Disclaimers: I have not seen all of grey's anatomy (I just started season 16 as of when I'm writing this), but I have been wanting to write this since when I first started grey's, so I decided to start it. Since I have only seen grey's not even once, there will definitely be mistakes with the timeline, when characters are introduced, and I may forget things. Also, I am not a doctor, so I will probably screw up some of the medical terms, and this probably won't have much medical accuracy. Anyways, enjoy!
Chapter One: A Hard Day's Night
The classic Seattle rain came down lightly as the 2006 intern class of Seattle Grace Hospital's surgical program made their way to the doors of the large hospital for their first day. Among them were Lexi Grey, Mike Chang, Rachel Berry, Mercedes Jones, Quinn Fabray, and Kurt Hummel.
Rachel stepped inside, and stood a few feet away from the door, looking around, a smile upon her face. After about thirty seconds, a few nervous interns practically ran into her trying to get a look at the incoming trauma. She realized immediately that things were going to be busier here than in Lima Ohio.
"Intern assignments," Chief Webber started. "Alexandra Grey, Kurt Hummel, Sara Dalton, Jenna Morgan, your with Cristina Yang."
The interns had found their way to their locker room, and were now being assigned their residents for the year. "Quinn Fabray, Naomi Elden, Harry Phelps, Chris Melanie, your with Alex Karev." Chief Webber continued. "Mike Chang, Jessica Bryant, Mercedes Jones, Archie Jordan, and Harriet Payne, you're with Izzie Stevens. And finally, Rachel Berry, George O'Malley, Peter Hoffman, Sylvia McBride, and Layla Feyrer, you're with Meredith Grey."
The interns scurried over to their residents, already feeling overwhelmed.
"Ok, Chang, you present," Izzie said, handing him the chart.
"Sabrina Pevensie, 28 year old female, admitted for a small Spasm blockage in the Aorta, surgery scheduled for this afternoon to correct it," he said.
"Good job. Now," she started, as her pager went off. "Incoming trauma," she said, after looking at it. "I'm sorry Miss Pevensie, we have to go. Sabrina nodded, as the doctors left the room.
"Ok, here's a crash course on trauma treatment. Which of you can tell me the ABC's of trauma?" she asked. All five of the interns raised their hands, and she pointed at Mercedes.
"Airway, Breathing, Circulation," she said confidently.
"Correct," Izzie said.
By then, they had put on the trauma gowns, as the ambulance sirens wailed.
They went out, and walked in with gurney. After the patient had been treated, the six of them were heading back to rounds, when a little boy came up to them.
"Are you a doctor?" He asked Izzie.
"Yeah, how can I help you?" She asked, kneeling down to his height.
He nodded, and then led the six of them outside. "This deer is really hurt," he said sadly, pointing at the back of a truck.
"A deer?" Izzie asked, and she nodded again. She walked over to the truck, and saw a deer that had been shot.
"Where are you parents?" Izzie asked him.
"My daddy and sister went inside. My sister got an owie on her head." he responded.
Izzie thought for a moment. "We'll help the deer," she said, smiling at him. The interns looked at each other, wondering where this was going.
The morning passed by pretty quickly, and before they knew it, the interns were heading to lunch.
Mercedes sat down at an empty table, and was soon joined by Kurt Hummel, her best friend from high school and med school.
"Is it just me, or is this way harder than it should be?" Mercedes asked, slumping back in her chair.
"Oh, believe me, it is," Kurt said, picking up his sandwich.
"Dr. Stevens made me do a ton of paperwork, and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with it! And the only patient I've helped treat was a deer," Mercedes said.
"A deer?" He asked.
She nodded. "Some guy shot it, and his kid asked us to help it."
"Dr. Yang has got to be the strictest resident to ever walk the planet," Kurt said, a look of annoyance on his face.
"I don't know how I'm going to get through this year," Mercedes said.
Meanwhile, Quinn was sitting with four other residents.
"Isn't Dr. Karev hot?" asked Naomi Elden, another of Karev's interns.
"Totally," replied Archie Jordan. "I'm pretty sure he's straight though," he said, a tone of disappointment in his voice.
"I wonder if he's into interns," another of them asked.
Quinn was confused, she hadn't even thought about dating anyone, let alone her resident. She looked up, and saw that Dr's Karev, Yang, Grey, O'Malley, and Stevens were looking at them from two tables away, laughing. She blushed a bit, realizing they had overheard them.
While this was going on, Rachel sat alone at a table in the back, observing the people around her. It was mostly interns and residents, while most of the attendings were working.
She hadn't realized at first, because the residents and interns have the same colored scrubs, but four of the residents were sitting with an intern. She was puzzled. The residents hadn't even learned the names of any of the interns, but those four were sitting with one. She figured they must already know each other, and looked back down at her food.
After lunch, all of the interns returned to their residents.
"Alright everyone, you will all do ten souchres on your practice model, whoever does the best gets to scrub in on the next Trauma surgery. The rest of you can watch from the gallery" Meredith told her interns.
They had gone to the skills lab after lunch all excited to have a shot to scrub in, as opposed to watching from the gallery.
Rachel leaned over, carefully stitching.
"Done!" Sylvia McBride said, as Meredith walked over. Meredith looked down, and simply nodded.
WIthin the next ten minutes, everyone else finished.
"O'Malley, your scrubbing in. The rest of you, better luck next time," Meredith announced. Everyone got up, all disappointed except for George, who had a modest smile on his face.
"First he's sitting with the residents, now he's the first intern to scrub in?" Rachel said to herself. She was sure that the residents favored him, and wanted to know why.
"Did you hear that one of Dr. Grey's interns gets to scrub in?" Kurt asked, as he and Mercedes walked up to the gallery. A pregnant woman had come in after being in a car accident, and needed an emergency liver transplant, as hers had been damaged due to a lack of blood flow from a damaged artery. They had called UNOS, and found a donor on short notice.
"Really?" Mercedes asked.
Kurt nodded. "I wish I got a shot at that!" he said.
They sat down, excited to watch their first surgery.
Dr. Bailey was about to make the first cut, when suddenly the patient's stats changed.
"Dammit, she's in labor," Meredith said. "O'Malley, check her cervix, maybe we can stop it."
"She's crowing!" George said.
"Page OB," Dr. Bailey instructed.
"Crap, the fetus is in distress!" Meredith said. At this point, the interns in the gallery were at the edge of their seats.
"Suction please," George said. Just under a minute later, the baby was born. The other interns were in awe. How had he known what to do?
Once the surgery was over, George was back in the locker room, when he was stormed by his fellow interns.
"That was amazing!" One person said.
"How did you stay so calm?" Asked another.
The interns' first shift was over, and they were all more tired then they had ever been in their lives, but also felt more alive then they ever had.
Quinn had been updating a few patient files for Dr. Karev, when he walked in.
"You almost done, all of the other interns already left," he said, sitting down next to her.
"Yes," Quinn said, not looking up. She finished the file, and looked up. "What do you care, it's not like we're friends," she said, shaking her head a bit.
He shrugged. "I don't know, you just seemed a little tense today."
"It's my first day, what do you expect, total tranquility?"
Neither of them said anything for a few moments.
"Well, if you're not too tired, I'll be in the on-call room," Alex said, getting up.
Quinn laughed a bit, shaking her head.
Rachel had been walking to her car, when she saw George a couple yards in front of her.
"Hey, Dr. O'Malley," she said, jogging to catch up to him.
"Oh, hey," he said. "Your name is Rachel, right?"
"Yes, Rachel Berry," she said holding out her hand. He shook it, and smiled at her.
"I was just wondering something," she said. "You seemed so close to the residents. Do you already know them?"
"Uh, yeah," he said. "I- uh- I grew up near Dr. Yang," he lied.
"Oh, I just thought- nevermind," she said.
"Ok, well, I should go. I need some sleep," he said.
"Ok, I'll see you Thursday."
"Yeah, see you then."
A/N: I know this chapter may have felt uneventful, it was mainly just to introduce the characters, and a couple of storylines. The next one will be a little more strenuous. I do plan on naming the chapters after songs, like Grey's episodes, and for this one, the only good song for it I could think of was A Hard Day's Night, but I'll name most of them after songs that weren't used for Grey's. Please review!
Title Song: A Hard Day's Night by The Beatles
Next Chapter: Rachel finds out George's secret, Quinn and Alex grow closer, The interns start working with other residents and attendings.
