Braking point
Chapter 1
Breathe in.
Breath out.
FOCUS.
He takes a deep breath. Consuming the smell of rubber, the smell of exhaust, listening to the roaring V6 - 3.4 litre single turbo charged Mecachrome engines, listening to the fans from across the track, screaming in excitement, blowing whistles. Oh yeah, it is time to shine today. He is just one step closer to accomplishing his childhood dream. To become a Formula 1 driver.
He opens his eyes and sees the fans going wild. The anxiety in his is rising, but that's normal. It happens every race and not just to him. He knows the other drivers can feel it too. He looks down at admires the beauty he was driving this whole season. His number 18 Carlin car. The shinning blue with the yellow and white, under the Abu Dhabi lights, a gorgeous looking machine.
"You ready, kid?"
He turns to his left to see his engineer, Mark, looking at him with a smile on his face. He looks down at him red and black helmet, seeing his reflection on the visor. This is his chance.
"Born ready." He replies. Mark nods and he goes to the car.
"Alright, boys! Let's get this monster ready." Mark says to the mechanics standing next to the car. They get to work, picking up the tires from the ground, and putting them on the car.
TRACK ANNOUNCER: This is one of the most exciting championship battles in Formula 2 history! Who will come out on top? Billy Colton leads the world championship going into the last race with 243 points, followed closely by George Russell who has the same amount of points as Angus MacGyver with 239 points, then comes MacGyver's teammate, Lando Norris with 235 points, and lastly Alexander Albon with 229 points. Any of these young drivers can be crowned the Formula 2 world champion today. The starting grid is: Billy Colton lines up on pole position with Angus MacGyver along side him in 2nd place. George Russell is on the second row in 4th place, with Lando Norris right behind him in 5th. Albon didn't have such a good feature race yesterday, so he lines up in 14th. Can he make the comeback he needs to win the world title? It will be hard, but not impossible.
Mac looks at the ART car that's sitting on pole position. There he was. Billy Colton. The man Mac has beef with since Formula 4. They are from the same place, Los Angeles. One crash between them was all it took for them to go at it on and off the track. Mac has two goals today. To win the world title and to beat Billy. Mac puts on his helmet without taking his eyes off Billy. Everybody knows about their rivalry. Social media is full of it. Especially Twitter. It was time to show the people around the world who the better driver is.
Mac steps in the car and gets comfortable. He takes the hose from the water bottle that's in the car and from under the helmet, and entered inside and brings it near his mouth. He presses the on and off button on the wheel, and on the dashboard pops up the Carlin logo.
"Alright, kid. Let's hear it roar!" Mark says as he kneels next to Mac. Mac presses the button that's next to his legs, and the car comes to life. Mac puts it in neutral, presses on the gas and hears the engine scream. "Good luck, Mac." Mark says as he shakes his hand with Mac. Mac winks at him and smiles under the helmet.
The mechanics slowly set the car down and they all step on the side of the track. Mac looks at his side mirrors, seeing the cars behind him. Formula 2 is all about talent. Equal cars, which means same speed, same downforce, same engine, same specs. It was all up to the drivers in this championship. How brave they are, how focused and talented they are.
"Radio check." He hears his radio engineer, David, say through the radio. Mac presses the radio button on the steering wheel.
"Loud and clear." He replies.
"Alright, Mac, 3 minutes till the formation lap. You have 45 minutes to give it everything you got. Good luck and see you in parc ferme." David says.
"Thank you, David." Mac replies. 'You can do this. Just focus. Nail the start and push.' Mac says to himself. He puts it in 1st gear and holds the clutch as he sees one red light. When the light goes out, he releases the clutch. He gives a nice wheelspin to heat up the rear tires. He follows Billy through turn 1 but keeps a distance between them.
"Alright, Mac, you know the drill. Heat up the tires, get a good start, and push from there. Tires should last the whole race. This is your day. Show them what you're made off. Enjoy the race." David says through the radio.
Mac enters the first straight. He puts the pedal to the metal to test the speed of the car. He wives around to heat up the tires as he reaching 290 kph. He brakes hard for the corner to heat up the breaks as well. Billy and Mac enter the start finish straight and the cars behind them follow. Mac does a wheelspin, leaving tire marks behind him, trying to heat the rear tires more cause they are a huge factor when it comes to the race starts. Mac lines up in his grid slot and puts the car in neutral. He looks over at Billy and this is caught on live television.
ALEX JACQUIES: There's Angus MacGyver. Looking over at his rival Billy Colton. This is one of the most intense rivalries I have ever seen.
DAVIDE VALSECCHI: It really is. MacGyver is giving a "I'm gonna get you" look, isn't he? Let's see who comes out on top today. Who is your money on? Angus MacGyver or Billy Colton?
Mac looks away from Billy as the last car lines up on the grid. He looks in his mirrors and sees the marshal waving the green flag at the back. Mac puts it in 1st gear and holds the clutch. It's time.
ALEX JACQUISE: The lights are coming on now. We have one, two, three, four, five lights!
The lights go out and Mac releases the clutch.
ALEX JACQUISE: And the light are off! Away we go for the final race of the 2018 Formula 2 world championship!
