Along with Thomas for breaking the rules, Gally also sends Newt to the pit for making Thomas a Runner. Unexpressed feelings between the two of them arise. They sat in the Pit in silence.

"Truth is, I can't lose you, Tommy." Newt said harshly. "When you ran past those bloody doors and into the maze, I thought I had, and it was devastating. You're leaving again soon, and I'd never get over it if I didn't tell you."

"Tell me what?" Thomas asked gently, barely managing to hide his anticipation.

Newt took a deep breath, ran his fingers through his hair and blurted it out so quickly that Thomas barely caught what he said.

"I like you."

Thomas froze. He felt a sweeping motion deep in his stomach, and held his head, having become dizzy with happiness. Newt continued, gaining confidence.

"And not just like a small crush, or anything. I mean, I have been fully into you pretty much since Alby introduced us. I get it if you want to just be friends. I just - I needed you to know."

By now, Newt's face was flushed, and he stopped and focused on his shoes.

Thomas let out a soft laugh, a mix of relief and excitement. His face broke into a giant grin. Newt looked up at him, cringing, and paused.

"You're smiling."

"I like you, too." He said slowly, still grinning.

"Really?" Newt asked in disbelief, as the corners of his mouth turned up into a smile.

"Really." Thomas said firmly, as he moved closer.

The two of them stared into each other's eyes, lit up by firelight. Thomas brushed Newt's hair behind his ear, and Newt gently fit Thomas's mouth to his.

It was a slow, tentative kiss at first. Newt's lips were intoxicating, soft, like rose petals. His tongue grazed Thomas's lower lip and the kiss deepened. The two boys fell into each other and didn't - wouldn't - look back.

After a short while, they broke apart, both short for breath. Newt chuckled and shook his head.

"Bloody hell, Tommy." he whispered shakily. "That was…"

"Amazing." Thomas finished for him. They both started laughing.

"What are we going to do about tomorrow?" Newt asked, resting his head on Thomas's shoulder.

"I don't know. But - sigh - I'm sure we'll figure it out." Thomas said, and they fell asleep in each other's arms.
