I'm happy to introduce you to a new fanfiction but this time it's about a cross-over on the universe of Harry Potter and the Vampire Diaries.
Disclaimer:
The universe of Harry Potter and its characters are the exclusive property of J.K. Rowling just as the universe and the characters of Vampire Diaries belong to L.J. Smith as well as to the writers of the series Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson.
Only the story belongs to me and the OC characters.
Genre: Romance/Adventure
Rating: Young Adult
Main pairing: Severus/Damon
Warning: For some time now, I've been exploiting the character of Severus Snape in many forms and don't hesitate to make it completely OOC to my delight, so this fanfiction will be no exception.
Summary :
Severus Snape had come to terms with the idea that Lily Potter born Evans would never be his friend again, let alone since his left arm was stained with the Dark Mark and they were both fighting for opposing sides.
When Lily comes to ring at his door to beg for his help, he cannot bring himself to accept her last wishes although he is partly responsible for the danger that threatens his family.
Several years after Lily's death, Severus finds himself in a bind when he learns that Dumbledore is determined to sacrifice the child of the woman he loved and continues to love. He is faced with a choice again and he knows that this time around there will be no second chance to save young Potter from the clutches of Dumbledore and the Dark Lord.
But is he even ready to become someone else and defy the laws of nature for the sole purpose of protecting the child from the woman he loves? Will he be able to assume the consequences?
What future will be his and Harry's when, in spite of himself, they find themselves confronted with a world, that until now, he did not know? How do you survive in this world when you become a new person?
Important: I'm not a native English speaker so please apologize for any errors you will encounter while reading. For those who are French speakers, you can find this story on my Wattpad account by searching for the story by its title or by my name: Lucrezia Di Vocula
Author's Note:
For more consistency and to adapt the scenario to TVD, this fanfiction takes place in 2009.
Which means Harry Potter was born in 1993, not 1980, and James and Lily died in 1994.
He slammed the door furiously and ran down the stairs, hurrying to his apartments which were located in the basements of the castle. He walked over to his mini bar and grabbed a bottle of Ogden's Old Firewhiskey, then poured himself a finger of fiery whiskey which he gulped down. He groaned in anger as he replayed the scene from earlier in his head and in excess of rage he took the bottle of alcohol and threw it with all his might at the opposite wall. It exploded on contact with the wall and shards of glass scattered all over the living room as the amber liquid spilled on the wall as well as on the sofa.
"Harry must continue to ignore until the last moment, until it is necessary for him to know, otherwise how could he have the strength to accomplish what must be done?"
"And what must he accomplish?"
"It remains between Harry and me. Now listen to me carefully, Severus. The time will come, after my death – don't argue, don't interrupt! The moment will come when Lord Voldemort will seem to be worried for the life of his snake."
"Nagini?"
The master of potions seemed amazed.
"Exactly. If one day Voldemort stops sending this snake to carry out his orders and keeps him safe with him, under magical protection, then I think we can safely reveal everything to Harry."
"Tell him what?"
Dumbledore took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
"Reveal to him that on the night Voldemort tried to kill him, when Lily erected her own life like a shield between them, the Killing Curse ricocheted off the Dark Lord and a fragment of his soul was destroyed ripped off. This fragment clung to the only living soul left in this devastated house part of Lord Voldemort thus lives inside Harry. This is what gives him the power to talk to snakes and establishes a connection with Lord Voldemort the nature of which he has never understood and as long as this soul fragment, unbeknownst to Voldemort, remains attached to and protected by Harry, Lord Voldemort cannot die."
"So this boy… this boy must die?" Severus asked with some calm.
"And Voldemort will have to kill him with his own hand, Severus. It's essential."
Again, a long silence fell. Then Snape continued:
"I believed… all these years… that we were protecting him for her. For Lily."
"We protected him because it was fundamental to teach him, to nurture him, to allow him to test his strength," Dumbledore replied, his eyelids still tightly closed. "During this time, the connection that existed between them developed, like a parasitic outgrowth: sometimes I thought he suspected it himself. If I know him well, he will have done what it takes so that, the day he meets his own death, it will also be Voldemort's true end."
Dumbledore opened his eyes again. Severus looked horrified.
"You kept him alive so that he could die at the right time?"
"Don't be shocked, Severus. How many men and women have you seen die?"
"Recently, only the ones I couldn't save," said the potionist.
He stood up.
"You used me."
"What do you mean?"
"That I spied for you, lied for you, that I ran mortal dangers for you. All of this was to ensure the safety of Lily Potter's son. And now you tell me that you raised him like a pig for slaughter …"
"This is very touching, Severus," Dumbledore remarked seriously. "Did you come to love this boy?"
The Potions Master gritted his teeth and, in the grip of an impressive fury, he began to smash everything in his rooms, unable to control his anger.
"Go to hell, Dumbledore!" he cried.
He couldn't believe he had spent all these years keeping Potter safe just to put him in the dark lord's care when the time was right. He had thought, that for once, he belonged to the right camp and that he was finally doing something right, that he was redeeming his faults and atoning for his sins but now he suddenly learned that he wasn't was nothing.
Once again, he had failed his best friend. He had not kept his word to always protect his son, on the contrary, he was unconsciously participating in his killing.
He scanned the room he was in and almost tore his hair out, trying to find a solution that would allow him to get the boy to safety. Now that he knew Dumbledore's true intentions, there was no way he would continue to participate in this madness. Potter was his Lily's son and he had promised her that he would never let anything happen to his son, that he would protect him at the risk of his life.
A taste of bitterness crept slowly into his mouth and he sneered wryly as he thought about the last conversation he had with Lily, before Lily was killed by the Dark Lord through his fault.
"What do you want, Lily?"
"So is that how you receive an old friend? I thought you would be a little happier to see me again."
The young man sighed before looking suspiciously at the people around them. The redhead had arranged to meet him at a Muggle bar in the capital, believing that it would be safer for the two to meet in a non-magical place so safe from prying eyes.
"I can't stay long, I …"
"I know", the redhead interrupted. "I learned that you were overwhelmed by the orders made by your master."
The former Slytherin suddenly tensed at the mention of the Dark Lord and bowed his head in shame. He now regretted taking the mark and joining the Death Eaters, but the damage had long been done. He couldn't change it.
"If that's all you had to tell me."
He stood up, grabbed his second-hand jacket, and was held back by a soft, pale hand that rested on his wrist.
"I'm sorry, Sev. That's not what I meant", the lioness apologized.
He felt his heart pound at the nickname. It had been a long time since he heard it, and he hadn't realized how much he loved the ridiculous nickname.
"Please stay," she added.
He scanned the surroundings, uneasy in the midst of all these strangers. He hated crowds. He finally sat down and carefully avoided the gaze of the young woman.
"Why did you want to see me?" he asked while playing with the straw of his orange juice.
"I know you passed the prophecy on to Voldemort," Lily said straight away.
Severus stiffened in his chair and didn't know what to do. Should he run away or face the consequences of his actions and ask the redhead for forgiveness?
"I don't blame you, Sev. You couldn't have known that Voldemort would be after my family."
"What do you want, Lily?" repeated the Death Eater.
He wasn't fooled and although he was happy to be with the Gryffindor again, he knew the Gryffindor had wanted to see him again for a very specific reason. That she certainly expected something from him. Why else would she ask to see him after all these years ignoring her and treating him like a stranger when they had grown up together?
"Help me protect my son," she replied.
Severus frowned, confused.
"Help you? How can I help you?"
"You are an excellent potionist, Sev. The most talented in the UK and certainly the best in the world."
"I just graduated from my masters degree, Lily, I …"
"If you weren't the best, you wouldn't have any interest in Voldemort's eyes," the redhead cut off.
The young man did not know whether or not he should feel upset by the young mother's words. He hoped to be useful other than by brewing potions.
"I'm listening to you."
"I have no illusions about my survival in this coming war," she said with a sad smile. "I'm going to die, I know it."
"Lily …"
"No need to try to reassure me, Sev. You and I know for a fact that Voldemort will kill me and that it's just a matter of time."
"If you take shelter, you are not afraid."
"What shelter are you talking about, Sev?" she asked him bitterly. "My family and I will not be safe anywhere. We could hide in a rat hole that he would eventually find us. No, Sev, I'm not here to ask you to hide us. I'm here because I need you to protect my son."
"That I protect your son?"
She nodded.
"You're the only person who can do it and help me."
Severus bit his lip, undecided. He was ready to do anything to help the young woman but didn't know if he could do it because although he had strong feelings for her, they belonged to two opposing camps. Just because he feared for his life didn't mean he had changed his ideals.
"And how can I help you?" he sighed.
Lily gave him a big smile that warmed his heart.
"Like I told you, there is no point in our hiding but you, Sev, you can hide for me and thus put Harry to safety. I found an ancient spell that dates from Greco-Roman antiquity. In case Voldemort came after you if he found out about our plan, you could defend yourself and Harry."
She took out an aged parchment and set it on the table, then turned it towards the potionist.
"Another mother before me, a powerful witch, did everything to protect her children from the danger that lay in wait for them and was able to put them to safety," she said excitedly. "With the help of another witch, she was able to create a spell that …"
"… who turned her children into monsters, Lily!" Severus finished dryly.
"To protect them!" she defended. "What I am asking of you in turn today."
"Do you want me to help you turn your son into a vampire?"
"Not exactly, she breathed suddenly exhausted. I discovered that there is what is called a double Petrova and that their blood is the origin of the creation of the vampire race."
Lily told him everything she had discovered about vampires as well as the Originals but also look-alikes that appeared every five hundred years. The redhead told her the story of the first double, Amara, who lived in Greco-Roman times.
"Currently, there must be a double Petrova somewhere in the world but I don't have time to find her so, I set out to find the traces of the second double of Amara who must have existed in the 500 years. And you know what, I managed to find the place where she was buried. She was human at the time of her death so I was able to extract her bones and some of her locks of hair for the ritual. They will have to suffice. And by serendipity, I was also able to track down an ancient werewolf clan that was wiped out a short time ago. This clan lived not far from Hogsmeade and their cemetery is there too. One of the clan wolves was carrying a baby within her at the time of her death. Luckily, she hadn't activated her werewolf gene. Isn't that a happy coincidence?"
"What exactly are you going to do?" the young potions master asked suspiciously.
"We can use their bones to use the same spell created by the mother of the Originals."
"Lily …"
"On the other hand, we are going to couple him to two other spells, she cut him off, presenting him two other scrolls just as old as the first one."
Severus turned pale as he read the spells the young woman wanted to perform.
"Lily, these are black magic spells!" he said in a horrified tone. "What you intend to do is unnatural!"
"I wish to save my son, Sev! How is it abnormal to want to protect your child from all danger?"
"Lily, do you realize what will become of you by combining these spells?"
"Not me, Sev."
"I do not understand. Isn't that what you wanna do? By using these three spells, your carnal envelope will be completely transformed and your very essence will be transferred into the corpse of this wolf. Just like your son will take the place of this woman's embryo. Then where will you find a vampire to allow your son to grow in your womb? Will your husband even be okay with such a thing?"
Lily shook her head sadly.
"I would have liked to do it, but I can't. It takes a wizard powerful enough to withstand the force of these three spells and I am not. If I attempted such a thing, I would kill myself and also kill Harry in the process, she explained. You are more powerful than me, Sev. As powerful as Dumbledore and the Dark Lord, but you still need to be able to believe in yourself. I believe in you."
"What?" he cried, dumbfounded. "Are you asking me to take your place?"
"Only you can do it."
"Do you realize what you are asking me? You want to turn me into a woman, Lily! As a woman! Have you lost your mind?!" he yelled, making everyone turn back to their table.
"I'm desperate, Severus. I've only you to protect my son. If you don't help me Harry will be doomed! You owe me this after endangering the lives of my family!"
"I can't," he said, shaking his head in apologies. "I can't… not that… I can't…"
"Sev …"
"I'm sorry, Lily, but I can't."
He took his jacket and dared to meet, for the first time since their meeting, the eyes of the redhead. He noticed the tears filling his eyes and wanted to comply with her request but it was beyond his means. Even for her, he was not ready to make such a sacrifice.
"Sorry," he whispered before hurrying out of the bar where she had arranged to meet him.
He was gone without looking back and a few days later Lily was perishing from the Dark Lord's wand, leaving behind a son. Contrary to popular belief, he knew that the young woman had to use ancient and unknown spells to ensure the survival of her son. She wasn't the kind of woman to give up and had certainly done everything to protect Potter.
Today, his sacrifice would have no value if he let Dumbledore carry out his plan. He could keep Lily's child safe, but he still had to be able to accept the sacrifice.
He circled around his devastated living room like a caged lion. Potter was going to die if he didn't do anything and unfortunately he had only one solution within his grasp to protect the kid.
"You must be laughing at me today, Lily. All those years of believing I was protecting him while I simply served Albus' heinous purposes, he spat in disgust."
He took a deep breath and remembered the redhead's smiling face. He was responsible for her passing and it was the least thing to redeem himself from her as best he could.
He left his rooms and walked towards the tower of the Gryffindor house. He didn't have much time to waste. If he wanted to act, he had to do it quickly and without further delay. He was sure he was going to regret this decision especially since he needed the Know-It-All but in memory of Lily, he would put his pride in the back of his pocket to ask for help from her student.
