"The sins of the present"
Chapter-1
Klaus woke up in the middle of the night troubled by a dream. Dream isn't the right word nightmare is more like it.
"You are up late." Said Elijah
"I had a dream." Klaus replied
"A dream that can keep you up at night huh, now I have seen everything." Elijah waited for a snarky reply from Klaus but he didn't say anything, instead he just stood there, still, by the window looking up at the moon that's when Elijah realised this was serious.
"What is it Niklaus?"
"Don't worry about it brother its nothing I can't fix myself."
"I haven't seen you lose sleep over a stupid dream ever."
"It's not the dream that keeps me awake it's the worry that it might be true, because I can't allow it." Klaus walked out the door after saying this, Elijah followed him. While they were walking Elijah asked, "what is this thing that you are being unnecessarily secretive about brother?"
"This matter will bring you no peace Elijah, I suggest you let me deal with this the way I see fit."
Elijah pulled Klaus's hand but before he could say anything Klaus started, "Look Elijah your memory is back now you have a proper chance to grieve about Hayley, I say you take your time."
He took a pause then said, "A thousand year we have been fighting my problems or the ones I created, this one time let me do this while you look after my daughter."
"Given the recent events that have taken place I don't think I am the best babysitter choice for Hope"
"She doesn't need a babysitter. Just make sure if someone comes in this house with the wrong intentions you drain them of every drop of blood that flows in their veins."
He rushed out the main gate in the middle of the night after saying this leaving Elijah and hope alone in the Mikaelson House.
It had been a week since the day Hayley died, and hope was still blaming Elijah for her death and Elijah also held himself responsible for her death.
It was still midnight But Elijah couldn't sleep after that strange encounter with Klaus. His mind was filled with possibilities as to why Klaus wasn't telling things to Elijah maybe it was because Klaus blamed him for Hayley death too, no matter what Klaus says he loved Hayley as much as Elijah did if not more.
He heard the sound if paintbrush brushing on a canvas, He figured it was Hope but still thought it best to check why she was painting in the middle of the night.
He walked up to her room stood at her door and said, "Your father—
"NO" Said Hope before Elijah could finish
"Get out of my sight Elijah because you may be immortal but I can still make you feel a lot of pain and it still won't come close to what I felt when you let my mom die."
Not surprised by the reply Elijah decided to leave her be, the only reason Elijah was still in New Orleans was because he had hope that with time maybe his niece would forgive him but that hope was fading every day.
Chapter – 2
Klaus is standing in front a tree, the trunk of the tree reads "Hayley Marshall"
The memory of her death is still fresh in his mind, the pain still sharp as a king's sword. The pain still haunts him at night, the thought that he couldn't do more, he should have done more, he should have saved her. The Mikaelson's had defied the inevitable for over a thousand year and the one time they surrendered to it, Hayley died.
"Hope misses you. if I am being honest so, do I" Klaus said
"But unfortunately, that's not why I am here, I saw you in a dream Hayley you were afraid, running from something it was as if even the afterlife dint brings you peace but only more agony. I can't shake the feeling that somehow all of this might be true that maybe you have spent so much time with us Mikaelson's that you have been cursed to an eternity of pain and sorrow even after death."
He took a pause and then said, "Like us. But worry not I will find out what is happening and I promise you I will do right by you; you have fought long enough when you were alive you don't need to fight after you are dead too."
Klaus looked at the tree a while longer hoping maybe it would speak, "Trees don't speak, But the dead sometimes do" said a voice in his head
Klaus wanted to talk to Hayley, as bizarrely insane that sounds Klaus's mother had a spell for it in her grimoire.
Freya was not in New Orleans she was away on her honeymoon so She couldn't caste the spell he needed but someone else could, Hope.
The spell required so much power that a witch had to channel at least 2 originals so that Klaus would have enough time to talk to Hayley, but there was a catch; Only a witch linked to Hayley by blood could caste that spell.
Klaus needed Hope's help but also dint want to put her in danger by making her do a spell that strong.
But he finally decided to tell her everything the next morning.
Chapter – 3
The next morning on the breakfast table Klaus, Elijah and Hope were sitting but before they could start eating anything Klaus started, "There is something I need your help with" Looking to Hope.
"Yeah dad, what is it?"
"I need you to perform a spell for, a spell that only a you can caste."
"What spell? and why?"
Klaus took a deep breath, "I wish to speak with your mother"
Hope dropped her fork and straightened her back. Her head felt like it would explode, why would he want to do that? why now? what was going on? how did he find a spell for that?
She asked Klaus, "WHAT?! you want to talk to mom? Why? and how do you know we can even do that? and if someone is going to talk to her it should be me, I am her daughter."
Her voice began to break down a little.
Klaus interrupted, "Listen Hope I need you to trust me on this, it is important that I talk to Hayley."
"BUT WHY" She said loudly trying not to scream.
Among all this chaos Elijah was still silent not saying anything not even when Klaus looked at him and expected a reply or at least a reaction but instead he just let them talk it out among themselves.
"Last night I had a dream about your mother I won't go into the details but the essence of it was that I think she might be trapped in the afterlife maybe that she hadn't found the peace that people usually find after death and especially good-hearted people, like your mother."
Shocked by the statemen Hope just tried to say the first words that came into her mouth, "Dad sometimes a dream is just a dream."
"I know there was something real about it I could feel it, your mom and I did share a certain bond so I know that something is not right, Please Hope even if you don't believe me just help me this one time." He took a pause then said
"Hope I now you want to talk to her way more than I do but you are the only one who can caste the spell and if your caste the spell you won't be able to go in, talking to her and holding the spell at the same time will be impossible."
"Fine" she replied furiously giving Klaus a look.
Hope leaves the dining hall.
"You are awfully quite Elijah"
"I was waiting for the silence," said Elijah
"I suppose this is the reason you were up last night"
Klaus nodded his head.
"Hope doesn't have enough power for the type of spell you are asking her to do"
"No, she doesn't, but after channelling you and Marcel then she will have more than enough power"
"And how exactly do you plan on getting help from Marcel, last time I checked he hated us."
"His hatred for us is nowhere near his love for hope that's how I plan on doing this, you look disappointed Brother."
"Niklaus if this is true then I can't help but wonder maybe I am the reason she can't find peace, I hurt her way more than anyone ever could and if that is the what this is then I won't be able to forgive myself." Said Elijah getting up and leaving in a hurry.
Klaus sat there for another moment thinking about how he was going to talk to Marcel, the last time he had seen him was on Freya's wedding.
Chapter – 4
"To what do I owe the pleasure of having the mighty Klaus Mikaelson in my house without knocking, sitting on my couch" Said marcel who was half covered in a towel
"Well, the door was open"
"No, it wasn't"
"It was after I broke it"
"What do you want Klaus"
"I need you to come with so that my daughter could channel you to do a spell."
"Channel me to do a spell?" Marcel repeated.
"Might I ask what is this spell for?" Marcel added
"No, you may not" he replied
"Listen Marcellus I need your help this is about Hayley I can't let her channel myself because I have a different part to play in all this" Klaus continued.
"Hayley? Alright I'll let you do it but I need you to tell me what is going on first"
Klaus took a moment and explained everything to him and to his surprise Marcel took it rather well, he didn't say that 'a dream is just a dream' or something like that but instead he volunteered to help.
Chapter-5
Now it was time for the ritual.
The sun was about to set in New Orleans and with the darkness approaching near came the hour for the ritual.
Hope was making a ring of salt with 4 symbols around it like her aunt Freya had taught her. The ring contained some of Hayley's things like her clothes, comb, necklace, etc.
There was another salt ring inside which were supposed to be Marcel and Elijah so that she could channel that energy.
Hope began chanting the spell first to channel marcel and Elijah
"Ahh" They both grunted and eventually passed out.
Hope looking towards Klaus asked, "Are you sure about this?"
Klaus just nodded.
Then picking up her grandmother's Grimoire she started the spell.
Klaus could hear the beginning of the spell; he could still see hope his eyes locked on to her like it was the last time but after a few seconds he could only hear her voice and not see her and then it was all blank everything went dark, He couldn't feel or hear anything, he was thinking maybe this was the wrong spell maybe he had done something wrong-
"Klaus" He heard a voice call him from behind when he turned, he was in the bayou again in front of that tree but this time Hayley was there beside him.
"Hayley" Klaus said
"How are you here right now are you….?" said Hayley
"No no not yet little wolf, I am here to see you"
"How is hope?"
"She is doing just fine Hayley but the more important question is how are you? I am worried about you because with this spell you can only meet those who still lurk around in our reality not those who have already found peace, so how are you here Hayley?"
Hayley dint say anything, she was quiet for a while.
"Elijah" She later said
Klaus asked "what about Elijah?"
"The very reason Elijah and I were apart, the reason he decided to erase his memory was because I couldn't have him around hope, because I dint want that for her, I wanted her to be better than him, better than us. And now I see him there with you and Hope it feels wrong to me that maybe she will see that Elijah's first instinct to any problem is violence and what if she learns that from him Klaus?"
Klaus couldn't find any words to say he was shocked that this was the reason behind all of it.
The spell was becoming weak Klaus could feel it so if he had something to say he had to say it now.
"I can't just let Elijah go, he is my brother"
"I know Klaus I know I could never let him go myself and where did that get me?" Hayley replied more like a statement than a question.
The spell was about to break
"Tell hope I love her"
After that the spell broke.
Chapter – 6
When Klaus woke up, Hope, Elijah and Marcel were all passed out. He picked Hope up and took her to her bedroom and laid her on her bed.
By the time he got back down Marcel and Elijah had booth woken up.
"What happened? what did you see?" Asked Marcel
"Nothing I dint see her, maybe it was just a false dream Afterall. She wasn't there that means she found peace."
"Alright then I'll be on my way, hope to never see you again Mikaelson's and give Hope y regards when she wakes up."
Marcel leaves their house after saying that.
"Niklaus, I have known you long enough to tell when you are lying, I will only ask you once brother 'What did you see?'"
"I saw Hayley, the dream was all true" Klaus replied.
"Did you talk to her? ask her what was bothering her?"
"She thinks I won't be a good father to Hope and quite frankly I don't blame her for it" Said Klaus because it was easier to lie then break Elijah's heart. Klaus knew that if he told Elijah, Elijah would go far away from hope as far as he could but also away from Klaus.
"Niklaus our father was an evil man. He did us a lot of damage but the one good thing he did was that he set an example for us, he taught us to be everything he never was and you will never repeat his mistakes because you suffered most at his hands so you will now better than to raise your daughter like Mikael raised us" Elijah said with a comforting voice.
And it all was very comforting to hear. Hayley hadn't said it but Klaus had doubted his ability to be a father way more times than he could count.
"And about Hayley she will be around on the other side and she will how good of a father you turn out to be and then one day she will find peace." Elijah continued.
It was times like this when he needed Elijah when Klaus was doubting himself, when he needed someone to confide in, when he needed someone to trust. Because Elijah was the best brother Klaus could have, he couldn't send him away. But he couldn't just let Hayley suffer. What was he going to do? He had no idea.
The next morning Hope was going to leave for mystic falls high and stay there in the hostel.
As usual they were supposed to have breakfast together but the next morning Klaus woke up about 2 pm which was way later than he usually did by that time Hope had already left.
Klaus was wondering why she dint say goodbye or at least talk to him before she left, could this be because of Hayley? No of course not Klaus never got the chance to tell her what had happened.
He decided he should call her and when he did the call straight went to voicemail. "Hope it's me, call me as soon as you get this message, I need to talk to you about what happened."
Elijah was nowhere to be found he wasn't home and he his cell was going straight to voice mail.
Klaus was getting worried what if somehow Elijah had found out and took it upon himself to stay away from Hope and Klaus?
No there is no way that could have happened, no one except Klaus knew what had happened between him and Hayley but also, he was unusually late asleep today what if that was the result of a spell?
Half of the day had passed; it was almost time for sunset but Hope hadn't called and there was still no sign of Elijah.
Klaus's phone rang.
"Hey dad," said hope.
"Thank god you called Hope, you left without saying goodbye and now Elijah is nowhere to be found anymore."
"Yes, dad I just thought that spell might have taken its toll on you so you'd be out for a while. So, I just figured I'd call you when I could. And what's up with uncle Elijah going missing."
"I don't know Hope but I am getting worried about him."
"Maybe it's what happened between you and mom that drove him away."
"What?" Klaus asked surprised at the thought that Hope knew. How could she have known but Elijah believed what Klaus told him.
"You told uncle Elijah what mom said about her not finding peace because of him so maybe he just left, you know."
"I never told Elijah about that, I never told you about that. How do you know about that?" Said Klaus hoping that his fear hadn't come true.
"You dint tell uncle Elijah?" Hope asked sounding genuinely surprised.
"No"
"Oh shit"
"Listen dad there was a loophole I couldn't talk to her with casting that spell but I could watch and hear whoever was talking to her so I watched and when I heard the truth, I took it upon myself to do the right thing, because I knew you wouldn't."
"Hope what did you do?" Klaus asked her temper started to rise but also there was a feeling in his heart that maybe Hope had done the right thing.
"Dad I know this isn't what you wanted to do, you wanted to handle things on your own but I couldn't just do nothing. My mom is dead" she paused, trying not to say 'because of me'
"The least I can do is make sure she is at peace" she continued.
"Where is Elijah?" Asked Klaus.
"Somewhere you don't have to follow dad."
"Where is he" Klaus said more like a command then a question.
"He is asleep dad let's leave it at that"
"How did things work out the last time you kidnapped a member of our family Hope. We have enemies in every part of the world."
"That's not my fault, what's done is done dad." And she cut the call.
Chapter - 7
Now Klaus would have to do a locator spell and find Elijah but what if he was clocked hope would have surely clocked him, but right now he had no better ideas so he decided to go with this.
"Freya! how good to hear you voice after so long. How is the honeymoon going? Has the bitter realisation that almost all marriages end in divorce set in yet?" Said Klaus on the phone.
"I miss you too brother, now I know you aren't the missing and calling type so tell me what is it you need from me" replied Freya
"well, I dint have anything particular in mind but since you asked, I would like you to do a locator spell for me to find Elijah he seems to be a little mad at me and I can't get a hold of him."
"Alright but that is the last time you disturb me on my honeymoon."
"No promises sister dear" And then he cut the call.
He later got a text from Freya; it consisted some address from California.
Elijah was in California
Klaus took the next flight out thought he would just compel a private plain and bring Elijah back home. But how was he not clocked? If Hope had wanted to do this she must have had a better protection plan at least.
A protection plan, Hope did have a protection plan. She was a Mikaelson witch she had a backup plan for a backup plan too. That's why Klaus was asleep for that long. Because after sending Elijah away she cast another spell but not on Elijah this time on Klaus. He still hadn't found what that plan was yet but he was about to discover it.
As soon as the plane reached the borders of California, a pain started in Klaus's head, a pain so strong like he had never experienced before. And within seconds he just passed out on that plane.
The spell Hope had cast was one that would make Klaus's head hurt so much that he would pass out every time he went near Elijah. As the distance between him and Elijah would decrease, the pain would increase. Hope's is his father's daughter Afterall.
Chapter – 8
Klaus woke up and the pain started again but as he moved away the pain got slower. He had known his daughter long enough to know that this was her backup plan. She didn't need to cloak him because Elijah and Klaus couldn't be near each other anymore without experiencing unbelievable pain.
Klaus called Hope.
She picked up and started laughing.
"This is not funny Hope."
"It is if you think about it" she said still laughing.
"Hope undo this right now"
"Why huh what's the point, he is away mom is at peace what more do you need."
"He is unconscious for god's sake! He is not safe!"
"Oh, please dad don't be dramatic, he must be awake by now. And I think he can take care of himself"
Klaus was getting another call when he looked to check, it was Elijah.
Klaus cut Hope's call immediately and picked up Elijah's call.
"Elijah" He asked.
"Oh, you wish" A woman's voice came back.
"Whoever this is if you so much as touch a hair on my brother's head I will kill you and everyone you have ever loved."
Klaus said furiously. He was worried about Elijah. That this was all his mess. He should never have involved Hope in this.
"Oh, you already did that Klaus, I am calling to tell you that your brother is resting safely at the bottom of the ocean and you are going to be next." She said with so much confidence Klaus was almost afraid for a second.
And then she broke the phone.
"Dad you just put me on hold what happened." Said hope who was on hold all this while.
"Hope listen to me whatever happens do not leave Mystic falls, do you understand me it is essential you stay there for your safety. Things are not looking good here, take care of yourself hope."
He then cut the call.
Hope was wandering how this conversation went from Klaus being mad at hope about Elijah to him being concerned about her well being all of a sudden.
She was confused. Had something happened? Did something happen to Elijah?
Hope still blamed Elijah for Hayley but that was just a distraction, she in her heart believed that it was Hope's fault that Hayley was dead that her mother was dead. So, she was going to do anything she could to make sure at least she was at peace. But had her pointless try towards redemption done the same to Elijah what had happened to Hayley.
Now what was she going to do she couldn't have gone back her dad won't even look at her even if she did.
Chapter -9
Klaus started wondering who could this be. "You already did that Klaus" he kept repeating those words over and over in his head hoping to find a resemblance in that voice, but he couldn't figure out who she was.
"Freya sorry to disturb you again but Elijah seems to be moving fast I need another locator spell." He texted Freya.
"He is cloaked this time Klaus" Said Freya on the phone.
"What's wrong Klaus, if you need my help, I can comeback quite fast I am not that far away."
"No Freya after a long time you are with the woman you love I won't get in the way of your happiness."
"But promise me you will call me if things get out of hand."
"I promise you, sister." He said with a smile.
He then cut the call.
He still hadn't figured out who this girl was who had taken Elijah and dropped him in water.
And after Elijah woke from Hope's spell he will begin to drown and he will keep on drowning over and over again.
Klaus had to find out who she is.
He tried calling Elijah's cell but it was switch off (Klaus dint know she broke the phone)
Now Klaus was all alone this time. No Elijah, no Freya, no Rebekah and no Hope. If he wanted to do something he would have to do it all by himself.
Chapter – 10
Hope came home the other morning, still wearing her school uniform from last night.
"DAD! DAD!" she began screaming as she entered the house
Klaus came down the stairs his face looked like he had not gotten any sleep at all last night either.
As soon as she saw her his face turned pale as if screaming "why did you come here"
"Hope I told you not to come"
"That's how I knew that you needed me right now. Tell me what's going on"
"Elijah has been taken"
Hope's face dropped.
"Someone I don't know who, took his body and threw it in an ocean and now we can't seem to find it. It's been clocked."
Hope's fear had come true.
"Who is this person? and why does he want to harm Elijah?"
"it's a woman and I don't think she wants to harm Elijah she wants to hurt me; she is an old foe I am guessing but I cannot place who."
"Then how do You plan on getting him back"
"I am on my way to meet a witch who might be able to find that woman"
He started walking out the gate.
"Wait I am coming with you" Hope said
"No, you do-"
Then Klaus gets stuck and can't get past the gate
He tries punching it but its like there is an invisible wall
"A barrier spell"
"What is this? someone placed a barrier spell around my own house"
Hope tried to go out but couldn't either
"I am not a vampire I should be able to leave" Hope said
"No, this spell isn't to keep in vampire's, it is to keep in anyone with Mikaelson blood" Klaus replied
"she must have used Elijah's blood to do this. I need to call and warn Freya. She might have a spell you could do to break this thing."
They both went silent for a bit.
"I am sorry dad I dint mean for any of this to happen "Hope said her voice breaking down
"I was just so mad at uncle Elijah; I just was mad at myself too, I guess. First mom died then Elijah now we are going to die as well, both of us and it will all be my fault" she continued with a hint of tears gathering in her eyes.
"No one is going to die today Hope a little death threat is nothing out of the blue for the Mikaelson's," Klaus said
He took a pause then started, "And Elijah is not your fault, sooner or than later I would have done it Anyway."
"So here you are the mighty Klaus Mikaelson trapped in his own home, who would have thought?" In came a young girl but not coming inside the boundary of the spell.
Klaus and Hope looked at her.
"Who are you?" Klaus asked
"All in good time Klaus, all in good time" she replied waving her hand.
And with that motion hope was stuck to the wall behind them.
"Ahhhhhhhhh I can't move!" Hope said trying to break free but all efforts were in vain.
"I have nothing against you kid." She said and then threw hope into the wall on the left side so hard that she passed out.
"Now we can talk"
"Would you be offended if I said I don't remember you" Klaus said.
"Oh no, I dint expect you to I was 4 when we last saw each other. If I remember correctly, you were ripping open my family in front of me" she replied with a sense of rage developing inside her.
"I am not the monster I once was"
"That doesn't make my pain go away, but what I am about to you might."
"And what do you plan to do? Bore me to death? Because I am the immortal hybrid I can't be killed and eternity is a very long time for me to exact my vengeance on you" Klaus Said.
"Spoken like a true monster."
She then took out a page from her pocket it had a spell written on it.
Klaus grew worried, it was a spell he had seen before, it was one from his mother's grimoire.
The spell that she planned on using in Mystic falls after linking Klaus and his sibling and then turning them back from vampires to humans.
"Even if that is what I think it is you don't have enough power to put it to use."
"Oh, don't you worry about power I am already channelling Elijah and Marcel and now I will begin to channel you and your daughter" she replied
Klaus grew impatient, his eyes turned green. He started banging the spell hoping that alone would break it. He started to think of idea of what he could do. Hope was out or she could have broken the spell. Freya wasn't home and there was no cell connection.
He broke a chair and picked its wooden leg and threw it at her with full speed.
With a wave of her arm, she deflected it.
"It's of no use Klaus the spell is about to begin"
She began chanting the spell and Klaus fell to his knees.
"Ahhhhhhhhh" he was screaming.
"You will die for this; my family will force a fate worse than death on you! They will wash these walls with your blood"
Klaus was struggling to move but he couldn't. was this supposed to be his end.
Chapter - 11
"You are so short-sighted Klaus you dint even think to question the dream for one second. Your dead ex comes in your dream and tells you to persecute Elijah at the same time when Freya is away too. Dint that all sound too convenient to you. I knew you would use that spell in your mother's grimoire to talk to her, made it easy to manipulate. I was at least expecting more of a fight but you will die a fool, Klaus Mikaelson."
She was halfway through with her spell and Klaus could already feel his energy being drained out of him every second. Maybe this is what he deserved all along he began to think as he started to lose hope for his survival because this time he was all alone.
"Look at your daughter one last time Klaus because it's time to go" she said.
Klaus looked at hope
"I am sorry Hope" he said
"Goodbye Klaus" she said.
But before she could finish the spell a knife cut through her leg.
"Ahh" she screamed in pain
"Your name is Adelene Bocheron your mother was Adriana Bocheron."
Came in Rebekah Mikaelson
"You took care of two siblings but you forgot me" Rebekah said.
"AHH I'll take care of you too" she said screaming but still in pain.
She picked her up and threw her through the gate and into the boundary spell where Klaus was.
"I am way stronger than any of you"
"Not for long" Rebekah came back and picked Klaus up.
"You can feel it can't you that poison working up your leg all the way to your heart. It's fascinating how quick that works"
"I can still do the spell"
"You would die first. Sweetheart I never miss, I just wanted to watch you suffer" Rebekah said
"but if you want to live, I have a cure right here all you have to do is let me out." She continued and raised up a vail from her pocket.
"If I do, you will kill me"
"No, we won't" Klaus said
"We won't?" Rebekah asked
"No, this girl is right. I remember her mother Adriana and I remember the look in her eyes as drained her of every drop of blood she had, as I made her watch you."
"I don't deserve forgiveness for what I have don't but if you give me a chance, I will heal you."
She knew it was a lie. She should know better than to trust a guy she just tried to murder. But she could feel the poison already coming close to her heart she was about to fade.
"Let me help you" Klaus said.
"You killed her" she said before she fell down on the floor but with her last movement, she opened the barrier spell and let them free.
"Where am I" Adelene said opening her eyes slowly.
"Not hell if that is what you are worried about" Klaus said
"You healed me"
"As I said I am not the same man I once was"
"I have made a lot of mistakes in my life kid, but these past few years I have only tried to make up for them." He continued.
"So now what? You might as well kill me I have no reason to live for anyway" she said
"No, you don't. I understand how vengeance can be a great motivation to lead your life but what had you planned to do after killing me?"
"Get murdered by one of your other siblings" she said
"I have a better option, how about I compel you to forget the pain that came with your mother's death and tell you to get everything you want in life and be happy once you get It. You could go to mystic falls high with my daughter I am sure they would very much accept a young and talented witch like you who brought the Mikaelson's to their knees"
"Okay" she said
"That was quick"
"I have lived with sadness and anger most of my life. With one single goal. But now I don't want that anymore and I don't want the pain that comes with it either. So yeah, I think I am ready." She began to stand up wiping a tear that had developed on in her eye.
