Hey guys! Who else has AP exams this week? Who else is on here instead of studying for them? This is just a little one-shot (possibly two-shot) that has been circulating in my mind for a while. I don't know why, but it's 4 AM and I'm deciding to finally write this so just bare with me.
It was midday and the sun was high in the sky, the heat beating down on the two figures far below. The clang of bronze against bronze, sword against dagger, could be heard to those passing by the training arena. Yelling mixed with laughter and witty retorts. In other words, it was a normal day at camp half blood.
"Fine, fine! I yield!" Annabeth said, raising her hands in defeat.
"Come on, that was way to easy. You never yield. Are you feeling okay wise girl?" It may have been easier than usual, but sweat still dripped from Percy's face. Annabeth did not go down without a fight.
"Yeah yeah, I'm fine. Just tired is all. Don't get used to winning."
He extended his hand and helped pull her up. They started walking towards the cabins hand in hand. As they walked, Annabeth's feet seemed to be moving slower and slower. Her movements were clumsy and sluggish. Percy pretended not to notice, but he knew something was wrong.
"Hey, are you sure you're okay? You don't look so good."
"I'm touched that you're worried about me seaweed brain, but really it's nothing."
"Let's just stop by the infirmary real quick. Let Will or someone look at you. You look like you're about to-"
Before the words could leave his lips, Annabeth's eyes rolled back in her head and her knees buckled. Percy just barely caught her limp body before it hit the ground. Her skin felt like a hot iron against his bare arms.
"Annabeth! Come on wise girl, wake up!"
She didn't even groan in response. Carrying her bridal style, Percy ran to the infirmary, being careful not to jostle her around too much.
"Will! Will! I need help! It's Annabeth! We were just walking and she passed out and she's burning up and-"
"Percy! Calm down! I'm sure she'll be fine. Bring her over here."
He gently laid her on an empty cot while will rushed over to grab some supplies. He sat down in a chair beside her, fidgeting worriedly, but not once did his hand let go of Annabeth's.
"Okay. Now explain to me what happened. Slowly," Will said, coming back over.
"She's been kind of off all day and then I knew something was wrong when we were practicing in the arena, but she's so stubborn. Whenever I asked what was wrong, she would just shrug it off and say it was nothing. Then we were walking back to the cabins and I was trying to convince her to come here and then she just collapsed. I don't know what happened. What's wrong with her Will?"
Percy had his head in his hands, and he looked like he was about to have an emotional breakdown. At least when she got hurt, he knew what was wrong, he could at least do something. But now he didn't know what was wrong, and Annabeth was unconscious, and what was happening?
"Percy, relax. She'll be fine. It's just the flu."
"What? But I thought demigods couldn't get sick?"
"It's hard to, but not impossible. Her immune system was probably trying to fight the virus, and the physical activity just zapped the rest of her energy."
"So she'll be ok?"
"I told you, she'll be fine. There's not much I can do though. Why don't you take her back to your cabin? It's probably quieter there. Make sure she gets plenty of rest, lots of fluids, try giving her some nectar when she wakes up."
"So she'll be ok?"
"Yes! Now go!"
They got to Percy's cabin, Annabeth still unconscious. Tucking her into an empty bunk, Percy sat nervously on the edge of the bed. What now?
Annabeth woke up two hours later to see Percy pacing nervously around the cabin. But the moment he saw that she was awake, he was by her side again.
"Thank Zeus you're awake! Do you need anything? Water? Food? More blankets? More pillows? Are you comfortable?"
"Relax seaweed brain. I'm fine." She tried to get out of the bed, but Percy pushed her back down.
"Nope, doctor's orders. Plenty of rest."
She sighed knowing that when it came to her health, he was even more stubborn than she was. Suddenly a thought formed in her head.
"Fine. But if I'm going to be confined to this bed all day, you have to do something for me. There's a book beside my bed, can you go grab it?"
"Be right back."
A minute later, Percy came back holding a Greek copy of "Circe".
"Please don't tell me it's this one."
"That's the one," she said, smiling to herself.
He handed it to her, muttering something about guinea pigs.
"No, I want you to read it to me."
"What?"
"Read it to me. Please? I like your voice."
He looked like he was about to protest, but then thought better of it. Laying down on the bed next to her, he opened to the first page and started reading. Although he was trying to hide it, Percy secretly enjoyed reading to Annabeth.
As he read, she laid her head on his chest and closed her eyes, listening to his heartbeat and the sound of his voice. Slowly she drifted off to sleep again.
Closing the book softly, he kissed her still burning forehead. "Goodnight wise girl," he murmured, a soft smile on his lips as he joined her in the realm of Morpheus.
