It was over.
Redstripe- no, Redstar, looked at the crumpled body of his mate with wistful eyes. He felt a tornado of emotions hit him as he took a step backwards. Anger, sadness, rage and fear. That's all he felt.
Redkit opened his brown eyes, looking around him. His weary body hurt everywhere. He noticed that he was in a heap at the bottom of a slope. Now he remembered. Whoops.
Maybe he shouldn't have listened to Seakit and snook out.
Maybe he shouldn't have shouted at her like that.
Maybe he shouldn't have looked up at a squirrel at the wrong moment.
Then Redkit wouldn't have fallen. He would have been safe, in his mother's warm embrace. But no, Redkit had to disobey, leaving him stranded in the middle of nowhere, with no skills and no moral compass. He gulped. The trees towered over him, making him cower. The bushes whispered, mocking the young cat.
It seemed,
It was all.. over.
Redstr- no, Redstar, remembered that hollow feeling inside, like someone had carved out his heart and filled it with black emptiness. He held out his paw, half-expecting her to jump up and shake it, full of life. She was gone, and she wasn't coming back. This was a pointless exercise. Those days were behind them.
Redkit covered his paws with his eyes, trembling in fear. His nose picked up a scent, bu he was too young to know what it was. Surrounded in unfamiliar territory, the brown Tom's world began to enlarge in size. Taking a paw step, he began to walk. It was as if every sound he made transformed the trees into monsters, the roots into hurdles and the sky a deeper shade of dull, lifeless grey. That's how he felt. That's how he would always fe- Wait. What was that? He heard a tumble and saw a she-cat land in front of him. She seemed to have a glow around her. Maybe it was the woods, making her seem like the only beacon of light. Maybe it was the fact that she was so.. pretty.
"Umm.." Redkit started to speak, but he somehow forgot how to use his mouth. The heap got up and stretched.
"Hey, Redkit, I don't think we've been properly introduced before," She smiled, holding out her paw.
"Hey.. I wanna say Frostpaw-," He smiled shakily, touching his paw against hers.
"And you would be right. Why are you here? I'm on a patrol to look for you,"
"Seakit,"
"Ahh. C'mon, let's get you home! At least there you won't freeze to death!"
"How do you always manage to find the silver lining?"
Chuckling, Frostpaw replied, "It's easy, all you gotta do is smile!"
Redstripe- no, Redstar got up, as he once did when he was but a kit, but she did not. Froststar had lived her life well. He was going back to camp to tell everyone.
"You ok?" The voice of a ginger Warrior walked up to him.
"Hey.. Pouncefrost," He was tired, ok?!
".."
"Sorry," He mumbled, walking off.
"Hey! Come back, I know she's gone, but we aren't!" Pouncefur walked up to him.
"I know.." He sighed and turned to face her, looking into her deep eyes.
"C'mon, let's get you back to camp, you can warm up there!"
"How do you always manage to find the bright side?"
"All you gotta do is smile!"
Redstar broke down. All of his past memories came flooding back to him, making him think and feel what he felt that night, when he and Frostpaw met. Pouncefur had reminded him of.. Her.
It was over.
