em." Then Biana checked herself out in the sliding glass door smoothed her clothes and walked through it towards the party.
After a few steps she paused and saw that Sophie was still standing nervously by the end of the bed uncomfortably hunched over slightly. "Let's go there's this super-hot guy and he's swimming in the pool. For me though, not you. But you'll definitely feel a little better just looking at him. I don't condone you cheating on my brother, especially with a guy I saw first. So don't get any ideas. You can give me an entrance to him as the hostess of this crazy party, c'mon, let's go." Then she turned on her heel, confident that Sophie would follow her out and trotted in her Jimmy Choo stiletto sandals towards the pool.
Sophie sighed, wanting to curl back up on her bed and watch Gay Witch Hunt, but she had seen that while Biana's tone was joking her eyes were serious, she really did like this guy. Sophie walked over to the bed side table and picked up her engagement ring. It was an eight-carat princess cut diamond ring. It was beautiful, although Sophies dream ring would be less blingy and probably round. She slid it on her ring finger. Then she rolled her neck, squared her shoulders, and walked out into the yard, towards the party, specifically the pool, sliding the door closed behind her.
