Usopp yawned wide as he stretched. It was late into the night. He'd drawn the short straw for watch, getting the one smack dab in the middle of the night shift. If he couldn't gotten away with it, he would've napped.
But then he would be in the same camp as Zoro who wasn't allowed to do watch anymore because he always fell asleep. It didn't matter that he pretended most, if not all, of the time. Usopp would've bet good Beli that the slick bastard did it on purpose.
He'd traded off with Robin the hour before. She sounded genuinely tired, a surprise as she was normally awake to that hour anyway.
Ah well.
Usopp was staring off into the distance when he heard a noise. In an instant he had Black Kabuto out, aimed in the direction of the noise. Shrilly, he said, "C-come out! The Great Usopp isn't scared!"
"Oy! Watch where you aim that thing."
Usopp blinked as he realized… "Sanji?!"
"Yeah?" The blond was walking up with what looked like a cup of something. "Who were you expecting?"
"Not Zoro," was the only answer Usopp had.
"Tch. Like that bastard could wake up at this hour," Sanji grumbled.
Usopp shook his head and asked, "What in the world are you doing up?"
Sanji blinked, a strange expression crossing his face for a second before he mumbled, "I couldn't sleep." He held out the cup to Usopp. "I figured I could brew up some coffee while I was awake."
"Oh." Usopp smiled before carefully turning it down. "I'm sorry! I don't like it straight."
"You don't like it straight?" There was a particular tone to Sanji's voice that caught Usopp off-guard.
Instead of picking at it, Usopp explained, "Coffee without sugar or anything is just kinda nasty."
Suddenly Sanji looked a little put-out before he nudged Usopp and said, "It's got a nice, full body. Perfection to someone like me."
"But it's bitter," Usopp insisted.
"I like it when it's darker. And it's got a good bit of curl on top." For some reason he rushed, "Of foam."
"Eh?" Usopp peered at the coffee. "There's no foam, Sanji."
Sanji's eye twitched, working his mouth. Finally he seemed to decide, "I'll just...go dump this."
"I mean…" Usopp shrugged as Sanji turned away. "You could add sugar or milk? I'd drink it then."
"So you don't like it if it's strong?"
"No? That's what I said earlier." Usopp was starting to feel like there was a conversation going on that he was missing. "I don't like it when it's thick like that. Thinner coffee is better. Practically white, with a bit of spice to give it some personality."
For some reason, that perked Sanji up. "Right." Happier, Sanji began heading back into the ship. "I'll put a bit of creamer and some sugar in it."
"Just a spurt of creamer! I don't like it thick, remember?" Usopp made sure to call out before he was out of earshot. "Put more milk in than creamer!"
Usopp just kinda stood there, trying to figure out...what? Sanji bringing him coffee was weird, but the conversation was even weirder . Like, Sanji didn't even mention adding cinnamon or anything? And why coffee ? There was definitely something he was missing.
Whatever it was, it was still there when Sanji came back. He almost seemed to be glowing when he presented the coffee cup back to Usopp.
"As asked for," Sanji said, flourishing the cup with the precision of a perfect waiter.
Usopp took the cup now, humming in appreciation at the color. It looked perfect, with a strange foam art that looked like the Op-Op Fruit.
Suddenly, Usopp understood.
"Oh! I get it now!"
Sanji brightened up. "Really?"
"Yeah!" He pointed at the cup. "You miss Law!"
Sanji stood, frozen, before he facepalmed. Then, sighing, he said, "I hope you enjoy your coffee."
"I will!" Usopp gulped the cup down. His eyes widened; it was so good …!
He couldn't help the moan that escaped his throat. It was the best coffee he'd ever had! Again, as he took another, more appreciative sip, he let out a groan as the warmth made the cold of the night flee.
"Wow!" he exclaimed, finally taking the cup away from his face. "This is really good !" Usopp turned to Sanji, saying, "Could you make me another…?" He cut himself off before asking, "Uh, Sanji, are you okay?"
"What?" Sanji seemed to have been spacing off. Shaking his head, he asked, "Yeah, why?"
"Your nose is bleeding."
A flat expression sat on his face as he brought a hand up to touch just under his nose. "Huh. You're right."
It was awkward for a second as Sanji stood there, letting his nose bleed.
"...You might want to take care of that," Usopp suggested.
"Huh?" Sanji was obviously spacing off again. After a second during which Usopp just stared at Sanji, something seemed to click with him. "Yeah, I probably should."
Usopp held the cup back out to Sanji. "You should bring me another cup next time I have watch!"
Sanji nodded, wiping at his nose. "Definitely." He took the cup and, as he left, he said, "Anything that can make you moan like that."
Usopp nodded after him before he realized what Sanji had said. He blinked. "...What?" Louder he yelled, "WHAT?!"
The only answer he got was Sanji's happy hum trailing back down into the ship.
