This was posted in Captain America's part because Falcon and Winter wasnt on here yet. I hope you all enjoy.
Bucky's morning was off to a bad start. He was woken up by his phone ringing. A phone call he hoped he would never get, one that he should have never had had to deal with if his best friend hadn't have gone back in time. They were suppose to have grown old the same time and have told their children all the things they had done in life and how the times had changed so much. As he drove to the hospital his heart pounded in his chest.
He wanted to see his friend and be there for him but at the same time he just couldn't say goodbye. How could he? He was so in thought that he had to slam on the breaks to keep from ramming the car sitting at the red light in front of him. "Shit." Bucky said as the person behind him laid on the horn giving him the middle finger pissed that they almost ran into him.
"Sorry." He said waving his hand at the pissed off man who was now pulled up next to him.
"Get off your phone you stupid fuck! Someone could have died!" The older man yelled his face red giving Bucky the look of death.
"I wasn't." Bucky said wondering why the man thought he was on his phone. Why would he be on his phone when he was driving? And someone was going to die today but it wouldn't be anyone in any of these cars.
The light went green and he headed to the hospital trying to focus on the road. Once he found a spot he parked shaking his head as he got out and noticed how badly he had parked, the drivers side back wheel over the white line.
"Oh well." He told himself as he entered the hospital knowing by heart what room he was going to since for almost a month he came here almost daily. Each day his heart ached when he left thinking it could be the last time he saw his friend or the last talk they would have.
As he entered the room he looked at the old man laying in the bed with his eyes closed breathing slowly.
"Bucky." The old man said a sad smile on his lips as he opened his tired blue eyes.
"I got here as fast as I could. How you doing Steve?" He asked taking a seat in the chair next to the bed.
"I'm doing alright. But you know….almost at peace." Steve said looking over at Bucky.
"Don't talk like that man." Bucky said looking away from Steve and at his feet as tears started to form thinking about what he knew was coming.
"I lived a long and happy life Buck, you know that. I only have a few regrets." Steve reached out his shaky hand placing it on Bucky's forearm.
Bucky looked up shaking his head. "You shouldn't have any regrets."
"If I could do it again I would have brought you back with me. Instead I left you behind to face your demons alone." Steve told him his voice low. "You needed someone to watch your six and help you though your guilt. The guilt that shouldn't be yours."
"I don't want to talk about it Steve. I'm ok. And you need to not feel guilty. You got the happy life you more then deserved. I was more at peace knowing that you got what was taken from you." He told his friend taking his hand and giving it a squeeze.
Steve closed his eyes feeling his heart glow thinking about his beautiful wife and how happy they were. He knew it the moment he saw her that she was the one for him. She was there for him every time he got low and sad missing his friends. He remembered feeling guilty that when he and Peggy were saying there vows that the man he wanted by his side was missing, his best man.
"I knew the moment you left what you were planning on doing. Just like I knew from the look in your eyes when I saw you on the bench that it was worth it. So please don't feel guilty." Bucky said getting up and looking over at the sink in the corner of the room. "You want some water?"
"I'm good." Steve said followed by a long painful cough.
The room was all of a sudden lighting up with flashes of light. Bucky looked over to the window where the blinds were pulled up, about a dozen reporters were standing there all with camera up against the window. Anger started to bubble inside Bucky's stomach. "What the hell are they doing here!"
Bucky headed to the door, fire in his eyes, he was going to put an end to all the reporters.
"Bucky...Please don't. Just pull the blinds down."
"Who the hell would leak something like this to the news? Idiots?" Bucky said as he pulled the cord on the first blinds then the second. As he pulled the cord on the third the cord broke away the blind still up. "Come on!" Bucky yelled frustration getting the best of him as he pulled at the top of the blind causing it to fall to the floor. Bucky knew his day was going to be the worst day for him, even the small stuff that he shouldn't be bothered by was getting to him. He picked up the fallen blinds from the floor raising it he swung it at the window causing it to splinter but not break the metal inside keeping it from breaking. He knew he could have hit it harder.
"Go home!" He yelled at the reporters who all took a step back in shock.
There shock didn't last long as they once again started taking photos. "That's it!"
"Bucky…" Steve's weak voice called out, but fell on deaf ears.
Bucky opened the door and stepped outside. "I said go home! What is wrong with you people? Do you all get joy out of someone dying! Is money and a story more important to you people then having a heart? You disrespectful cold hearted shits! " His hands balling into fist.
"Are you his body guard?" The dark haired younger reporter asked.
"No, I'm his family." Bucky said stepping closer to the kid. "I would leave if I was you. All of you." He told them looking around.
"How long do you think he has left?" One said. "Can we get his last words recorded?" Came another reporter's question followed by the rest all putting their two cents in, saying the worst of things.
"Could we get an interview with him before he dies?"
"Will he sigh this photo before he dies?"
"Can we get one from you after he dies?"
"When will the funeral be? And where will it take place?"
"When is he going to die?" "Where is he going to be buried?" "What would you s….." That was it. Bucky didn't let the man finish before he shoved his fist hard into the mans face. Too many questions and too many with the word dies in it. He didn't need to think about Steve dying, couldn't.
The man fell to the floor blood gushing out of his noise that was clearly broken, the camera he was holding falling at Bucky's feet. None of the other reporters moving or talking anymore. Bucky stomped the camera breaking it into small pieces. "All of you hand over your camera's now!"
"Sir you can't do this. Its against our constitutional rights."
"Really? What about his?! And what about his privacy? Would you want a bunch of assholes to be taking photos of you when you're dy…" Bucky stopped himself knowing he couldn't finish. Tears started to form burning his eyes, his jaw clinched. "Leave!" He yelled at them, they got the hint and turned to leave one of the men helping the bloody boy up.
Bucky opened the door and went inside the room but his heart stopped when he saw a man in plain cloths standing over Steve's bed camera in hand. Bucky couldn't believe his eyes how did a reporter manage to sneak by him. "What the hell do you think you're doing?" He asked walking up behind the man.
"Do you know what kind of story this will make? How it will help my career? I will be the number one in this city!" The man said a huge smile on his face. "Open your eyes Steve." He said shaking Steve's shoulder.
"Get your hands off him." Bucky warned the man, then when he didn't stop Bucky's metal arm came up grabbing the mans arm jerking it from Steve's shoulder. "Don't you dare touch him." Twisting the mans arm causing him to cry out. "What the hell is wrong with you? You're not invited and you have no rights to be here."
"Come on man, it's my job. My name is Adam." Adam said trying to pull his arm away from Bucky.
"I don't care what your name is. Leave or I'll do more then just twist your arm." He told him letting Adam go. "Get out! Now." He warned the man his anger was going to get the best of him.
"Ok. But one more photo! It will make me millions!" Adam said lifting the camera up taking another photo of Steve who let out a groan from the bright light.
That was the last straw for Bucky as he grabbed the camera pulling it from the mans neck the cord breaking the man falling to the floor. Bucky threw the camera to the wall as hard as he could causing it to shatter and make a hole in the wall. "I warned you!"
Bucky raised his arm about to shove it into Adam's face when his therapist voice entered his head. 'You're not allowed to hurt anyone.' Shaking his head he grabbed the man who was shaking in fear by the back of his shirt and dragged him to the hallway. "I better not catch you any where near this room again."
Adam looked up at him the fear showing in his eyes as his body shook.
Bucky slammed the door locking it behind him. He went back to where Steve was laying, his eyes closed. His heart monitor seemed slower then before he left. "Steve?" He wasted so much time with the reporters he hated the thought that they messed up his final moments with the man who was like a brother to him. "Remember when prom was coming up and you had a crush on the most popular girl in school? I forgot her name but man she made you clam up and sweat anytime she walked by you. She never noticed you until you finally got the nerve to ask her to prom. I helped you cut cardboard out for your shoes."
Bucky said letting out a little laugh tears wanting to fall. "Never worked for you but it made you feel more confident. I mean when you asked she looked past the top of your head like you weren't even there, a total bitch. Bet she regretted that later in life." The slow beeping in the back was the only response.
Bucky grabbed Steve's hand with his own giving it a squeeze. "You were always my best friend Steve. My brother, the one I could always count on, you had my back when no one else would. I wish I could have been there for you when you went back." Bucky couldn't hold back his tears as they fell, Steve's hand was growing colder. At least he could be there so Steve wouldn't be alone. All his family were gone and he wasn't able to say goodbye to any of them. "I'm ganna miss you Steve. Your the best man I've ever known, I'm lucky you picked me for a brother."
"I love you too Buck." Came a faint whisper from Steve.
Thanks to their better hearing Bucky heard him, but the large lump in the back of his throat caused Bucky to choke.
"I'll see you at the end of the line." Steve whispered his eyes not opening but he took a shaky breath in. A small smile he exhaled his hand Bucky was holding became a clammy cold.
"Steve?" Bucky said his forehead resting on Steve's forearm not daring to look up knowing in his heart he was gone. The long constant deep of the machine in the background that he barely heard over the blood rushing in his ears confirming it. Bucky's heart felt as if someone reached inside his chest and had a death grip on it. A part of him dying inside along with his life time best friend leaving him all alone once again.
