I got this idea from a tweet I saw the other day.
Okay, May: you got this. Don't mess up.
May looked down at the box of chocolates in her hand and, for what felt like the millionth time, ran her hand over the name that sparkled on the front: the name of her crush. She looked up and saw that he, Ash Ketchum, was sitting just a few feet away, chatting with Gary and Paul about new strategies for battle. Their backpacks were lying on the ground next to them. They were in the Petalburg City park where Ash and May came when they first arrived in town years ago at the beginning of their journey together. May took a deep breath, hid the box behind her back, and began to approach the boys. She soon found herself standing right next to them, although since Ash's back was to her, he didn't notice, especially since he was engrossed in their conversation.
"Hey, Ash," Paul said, "behind you."
"Hm?" Ash said, glancing behind him to see what Paul meant. "Oh!" he exclaimed when he saw her. "Hey May!"
"Hey Ash!" she grinned.
"What brings you out here?" he asked. "I thought you were gonna train with Dawn at the gym for your next contest."
"Eh, she was a no-show," May rolled her eyes. "Besides, I had something else to do."
"Oh yeah?" he smirked. "You mean shopping?"
"No, actually," she smirked back. "I...actually wanted to give you something."
"Huh?" he blinked. Gary and Paul looked over at her, curious to see what she was about to do.
May took another deep breath and, before she could lose her nerve, pulled the box of chocolates out from behind her back and handed them to Ash. "Here, this is for you," she said.
Ash blinked in surprise, taking the box from her and looking at the lid. "A box of chocolates?" he wondered. "Shaped like a heart? It's even got my name on it!" he smiled.
"Yeah," she said. "See, the thing is, I...I like you, Ash. Like, I really like you. And not like, as a friend, but...like-like, as in...well, for lack of a better word...love." She whispered that last word, her hands behind her back again. There. I've done my part. Now just to see if he feels the same.
"You...like me?" Ash blinked, taken aback.
"Y-Yeah," May said, glancing away as she blushed. Whatever she was expecting to happen, she didn't expect Ash to start snickering. He put his hand over his mouth and started to laugh louder, until he couldn't control himself and started laughing uncontrollably. Gary joined, having an even harder time controlling himself, and even Paul couldn't help but chuckle out loud. "What's so funny?" May asked, confused. Is this a joke to them? It's not like Ash to react this way when I pour my heart out to him.
"Wow," Ash said, getting the last of his chuckles out. "I mean, wow...that's…"
"It's what?" May asked, putting her hands on her hips and glaring at him.
"It's, uh…" he started to say, but he found himself at a loss for words. So he set down the box she gave him before pulling up his backpack and looking through it. May raised an eyebrow, wondering what he was doing. "Aha! Here it is!" He stood up and handed her something. She looked down and gasped.
It was a box of chocolates with her name on it.
"I like you too, May," he smiled warmly at her. "Like, I really like you."
"Really?" May breathed as she took the box and gazed into his eyes.
"Really."
May laughed in delight and lunged forward, throwing her arms around him. He reciprocated, and even picked her up and spun her around. She laughed even more, and he joined her as he put her down and embraced her.
"Ah," Gary smiled as he watched the new couple. "Love makes the world go around, wouldn't you agree, Paul?"
"Don't embarrass me, Gary," Paul rolled his eyes, though he couldn't help but smirk at seeing the happy couple.
They decided to continue their conversation on their own, knowing that Ash wasn't gonna come back any time soon. Meanwhile, Ash and May went over to a bench not far off, where they sat down and started eating the chocolates they bought each other. Their boxes were right in between them, so they idly picked pieces out as they sat there, silently enjoying each other's company while watching everyone else at the park. Being the big eaters that they were, it wasn't long before there was only one piece of chocolate left. They both reached for it, but instead of grabbing the chocolate, they ended up grabbing each other's hand instead. They snapped out of their idle state of mind and looked down, seeing their hands grasping each other, before looking up with a small blush. After a moment, they just smiled and, after moving the boxes out of the way, sat next to each other. May rested her hand on Ash's shoulder, while he put an arm around her shoulder. As she rested on his shoulder, she leaned up and kissed him on the cheek. He blinked and looked down at her. They smiled again and spent the rest of the afternoon sitting there, oblivious to everything else around them.
Love was a sweet but funny thing, they both thought, and they wouldn't have it any other way.
