This is the offering to Kadam Week 2017 prompt 5: Kurt and Adam either meet or reunite while participating in a volunteer event
What Kurt never suspected once his dad had been elected as Congressman, was the kind of doors it would open, especially given Burt's open support of the Arts...
To be more precise it was the fact that after receiving Nyada's rejection letter, their household received a phone call offering Kurt a place within the school claiming it an administrative misshape.
Of course in exchange for a bill that would put more support toward the school and a donation.
Burt had been wholly unimpressed but asked for time instead of downright refusing as his instincts were telling him, then proceeded to talk with Kurt about it
There had been many moments in his life when Burt had been extremely proud of his son and that one, was one of them.
Kurt had been just as appalled and disheartened, instead of capitulating for the blackmailing, as that would have left Kurt wondering if he could really do it for years, he placed late applications to any other school in New York, and around the country.
Despite the late submissions he still managed to win a full ride at Parson, thanks to all his projects for glee and his found raising abilities for that year's play.
It was not a turn he had expected, not so long after changing his dreams' trajectory, but he would have been foolish to renounce a full ride anywhere, least of all New York.
He reasoned with himself that he could always do the first year, see if he got engaged or if his heart was still more geared toward the theatre and then decide.
In the end it didn't matter as much, not compared to have a proper ticket out of Lima for the foreseeable future...
New York City had been all Kurt dreamed of and more, so many opportunities, so much beauty, but also so many wake up calls that made Kurt feel just how, despite everything he had been gone through, he still had a lot to be thankful for.
Around thanksgiving time a new sign in poster had appeared on the bulletin board in his dorm hall. It was a request for volunteers for a nearby High school setting up their winter theatre production.
While costume designers and tailors were very much needed, any kind of help was going to be welcome and appreciated.
Offering proof of participation could be converted from two to six credit of independent study, depending on the suitability of the role in relation to the student's career.
Indeed discovery that there were school in bright beautiful New York who offered even less than Lima in the art department came as a shock to Kurt.
There had been times when he wished he had grown up somewhere else, and yet the longer he was discovering those tiny details, the little less mythical even New York City became.
It was just more of the same, only on a different bigger scale.
And those kids he was going to work with had just the same limited choice as Kurt himself had.
It was why even as a freshman, with really not much to offer, he signed up.
As he had expected it wasn't anything glamorous, in fact few of his school mates dropped out within the first three sessions.
It had made Kurt scowl, to the point that one of the older students from Nyada came and talk to him.
"Don't get so upset with the other freshmen for leaving, we always have people joining curiously in the first two weeks, and then drop by the third, believe me it would have been a lot worse had they left two weeks from now"
Kurt wasn't at all reassured by those words, though a part of his brain was committing to the memory all the minute details of the other man. The soft spoken voice, the British accent, the warmth in those ice clear eyes and the extremely good looks the blond had going for him.
Later on Kurt would not be able to say how he managed to keep from drolling as he answered honestly "Still I don't get why leaving, after taking the commitment, especially when I do know they have nothing else more pressing to do. It's..."
He pressed his lips, quickly censoring himself. If there was one thing he had picked up soon, thanks to living within the dorms, was that it didn't matter how many squabbles there might be behind closed doors, to the rest of the world they were a unite front ready to take the world by storm...
However the mischievous glint on the older man's eyes and the small grin on his lip gave away that he knew exactly what Kurt was thinking.
Suspicions confirmed as soon as he quipped half teasingly "Not that professional? Don't worry no one will say you shared such thought with me. After all this is an art program, with little to nothing in the matters of costume creation. We all knew that the chances of Parson's students to remain were slim to start with, but putting posters there anyway had been more tradition than real hope of support.."
Kurt raised an eyebrow curious "If you expect all of us to leave before seeing the production through the end, then why would it matter keeping up such tradition?"
Adam grinned "Because the school committed the error with Julliard once, not posting because there was absolutely no music connected parts into the production. Afterwards, students from Julliard refused to join on principle. So it was considered a better practice to just place the invitations, have students come and then leaving than risking alienating another big name. Even if realistically there's little to be offered or gained..."
Kurt nodded seeing the logic in the practice. He had noticed that there were no Julliard's students.
Given the competitive nature of the school, he had simply assumed students were too busy for something that in the grand scheme of thing, was a rather small and not so significant production...
Still, it was a line in one's CV as far as Kurt was concerned.
"By the way, I apologise I'm not sure we've been formally introduced, I'm Kurt Hummel" he offered a smile and his hand to the British man, who in return shook it answering easily "Adam Crawford, I'm glad though you've resisted lots longer than the others. I heard you helping out Jillian, if you have the time and inclination you could join us as we work with everyone while you do your sewing magic... If you want to?"
Kurt was rather surprised but loved the chance to learn, or at least do it so more openly rather than listening in while pretending to be super focused on working on his own part.
After that formal introduction time seemed to fly by.
Before Kurt even realised the production had been performed and all the volunteers had been called one last time to dismantle everything.
It had been a rush, but the fact that it was all done was being rather saddening to Kurt, he had grown close to all the new people he met, and there were few with whom he became quick friends. But most of all, Kurt was already missing the chance of spending time with Adam.
He had become quite attached to the other man, but now that their common goal reached its natural end, Kurt was worrying that it had all been in his head.
That there were no lingering looks, or secret small smiles, that the coffee breaks and chats had been more Adam's politeness rather than possible attraction or a chance for more...
After all they didn't even exchange numbers, so maybe Adam was just yet another straight guy Kurt had developed a crush for... A pipedream...
Packing his things one last time he walked out of the school, only to hear his name being called "Kurt, Kurt wait"
Kurt had recognised Adam's voice but he managed to turn just in time to see the older man a lot closer than he had expected, a shy smile on his face as he offered a piece of paper
"I don't know if I'm being presumptuous, or if I've completely misread the situation, but here's my number, in case you wanted it… We could meet again and go out if you'd like?"
Kurt took it gratefully and picked out his phone starting to typing it down quickly as he answered "I'd like that, here's mine so feel free to call me any time"
Adam's smile was brilliant and Kurt found himself blushing before things could get too awkward Adam asked rushedly "If you've nothing else planned on we could go on a date right now?"
Kurt blinked surprised and smiled saying "I'd like that"
At that Adam offered his hand and Kurt stilled for a moment, seeing his hesitation Adam clarified "Just to clarify, what I had in mind and was asking is a romantic date, a chance to get closer and see if we might be interested in something more than friendship, though I'll gladly accept anything you're willing to offer..."
Kurt's worries melted away as he took the offered hand flushing "I'd really love for it to be a date then"
And like many times before, Adam smiled like Kurt being there with him was the most marvellous thing that could have happened to him and started talking with the same level of ease and comfort that had been present since the first time the two met.
The production might have just ended, but apparently their story was just at the beginning.
