Bad Day

It was a normal Friday night as the touch football team played their game only it wasn't going so well. Thomas normally being stuck inside of his head tries his best at trying to score for his team but couldn't. Rad cheered him on as normal and noticed his nephew's performance was low as the game went on. "You got it mate!" Rad called out to him. Thomas still being in his head shook off his uncle's words. Rad could tell his nephew was struggling and was frustrated as he too used to act like that when he was a teenager and playing for the team. At the end of the game the team had lost and went into the locker room. Rad waited for his nephew at his truck as the teen walked out to his uncle's truck and got in it. Rad then got into the truck and looked at his nephew . "Good game mate," Rad said with a soft smile hoping to cheer up his nephew.

"No it wasn't," Thomas huffed, not looking at his uncle. "I know tonight was a hard game but you did your best," Rad said, placing his hand on Thomas's shoulder. "It's not about the game uncle Rad," Thomas said looking at his uncle. Rad knew what he was talking about. "It's about everyone else not coming to your game," Rad said, still losing at his nephew. "Yeah…" Thomas said in a low tone. "Mate your dad wanted to be here he really did but you know how it is with a job site," Rad explained. "I know," Thomas said, not looking at his uncle. Bandit had to go to a job site while Chilli and the girls went to see Granddad Scout for his eye surgery. Stripe and Trixie with their girls went to visit Trixie's parents for the week and that left Rad and Frisky to watch over Thomas. "Can we go home now?" Thomas asked, still upset. "Sure mate," Rad said as he started the truck and then they were off. Now home at Bandit and Chilli's house. Rad and Frisky agreed to stay at their house so Thomas could be close to school. "Frisky must still be at work," Rad said noticing his fiancé is not home yet. Thomas sighed before getting out of the truck. "Mate wait," Rad said, getting out of the truck and going after his nephew. "Yeah?" Thomas asked, looking at his uncle. "Why don't we play some touch football or catch until Frisky gets here?" Rad offered. "I have some homework to do maybe afterwards," Thomas said as he started to unlock the door to the house. "Oh, yeah we could do that," Rad said rubbing the back of his neck.

Thomas and Rad both went inside as Thomas went upstairs and set up his homework in the dining room. Rad sat down at the couch and turned on the TV while Thomas did his homework. Rad turned to his nephew and noticed he was struggling with his homework. "Need some help mate?" Rad asked. "No it's okay," Thomas replied. Rad knew better than that as he stood up and walked over to the table. "History huh?" Rad said sitting down next to his nephew. "Yeah," Thomas replied with his head down. "Your dad would be able to help you a lot more than I could or your mum," Rad said looking about at the history book. "Which mom?" Thomas asked, still having his head down. "Your birth mum mate she always had better grades than me," Rad explained with a chuckle. "Of course she did," Thomas said, hiding his face from Rad. "Come on mate, this can be that hard," Rad said, now taking the book from his nephew and starting to read what he was learning. "I remember this! I can definitely help you," Rad said looking at his nephew who was still hiding his face from his uncle.

"What's the matter mate?" Rad asked, still looking at his nephew. "The only reason I have to do this homework is because I failed my history test!" Thomas shouted again still with his head down and hiding his face from Rad. "I'm sorry to hear that mate, did you fail today?" Rad asked, placing the history book down. "Yes! What kind of Heeler am I? With a dad who digs up bones for a living and literally discovers history!" Thomas mumbled into his paper. Rad then chuckled. "Mate there's nothing wrong with you, your just having a bad day," Rad said with a smile. Thomas then looked up at his uncle. "It just sucks," Thomas replied. "Why didn't you ask your dad for help?" Rad asked. "He was already stressed about leaving for this job site and missing my game. I didn't want to stress him out more," Thomas said looking back down at his paper. "Oh, I see," Rad said. "Well luckily you have me to help you!" Rad said with a smile. "I thought you didn't get good grades in school," Thomas said looking at his uncle.

"Well I do remember some things in school," Rad said as he pushed the book close to his nephew. "Okay tell me what you know," Thomas said as he and Rad put their heads together and finished up the homework. After the homework, the uncle and nephew went out to the backyard and played some catch. "So do you miss playing for the team uncle Rad?" Thomas said, throwing the ball to his uncle. "Sometimes I do," Rad said, catching the ball. "How do you like being on the same team your dad and uncles have been on?" Rad asked, throwing the ball back . "At the beginning it was strange but I got used to it," Thomas said catching the ball. Suddenly Rad got a phone call from Frisky. "Hey babe," Rad asked, answering the phone. "Yeah that sounds good," Rad said before turning to his nephew. "Does takeaway sound good to you mate?" Rad asked, looking to his nephew. "Takeaway?" Thomas asked, looking at his uncle. Rad chuckled forgetting that his nephew still hasn't gotten all of the Australian slag they use. "It's like what you call take out mate," Rad said with another chuckle. "Oh, yeah that sounds good." Thomas said holding the ball. Rad nodded before continuing his talk with Frisky.

"Yeah babe that sounds good and don't forget the spicy egg rolls," Rad said with a smile. "Okay babe I love you too," Rad said before hanging up the phone. "Now where we're we," Rad said with a smile. Thomas then threw the ball to his uncle who then caught it. "Come on mate is that all you got?" Rad asked as he threw the ball back. "Alright uncle Rad if you say so," Thomas said with a smile as he threw the ball as hard as he could to his uncle. Rad caught the ball and fell backwards to the ground. "Oh boy," Thomas said as he ran to his uncle. "Uncle Rad are you okay?" Thomas asked looking down at his uncle. "Yeah, I'm okay," Rad said, catching his breath from being knocked down. "I haven't had a ball thrown at me that hard since I was eighteen," Rad said with a chuckle still laying on the ground. Thomas then laid down next to his uncle and they looked up at the dusk sky watching the stars shine bright. "Uncle Rad?" Thomas asked while looking up at the stairs.

"Yes mate?" Rad asked while looking up at the stars. "Thanks for coming to my game," Thomas said, still looking up at the stars. "Your welcome mate, I wouldn't miss it for the world," Rad said with a smile. "Can I ask you something uncle Rad?" Thomas asked. "Sure mate, ask me anything," Rad said, tuning to his nephew. "Remember when you said I was like a son to you when I was in the hospital?" Thomas asked, turning to his uncle. "Yeah, I remember that," Rad said. "If I was like that to you how come you weren't around when I was growing up?" Thomas asked. Rad felt his heart sink. "Well mate I… I was going through a very hard time when your mother and I split and I just didn't think I belonged in your life at the time," Rad explained. "But now that I'm getting to know you more I feel out of place with you. Like I should have been with you my whole life," Thomas confessed. Rad then felt bad for doing this to his nephew and for the fact he was in more of Bluey and Bingo's life than he was in Thomas's life.

"I'm sorry mate I really am, I should have put my demons with your dad and mum away first before getting to know you," Rad explained. Thomas nodded in response. "Don't think I don't love you mate I love you so much, mate like my own like I told you before," Rad said, placing his hand on Thomas's shoulder as they still laid down in the cool grass. "You said you had demons, with my parents? What were they?" Thomas asked. Rad then lost his sense of focus and then explained to his nephew. "I was jealous of your parents mate I just thought I couldn't love again or be the father I wanted to be," Rad explained and started to feel his feelings hurt. "You'll be great dad someday uncle Rad," Thomas said with a smile. Rad smiled at that. "You think so mate?" Rad asked. "Of course I do, you're a real good uncle and I wouldn't lie to you," Thomas said as he hugged his uncle. Rad was surprised by the hug but he didn't care as long as he and nephew were close he didn't care. "Thanks mate," Rad said hugging his nephew back. "You did good Em," Rad thought to himself as he continued to hug his nephew.

Suddenly they heard a car horn from the front of the house. "Looks like aunt Frisky is home," Thomas said as he stood up. Rad was taken by surprise by this. "What did you call her mate?" Rad asked, hoping to hear it again. "Aunt Frisky, I thought I should start calling her that since you two are getting married soon," Thomas said looking down at his uncle. Rad smiled at that, almost having a tear in his eye. "Did I say something wrong?" Thomas asked as Rad stood up and placed his hand on his nephew's shoulder. "No, you're actually the first to call her that since well… Bluey still calls her her fairy godmother," Rad said softly with a smile. "Well she will be my aunt so I just.." Thomas started to say until Rad hugged him tightly. "Thanks mate you don't know how much you saying she'll be your aunt means to me," Rad said, still hugging his nephew. "Your welcome uncle Rad," Thomas said hugging his uncle tightly. Despite everything that has happened to Rad and Thomas. Thomas felt closer to his uncle even though he wished things could have been different when he was growing up.

"Are you boys hungry?" Frisky asked from the deck. Thomas and Rad let go of their hug and looked to Frisky. "So we're so hungry Aunt Frisky," Thomas said as he started walking to the house. Frisky was surprised by that response but felt warm by it. Thomas and Rad then join Frisky in the dining room and started to have their dinner. "So how was your guy's day?" Frisky asked, looking to her fiancé and soon to be nephew. Rad and Thomas looked at each other and smiled. "It started off as a bad day but then it got better now that I'm spreading it with you two," Rad and Frisky smiled at each as they placed their hands together before eating their dinner.

The End.
