Story Prompt: With dirty wings and a broken halo, where does an angel fall?

All of the spectators were silent as they stared wide-eyed at the huge monitor of the stadium. Amidst the plethora of dumbfounded reactions, Kurama stood frozen in place, deafened by the tumultuous heartbeat that filled his ears while drowning at the sight of the spectacle on the screen.

It can't be...

"I - Is that really..."

Yusuke's stammering was filtered out of his thoughts just when the remainders of the porcelain okame mask fell away from one of the competitors.

At this, Kurama whirled his head to throw an accusatory look but was nonplussed at seeing Koenma who had the same stupefied expression, standing on the top row of the bleachers with Jorge gawking at his side. He snapped his attention forward when a mixture of aggravated outcries and lecherous whistles boomed from the overzealous audience coupled by the reluctant voice of Koto, who reached for a piece of paper from one of the tournament staff prior to delivering an announcement in order to appease the demon crowd.

"The management may need to deliberate, folks. Apparently, the other contestant is known to be a Spirit World entity therefore isn't allowed to compete in this tournament – "

Her announcement was cut short with a pained yelp while the speakers gave off a screeching sound at the sudden burst of demon energy, the hostile atmosphere dissipated just as a red aura surrounded the form of Mukuro's opponent, effectively dismissing the fallacious announcement.

"You've got to be shitting me..." Yusuke come out with, uncompromisingly forthright while beads of sweat formed on his temples as the terrifying emanation brought chills to his blood.

Hiei's arm strained in its tight constraint, fisting his palms at the trepidation brought about by the sudden and unpleasant twist of events. Mukuro is no doubt powerful, but the energy coming from whom he considered close to an ally wasn't just pure power but of something else. Crimson orbs briefly spared a glance towards the subtle sound of teeth grinding, furrowing his brows at the futile strive as Kurama attempted to hide his agitation with a noticeable tensed jaw.

"You've fallen..." Mukuro propounded with indifference, noting how the shadows from the nearby forest seems to slowly creep towards the stage, flicking an expectant gaze at her opponent when the visible energy dissipates into a low hum as it receded from view. "I wonder how far you've gone to be this broken..."

"Simple... While a demon like you seek for your idea of peace... I crave for chaos..."

The cybernetic lens gave off a sharp gleam when the demoness narrowed her lone eye at the provocative statement. Mukuro then lifted a hand as a burst of multi-colored orbs flew towards her opponent, veering a little ways to the side before a longitudinal line appeared at the intended spot, effectively cutting through space and time. "Do you know what separates an inborn demon from a wannabe like you?..." She started before gesturing a couple more slices on her right hand. "It is our resilience in withstanding the cruel hands of fate, adapting to it and making its ruthlessness our own... You should've remained pampered in your realm rather than bide in a world which you do not belong – "

"Do you know what separates me from you?..."

Mukuro's good eye rivaled the expanse of her artificial one when the slithering darkness went through all the cracks of the dimensional cuts that she made, effectively nullifying its environmental effects. Her nucleus pulsed uncontrollably as the mixture of terror and morbid excitement coursed through her veins while bracing herself in an opposing stance just as the sober words of her opponent rang in her ears, igniting her battle instincts.

"I will win this fight, while you... die..."

Not a moment's passed after the utterance, they sprung on their feet as they charged at each other at lightning speed and on the precise moment that they were about to meet, both of them warped as they vanished into thin air, reappearing seconds after with Mukuro's mangled body laying on the floor. Her superficial limbs torn from her body as blood oozed out of its sockets, face contorted to one of shock and pain while staring dazedly at the figure standing in front of her.

Amethysts eyes trailed apathetically onto her doing, flickering at her ichor coated hands before she turned upon perceiving her opponent at the point of death, stalking towards her discarded articles on the ground, snapping her dark cloak in place before donning the broken remains of the porcelain mask.

"He... truly felt...towards you..."

A soft sigh resounded in the sullen atmosphere before the woman half-turned to address the demoness whose threading between life and death, voice rough with blood dripping from her mouth. Apparently, the bionic woman managed to get a glimpse of her thoughts during their brief contact.

"You..." Mukuro audibly gulped when her throat constricted with a lump of thickened blood. "...should've... trusted him...more..." She finished while battling with unconsciousness, eyes softening as the coldness of purple persisted on such an angelic face.

She uncontrollably coughed out blood as the haunting sway of long, braided cerulean tresses became her last vision, followed by the desperate call that permeated her fading auditory senses. The sense of distress lacing the overfamiliar voice brought a wraith of comfort as her muscled slackened, embracing her fate, but not before transmitting a telephatic message to the fire demon as she fully succumbed to the unyielding call of darkness.

The shadows conceal the truth. Do not be fooled...

A/N:

The thought came to me while writing Quietus...paused for a little bit to type this thing before it slipped off my mind. A long writing prompt perhaps? Who knows...

I suddenly have this unwavering impression of a battle-worthy Botan. Super AU, I know...but I have tons and tons of plot on how to make such an innocent little grim reaper turn into a badass. Planning on publishing it all IF I happen to write them all LOL...

What do you think? Apologies for asking this. I derive my inspiration from how my readers predict or imbibe my stories :3

Thanks for reading!

Oh... Guess what??? Got tested today and came out NEGATIVE!!!
