Hey babes! Got a new alternate scene story for ya! This one is for 5x10/5x11 and I'm very pleased with how quickly I wrote this one. Only took me a couple of days to put it together. But I love it, and I hope you guys do too.
Enjoy!
Staring down at the engagement ring held gingerly in between his fingers, the moonlight glinting off the diamond, Mac's mind wanders. It wanders to places that it probably shouldn't, to a person that he's tried so hard not to let his mind wander to over the years, especially recently. He'd be lying if he said the events from Mexico City haven't made him rethink the way his life has been going. But having his best friend's biggest secret reluctantly spilled by a psychopath while trapped on a crumbling roof will do that.
Letting out a heavy breath as he stands, Mac tosses the ring aside, not caring too much about where it lands. He grabs his jacket off the bench and quickly makes his way through the house and then out the front door. He bypasses his truck completely, knowing he won't be able to focus well enough to be able to drive all the way there. So he walks.
But his destination isn't far. It's far enough, though, that it allows him more time to think, gives him more chances to turn around and go home, to forget about all of this. But he can't forget. So he keeps walking. There is too much rolling around in his head, most of it involving one person in particular, and he can't let it go until he knows. His mind will be able to settle once he knows the truth, if she'll grant him that.
Grateful for the apartment building's outside doors never being locked and not needing permission from someone who lives there to enter, Mac pulls the door open and steps inside. It's a short walk down the hallway and then he's finally reaching his destination.
Stopping in front of Riley's apartment door, Mac takes a deep breath. He lifts his fist and hesitates only for a moment, debating internally if he should be doing this; it's his last chance to change his mind. But he can't. He needs to see this through. He knows that whatever he says or does next will drastically change their friendship. Though, to be fair, things already changed after what happened in Mexico. He never, in his wildest dreams, imagined that Riley would ever have feelings for him. It was something he'd started to come to terms with as time went on.
And now he knows. Well, he knows that the feelings were there at one point in time. But he needs to know if they're still there. He needs to know if there's even a chance anymore, or if he needs to genuinely move on.
Finally knocking on the door in front of him, Mac rocks back on his heels as he waits. He doesn't have to wait long, though, the door opening a second later and revealing Riley standing on the other side.
He can't help it when his eyes track down her body and then back up, taking her in. He's always known she was beautiful, even when he first saw her in a supermax wearing that awful orange jumpsuit that would look terrible on anyone else. But now, even though they're just standing in the doorway of her apartment and there's nothing particularly special about the location or the moment, her beauty is magnified tenfold. And it nearly takes his breath away.
"Mac," she speaks up, pulling his full attention to her, "everything okay?"
He shifts a little on his feet. "I can't pretend the last twenty-four hours didn't just happen. They did. So, I gotta ask. Did it work?"
Her eyebrows furrow tightly as she looks at him. "Did what work?"
Mac lets out a breath, the tiniest hint of some kind of smile momentarily breaking past the barrier he's been trying to keep in place since he arrived. "Hiding your emotions and letting them pass. Did it work?"
She shifts on her feet and takes a deep breath, her head tilting slightly. "Mac…"
"Riley, please," he says. "I need to know. Please," he repeats softly, taking a small step forward but being careful not to cross the threshold of her apartment just yet.
She lets out a breath and shakes her head. "It doesn't matter what I feel, Mac. You're with Desi, and I—"
"Forget about Desi," he says, probably quicker and more insistent than he intended.
Riley's brows furrow. "What?"
"Forget about Desi," he repeats. "Your feelings matter too, Riley. So forget about our job, the team, everything. Just forget it all. Right now it's just you and me. And I'm standing in front of you asking if your feelings for me went away."
Riley stares at him for what feels like an eternity, her eyes searching his face for something. She must find whatever it is she's looking for, because then she lets out a shaky breath, her eyes drifting down to the floor. Then she looks back up at him. "No. They didn't."
Mac lets out a breath, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "I was hoping you'd say that." He finally steps across the threshold of Riley's apartment and stands right in front of her; she hasn't moved back which he takes as a good sign. He gently cups her cheeks in his hands, his heart racing inside his chest in anticipation as he searches her face. He sees it, a small flick of her eyes down to his lips, and then he's closing the distance between them.
The second their lips connect it's like he's finally awake and seeing clearly for the first time in a very long time. And he can't believe how he let himself go this long without knowing what it's like to kiss Riley. Because it's an incredible feeling. Everything finally makes sense.
Reluctantly breaking the kiss, he rests his forehead against hers and smiles. "I have been wanting to do that...for so long."
"You have?" Riley asks, her voice barely above a whisper.
He nods. "Yeah."
Riley swallows. "What...what about you and Desi?"
"We broke up. Well, she broke up with me, said that we both need time to think about things. And then she told me to do what I felt was right. So I'm here, finally kissing you, because I have had feelings for you for so long but I never thought you would feel the same way."
Riley's breath catches. "You what?"
He laughs quietly, pulling back so he can look her in the eyes, smiling softly as his thumbs rub gently against the skin of her cheeks. "I have feelings for you too, Riley. I always have."
Riley smiles brightly and then surges up on her toes to press her lips against his, kissing him deeply as her hands grip tightly to the front of his jacket, pulling him closer.
Mac's heart soars at the realization of what's happening and he kisses her back with just as much desire. He's had these pent-up feelings buried inside him for so long and now they're finally out in the open. He no longer has to hide them and pretend that he only sees Riley as just a friend.
Walking them into the apartment, he kicks the door closed and then spins them around to press Riley's back against it, kissing her deeper. His hands drop from her face to grip her hips and gently squeeze. The motion elicits a moan from Riley that makes him kiss her harder, using his entire body to hold hers against the door, the tips of his fingers sliding underneath the hem of her shirt.
Pulling away just enough from her lips, Mac begins leaving a slow trail of kisses along Riley's jawline and then down the column of her neck. He smiles against her skin when she gasps quietly, one of her hands finding its way into his hair. He groans when she tugs, which only makes her pull a little harder. He never knew it would be so easy to get lost in Riley, the familiar scent of coconut and the way her skin feels under his fingers completely flooding his senses. It's incredible. And he doesn't want it to stop.
Two sharp trills force him out of his Riley-induced haze and he groans in frustration, dropping his forehead to rest on Riley's shoulder. "Maybe if we just ignore it…" he says, trailing off as he turns his head to press a feather-light kiss to her neck.
Riley laughs quietly, her fingers gently massaging his scalp. "I don't think that'll go over too well." She shifts against the door and then sighs. "It's Matty."
Mac sighs heavily, standing up straight and taking a small step back, though his hands remain on her hips. "Guess that's as good a way as any to kill the mood."
She smiles, her hand moving out of his hair to gently cup his cheek. "We'll get back to this soon, I promise. But I think we need to talk a little more first, which we can do after whatever Matty needs us for. Sound good?"
He smiles back, leaning into her touch and taking one more moment to appreciate how amazing it is to be standing with her like this. He turns his head just enough to press a kiss to the inside of her wrist. "Sounds perfect."
