Author's Notes: Hey readers and Batman/Ivy shippers. I bring to you another Pootamis special. Can't remember the reviewers that requested for this story(sorry but i hope you'll forgive me with this lol) but i am proud to bring you Ann Nocenti and John Van Fleet's comic book one shot Batman & Poison Ivy: Cast of Shadows. Many quotes have been taken out from the actual comic book while i also sprinkle in my own scenes to make this a more Batman/Ivy story for the getco. Just like in my previous story Gotham Sirens this story will be more like a movie feature with a few actors and actresses already decided for certain roles.
Bruce Wayne/Batman- Matt Bomer
Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy- Jessica Serfaty
I look forward to hearing your reviews and i hope you enjoy!
" Time for the Metro Commentary! I'm your host Vicki Vale and today we'll jump right into what has the world buzzing. Dan Trimbel, the richest man in Gotham is erecting a skyscraper so tall that his famous Gold-T logo will float over the skyline like a second sun to be seen by all, whether they like it or not. That's right folks you heard it here first. Proclaimed billionaire now looks to dip his hands into the very environmental field. A controversial subject that has quickly started to make headlines throughout Gotham City along with the self proclaimed billionaire funding the project.
As the tower pierces the sky like an antenna to god, it makes one wonder about the man who builds it. Is his reach limitless like he has claimed so many times in the past? For everyday this magnificent skyscraper rises, the shadow it casts is that much darker, wider, longer. There are those who charge that the tower represents the shadow of one man blocking out the light of many and this radio host can't help but agree. A shadow so formidable, it blots out everything in its path.
A citizens coalition led by billionaire Bruce Wayne is desperately petitioning for an injunction against the tower's inevitable rise. You heard that right folks which has this radio host itching to know. Are we about to witness a clash of the titans? This host thinks so but only time will tell.
Meanwhile as Bruce Wayne along with his lawyers push for legal action against what many have called an abomination as for the shadow this skyscraper creates? The tip of it has just passed the park, and its dark hand now threatens to reach as far as Arkham Asylum. Home for the insane. World renowned for its rotten, decrepit, inhuman conditions. The grand maddening irony of asylums: they tend to drive you insane.
Think of the patients as junkyard dogs if you slam someone in a cage and leave them to stew in their own howls for a few decades what do you think they'll be like the day you let them out?"
I like dust.
Dust is skin cells.
Dust is people.
I eat dust.
If you been in this room, I got you on my fingertips.
Rust is better.
Rust is alive.
I seen it grow.
It's all meat. Boy meets girl. Meat, she loves me not meat.
Voices echoing all around her. Voices only she can hear. Voices she can't block out no matter how hard she tries. No matter how much she concentrates on anything but them. Voices that whisper in her ear nonstop day and night. Voices she can hear so perfectly as though they are standing before her at this very given moment. Voices that leave a young woman fumming sitting silently in her cell staring down at her clenched hands with her eyes firmly closed until she can no longer take them anymore and her eyes snap open revealing nothing but these green fire filled eyes.
" Could you all please shut up and give me a moment of quiet!?"
A shout that echoes through her cell silencing them all. Silencing the voices deep into her mind. Voices that obey their mistress's command as she turns towards her newest addition to her vast collection of plants all around her cell. A plant of her own creation. The newest child born under her loving care. Her beautiful baby. A baby she makes sure is watered every single day and night. Just like she is doing now with her trusty spray bottle not missing a single vine. Not missing a single spot on her beautiful child.
" Ivy? How come you get plants? It's not a flytrap is it?"
Oh Harold. Another lost soul sent her to rot with the rest of them. Such a poor and strange little man. A soul much like herself that simply isn't understood. Simply is seen as a monster by the masses instead of the unique individuals they truly are. And his story although a bit bizarre is one that proves just that. She can remember what he had told her like it was yesterday.
When Harold was a little boy, he was very lonely, but he didn't like people. One day he swatted a fly. He saw that it was not dead, but stunned. He slipped a delicate noose over the fly and tied the thread to its body. When the fly revived, Harold found he had a pet on string. As he listened to its buzz, he knew it was a B-sharp. He began to crave a high-C,a B-flat,and a middle-G. He found a fly for each note until he had a symphony of friends. He was never lonely again, ever. What does insanity sound like if you were to ask him? His answer would be rather simple. It's a song of a thousand wings tethered by strings.
" No Harold. It's a rhizomorphic fungus with phosphorescent properties and the doctor lets me grow things because it's good therapy."
" Oh? Is it perhaps because they are from a certain Caped Crusader?"
Even so despite the rather awkward conversations she has with this man on a daily basis this was always the topic she looked most forward to. The Caped Crusader. The Batman. Oh how she has dreamed of him every single night. Dreamed of an abandoned world. Dreamed of a world with green as far as the eye can see. A world where she is its queen,it's mother and he its king and father. A world where their enemies lay dead by their feet for the taking. A world where defiance towards them and mother nature is met with nothing but a slow and painful death. Oh how she loves to dream. Loves the smiles he would send her way only for her. Love the way he would hold her like she is the most precious flower in the whole entire world. A dream that will never become a reality.
They are too different. One fighting on the light side with the other favoring the dark. One who fights for everything they believe in while another fights to keep the balance. Two lost souls that have encountered one another so many times in the past as though it was mother nature's way of bringing them together. As though it was mother nature's way of showing she has chosen a new Adam and Eve to pave the way. Oh how she knew this to be true. She has heard the voices loud and clear. Has heard the blissful sighs coming from all around once they have danced. Once they had been reunited dueling in another clash for the ages. Clashes that sometimes she wins and sometimes he wins with the end result always remaining the same. To watch the sun be taken away from her as she is thrusted back in here.
But maybe just maybe there is something there between them? Maybe just maybe there is something there to build on between them? Harold as bizarre and deranged as he is might just be onto something making her heart beat a bit faster. The very same thought that always leaves her in a blissful mood. Leaves her smiling happily at everything around her.
He loves me. He truly loves me.
A thought that has helped her get through many days here. Through many lonely nights. A forbidden love between them. A romantic and unusual kind of love only they will ever understand. Only they will ever cherish and that would be just fine with her.
" Perhaps?"
She would just leave it at that until the time comes to truly find out for herself. In the meantime she has more pressing matters to attend to. Her child's need for sunlight. Need to have the sun's mighty rays shine down upon him. Sunlight so hard to come by these days. For what reasons she was still unsure of. The calendar has not flipped over to the colder seasons as of yet. Just like on this day. A spring day that should provide plenty of sunlight for her children and yet it hasn't with no explanation in sight. No cloud in sight. No droplets of rain hitting the bars of her cell's window. Nothing but a large shadow hovering over her cell. A shadow that has started to appear more frequently these past few weeks growing bigger by the day.
" I want some therapy. I wanna pet. You got any bees in there? Fungus amungus fungus amungus."
A shadow she looks down towards now as a familiar sound echoes through her cell. The sound of buzzing. The faintest of buzzs coming from a small fly she can hear making its way around her cell. A minor nuisance making Ivy clutch her rhizomorphic fungus plant close to her chest protectively while her eyes constantly search all around for the meddlesome insect.
" I had a flea circus. Fleas and flies. You'd be surprised what you can get a fly to do. Some pretty sneaky stuff. Mine screamed like a bee. Had to shut her up. They scream, ya gotta shut em up."
" Harold, I see a fly. You've got a fly on a string."
Where oh where is the meddlesome insect? She can hear it so perfectly through her cell. That damn annoying buzzing echoing off the walls. Feel those small eyes staring at her and what is her own.
" I hear buzzing."
" I had to shut her up. She was buzzing. They buzz, ya gotta shut em up."
Her neighbor will be no help to her. His mind is already lost back in a time he called his happy place. Oh how she wished it would be so easy for her. Wished she could sometimes lose herself in her memories like Harold can be at times but she can't. No she can't stay in the past. Not when there is so much for her to do. Not when there is so much more she needs to accomplish before she too, like the most beautiful flowers must wither away and die.
" Come on Ivy, tell us about your fungus plant."
" Well….okay. Cells are just information you can splice together. The coding of different cells without any degradation of the genetic intent of each one. Encoded, decoded, recoded. I grafted the stem cells of spider's silk and an ivy vine into a phosphorescent fungus. The vine inherited the tough as steel aspects of a spider's line. The ivy's ability for rapid growth but the blossoms, the fungus my fungus was blessed with an inherited sense of light."
So beautiful. The most beautiful thing she has ever seen. A child that shines far brighter than the rest of her children. A child whose glow lights up her darkened cell.
" Oh if only you could see this, Harold! She's got a halo. A halo of light. I can feel her reaching, yearning towards the sun like a solar battery. The flowers soak up the sun and give off illumination. No need for electricity. No more polluting power companies. My fungus will create enough light for everyone!"
" It's beautiful."
Instantly recognizing the voice she is hearing coming from behind her truly not believing what she is hearing snapping around as she sees a familiar pair of eyes staring back at her from the outside of her cell not daring to look away a guarded look comes across Ivy's face. A man, she never expected to ever see within these walls. A man who she could safely say for certain must hate her guts for everything she has done to this city. Sometimes going to the far lengths as to try and destroy the very last thing his parents had left him.
" Bruce Wayne? Isn't this a pleasant surprise."
A pleasant surprise indeed and yet quite shocking. To see this man standing before her now wearing nothing but a smile across his face. An actual friendly smile then the rather forced smiles she has grown accustomed to by the fine men and women running this establishment. A smile she can't help but think it suits him rather well though if she was being honest there was another man, she hoped she would see one day smile. Hoped to one day see just a small ounce of happiness within his eyes.
" Ms Isley."
She could see now why the times call him Gotham's most eligible bachelor. If she hadn't turned to a life of crime she could very well see herself pinning for his affections along with the rest of the female population. The handsome face. The fit and muscular frame underneath the expensive suits he is always seen wearing. The shere confidence he always shows whenever he makes an appearance. Oh yes quite the specimen but he isn't for her. No, only one man is for her. The perfect man. A certain tall, dark, and mysterious man who likes to play hero every single night.
" So what do i owe this pleasure?"
The way his smile widens. She was now rather intrigued. Especially from the way he reaches into his jacket of his suit and to her confusion pulls out a small white cloth with a noticeable green stem sticking out.
" I have a gift for you from a mutual friend we share. He asked if I would give this to you personally."
He has her full attention. Mutual friend? Just who could this man be talking about? They are on different scales of society. Surely this must be a trick. Surely this must be some piss poor attempt by one of the doctors in this facility to see how she will react. Well if its a game they want then its a game they will get.
But that smile? It is not full of merith. It is not forced or being manipulated. No it is genuine. No this wasn't a trick but if it isn't a trick then just who or what had caused this billionaire to come here to visit her? A question she wished she could have answered right now. Especially from the way he slowly opens up the cloth revealing the contents inside causing her eyes to widen.
A red rose. A lone red rose with the thorns picked. A red rose that smells so fresh as though it had just been picked. A red rose with this wonderful scent causing her to slowly close the gap between them and take the rose out from his outstretched hand and bring it up to her nose. Such a wonderful scent. A scent that tells her everything she needs to know. This wasn't some flower you would find in a common flower shop. This wasn't just some flower that could be bought.
No this rose is different. This rose had been neutered out of love. Had been cared for properly unlike most plants she has come across in this city. A beautiful red rose she could smell all day with nothing but a smile. Yes whoever this mutual friend may be surely knows his way around a garden.
" And just who is this mutual friend you speak of? From your tone, I take it you think rather highly of them."
A beautiful sight. If anyone were to ever ask him that would be the answer he would give them. A beautiful flower being held so gently being sniffed by an even more beautiful woman. A breathtaking woman.
" You could say that. I would call it sharing a mutual respect for a certain brilliant woman."
Glancing away from the rose towards Bruce as she sees his trademark grin that she could guess would make most women go weak at the knees suppressing the urge to roll her eyes at his subtle attempt of flattery Ivy turns her back towards him to hide the amused smile that starts to break across her face.
" My aren't you the charmer."
Making her way across her cell to gently place the rose down in an already well watered flower vase turning her attention back towards her newest creation in her hands grazing it ever so gently with her fingers slowly Ivy brings her eyes back up slightly to look at Bruce out of the corner of her eye.
" You still haven't answered my question Mr Wayne."
" I come seeking advice."
Now she was intrigued. Far more than she was a few minutes ago when this billionaire first made an appearance outside of her cell. To seek guidance from her? Rather interesting. No one has ever asked for her opinion on anyone unless they were already under her spell. Rather interesting indeed. So much so that she can't help but look fully towards Bruce to judge his face finding no deception whatsoever. No, what she finds is rather interesting. A genuine look of concern.
" Go on. You have me rather….intrigued."
Seeing more movement out of the corner of her eye turning fully back to look at Bruce as she sees him leaving a folded up magazine leaned up against the bar's of her cell door unable to help but feel rather intrigued gently placing her rhizomorphic fungus down slowly Ivy makes her way across her cell and gently plucks the magazine off from the cell door before she unfolds the magazine.
Billionaire Dan Trimbel friend or foe of the environment?
Dan Trimbel? A name she wasn't too familiar with but now she was. This headline simply made her want to learn more. After all Mother Nature is her business. A headline she merely mentally shrugs at before she opens the magazine open and flips through it to the main article. An article she skims through briefly looking for the main details before her eyes widen and she is forced to start reading from the beginning.
Absurd! Disgusting mammal! Does he realize what he has done!
A skyscraper blocking the sun. Destroying the lands. Killing the environment. A monstrosity that must be stopped. Must be dealt with in a swift faction. Just like this man would need to be dealt with. How dare he do something like this. How dare he block out the sun from her children. How dare he try to manipulate the elements to his liking.
The sun!?
A sudden realization that makes Ivy's eyes widen as the magazine drops from her hands before with a surge of speed she rushes across her cell and looks out her cell window only for her eyes to widen in horror. Now she knew why not much sunlight was making its way into her cell. The monstrosity itself was within sight. The disgusting sight itself. A skyscraper just like everything it had been described to be. A sight that makes her pale considerably until before Bruce knows it Ivy comes barreling towards the other side of her cell and grasps the bars of her cell door in a vice grip making her knuckles turn white.
" That tower! It cut off the sun!
It cut off the sun!
A realization that makes Ivy's eyes get even wider. Make her hands loosen from the bars as she feels all the strength leaving her until to Bruce's shock she drops down to her knees as her eyes start to water.
" Miss Isley?"
They put me in this cage….
" Isley?"
They steal my life….
" Pamela?"
Now they cut off the sun….
" Pamela!?"
It's not fair. How could they do this? How could they do this to her? Being here locked inside of this cage was bad enough. Stealing her children from her during every cell check was already bad enough but now? Now they were looking to take back the lives she created. Look to take back every ounce of happiness they ever promised her. Why oh why did they have to do this to her.
" Is she crying? I hate it when they cry. They cry, ya gotta shut em up."
" Pamela?"
" Why did they block the sun? My only little window."
She knew the answer; she just didn't want to say it outloud. It was because of them. Those filthy mammals. Those power hungry savages that just take and take until there is nothing left. Where are the heroes when you need them? Where are the heroes when a true crisis occurs? An answer that is answered deep in the back of her mind when a hand reaches through the bars of her cell and gently lays down on her shoulder causing Ivy's watery eyes to lift up and stare into Bruce's concerned eyes as he kneels down to be eye level with her.
" I don't know but i'm gonna find a way to fix this. I swear to you on this but I need your help."
" Anything."
Crawling the small distance between them reaching through the bars to grasp his hands as she feels her hands being gently squeezed, Ivy looks pleadingly into Bruce's eyes before she faintly whispers out.
" What do i need to do?"
The way she looks. Never before has he seen her so vulnerable before. Never before has he seen her look so desperate. A look inside that angers him greatly. Never should this woman look like this. Never should this woman look so vulnerable and he wished he could give her the answer. He wished he could say everything was gonna be alright but he can't. He doesn't have the answer.
" I don't know how to fight this. I'm out of my element here. I've already petitioned for an injunction against this creation but beyond that, I don't know what to do. Tell me what do i need to do to stop this runaway train before it reaches the end of the tracks?"
Speechless. There was no other way she knew how to describe how she is feeling right now. The way her heart skips a beat. No one has ever stood up for the very things that she believes in before. Never before has she heard someone other than herself speak so passionately about the very things she fights for. This passion that makes Ivy stare wide eyed at Bruce as she feels him gently rubbing the palm of her hands with his thumbs until within a flash her hands leave his own and take his face in her hands to pull him as close to her as she can before she leans forward pressing her lips through the bars of her cell to give him a kiss. An awkward kiss thanks to the bar causing the kiss to be short lived but not before her eyes go wide as saucers when she steps back from the bars to look at him in shock.
Those lips. She has felt those lips before. Has felt those strong hands before caressing her own so gently as though she is the most precious flower in the world. A realization that makes Ivy's eyes get wider and wider by the second as silent tears trickle down her cheeks. As her lips keep twitching until they break out into a bright smile when she raises up her fingers to graze them. A smile that remains on her face as she returns to stand right in front of him with only the bars of her cell separating them. Bars that don't stand a chance when she reaches through the opening with her left hand and place her hand down on his cheek lovingly causing his eyes to flutter shut from her touch. As her forehead comes down to lean against the bars as her green eyes stare back into his blue own.
" Get me out of here and i'll help you beat this guy. I promise."
" So we had another incident did we?"
Doctor Wood. Such a disgusting mammal in her eyes. A man who always treats every one of his patients the same. Treats them like they are one of his social experiments. A pitiful mammal. A mammal she couldn't wait to watch the worms crawl out of her eye sockets but no matter. Nothing now will break her good mood. Especially what had happened just a few hours ago. To now know the truth of so many mysteries that have plagued her mind for years. Have often left her wondering but no longer. Now she knew the truth and the truth was simply wonderful.
The Caped Crusader. The Dark Knight. The World's Greatest Detective. Oh she could go on and on about the silly little nicknames these mammals decided to give to this man. This wonderful man. No! Not a man. No he is a god. A living breathing god living amongst these mammals. A god that was always right there for everyone to see. She just didn't see it until now.
Bruce Wayne is Batman. Batman is Bruce Wayne. Oh how she could tear her hair out for not realizing this sooner. It is so simple. Makes so much sense. The funds that would be needed to supply him with the proper equipment. The mysterious aura each of them give off to the public with nobody truly knowing what to expect out of either of them. No matter though. She will berate herself about this later. She knows the truth now and that's all that matters. Especially one truth. A truth that she has often thought about but now was confirmed. He loves her. Truly loves her just like how she does for him. Two sides of a coin that shouldn't ever work out. One that chooses to align themselves on the side of light while the other chooses the dark. A true beauty and the beast type story. At least that is what the public would say about them if they were to ever find out.
A feeling that has made her feel light as a feather for hours. Even after they had come to her cell. The prison guards sent her by Doctor Wood himself. Disgusting mammals who always stare at her with lust as their hands would wander to check her for any weapons. As they would strap her to a table and put a muzzle on her face treating her like she is some kind of sick and deranged animal. Oh their day of reckoning will come. Just like this doctor's day will come.
" We? There's you and there's me, Doctor. There is no we or are "we" having a little transference moment, hmmm, doctor?"
" You're a very beautiful girl, Ivy. There is no need to be so nasty. A bitter beauty is a bird without…."
" Spare me the cornball poetry, doc. What are you doing with my orchid-rose hybrid?"
She wasn't stupid. She knew just where all of her plants mysteriously wandered off too whenever a cell check was done every single night and this was no different. All she had to do was look around the doctor's office to find the evidence she needed with one glaring right back at her. Her orchid-rose hybrid. Her beauty child who has lost some of her beauty. Has lost some of her flowers off her stems and she knew why. This doctor was doing something with them. The only question was just what?
" What have you done with the flowers?"
His hot breath touching her exposed neck making her skin crawl. God how she hates this man. Hates every little thing about him. A man who has always looked at her with nothing but lust since the moment he had been assigned to be her doctor during her stay here. A man who has always let his hands wander whenever she is brought inside of this room. Hands one day she will have the pleasure of feeding to one of her hungry children if she ever gets the chance.
" All therapeutic hobbies are removed from the cells at night. Harold's flies, Betty's knitting, your plants. You know that, Ivy. It's just a precaution."
" There were five now, there is only one left."
Her beautiful child. Her baby being shed of her beauty. Just what is this man up to? Just what is this man doing with her children?
" What flowers? Maybe they fell off somewhere. Now take your pill."
Ah yes the pill. She has heard the rumors of the affects this pill will have on another. Make even the most insane become sane. A way to bend even the toughest inmates to another's will. Oh yes she has heard of this pill. A pill she can watch being put towards the opening in her muzzle by Doctor Wood by a pair of tweezers. Smart move on the doctor's part. If he had done it with his fingers there would be no fingers left to retract. A pill Ivy allows to be put into her open mouth before she closes it shut and fakes a swallow causing to her disgust the doctor's eyes light up.
" That's a good girl."
This look of glee she watches in silent disgust. How could another take glee into doing such a thing to another? She knew the answer and the answer was simple. This man was just like most that call this asylum their home. In fact he belongs in one of those cells just like the rest of them. A doctor the moment she sees him turn his back to look at her orchid-rose hybrid gives the opening Ivy needs to spit out the pill down into her awaiting hand before she stuffs the pill down into her pant's pocket just in time as he glances back at her with the faintest of smiles.
" I know your plant is special. That's why I'm keeping it alive. You went on and on and on about it while you were in isolation."
" I did not."
Just what is this man planning? Was he saying these things for the people on the other side of the camera to hear? She knew so. Everything he speaks is a blatant lie. So just what is this man really up to?
" Ivy, I know how upset you are at the tower once you learned of its existence thanks to Mr Wayne."
Now this no matter how hard she tries to hide it leaves Ivy stunned. Just how did Doctor Wood know about Bruce's visit? Did he personally look up the visitor's log? Did some guard tip him off about the visit? And just how did he know she was upset about the tower being created in the first place? Too many questions for her liking. So much so she'll have to think more about them later as she masks her emotions into an emotionless mask.
" How it took away the light in your cell. I could get you a cell with a bigger window? A place for you to do your plant research."
Oh yes this man is certainly up to something. To the untrained eye this would look like a moment of a human being being kind to another but she knew better than that. The hidden excitement in his voice. The way his hands are starting to sweat so slightly as he tries to contain his excitement.
" Oh, yes. So grateful, Doctor Wood."
" If i did that for you, wouldn't you be grateful enough to behave for a while? Hmmm? If I do for you, what do you do for me?"
" I would reward you with a big delicious kiss."
" For a man to be attracted to you, he must be suicidal or insane."
Suicidal? Insane? That isn't the way she would use to describe a certain blue eyes caped crusader. Heroic….extraordinary….godlike but suicidal and insane? The good doctor doesn't even know the meaning of the words.
