Y/N was sitting at her desk, quietly observing those around her. Although she was relatively antisocial, people fascinated her. It felt like a game. She would predict people's moves, personalities, etc. for fun. It made some people uncomfortable, but to be honest? Y/N didn't care. At the present moment, she was participating in the entrance exam for Tu-Oh University. She was relatively smart and could probably get into a better university if she had tried. Unfortunately, her fatal flaw was her laziness and lack of effort towards things that did not interest her. As she was observing the room, she noticed a large amount of tension between two odd individuals.
One of the individuals she recognized almost immediately. It was a brown-haired, conventionally attractive boy named Light. He had gone to her high-school, and they knew each-other relatively well. They weren't close friends or anything of that sort, but they were both top students so they tended to stick together during group projects and such. Light used to be a genuine individual. He cared for his classmates and was a role-model for everyone. Both students and teachers alike loved him. He was the perfect student-well almost.
Recently, Y/N noticed a small change in his behavior. Though he acted the same, there were small differences in his mannerisms. It was strange. He seemed to look down on others, as if he were better-not in the academic sense-but as if he were a complete different being, as if he thought himself a higher power. On top of that, he seemed nervous. Perhaps he was paranoid? He'd often stare into space or shift his eyes-like he was expecting something to happen.
Y/N could not recognize the other individual. It was a man the she had never seen before. He was thin and lanky with shaggy black hair and dark eye bags. His clothes were relatively plain and loose. He seemed to be staring at Light intensely. Was it out of jealousy maybe? No, not that. He didn't seem like the type to be jealous of a man like Light. Was he looking at Light's answers? Y/N looked over at the frail mans test and compared it to Light's. Nope, he was further along on his test than Light was. Y/N stared at him, observing each inch of him, trying to figure him out and why he was looking at Light. Oooo~ a crush? Y/N snickered at her own joke. She eventually concluded that he was observing Light and that he was similar to her. She developed some sort of desire to talk to him. He seemed to be an odd character, one that would be fun to analyze. She planned to go up to him after the exams, but never had the chance.
Not long after the exam was finished, three students were called up to the stage because they had all gotten the highest score. It was quite obviously Y/N and Light, but unexpectedly the dark-haired man was there too. It's not that she didn't think he was smart, but rather that it was ALWAYS her and Light. There's just never been another person. Y/N took her turn speaking and then sat down. She didn't really have much to say. She said the basic "try your best, give it your all, follow your dreams" speech that was probably copy and pasted from her middle school gym teacher. Light's speech was pretty standard as well so she didn't pay much attention. However, one thing did come from the speeches- Y/N now had a name to a face. Apparently, the raven-haired guy was named 'Hideki Ryuga'-like the pop star. This seemed highly unlikely to be his actual name and was most likely an alias. 'I wonder why...' Y/N thought to herself. 'This just keeps getting more interesting'.
Y/N made sure to seat herself closely behind the two boys so that she could monitor and observe them. She carefully listened and eavesdropped on their conversation until...
"I am L"
...
'Holy sh*t'
...
This was L??? LIKE- L? L? Famous Detective L?? Y/N quickly felt her heartbeat rise with excitement. 'holy sh*t, holy sh*t, holy sh*t!" It wasn't like she was a major fan of him specifically, but rather of true crime in general and she looked up to him quite a bit. For the most part, he came to the same conclusion that she did for cases and he played a huge part in solving her favorite, pretty niche crime, the 'Los Angeles BB Murder Cases'. After her initial freak out and panic session she froze- 'Why would he tell Light?' Y/N bit her lip as she watched them. 'Wait- could Light be the suspect?' She started paying closer attention and observing them more attentively and concluded that that was the case. Though they both appeared calm at the surface, if someone were to look a bit deeper they could easily notice the tension and how the boys' conversation felt full of force, as if each word were an arrow and their tongues were bows. 'But could Light really be Kira?' Y/N pondered to herself. 'Well, it's definitely possible. Light's personality change started happening at the same time that the heart attacks did, although I thought it was more like anger against Kira. He certainly has the personality for it.' Suddenly, something caught her ear in the conversation.
"I'd like to continue this conversation but it unfortunately appears that someone is staring"
'sh*t'
(Switch from third person to second person point of view)
Both boys turned to look back at you and you quickly turned your head to the side to appear as if you weren't listening. Obviously, it didn't work and the boys continued to stare at you until Light finally spoke up.
"Hey Y/N!"
"Oh h-hi Light." You stumbled. Dammit. If they didn't know for sure that you were staring before, it was confirmed now.
"Nice job on the exam!! You always put amazing effort into your answers and tie with me. I'm always impressed!" He laughed cheerfully to himself.
"Not really, thank you though!" You fake smiled back. Light raised an eyebrow.
"Stop being humble Y/N! You worked a lot harder than a lot of the other students back in high-school."
"Yada-Yada," you said as the both of you laughed, "yeah surreeee."
"Y/N, I'm serious." He frowned.
"And I'm bright pink. This conversation is stupid. Anyway, who's that?" You nodded towards L.
"It seems as if you already know the answer to that question. You were listening to our conversation. Don't try to play dumb." L stated bluntly.
"Sorry.." You winced. "I promise I won't tell anyone."
"I'd hope not. Otherwise, I'd have to get rid of you and that'd be rather troublesome." L had scratched his feet together.
"Not to be insensitive, but why aren't you wearing shoes?"
"So I can sit like this. It's better for thinking."
"Oh." Everyone sat awkwardly for a second until Light started up another conversation.
"Well, does anyone want to go out to the courtyard? It's a nice day out, it'd be a waste to stay inside."
You and L hummed in response and the three of you got up and started heading towards the door.
