Closer To You

She stared at the small box in her hand,
Wondering how she could possibly stand,
For, shattered, a piece of her heart
At the sight of the sculpted art.

"Compass points you anywhere,
closer to me."
She sang softly as she breathed in the acrid air.
"Where you are, I will be..."

She opened up the box, and the needle
Of the compass spun around,
Coming to stop on the man who would wheedle,
The man who had been cut down.

Her eyes closed.
Silent tears ran down her face.
She had never felt so discomposed,
So out of her place.

She shut the compass in her clasp,
For she could no longer stand.
As she collapsed, she did no more than gasp.
The item slipped from her hand,
Right out of her grasp.
She could not pick it up on command.

Her breath came through the heaves of her chest.
"Compass points me anywhere,
Closer to you."
