Threatening spies and super soldiers while being a good godfather
Summary: Reborn as Obadiah Stane he decide not to kill Tony Stark because that plan didn't end to well for the last guy. Instead, he's going to be the best godfather he can be and threaten superspies and super soldiers. Just so they get the message clear about not killing or harming his godson because if they do, he gets to burrow their body in a desert. Just don't tell Tony what he does in his free time. (one-shot) (OC reborn as Obadiah)

The story of his life.
Who is he?
Will actually, that is a good question because he didn't recall his name. He did, however recall he had a son name Tony who was meant to die, but he took the bullet and now he has another life. It takes him a little while to understand that the world he was born into was not his own. He only worked that out after he met Howard Stark.
"Your Howard Stark," he said.
"I am."
Obadiah mind is like a slow gear that is trying to turn the moment the man introduce himself. By the time it clicked, Howard looked mildly concerned. Most likely because there was this man staring at him for far too long only to suddenly open up his mouth and scream as if he was being murdered.
"Argh!"
Seeing this lifetime father shotting himself in the head had been pretty bad, but also seeing the Howard Stark had been just as worst.
"Are you okay?"
"Get away from me. I just thought it was a bad choice in names, but no. I'm here. I'm actually here and you're a Stark," Obadiah said, pointing a finger at the man.
"Yes."
"Argh," he screamed again.
Let's just say the first meeting did not go well and running away was the best option he could think of at the time.
It takes his mind a little while to come to terms with the fact that Howard Stark was real and Captain America actually existed. Although, granted the man was stuck in ice and maybe Obadiah should be nice and tell them where he was, but really, he didn't want to. Because that sounded like more work than it was worth. So, Cap, can spend a few more years with his cat nap while he tried to come to terms with the fact that he's the Obadiah Stane.
Remember the man?
The guy that tried to kill Tony Stark and ripped out his own godson heart without a second thought. Only to be killed by that said godson minutes later. The man was the worse godfathers of the history of godfathers only ever using Tony for his brainpower to keep SI running.
Will not this time.
This time he's going to be the best godfather he can be. There's just one problem.
Howard Stark didn't really know him, just yet nor was Tony born. So, for now he sticks to being the best friend he can ever be. And, who knows maybe Howard might actually pay attention to his own son and not be a jerk in this timeline.
With his issues aside Obadiah does just that and reintroduces himself to Howard Stark.
"Hello, my name is Obadiah Stane and I do not in fact scream at people faces," he paused. "Often. I don't do it often."
"Howard Stark, so why did you scream at me just a moment ago?"
"Oh, you know. Past life issues."
Howard blinked.
"No, seriously past life issues. By the way, I have a great idea for your business."
They worked together and they did just fine until Howard started drinking.
Howard had always been a drinker and Obadiah was one to, but he didn't drink anywhere near as much as Howard did. To make matters worse he was a violent drunk. Granted he started drinking more when Tony was born. Peggy tried to shield the young Stark from the man and so did many other butlers and maids, but Howard only listened to one person.
That person was Obadiah and even then, the man didn't fully listen.
"I'm allowed to drink," Howard said.
"I know."
"Then stop trying to be my mother and telling me I can't drink."
"I'm not saying that, Howard. I'm saying at least try not to drink as much. Try is the key word. You have a son now."
"Stuff him."
"Stark!" Obadiah said. "He's your son. He your heir don't treat him like that."
"The kid can't do anything right."
"That's because he still has to learn."
"Then he needs to learn faster. How can he help find Steve if he can't even make weapons?"
"Steve? Is that what this is on about? Your mind stuck in the past Howard if you're still trying to look for Steve. Even Peggy is moving on with life, but you're over here drinking yourself silly. How do you think Steve would feel if he ever found out that one his old co-worker is emotionally abusing his son and neglecting him?"
Howard didn't answer his mind more focus on the blue prints in front of him.
"Fine, don't answer. Drink your life away for all I care, but I'm taking Tony."
"You can't take him. He's is my son."
"Really? You don't act like it. Pick what you want to do Howard. Stay in the past looking for a man that somewhere in the ocean. Or, stay in the current to raise your son. I've already made up my choice."
Obadiah decided he wanted nothing to do with Howard Stark after that and did take Tony away. Tony would always visit his father, but it was just safer for the youngest Stark to stay with him then it was to stay with Howard.
"Pack your bags kid."
"Why Obie?"
"Because you're going to stay with your godfather for a little while. How does that sound?"
Tony eyes light up and Obadiah could never understand how the real Obadiah could try and kill the kid.
"I'll be right back then Obie."
And, of Tony goes asking for Jarvis to help with his bags.
The last Obadiah Stane might've been able to turn a blind eye, but he was not that Obadiah and turning a blind eye was not an option.
Howard and Maria died leaving Tony in his care. The man was a teenage by the time the pair died and decided he wanted out of Obadiah home. He couldn't stop that. Tony was Tony after all, so he let him go, but soon after Howard death Tony started drinking. He drunk a lot and slept with women so Obadiah did his best to pick up the pieces.
It was hard to do with him being CEO, but he did it anyway. He just didn't like finding his godson half dead in ditches.
"You really need to lay of the drinking."
"Obie," a half drink Tony cheered. "Where you been? You got your spies watching me don't you."
"There not spies their bodyguards and yes."
He made sure to pay a few extra people to keep Tony alive.
"Come on Tony."
He picked his godson of the ground.
"Aren't you working Obie?"
"Not at the moment."
"But you should be working. You be late."
Tony too out of it, too drunk to know what is going on and so Obadiah places him in a car.
"You know I had a weird dream last night," a drunk Tony said.
"You did?" he asked putting Tony seatbelt on.
"I did," Tony said with delight as Obadiah closed the door. Sitting beside his Godson and telling the driver to drive. "You we're trying to kill me. And, I had this weird nightlight thing in my chest and you ripped it out."
"Oh."
"You're not going to try and kill me are you Obie?"
"Never. Although, trying to keep you alive is much harder."
"Just don't do the whole killing thing."
"I won't Tony. Not this lifetime."
Tony too drunk to understand, but all Obadiah can do is comfort his drunk godson the best he can.
"Just don't kill me," Tony said.
"I won't. I promise I won't."
He would never harm Tony Stark. He was not that Obadiah.
It does not stop Tony Stark from being kidnapped nor does it stop Obadiah from freaking out when he finds out.
"What do you mean he's missing?" he yelled at the military.
He was just in a meeting only to be told that Tony Stark had been missing for more than twenty-four hours, but don't worry their looking. Although, chances of finding Tony Stark alive is fairly slim.
"He's missing sir," the army personal said.
"I know that! But he's missing and the car he was meant to be in has been bombed. And, you lot are just standing here picking daisies. I want my godson brought home alive. Or, else I'm going to that sandbox myself and blowing up everything that moves until he's brought home. Got it!"
"Mr. Stane," Rhodey said as he walked towards him.
"Rhodey, call me Obadiah."
He's been trying to get the young man to call him Obadiah since they first met. Rhodey never does.
"Of, course Mr. Stane. Is it true about Tony?"
"Yes, he's missing because someone lost him in a sandbox."
He knows it not the military fault because they can't control the outcomes on how these things run, but it does not stop Obadiah worry, nor does it stop his yelling.
"I'm going out there to look for him."
"Oh, thank God," he said taking Rhodey under his arm. And, pointing his finger at the man. "You see this good man will actually do his job. Someone promoted him already."
He finds out that you can't just promote someone because Obadiah said so. This does not stop him from reminding the military to do it anyway.
They find Tony of course, they do. He's back, hurt both physically and mentally, but his godson is back and Obadiah is a little hurt because the man wanted a cheeseburger and a press conference.
"Are you sure he didn't ask to see me?" he asked Pepper for the tenth time. Yes, he knows Tony is speaking, but Obadiah finds this question a little bit more important then what Tony is telling the press.
"Yes, sir he asked for a cheeseburger and a press conference."
"But no, me?"
"No, sir. No, you."
He isn't sulking he just crying on the inside and he knows Tony was pulled away of the stage by Rhodey.
"Obie, you, okay?" Tony asked.
"I think he's sulking because you didn't want to see him," Pepper said.
"He was awfully worried about you Tones," Rhodey said.
"But he isn't mad?" Tony asked.
"Of, course I'm not mad," Obadiah said picking himself back up. "I yelled at every military personal when you we're away. I'm worried, turning grey and sulking because you didn't want to see me."
"Eh, sorry. Thought you be mad."
"Mad? Whatever for."
"I just said that SI would not be making any more weapons."
He waved that of.
"Weapons? I don't care about that. Although next time when you have a sudden enlightenment after a life changing experience. Tell me, so we can plan out what to do with it."
He takes Tony into a hug.
"Beside I'm just happy that your back. Now, come on you are going to a doctor."
"But I don't want to…"
"Doctor," he said. "You've spent months in a sandbox. You are going to a doctor."
"Aww man."
So, he dragged Tony to one of their personal doctors telling Pepper it wasn't a problem, after she thank him taking Tony to see medical help.
It turned out someone else tried to kill Tony. Someone that worked for SI and Obadiah finds out who it is.
"I can't let you do that," he said to the man.
"And, why not?"
There's a gun in his hand.
"Because you're trying to kill my godson. It's in the title after all. Looking after them comes with the job of being a godfather. And, that's why I can't let you do that," he smirked. "Although, don't worry. They will never find your body."
And, they don't find his body. The man body is lost somewhere in the middle of the desert. He was still Obadiah, after all and Obadiah did not have a problem with killing.
It didn't take Obadiah long for him to find out about Iron man mainly because one of the cars got smashed during the test run flight.
"You have bullet holes," Pepper said.
"Will you see…"
"There's a dint in the car," Obadiah said. His hand touching the rough dint in one of the rarest cars in Tony Stark collection.
"My bad," Tony said casually.
"A dint."
"Mr. Stane," Pepper said. "He has bullet holes in his suit."
Obadiah waved a hand because that's old news. He's more concerned about the dint in the car. Beside it's only a problem if Tony Stark was bleeding out on the lab floor. Tony wasn't bleeding, but there is a dint in the car.
"That's old news Pepper. But this dint, now this dint is a nightmare. Tony no more flying."
"You know I'm not a kid anymore Obie."
"This dint says otherwise. Oh, the poor car."
Yes, he knows he is sulking on the ground right beside a car.
"Pepper. Can you help me out of the suit?" Tony said.
It was right here where Obadiah was sure Pepper wanted a raise.
Phil Coulson would like to make it clear that he didn't get kidnapped, at all. He was a well train spy after all, but now he found himself tied to a chair rope around his hands and legs.
He can get out of this anytime he wanted. Expect for the fact, that there's seven other people dressed in suits standing around him.
"Phil Coulson from SHIELD," Obadiah said. "I supposed you're not called SHIELD yet, are you?"
"No, sir its…"
"Nope, don't say it. That name is far too long, but SHIELD is much better. Obadiah Stane, but you know me of course."
"Yes, sir."
"Naturally, you would have a file on me don't you."
"Yes, sir."
"And, naturally you knew what happened to the other guy that crossed Tony Stark."
Dead. Body never found, murdered by Obadiah Stane, but not enough proof to put the man behind bars.
"Then take my warning Phil. Do not harm my godson, or you and your little group will end up like him."
There's a gun in the man hand.
"And, let's just say I don't really have a problem in killing. Do I make myself clear Phil?"
"Yes, sir."
Because he wasn't going to ask how Obadiah knew his name.
"Good. Oh, and one last warning don't tell Tony. He doesn't know what his godfather does in his free time. Best not to worry him. It would make Tony very upset and I don't like it when he is upset."
He nodded his head and watch as the men and women walk away into the darkness. Along with Obadiah.
"You know I'm still tied up," Phil said.
"Oh, please. Your Phil Coulson. Superspy as Tony would put it if he knew you existed. So, go ahead and break out whenever you want."
Note to self, do not cross Obadiah.
Natasha meets him next. She undercover when Stark brings it up.
"You know Obie wants to see you."
Obadiah, she thinks to herself. Stark godfather and a man that actually kidnapped Phil and threatened his life warning him not to cross Tony Stark.
"Do you know why?" she asked.
"Not too sure, but I'm sure it can't be that bad. He pretty much hug Pepper when he met her and then told me to marry her."
Or, yeah sure he's nice to the one woman that's been by Stark side way before he was Iron man. Natasha got a feeling though that Obadiah wasn't going to welcome her with warm smiles and hugs.
So, she goes anyway and Stane in his chair.
"I thought if I gave Tony his potion as CEO, I would get less paperwork, but nope he makes Potts CEO and I get stuck with more paperwork. At least I don't need to deal with the media anymore." Stane wrinkles up his face in disgust. "Those lot are the worse."
"You wanted to see me sir."
"Of course, take a sit."
She does. At least she not tied to a chair like Phil was.
"Now, let's not play anymore games. I know who you are and you know who I am. I also know that Tony has no doubt worked it out that you're not who you say you are. So, let's talk about that report."
"Report?" she said.
"Oh, please. Don't play dumb with me. I know all about that little report you have, Tony doesn't just yet, but I do. I know your writing one about him. So, let's get one thing straight. Why are you not so opened minded with him like you are with the other members?"
She wasn't actually expecting him to pull out a paper copy of her said report.
"Not qualified. Shame, I thought you knew better than that since you know he's dying."
She wonders how he knows so much. He just smirked putting her report into the bin.
"They say your good at reading people. So, read my godson. Don't read the mask he hides behind, but read his true intentions. Because if you so much harm him in anyway. You're going to end up in a sandbox. And, don't think for a second that I won't go up against one of Fury puppets. Because I will. And, I will admit Natasha. You might have the skills to take me down, but I have the money and the connections."
All she can do is nod her head.
"Good, now go on. I do believe you have a new report to write up. While I deal with this damn paperwork."
She leaves the room and all she hears is Obadiah cursing paperwork.
"So, what did Obie want with you?" Stark asked.
"Nothing," she said.
Tony pretty sure he's dying. So, he books a donut shop since that seemed like the right thing to do. He wasn't expecting to be found by his godfather no doubt the man started to track him down the moment he noticed Tony wasn't in the tower. Of, course he was because Obadiah is always tracking him down. Something about making sure, he looked after himself which is silly because Tony can look after himself. He can.
"You book out a donut shop and you didn't tell me," his godfather said from the ground sounding most upset.
"It's a one-man party Obie."
"Will make it two and come inside because it's far too hot out here."
"But I rather be alone."
"Nonsense, if you're dying, you're going to die putting up with me."
He's not going to ask how the man knows because Obadiah always knows. So, he fly's down and together they eat donuts and speak about life. And, no he isn't going to marry Pepper because the pair of them are not even dating. Nor, does he know about this kid name Peter Parker and he won't call terrorist to his house and even though he won't admit it out loud. He is thankful that Obadiah took him away from Howard all those years ago.
He's thankful to have at least one positive role model in his life that didn't try and screw him over.
"Now, Tony," Obadiah said. "Next time when you're dying you make sure to tell me."
"How did you?"
"Tony, Tony, Tony," he said. "I'm your godfather I always know when something wrong. I'm just a bit shame you didn't come clean to me."
"I didn't want you to worry too much Obie."
"My godson Tony Stark aka Iron man. I'm going to worry about you. It's in the job of being a godfather. Just promise me if it happens again, you will tell me."
"You make it sound as if I won't die."
Obadiah smirked.
"I'm sure of it. Speaking of being sure, let's welcome the old man."
At first, he isn't too sure who his godfather is talking about.
"Fury. Stop being Batman by hiding in the shadows and come and join us."
A man from the shadows does just that. Tony learned that his name is Fury. He just can't understand why Obadiah keeps glaring at him as if he commented some awful crime.
Tony Stark pulled through like he always dose coming up with a new element.
"That's my boy," Obadiah said. "Now, let's go out and get some donuts to celebrity."
Donuts sound like a good idea. Better then dying that's for sure.
Clint encountered Obadiah next. Almost everyone knows about the man he's infamous at SHIELD with a stare scarier than Fury's.
Now, if only Clint understood what he had done to tick of Obadiah Stane off because unlike the others he hadn't even been anywhere near Stark. Yet, here he was hanging upside down of a bridge leg tied to rope his weapons taken of him and Obadiah looking as if he had places to be.
"Today's Tony birthday," the man said. "And, I do not wish to be late to another one. Nor, am I going to be late to this, one. So, let's make this clear Birdbrain. Do not harm my godson."
"Or, you kill me," Clint said.
"Yes, how did you know?" Obadiah seemed to generally want to know.
"People been talking about you."
"Have they?" Obadiah looked honestly shocked by the news.
"Yes, Fury not too pleased."
"Is this because I kept glaring at him when he spoke to my godson? Will tell him that I do not like it when people walk into moments of moral support."
Clint just nod, his head because there wasn't anything else he could do.
"Now, I like you birdbrain. I really do. But if you show that you have a close mind and just go along with the leader. Then I can promise you one thing. You'll find yourself at the bottom of the sea. Do I make myself clear?"
"Not to harm Tony in anyway?" Clint asked Obadiah nodded. "Then yeah, you make yourself clear."
"That's very good. Now, let me help you back up. Also do me a favour. Don't tell my godson what I do in my free time. It would make him terribly worried."
Frankly, Clint can't see Stark worried about anything, but he just nodded his head and let Obadiah pull him back up. When he gets back to base and informed Fury of what had happened, he can't help, but laugh when Phil brings it back up.
"Why does he help you free? When I was stuck to a chair for over an hour."
"I don't know. He said he liked me though."
"Typically, Stane being a man with favourites."
Of, course they win. Rhodey and him work together again and of course just right when Tony Stark was about to kiss Pepper, Obadiah interrupted.
"So, are you going to get married now or later?" he asked.
Tony is not impressed he's just glad Pepper had dealt with this before.
"I was about to kiss her," he pointed out.
"I know and I want grandkids. I'm not getting any younger Tony."
Pepper pushed him away and this is why Tony loves her so they finally get their kiss just right when the fireworks go of.
"Do you have to ask that question every time?" Rhodey asked.
"What? I want grandkids. Speaking of, which when are you getting married. Because if Tony isn't having any soon then maybe you will."
Rhodey goes pale.
"I'm not even your son."
"Yeah, but your family anyway. So, grandkids or no grandkids?"
"No, I do not have kids," Rhodey said.
"You mean my only hope of having grandkids is Tony? Damn, that's going to take forever."
Obadiah noticed Happy nearby.
"Happy, when are you going to have kids?"
"Boss, not again."
Obadiah decided it was best not to upset a God.
After all, Thor might not know how Earth works, but he is still a God, older than all of them and no doubt wise when it comes to his own world.
So, as much as Obadiah wanted to tell the God of Thunder not to mess with his godson, he decided it was also a better idea to just keep walking. Now, Steve. Steve is a man he wanted to see.
"Let me get this straight. Stane hack into our system, broke in and is now having a conversation with Captain America. Whom has only just woken up a week ago?" Fury asked.
"Yes, sir," Agents replied.
"And, why did you just let him walk in here?" Fury asked.
"It's best not to get on the bad side of Tony Stark," Agent Coulson. "I don't think he would like it too much if his godfather showed up haze and likely drug one day back at his tower. It won't take him too long to figure it out who did it."
"Yeah, and then we would have to deal with Iron man trying to destroy our whole base. I say let Cap deal with a over protective godfather," Barton said. "Beside Stane won't hurt the man. He just, threaten to kill him."
That does not make Fury feel any better. He knows Stane is a thorn in his backside. He's been scarring agents off if they so much sneeze in Stark direction. Fury himself was the only one that got away with the, 'I'm going to kill you,' chat and that was only because Stane glared at him for twenty minutes. Even though he didn't want to admit it, Barton makes a point. So, he will let Stane do what he wants and explain to Steve later. On, why a scary, bold man broke into his room and threatened to kill him.
One hour later Steve does come out of his room looking a little pale.
"So, um. Does anyone want to tell me why Stane thinks I'm going to stab my shield into Tony Stark chest?"
Fury does not have an answer to that, nor does anyone else.
Tony Stark does not call Pepper. He wanted to, he really did, but when you are carrying a nuke on your back thinking this would be your last phone call the person, he goes to is Obadiah. The man been there for Tony when his father hadn't. He took Tony away from Howard hash words to care for him on a much more loving manner. He's picked Tony up and dealt with his bull shit longer than anyone else had.
So, when he wanted to talk to someone during the moment, he thought was his last he asked Jarvis to call Obadiah and Jarvis does just that.
"Tony," his godfather said. Looking much older than he had ever done before. "You didn't have to."
"It was my choice."
"I know and I'm so proud of you son."
Obadiah had always called him son, shortly after Howard died. At first, he hated the word because even Howard never called him son, but for hearing it for so long coming from him Tony has learnt to deal with.
"Thanks dad, for everything."
He wasn't Obadiah son nor was he Tony, father, but he was one of the few positive role models Tony had in his life. And, just as soon as he said it the nuke goes off and his eyes close then he falls
It's after the battle where Obadiah meets the Hulk. He was in New York at the time and was force to flee along with everyone else. He found shelter nearby and watched Tony send that nuke to space. Answered his phone and now he walking over towards the Avengers.
"You really shouldn't be here," Clint said.
"Move out of the way."
He pushed birdbrain to the side and dash to Tony side to find that he is indeed alive and breathing.
"Hey dad," Tony said weakly. "Um, sorry about the phone call."
"Don't you dare do that to me again. Understand. But I am so glad your back."
Something breathing down his neck. Turning around he finds the Hulk looming over him. Obadiah does what someone would never do and shake the Hulk hand.
Hulk is clearly lost on why he's shaking his big green hand, but he just saved his godson life.
"Thank you for saving my boy life. Thank you."
"Coulson right," Natasha said. "He does have favourites."
