Blasting through the fields of West Side Island, in Emerald Hill Zone, was a blue hedgehog. This hedgehog wasn't ordinary by any means. He was born with a gift. The gift of speed. There was no one faster than he was. This was Sonic the Hedgehog. His cobalt fur had fluctuated as the wind attacked it. His emerald green eyes looked on with determination as he patterned his feet to the ground rapidly. He had been wearing white gloves. He also rocked red shoes that had white straps, with a golden buckle accompanying them.
He had been on his way to visit his best buddy, Tails. He was a two tailed kitsune with yellow-orange fur. He had a patch of white fur protecting his mouth, and another patch over his chest. His two Tails sprawled out with the tips of them being white as well. He had white gloves, slightly different from Sonic's. He also wore shoes that had been white in the front, with red in the back, coming around the heels of his feet. His eyes were baby blue and he had three yellow-orange strands of fur sticking out from his forehead. Tails had just finished adding a little tune-up to his plane, the X-Tornado. It used to belong to Sonic the Hedgehog, but shortly after meeting Tails, he realized it was much more useful in the hands of the young kitsune. To test his plane, he wanted to utilize a Chaos Emerald for maximum efficiency.
But they hadn't seen the emeralds in a month since Sonic's big battle with Doctor Eggman in Emerald Town. About a week later there was an explosion at the power plant. Everyone that was there was declared dead, which was less than forty individuals. Sonic and Tails helped clean things up, as they wanted to help in anyway they could. They even visited a family or two to see if they could do anything.
Almost to Emerald Town, Sonic planted his right heel into the ground, bringing himself to an abrupt stop. He looked out to a field of colorful grass and beautiful flowers. There were plentiful flickies and the calm breeze swayed the leaves in the trees. It was a somewhat hilly area, and Sonic stood atop one of the more elevated hills. You could see the shore connecting to the ocean in the far distance. The skies were a light blue, with puffy clouds decorating them by littering across the horizon. The sun shone bright up above, creating some nice areas of shade under the trees.
Taking a moment to appreciate the scene before him, Sonic hummed happily. Whether he loved adventures or not, there was no denying that Sonic loved nature as well. These fields were one of Sonic's favorite reasons to travel to West Side Island. It made traveling over a continent and two oceans worth it sometimes. Though, Sonic wasn't exactly sure he'd say that he lives on South Island, anymore. He was always traveling!
That's when Sonic remembered why he came to the island in the first place. He looked to his left, and saw Emerald Town in the very far distance. He leaned forward, and planted his hands to the ground. He propped his left leg to bring his foot to a tiptoe, and pushed his right leg far back. After his feet were planted to the ground, Sonic practically disappeared, a blue blur and a gust of wind now taking his place.
Meanwhile, in Emerald Town, Tails was tinkering with the X-Tornado in his garage, which was right next to his home. Suddenly, a gust of wind filled his garage, causing papers to fly everywhere, and he jumped, before falling on his rear end.
He groaned and stood up to face the hedgehog that now stood before him. "Sonic, you should really knock one of these days!", the kitsune complained.
"Sorry, little dude!", the blue blur started. "I just get a little excited sometimes. Anyways, I did a scan of the island.", he continued, before reaching to pull something out. "Voila!", he smiled, holding out a red gem in his gloved hand. It had a glow to it at times, but right now was not one of those times.
Tails smiled with his teeth. "Sonic, you got a Chaos Emerald!", he exclaimed as he happily accepted it from speed demon. "Now I can actually test the new defense system I put into the Tornado!"
"You know it!", the hedgehog replied back, before walking around with his hands behind his head. "Hey- what happened to relocating to that old warehouse of yours in the outskirts of town? I'm sure your neighbors would appreciate it if you took that loud start up elsewhere.", he quipped.
"Yeah- haha. I just keep forgetting, plus I've been so busy lately that I haven't had the time!", he explained. He set the red Chaos Emerald down, and started picking up the papers that currently littered the garage, thanks to Sonic. The blue blur joined him in cleaning up.
"You shouldn't have to worry about time when the fastest thing alive is your best friend!", Sonic advised. This earned a chuckle from Tails, and he finished picking up his set of papers, thanks to Sonic's assistance. They were blueprints, and whatnot.
"Well what do you say we go to the fields and test the Tornado?", he suggested. This earned a look of disapproval from Sonic. He loved the fields! He wouldn't want to cause them destruction! Tails smiled a bit, and corrected himself. "I mean the fields by Chemical Plant, Sonic."
"Oh, yeah! Let's do it!", he immediately agreed. "I'll race you there. Give you a headstart!", he challenged.
Tails nodded, as he put the emerald in a compartment box next to his pilot's seat. "You've got yourself a deal!", he accepted, as he got into the pilot's seat, starting his plane up. Within seconds, it had been propelling through the air at incredible speeds.
Sonic put one hand on his hip, and looked at his other as if he was checking the time, while tapping his foot to the ground. A bear was walking along the sidewalk, as if leaving for work. He noticed Sonic and a smile perked on his face. The gaze of his round eyes locked onto the azure hedgehog, and he waved. "Hey, Sonic!"
Sonic focused his eyes on the bear, before offering him a flashy smile that showed off his teeth. The blue blur assumed this bear to be a neighbor of Tails. He offered his trademark thumb up, before greeting the bear back. "Heya!"
"What brings you back into town?", the bear asked.
"Ah, not much! Just here to help my buddy. Speaking of which, I'm racing him right now!", he explained.
"Why aren't you running?", the bear questioned, bringing a finger to his own chin.
"Giving him a headstart. Speaking of which.. I gotta catch up! Cya!", he waved, before speeding off. He left a blue blur behind, and a gust if wind.
The bear watched in amazement. "Wow. He really is fast!", he told himself, before continuing with what he was doing before.
East of Emerald Town, flying over the central plains of West Side Island, was Tails in his X-Tornado. He had made some good headway. Below him were vast amounts of lush, green and checkered grass. The wind had been blowing the fur strands sticking out from his forehead, and he had a look of determination and competition on his face. He wanted to see how his plane would fair off against Sonic.
Not too far behind, the hedgehog wasn't doing too bad himself. He had a huge grin on his face. It was as if he was embracing the wind that attacked his face. The smile only grew when he saw a loop-the-loop in the distance. He picked up the pace, and the blue trail following him became more opaque. He zoomed through the loop, and passed Tails with ease.
When the kitsune saw this, he could only chuckle. "That's Sonic for you!", he told himself, in enjoyment.
Just outside of Chemical Plant, the blue blur tapped his foot repeatedly, waiting for Tails to land. When he finally did, Sonic didn't hesitate to taunt him. "What took ya so long!?"
Tails got out of his plane and landed on the ground, the grass being less colorful, and more dull. "Very funny, Sonic. Now, why don't we test the new defense systems?"
"How's this one new, anyways? I thought the last one you had was pretty cool.", Sonic shrugged.
"You say a lot of the stuff I build is cool.", Tails retaliated.
"Am I supposed to lie!?", the hedgehog asked, putting on a dramatic face.
"This system will create a one-way force field. There's getting out, but there's no getting in.", Tails explained.
"That would be an issue if you accidentally stepped out.", Sonic commented.
"I'm working on a system that can let people in depending on who or what is trying to enter. The emerald is going to give the X-Tornado the energy it needs for a sufficient test. That being said-"
"You want me to see if I can break through it, right?", the hero cut in. "No problem buddy, let's get to it!"
Tails nodded, and got into the X-Tornado. He looked to Sonic. "Another thing. The more emeralds it has, the more powerful it will be."
"So get all seven and you're set!", Sonic added.
"Well, I'm not sure the Tornado can handle that kind of power output yet. Which is why I'm testing the integrity of a force field with one emerald for now.", he said, before clearing his throat. "You ready?", the two-tailed kitsune asked. The blue blur nodded, and Tails started the plane. It began flying around in circles. Sonic noticed a reddish-yellow, clear, forcefield form around it. He crouched down, and began charging a spindash. Tails stayed low so Sonic could hit the forcefield.
Wind kicked up around the hedgehog, before he finally kicked off at an amazing speed. He hit the force field, and electricity sparked. After a bit of resistance, Sonic was sent flying to the ground. He let out groans of pain as he bounced back, before rebounding himself. He immediately ran circles, picking up some speed. "Time to pick up the pace!", he shouted to himself, as he charged for the X-Tornado again. He leapt off of the ground, and shot right into the force field. There was another large spark of electricity when he collided with it. He was blown back once more, and laughed. "Alright! Time for a real test!", he declared, before zooming off in another direction.
"Sonic wait-!", Tails shouted for him. But Sonic was already out of earshot. The kitsune feared that if Sonic went too fast, he wouldn't only pierce the forcefield, but potentially go through the X-Tornado!
Sonic stopped himself, and turned back around. He leaned down, and propped his hands to the ground, a wide grin on his face. He began to rev up his feet, creating a cloud of dust behind him, as well as kicking loose grass around. He exploded through a sonic boom, a bright blue aura surrounding and trailing behind him.
Tails immediately Sonic come into sight, and he hadn't the time to react. No way he could get out of the way in time! Tails flinched and squeezed his eyes shut, fearing for what might happen to him, and the plane. The force field shattered as Sonic pierced it, creating a loud boom.
Tails opened his eyes after a few seconds and noticed he was still flying in the plane. Standing on the wing, was Sonic. He had been flaunting his teeth with a cock smile, and he was looking down to the kitsune. "C'mon, Tails! You didn't think I was gonna blow up the Tornado, did ya?", he quipped at the younger hero.
Tails found himself laughing nervously, and nodding at Sonic. He then diverted his gaze to right in front of him. He pulled them up higher into the air.
Meanwhile, on Angel Island . . .
"Get your hands off of the Master Emerald!", screamed a red-furred echidna. He had white gloves with spike-like knuckles on his hands. He had a white crescent-shaped patch on his chest. He wore red shoes, with yellow straps, and a gray buckle on top of them. His eyes had been purple and his posture was fierce!
The echidna jumped towards a flying pod, harboring a man. He had been egg-shaped. He was over seven feet tall. He wore blue glasses and had a pink nose. He had a large mustache extending beyond his face. He wore a black jumpsuit under a lab coat, and wore white gloves. His jumpsuit had a white strap going down the middle, with four white straps on either side with yellow buckles at the end of them. His pod had extended a wire, complimented by a claw, to a large, green gem. It had a shape similar to a Chaos Emerald. It had been green, unlike the red one Sonic and Tails had in their possession.
"Oh, Knuckles!", the man started. "Can't you just let me borrow a tad bit of energy? It's just for a side-project!", he finished.
"I know you better than that to know that you're up to no good, Eggman!", Knuckles shouted, as he went to punch the doctor. A clear shield came over Eggman, and Knuckles cracked it. It saved the doctor though. It had done it's job.
"You little-!", Knuckles mumbled, before turning to see the larger emerald. "What are you doing to the Master Emerald!?", he asked, before diving down to it. He gripped the claws, and tried to pull them from the Master Emerald, only to struggle.
"I wouldn't advise that, Knuckles!", Eggman warned. "You are risking a lot by trying that!", the evil scientist laughed.
"You're the idiot who tried this in the first place!", Knuckles retaliated, before gripping the wire that connected the claw to the Master Emerald. He ripped the wire, and the claw fell from the Emerald.
Eggman's face fell. "I have to get out of here!", he shouted. He pressed a button which ejected the wire from his pod entirely. Next thing Knuckles knew, he was flying off.
The Emerald Guardian showed off a triumphant grin, crossing his arms. "You better run!", he announced. But he soon learned that Eggman wasn't running from him. He turned around to see chaos energy emitting from the wires in the form of electricity. The echidna realized that it striking the Master Emerald with green lightning bolts, as if trying to restore back into the emerald. In a panic, Knuckles ran towards the emerald, ready to help put the energy back in. He knew that if the Master Emerald tried accepting the energy in it's current form, it would shatter, or worse.
It was worse.
The Master Emerald shattered, and Knuckles saw shards eject into the air. But he knew it wasn't all of the shards. Where the Master Emerald was before, there was now a purple portal. Knuckles saw a good chunk of the shards going through the portal. In a panic, Knuckles stopped there, pondering whether he search for the emerald shards here, on his world, or go to the other world first. Before he could make a decision, the portal had sucked him in. He shouted, before the portal abruptly closed.
