Andromeda
Andromeda's a big, wide open galaxy
Nothing in it for me except a heart that's lazy
Running from my own life now
I'm really turning some time
Looking up to the sky for something I may never find
Jet wasn't the only one on the ship who enjoyed a nice tune now and then. Faye enjoyed her music as well. Pop, jazz, R&B, it didn't really matter as long as it spoke to her in some way.
Everyone had their own thing. Spike ran through his Jeet Kune Do routines, Ed played on her tomato or went wondering about with Ein, and Jet trimmed his precious bonsai.
Everyone probably thought that Faye found her comfort in her trashy magazines or doing her nails. They weren't wrong; however, music was one of her true comforts. And no one knew it, her private little secret.
Since before she ever joined the Bebop, Faye fancied an aimless drift through space where she could blast her music so loud and no one could hear it. She would sit, close her eyes, and imagine being somewhere different, being someone different. Something about the solitude was nice, but when the songs were over she was only reminded that there was no one there to listen with her.
After Faye joined the Bebop, she would sneak out of her room in the middle of the night with a flashlight and hop into her Redtail's cockpit. She couldn't blast her music for risk of being caught, but she would sit there in the darkness of the hangar and just listen to it play quietly.
It was after their run in with Vincent that Spike discovered this. For whatever reason, he stood there that night and watched as she sat, flashlight faintly cast over her features, with a tune muffled behind the Redtail's rounded glass doors.
He wondered what she was up to, she looked peaceful, but really sad too. He had never seen her that way before. There was something unfortunately captivating about it.
After that, he would hear her go out almost every night, but never followed again.
Then sometime later, at the beginning of what could maybe be called them, he felt the dip in the bed disappear. Within five minutes he was fully awake, and Faye was nowhere to be seen.
He knew where she might be and debated following her.
The temptation got the best of him.
The music was a tad louder this time and he realized her door was slightly cracked open. She sang along, softly, to the beautiful voice that carried throughout the hangar. He heard something else too.
She was crying.
Without much thought Spike walked up to the cockpit, still sleepy, and opened her door all the way.
Faye gave a genuine gasp of surprise and started at him for a long moment, without any movement or words. Her eyes were red and watery, and a single tear fell along her cheek, as if in slow motion.
"Hey," was all he could offer up as he realized his intrusion.
Instead of being angry with him, Faye sighed and answered him with a tired voice.
"Hey," she moved forward to turn off the music.
"You're not asleep."
"No, I'm not."
He ran a hand through his hair, "sorry I didn't mean to stop you."
Faye laughed, he looked at her with confusion.
"You didn't mean to stop me from wallowing in my self-pity?"
The man was still confused.
Was she being sarcastic or not? He didn't like when he couldn't read her well.
"What was that?" he finally asked.
"A song…I, well I remembered something…"
He didn't say anything, just continued to awkwardly stand at the door of her cockpit.
"I've been singing this tune in my head for weeks and I finally remembered the name. My mother used to love this song, she played it in the evenings with her glass of wine, always with that red wine…she'd let me sit there and watch her tipsily dance barefoot on that shag carpet- I hated that carpet."
Her voice sounded so far away, he wanted to bring her back.
"Can I hear it?"
She looked a little surprised at his request, but then it turned to ease. Something about that made him feel good.
"Sure," she answered.
He scooped himself into the cockpit and they casually shared the seat. He closed the door, it was just the two of them in the dark, tiny light emulated only from her board system.
Faye reached forward to play the song again, they listened.
Time passed in silent appreciation as the music flowed in the round.
"It's a nice song," Spike muttered.
"Yeah…it's older than me."
He listened to the words.
It may have been older than Faye and he combined, but it didn't really matter. Music could speak to anyone, anywhere, at any place in time.
Treat me right
I'm still a good man's daughter
Let me in if I break
And be quiet if I shatter
Spike saw Faye.
There she was, leaning on his shoulder, with that similar look from all that time ago. This time, however, she didn't look so sad as she took in the music with a soft and pretty smile. Only one last single tear squeezed through the slit of her closed eye.
And it was right then he decided he could try for her.
He could try real hard for that woman.
Love is calling
It's time to give to you
Something you can hold onto
I dare you try

A/N:
Song: Andromeda - Weyes Blood [You should listen to it and read the full lyrics!]
So, I love this artist, I really enjoy 60s and 70s music, so her style really stands out to me. This song is not actually an old song (2019), but since it has that feel I played with the time a bit. Anyways, I was listening to it the other day and this scene popped into my head. Lol, i've been on such a hard SxF trail lately, I swear i'm not that obsessed. (I mean who am i kidding?)
I thought i'd release a couple of these now and then so we can skip all the difficulties that is this couple and indulge~ I legit try to write the more actiony and deeper stuff from this show and always end up backsliding on the fluff LOL. Like the show is barley fluffy, but WE NEED A LITTLE FLUFF NOW AND THEN. A side work, for real this time! [Also, if you follow the "With Love" shorts, I will be updating soon].
Releases for this work will be two at a time, no specific dates. Thanks for clicking and reading, hope you enjoy (:
