She should have said something to Voight the second she knew Jay was hanging out with Angela. It all seemed pointless now in the overall scheme of things.
"Stay with me Jay!" Hailey yelled, the panic in her voice luring the rest of the intelligence unit to the barren basement. She vaguely remembers Voight telling the ambos to "hurry the hell up" but it's still a bit foggy. Her hands were on his chest, ever so close, too close to his heart, holding the blood inside. "Help's coming just stay with me, you're going to be just fine!" She told him, his eyes fluttering at the sound of her voice.
"Come on kid." Voight said, placing a closed fist on Jay's sternum and rubbing up and down. Jay flinched, his eyes blinking back open when he felt the pressure. A soft moan echoed out of his lips as he squirmed away from Voight.
The paramedics seemed to arrive pretty quickly and almost immediately pushed Hank out of the way.
"Let's get some pressure on the gsw and put a mask on him!" The senior paramedic announced, her hand already using some gauze to stanch the blood flowing freely from Jay's shoulder. Jay squeaked when he felt the paramedic touch the painful open wound. "What's his name?" She asked, her gaze moving from her patient to meet Hailey's tearfilled eyes.
"Jay..."It came out in a whisper, her voice cracking as she looked down to her partner who was huffing in pain. "... his name is Jay." She managed to croak out, a tremble still there.
"Hi Jay..." the paramedic started, her gentle hand turning Jay's face to look at her. His eyes blinked back unfocused as if trying to respond, trying to stay as alert as he could. "We've got you... just relax, alright honey." She said, her voice calm and relaxed. Hailey watched as miraculously Jay's body relaxed, his breathing now less labored, his muscles less tight.
"He's bleeding a lot! We should pack it!" The second paramedic stated, a nervous look on his face.
"He's conscious, I'm not doing that to him." The senior one said, her hands pressing harder to the wound causing more blood to flow out.
"He's bleeding faster then you and I can stop, we have to pack it!" This time a firmer voice spoke, demanding the procedure. "I'll start a line... we'll give morphine first." He told his superior, already digging through his dark red bag to find the supplies to start an IV. "Hey!" He yelled, getting Hailey's attention. "Can you roll up his sleeve, I'll need a vein." He instructed. Hailey made quick work and soon an alcohol wipe was being swiped into the inside of Jay's elbow.
His eyes became panicked as the needle came into view. Hailey all of the sudden remembered the last time Jay had to get a shot, the way he trembled before his brother gently slid the needle into his arm, Will with a concerned look on his face as Jay panted with fear. Haileys hand slid into his, her thumb gently stroking his knuckles in an effort to keep him calm.
"You're okay..." she reassured as the large bore needle was slid inside, Jay's eyes closing tightly at the intrusion. "Shh... I know." She said, using her other hand to gently stroke his hair out of his face. "All done Jay."
"Alright honey..." the paramedic said as her partner injected a clear liquid into the IV. "You're bleeding quite a bit so I need to pack this wound, I'm not going to lie it's going to hurt like hell." She told him, her hand reaching for gauze to basically stuff inside the hole. "Can you hold his arm still for me?" She asked Hailey. Hailey nodded nervously but took his hand and gave it a squeeze.
It started with a scream, muffled by the mask on his face. The paramedic roughly stuffed the hole in his shoulder. He squirmed away from the pain and heaved a couple of deep breaths into his aching lungs. "I need you to help me hold him down, he keeps moving like this he'll bleed out." The paramedic demanded, her dark eyes pleading with the rest of the people in the room to help her.
Kevin reacted the fastest, taking ahold of Jay's legs. Kim followed suit and gently took Jay's other arm, stroking up and down in an effort to keep him calm. Jay panted under the mask as the paramedic continued to pack his shoulder. He tried to break away from the strong hands holding him but it was no use. He vaguely remembers seeing Voight and Adam and hearing reassuring words being spewed out. The paramedic finally finished, after what seemed like an eternity. She moved the IV bag to rest between Jay's legs as the rest of the team helped lift him onto a stretcher.
"Hang in there Jay!" Kim said as her hand was ripped away from his arm.
Voight was yelling at people to clear a path so that Jay could be loaded onto the ambo as soon as possible. The doors rattled behind Hailey as they were slammed shut.
She took ahold of Jay's weak hand and gave it a squeeze, smiling when he returned the gesture. He drew in a desperate breath. The rasp in Jay's chest had only gotten worse, his gasping now dire.
"Pullover the rig!" The paramedic said, already digging through one of the drawers.
"What's happening?" Hailey asked, her voice shaking as she looked down at Jay.
"He has a pneumothorax! There's air getting into his chest cavity and I need to relieve the pressure!" She responded as the doors to the ambo opened, revealing the other paramedic. "I need you to needle the chest... hurry his vitals are dropping." The male paramedic jumped in, immediately cutting Jay's blood soaked shirt off. He sprayed the heaving chest with a brown liquid before digging through a different drawer to find the needle.
Jay looked panicked as the needle grew closer to his chest. However, when the paramedic raised his hand to create enough force to relieve the pressure Jay squirmed out of the way.
"Honey you have to stay still, it's going to help you breathe." Explained the older woman sitting beside him, watching that his vitals were still in a safe range.
"N...o nee...dles" he gasped, the fear in his voice matching the expression on his face.
"Jay come on, we have to" Hailey pleaded, her hand moving to stroke his cheek.
"No!" He gasped.
"Alright I got him... do it!" The female paramedic said, her arms held down Jay's, keeping him as still as she could.
Hailey would never forget the scream that flew out of Jay's lips when the needle entered his chest. She would never be able to forget the squeeze he gave her hand or the look of pain, despair and betrayal written on his face as he gasped for air.
"Okay... we're done honey, we'll get you to the hospital now, take some slow, deep breaths for me." She tried to reassure but Jay's eyes were still trained on Hailey.
The doors shut once again and the deafening sound of the ambos siren sounded out. Hailey was telling a story, trying to keep Jay distracted. Really she was just mindlessly talking, praying that Jay would just hold on for a little bit longer.
"Alright let's unload!" The woman said as the doors of the ambo were ripped open, revealing a very stressed looking Will Halstead as well as a new doctor that Hailey didn't yet recognize. "Gsw to the chest caused a collapsed lung, did a needle evacuation in the field, head trauma, and abdominal trauma. BP and heart rate have been stable the whole time." She filled the doctors in as they moved to Baghdad, where Maggie directed them.
"You're okay man." Will tried to reassure, his eyes falling to the wound on his brothers head, he placed a piece of gauze gently on top, in an attempt to stop the bleeding.
"Will... it hurts." Jay gasped, his eyes desperately looking towards his clearly stressed out brother for any form of comfort.
"I know man... we're going to get you something but for now just focus on me Alright." Will sighed and took hold of Jay's hand. He held it tightly within his own and gave it a squeeze, the deathly grip making his fingers go white. "Stay with me!" Will announced as his brothers eyes fluttered.
"I jus... want it to stop." Jay whispered.
"Can we get him some morphine?" Will asked as Natalie took hold of the stretcher, her eyes meeting with Marcel's as his hands gripped Jays shoulder firmly.
"Maggie, give him 5 mg please and get the team ready for the hybrid OR." Maggie gave him a nod and pushed the meds into Jays IV. "Will get out of here!" Crocket said, his hand shoving Will away from his gasping brother.
"I won't treat him." Will exclaims, moving back to grip Jays hand. Crockett gives Will a spiteful glare, his dark eyes competing with Will's for dominance. "Please man! At least while he's conscious."
"Fine... stay out my way."
"Let's transfer!" Marcel said. Jay groaned in pain as he felt his basically limp body being lifted off the stretcher. "Just give the meds a few minutes they'll kick in soon man." He tried to comfort as Jay squirmed away from his gentle hands. "Maggie I need a temp and new set of vitals please."
"On it." She responded, her hand giving Will's a squeeze as she swiped a thermometer across Jays temple. "He's pretty warm. 102.2" she told him, moving to place a blood pressure cuff on Jays good arm. "Pressures pretty low!" Maggie alerted them, her hand rubbing against Jays sternum in an effort to rouse him.
"Let's get these clothes off!" Crocket yelled as a flurry of activity began. Jay could feel metal being dragged along his skin as his clothes were cut off. He shivered as the cold hospital air hit his exposed skin. Jays eyes opened to find himself now completely exposed, he looked up at Will, who was placing a butterfly strip on his face, his eyes pleading with him.
"Just until we clear you, you'll get a gown soon." Will reassured when he saw Jay's baby blues staring up at him.
"Jay!" Marcel greeted as he faced Jay. "Do you think you can wiggle you toes for me?" He asked, looking down to Jay's feet. Will sighed when he saw them move. "Good. Can you feel this?" Crocket asked, as his hands travelled up Jays legs, stopping at his hips." Jay nodded, looking back up at Will.
"Doing good man, almost done I promise." He encouraged as he saw Jays eyes welling with tears.
"Let's get a femoral real quick." Marcel added, nodding at Maggie. She made quick work of it and got the supplies ready while crocket moved up Jays body. "Okay I'm going to press on your stomach, I need you to tell me if it hurts at all."
Jay gasped when he felt Marcel touch a particularly tender spot, he remembered the boots hitting his stomach and flinched away.
"Here?" Crocket asked, pressing against his lower abdomen again causing Jay to jump.
"Will." Jay complained, his watery eyes turning a bright red as the tears built up.
"I know man... just a little longer." Will tried to comfort, sending a warning glance at his coworker. "You're going to feel a pinch in your leg, hold still." Will told him as he watched Maggie waiting with the large needle.
"No needles!" Jay practically screamed, his voice dry and shaky.
"It's going to be super quick, focus on me." Will told him. Jay felt Maggie touch his leg and shifted away from her, pulling his knee up to protect his inner thigh. Her hands were gentle but firm as she pulled his leg straight again.
"No... Will please."
Will could feel his heart breaking as the tears in his brothers eyes finally spilled over. Will gently wiped them away with the back of his hand.
"It's going to be so quick sweetheart, just one big poke and it's done." Maggie said as she lined the needle up. As soon as Jay felt the sharp pain in his groin both of his knees flew up. He felt more hands on him instantly and tried desperately to shift from the rough hold. He felt the sharp pain again and cried out as Will moved to grab his hand. "That's it... all done." Maggie stated, stroking his knee.
"I'm seeing some free fluid in his lower abdomen! Let's get him on his side." Marcel said as he handed an ultrasound wand off to a nurse. The groan that escaped Jays lips as he was being rolled over was low and groggy. "Can I get some lube please?" Crocket asked as the nurses helped shift Jays position.
"What's happening?" Jay asked, his eyes lazily blinking as he felt Will grab his blood covered arm.
"Don't move, it's going to be quick I promise." Will told him, watching the panic immediately overtake his tired eyes.
"I don't want another one!" Jay cried, his head trying to turn to see what was about to be done to him.
"No more needles man I promise." Will told him as he placed a reassuring hand on Jays temple. Jay looked confused and tried to lay on his back again as the pressure in his shoulder and chest grew intolerable. "Stay still for a sec." Will instructed as one of the nurses moved Jay again. "You're going to feel a finger go in, just for a second to make sure there's no damage inside."
"Will... no." Jay tried to argue as he moved again.
"Really quick man." Will told him, his eyes pleading with Marcel to get on with it.
"Bit of pressure Jay." Crocket said. Jays back arched away from the intrusion, his eyes brimming with new tears. Jay tried to shift his head so he could see what was happening but failed when Will pulled his face to face him.
"Look at me." Will told him with a hand on Jay's cheek. "It's almost over."
"All done." Crocket said as Jay felt his finger slip out. "No blood, looks good." He announced to the room as they gently helped him roll back down. Maggie laid a sheet over Jays hips and he sighed happily as he was finally covered back up. "Let's take a look at the shoulder with the ultrasound." Crocket said as the wand was thrown into his hand and the jelly was squirted onto Jays shoulder.
"This is going to hurt." Will told him before the wand was shoved onto the broken skin. Will winced at the scream that flew out of his brothers lips as Crocket moved the device around. "I know man, squeeze my hand." He said as Jays eyes shut closed, his teeth grating together to avoid screaming. "Let it out man." Will told him, instantly regretting it as another scream echoed throughout the room.
"Sorry bud." Crocket said. "Artery looks pretty bad, going to need an OR to fix it up." He told Will.
Will sighed and nodded watching as Jays eye began to slip closed.
"Come Jay, open your eyes" Will pleaded, his hand brushing through Jays matted and bloody hair. He noticed the blue orbs flutter and smiled down at his brother, an alarm going off behind him. "Listen man... we need to take you to surgery. We're going to knock you out and intubate." Jay weakly nodded his head in response. He watched Maggie injecting something as gently as she could into Jays IV. Jay once again weakly nodded, his eyes falling closed as he began to gasp.
"Alright he's out. Maggie the tube." Marcel requested. Maggie firmly places the tube into Crockett's waiting hand. He looks up at Will nervously, glancing for only a second before focusing on his patient and expertly shoving the long plastic tube down Jay's throat. "Will we gotta go now." Marcel told him, a hand slapping Will's shoulder as the rails of the bed were lifted and Jay was wheeled out of him sight.
Will stood there for several minutes completely unable to move. He felt a hand on his shoulder and allowed the person attached to guide him from the room and into the doctors lounge.
"Why don't you get cleaned up?" He heard Natalie ask him. "Start washing your hands I'll get you a change of clothes." She concluded, pulling him towards the sink. Will turned the handles of the tap so that the water began to steam, placing his hands in he began to scrub, the bright red blood on his hands being replaced by a burning sensation as he scrubbed mercilessly.
"Hey." He heard from behind him. Will felt Maggie's gentle hands grab his wrists, pulling them from the scalding liquid. "That's enough." She said softly, a towel wrapping around his burning knuckles. Natalie returned with a new set of scrubs, these ones spotless and not covered in blood.
"Come on." Natalie gestured, her left arm placing itself between Will's shoulder blades and guiding him to the couch that sat in the corner of the doctors lounge. She sat him down and slowly pulled his scrub top off. Will's eyes were fixed in their position, staring blankly in front of him as he felt him body being moved. Natalie guided him into the new set of scrubs slowly and gently, his body moving robotically with her movements. "He's going to be okay, you know that right." She told him as she moved to sit beside his still frame, a hand on his back.
"He was bleeding so much, it was in his chest, his belly what if... what..."
"You can't think like that. Jay is so strong and way to stubborn. He's going to pull through this."
"He's all I've got left." Will whispered as the tears in his eyes finally spilled over.
"Which is why you have to believe that he's going to be okay." Natalie told him, stroking his arm gently and using her thumbs to stroke the tears from his cheeks.
"I'm going to go update his team, you stay here and I'll be right back." Will nodded and watched her straighten herself out.
"Wait." He said, his voice much stronger now. "I'll update them."
"You sure?" She asked.
"Could you go up with him, text me if anything changes?"
"Of course."
"He better be okay... he's lost a lot of blood." Will sighed sadly, looking down at his still slightly blood stained hands.
"Jay's stubborn, like his brother, he's going to be fine."
"I'm not stubborn."
"Go update the team, I'll text you if anything happens."
"Thanks Nat."
"Always."
