Author's Note: Hello, all! I wrote this cutsey one-shot based on my fic, Charms of Sweetness, a long time ago but just realized that I never published it here ^^; It's a cute lil GotenxMisa fic with takes place between the last two chapters of Cos (which haven't been published yet but that's the plan hehe)
May contain spoilers for CoS but if you don't care about that, enjoy!
Surprise
Misa blinked a few times. Once. Twice. Still the same. Her breath caught in her chest and remained there in suspended animation. She had to remind herself to keep breathing after a few seconds.
"It can't be…" she whispered in disbelief. Maybe she'd done it wrong. Maybe it needed more time. But no. There it was staring back at her and it wasn't changing.
Misa stepped out of the bathroom and into the living room of her large yet cozy top floor apartment. She stood there in silence, almost like a robot, with no expression. Her mind was racing so much it almost blanked out.
'I've been careful…' she thought. 'I've been taking care of myself…how could this happen?'
She was almost startled out of her skin at the sound of a knock on the door.
"…who is it?" she called out, finding it difficult to even raise her voice, let alone talk at all. She was much too shaken up at the moment.
"It's me," the warm and familiar yet somewhat muffled voice said from the other side of the door. She could swear his voice echoed in the apartment somehow, but it must've just been her own worries.
Misa swallowed at the lump in her throat and opened the door. She put on a smile at seeing his face. "Hey. It's nice of you to drop by, Goten."
"You know I can't go too long without seeing you, babe," he said sweetly as he grabbed her by the sides of her head and softly pressed his lips against hers.
Misa couldn't help but smile at his tenderness, as always. Even now with her mind full of nervousness and worries, he still managed to make her smile.
"Come in," she invited him. He stepped inside and she shut the door. "…I was just thinking about you…"
Goten chuckled confidently. "That's good to know. That's very good to know." He walked over to the large comfy couch and took a seat. He looked up at her and noticed the look on her face. Misa hadn't even realized her worried expression had returned. "Hey…what's wrong?"
Misa shook her head. "…I have something I need to tell you…"
For whatever reason he couldn't explain, Goten was feeling slightly on edge as he stood up from his seat on the couch. "…is everything okay?"
Misa nodded her head, but suddenly it felt as she was standing on air. Her knees knocked together and she felt herself going down. The next thing she felt were strong arms and the warmth of Goten's body as he grabbed on to her.
"I think you need some rest," Goten said with a nervous chuckle. "You've been working like crazy lately. Some rest will do you good."
…
Goten carried Misa into her bedroom and softly placed her on the bed. He hurried off into the kitchen to fill a bowl with warm water and returned to pat the soaked cloth on her clammy forehead. "You look a little pale. Is everything all right?"
Misa felt slightly better. At least now she was in bed where she wouldn't run the risk of fainting, as she had felt since she'd made the discovery in her bathroom. She felt terrible at having made Goten worry and now spend the day taking care of her.
"…Goten…"
"Yes?" he replied softly. "Do you need anything? Maybe I should go get you some medicine…" Goten attempted to stand up but only to feel Misa's hand weakly grasp onto his sleeve as tightly as she could. He looked down at her again. "…what is it? I'm getting a little worried."
"I'm sorry to worry you," she said slowly. "…but things between us are going to change now…forever…"
Goten's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "…what do you mean?"
Misa's cheeks burned brightly and Goten felt himself falling further into his confusion.
"…Goten," she said, hesitating a moment before speaking so loudly it echoed. "We're gonna be parents!"
The apartment filled with silence. An awkward and heavy silence. Misa bit her bottom lip and held her breath, preparing for the worst.
"…p-parents?" Goten repeated, sounding as if the wind had been knocked out of him. Now he was starting to feel faint as well. "I'm gonna…I'm gonna be a father…you mean, you're pregnant?"
Misa nodded slowly and lowered her gaze to her hands on her lap. "…yeah…I took a test this morning and it came out positive…"
An awkward silence once again filled the room before Goten's laughter tore through it. Misa looked up at him with a look of complete surprise.
"It's hard to believe!" Goten said through hiccups. "I can't believe it…I thought you were taking care of that…"
"I was!" Misa said quickly. "Looks like it fell through, though…" Her face fell.
"Obviously…" Goten wiped the tears from his eyes. "Hey, hey…don't look like that. You should be happy."
Misa looked up at him. "Are you happy?"
"Of course I am!" he said and grabbed on to her hand. "I know you're probably a little scared, but it'll be okay."
"Aren't you afraid, too?"
"…well yeah, a little I guess," he replied but reassured her with a smile. It seemed he couldn't stop smiling even if he tried. "But we're together, right? We're not alone. I'm going to be with you every step of the way."
Misa felt as if a huge weight had suddenly been lifted off her shoulders. Her lungs began breathing on their own again as normal. Finally, a smile began tugging at her lips and laughed out loud, too. "This was such a big surprise…and really unexpected," she said. "I was so worried about what you would think…but I'm happier than anything!"
"That's the spirit!" Goten cheered and kissed her lips. His grin suddenly soured when he realized something. "…uh-oh…"
Misa stared at him, her expression falling as well. "…'uh-oh' what?"
Goten chuckled nervously. "…this is going to be a hard one to explain to Mom…" Misa gave him a confused look and he grinned. "You know my mom…she's quite into the traditional stuff. You know…married first, then baby. That kind of thing…"
"Oh," Misa responded. "I understand. My parents are the same way. But this wasn't planned at all…"
"Well yeah, but I don't think she's gonna have an easy time seeing that." Goten sighed when he saw Misa's frown returning. "Oh! I have an idea!"
"Yeah?"
He leaned in closer to her. "Let's get married…"
Misa almost choked on her own spit. She coughed a few times and covered her mouth in shock. "…marriage?"
"Yes!" Goten said happily. "I was waiting for the right to ask you, but I don't think I can wait anymore."
Misa stared at him and her expression soured more until she was bawling uncontrollably into her palms.
"…Misa?!" Goten cried and tried to comfort her. "Is there something wrong? You don't want to marry me?"
Misa shook her head and looked up at him. "No, that's not it. I'm…just so happy…must be these damn hormones that have got me like this…"
Goten bit his lip. He was certain her mood swings were going to be at least tripled or quadrupled now. He chuckled nervously at the thought.
"…so is that a yes?"
"Of course it is!" Misa exclaimed and looked up at him. "We should do it quickly though, before I can't fit into any wedding dresses!"
"How quickly?"
"…is a month reasonable?" she hesitated before asking.
Goten sweatdropped at the thought. He didn't know much about weddings, but after having taken part in a wedding himself, he knew it wasn't as easy as it looked. "I know! We'll ask Charisma and Trunks for help. They got married a few months ago, after all. I'm sure they can give us some tips."
Misa nodded her head excitedly. "Oh, I can't wait! I'm so happy!" Misa grabbed onto Goten and pulled his face down to hers. Their eyes met and she smiled lovingly. "I love you."
"I love you, too," Goten responded warmly, going in for a kiss. Before they could make contact, though, Misa suddenly pulled away and almost sent him flying across the room. She jumped off of the bed and ran straight for the bathroom, slamming the door behind her.
Goten's body broke into a cold sweat. "Morning sickness, huh? Oh, this is going to be fun…"
