Gary holds up his great grandpa's famous invention, the Pokédex; a high-tech encyclopedia as he called it.
Gary is currently lazing around a private hotel room in one of Johto's Pokémon Centers waiting for his reliable squad of cheerleaders to do their makeup so they can start the new day.

Gary talks to the Pokédex, "Dexter, look up Umbreon's poison..."
Ping~
Gary's Pokédex replies, "I found a research paper on 'Umbreon's Poisonous Sweat and Natural Behaviors' by Koga, Prof. Oak, Prof. Elm"

Pokédex "Would you like me to read it?"
Gary "Yes."

(Author's note: Gary's Pokédex has the same voice as Ash's Pokédex in the anime. It's never said, but I'm guessing Gary's Pokédex is also nicknamed Dexter by default, as is Ash's Pokédex.)

The Pokédex reads the text outloud to Gary, "Abstract... Umbreon's poison, which is located in their sweat, has been a notable trait of the species since the original identification and registration of Umbreon in the Pokédex. However, not much research nor first-hand accounts of this poison have been documented thus far. This is what inspired this study. What this research aims to clarify is the way this poison works, and what natural behaviors may be associated with it..."

It's just another day for Gary. Not a day goes by that he doesn't learn something new and potentially cutting-edge about Pokémon. In Viridian's Trainer School, Gary Oak was top of his class in most subjects, which even attracted the attention of the Mayor of Pallet to invest money on him becoming one of the top contenders in the Pokémon League. Although Gary failed to make the top 16 in the League's Indigo Conference representing Kanto, he hasn't given up studying, and he hopes to go further in the Johto Regional Silver Conference next year.

Pokédex
"Brightly colored rings or circles are an early warning system of toxicity in many Pokémon. Including Koffing, Weezing, Beedrill, Ekans, Arbok, Parasect, Spinarak, Ariados, and Umbreon.
For that reason, Umbreon's rings are feared as an instinctual warning to stay away, intensified by the flashing. Umbreon do not seem to be aware of this visual cue however, and flash their rings as they like, whenever they feel like it.

The toxins in Umbreon's sweat contain a paralytic poison that cause muscle weakness, fainting, and full-body paralysis. Of 100 Ratata, 50% had fainted at 20 microlitres or about 40 droplets of sweat.
Currently there is only one known antidote, and it's not included in the cure-all antidote that most trainers pack in their bags.
Paralyz heal is also ineffective against the toxin, despite the Pokétoxin having a paralysis effect it is classified as a poison type. Trainer antidotes intended for Pokémon have shown positive action upon BAD-PSN197 in Pokémon subjects, however limited effect on the other compounds.
The antidote in use today is manufactured by the Pokémed Biological Institute and it was distributed to our team by the trusted Community Dedicated to the Capture of Portable Beasts which any licensed trainer can become a member of. The antidote is specifically made to counteract Umbreon's poison.

When agitated, this Pokémon protects itself by spraying poisonous sweat from its pores. Sweat amounts are highly variable depending on the Pokémon's age, gender, fitness level, genetics, and environmental conditions. Interestingly, during a lunar eclipse when the full moon appears red in the sky Umbreon's aggitation tends to become more aggressive. Poisonings are more frequent on days of lunar eclipse. Research on the effect of moonlight on Umbreon has brought interesting results, especially in the genetic structure and expression of genes. The Pokémon can only evolve from Eevee to Umbreon during the night, and it's genetic structure reforms during evolution with exposure to the moon's rays. For this reason it's called The Moonlight Pokémon."

Gary looks at Umbreon by his side who yawns. They are not a morning Pokémon, that's for sure. They are by definition, "The Moonlight Pokémon".

Pokédex
"Additionally, Umbreon who have recently evolved from Eevee are less aware of their new bodies and may exude poison accidentally as they have yet to learn how to control it. This typically is learnt after 1 lunar cycle. (About 30 days) Although it is significantly less toxic as long as Umbreon remains in a good mood, for example cuddling with their trainers or partaking in good-natured battling."

Gary's Umbreon has only been in it's current form for 3 nights, and tonight will be the 4th night.

Pokédex
"...The poison is spread to their fur by Umbreon rubbing their fur with their paws. Umbreon exhibit a wide range of articulation and motion in their arm joints to be able to reach their back and nape to spread contact poison. This poison deteriorates immediately upon exposure to sunlight. A technique used by trainers who have both Umbreon and it's evolutionary relative, Espeon, is to use Espeon's technique Morning Sun to neutralize Umbreon's poison particularly of rowdy Umbreons like subject "Cupcake" who would rub their poison fur against their owner when they were only mildly inconvenienced, like from waiting 1 hour later for dinner because the Pokémon didn't understand the concept of daylight savings time. This doesn't work if the poison is already in the bloodstream of the victim however."

Geez, just how long does it take to do make-up?
Gary closes his Pokédex, it shuts tight with a satisfying clicking sound.

Gary isn't worried at all about Umbreon's poison sweat, afterall Gary's Umbreon is very well taken care of, cool-headed, and has never once become "aggitated". Gary's Nidoking and Nidoqueen on the other hand, need a firm, intelligent, and quick trainer's hand in order to keep everyone safe.

Tonight, he plans to go out catching Pokémon with Umbreon. After all the shopping, sight-seeing, and fine dining plans they have in Violet City, Johto.

He has heard of Pokémon in Johto who are only found at night and he wants to try his hand at catching these rare night-only Pokémon. Capturing wild Pokémon at nighttime certainly has it's fair share of difficulties, but tonight is a full moon so it'll be easier to see where he's stepping under the brightness of full moonlight, without disturbing the Pokémon with annoying flashlights.

The cheer girls seem to be done with their make-up. In total there are 7 girls, but only 6 are cheerleaders. The other girl is their driver "their chauffeuse" (The feminine form of the french word chauffeur), as chauffeuse she drives the car and escorts everyone to their destination safely and with style. She often wears sunglasses. She is over 18, and the rest of the girls are around middle-school age, 12-15. Older than Gary who is only 11, but he is still considered a responsible adult and able to take care of himself by law in this region of the Pokémon world.
Girl 1 "Hey Gary!"
Chauffeuse "Ready to go?"
Gary "Yep, I've been ready..."

After hanging out around town, and doing some sight-seeing, they venture out far away from the city in their red convertible car so that Gary can catch some night Pokémon.

They explore a region close to the Ruins of Alph, with a mountain range near the ruins visible on the horizon.

They park the car in a dirt lot with some worn-down ruins in view. The chauffeuse driver pushes a button to automatically retract the car roof exterior of the convertible car. With a beep and vrrrrr noise, the mechanical parts move. It breaks the roof in two and folds it to compact into the back trunk. The car roof efficently disappears in less than 5 seconds.
Then what's leftover of the windows automatically rolls down with a Vrrrrrup noise, and then the car beeps that it's done.
Boop boop

The girls get up and stretch after a long car ride. (About 2 hours from Violet City) One girl plops her butt on the car trunk and looks up at the stars, "Woah, we're far from the city! Oh, turn off the car light, I think I see the Milky Way! Ooo~!"

This girl sitting on the back trunk gets a nasty surprise by someone pressing the conversion button to lift the trunk and throw her off. The trunk quickly goes back down since it sensed it hit something.
Girl "Woah! What did ya do that for!? Who did it!?"
There's a lot of yelling, and accusing, but no one fesses up to pushing the button.
Gary "I'm going to get some new friends.", Gary says as he's getting out of the vehicle and gazing at the forest.
The girls all stop and look at him fondly.
Girl 1 "OK! Go go Gary!"
Girl 2 "Good luck! So... what are we gonna do?"
One of the girls motions to the ruins, "Is that Ruins of Alph? Cool."
Girl 4 "Yeah, I wanna check out those creepy ruins over there."
The girls agree to explore the "creepy" ruins while Gary is away.

Gary sends out Umbreon to be his guide through the forest, and to help find wild Pokémon.
Gary "Well, I'm off to catch some nighttime Pokémon."
Girl "OK! Toodles!"

The girls watch Gary and Umbreon walk into the forest. Gary waves a back-handed goodbye.
Girl 1 "Bye! Good luck Gary!"
Girl 2 "He Can Find 'Em, Let's go! Hey, hey!"
Girl 3 "Shhh, hush! Don't scare away the Pokémon...! Geez."
Girl 4 whispers, "P, O, K, E... M, O, N. Woahh yeah..."
Girl 3 says again, "No..."

The girls begin to sing the Johto Poké Rap starting as a dull whisper and then into full-on concert.
"POKÉMON! ...Sunflora Igglybuff, Piloswine Slugma! Crobat Politoad, Noctowl Houndour!"
They giggle whenever someone messes up the song, it's nearly impossible to memorize.

Gary and Umbreon still hear the girls singing, and quickly walk deep into the forest to get away.

The forest is quite impressively wild, unlike many popular, well-worn trainer routes, this area is mostly untouched. Perfect for finding large, formidable Pokémon others have not yet captured. Through the darkness, under the shining full moon the two can see many tree-covered hills, fallen tree trunks, bushes, and caves that Pokémon can hide in.

Spinarak and Ariados are everywhere, and the cries of Hoothoot and Noctowl ring through the dark forest.
Most interestingly here in the foothills near the Ruins of Alph, he sees fleeing herds of Stantler, a Pokémon that was once hunted to near extinction.

Eventually Gary and Umbreon come across an open field in the forest.

Suddenly, the earth rumbles and shakes.
Gary "An earthquake?!"

Umbreon perks it's ears and hears branches snapping,
Umbreon "Um, breon brees! B'eon!", Umbreon says, 'Hey, the trees might fall! C'mon!'
Umbreon bounds to the center of the clearing.
"Ok!", Gary follows his trusty Pokémon running after them.
They stand in the clearing until the shaking slows to a stop.

They see smoke rise up around a mountain on the horizon, it obscures the full moon with a fine haze.
A column of a dark cloud covers almost across half of the sky.

Then something odd happens, the full moon becomes a shade of brilliant blue, caused by the refraction of moonlight through the fine smoke.

Umbreon looks at the bright blue moon. Gary sees Umbreon's glowing rings which are normally yellow change color to a vivid blue color.

Umbreon suddenly cries out, "Grrr broawrrr!", and the fur on it's back stands on end, looking spikey.
Umbreon looks down and it emits a low growl.
Gary "Are you ok?"
He hesitantly steps forward.

Umbreon suddenly leaps at Gary's head and bites his neck, knocking him over. The force of it flings a whirl of autumn leaves up into the air.

Umbreon growls a low, rolling growl. Gary speaks softly as he attempts to talk to Umbreon, "Umbreon, let go..."

Gary realizes the danger of being alone. He slowly reaches for one of his pants pockets, lifting his purple shirt abit, reaching for a Pokémon Poké Ball, as subtle as he can move trying not to rustle the leaves, all without Umbreon noticing.

The sound of the Poké Ball expansion button would alert Umbreon to Gary's intentions though. Another idea comes to him, the Pokémon inside the Poké Balls are able to hear noise from inside their capsules, so they might all come out on their own to save him if he yells for them.

Gary struggles to say it with teeth on his neck, "Ngeh... everyone... come out!"

The explosion of white light scares Umbreon into releasing Gary and it quickly jumps out of the way.

Blastoise, Nidoqueen, Arcanine, Fearow, and even Kingdra the aquatic-only Pokémon, broke out of their Poké Balls without hesitation to save Gary in trouble.

The blue-ringed, glowing Umbreon, which was only just before Gary's cool-headed partner, glares at him with it's familiar red eyes, but now it's black pupils are transformed from small oval slits to round dilated half circles that fills up most of the eye. Just as suddenly as Umbreon had attacked, it bounds away into the forest and disappears through the foliage.

Gary looks down at his dirty, disheveled purple shirt, and sees something near the neckline. He holds his shirt out in shock. A blue, slimy pawprint marks his skin near his neck, it must be Umbreon's poison sweat!
Gary thinks to himself,
Well this is going to be one harsh learning experience,
And he nearly blacks out, but catches himself with a few calm breaths. He takes out a Violet City Gym commerative pocket tissue package from his pants pocket and uses it all to wipe the poison away. The pain makes his eyes water alittle, but he bares through it, wiping it down as close and hard as he can. Underneath the poison, the pawprint has left behind a perfect pawprint-shape of red inflammation where the paw pad was. It's practically glowing red.
Why would you do this, Umbreon?

His Pokémon surround him, and cry out in concern.
Arcanine "Waahrc!" 'Wahh!'
Kingdra "Dewd?" 'Dude you ok?'
Fearow "Fear..." 'I fear he's still in danger.'
Blastoise "Bla blast toise..." 'Well, let's do something!'
Nidoqueen "Nnnn!" 'Yes, let's do something!'

Gary responds, "Alright everyone... Fearow... Arcanine... Nidoqueen... go find the car and the girls."
They nod and take off in different directions, into the sky and into the forest backtracking their scent trail.
Gary continues, "Blastoise... Kingdra... stay and watch out for..."
Gary winces, "Umbreon..."
Kingdra nods, "Dewdra!" 'OK!'
Blastoise looks down, concerned.

Gary knew he had to send them away, instead of riding Fearow or Arcanine to the car as usual. The Pokédex said the poison's main effect is paralysis, and he feels it. He feared he wouldn't have had the strength to hang on.

The paralysis comes on slowly.

Kingdra stands watch, ready to projectile at any danger that wanders by with a well-aimed Hydro Pump.
Blastoise pre-emptively readies it's 2 cannons from it's shell, also ready to unleash a Hydro Pump.

Gary collapses.
Now closer to the ground, he thinks he hears the remnants of the earthquake from before, but it's just the footsteps from Blastoise turning to look at him.

The poison slowly takes greater effect over time.
Gary experiences pain most of all, with paralysis that keeps him from moving, and it's exponential, increasingly more effective every 5 or 10 seconds. Whenever it seems the poison effects have leveled out, it doesn't, it just keeps getting worse. His vision blurs and darkens.

Eventually, Gary's Pokémon find where the girls are.
Fearow finds them first by flying around and seeing flashlights coming from a maze of ruins.

Fearow lands on top of a broken wall in front of them.

Girl "Wahhh! Don't eat me!"
Fearow "Caw!" 'Return to the car!'
Girl "Is that Gary's Fearow?"
Girl 2 "Oh thank-"
Fearow "CAWR!"
They all look at Fearow, "What is it?"
Fearow is abit frustrated, and calls for Gary's Pokémon with a screech, "Fearooooow!", and it flaps it's strong wings creating wind to fly up, intentionally not jumping with it's feet as to not destroy the fragile ruin wall.
Arcanine gets to Fearow's location first and finds the girls, "Bark, bark!", Arcanine is quite a speedracer at 240 miles per hour.
The girls gasp at the sight of Arcanine...
"Why are Gary's Pokémon here?! Did something happen...!?"

They all decide to go find Gary.

The girls discover Gary collapsed in the grass in the forest clearing, wincing in pain.

Girl "Did he get hurt in the earthquake?!"
One of the girls asks him, worried, "What's up?"
Gary "It's just poison... I'm kinda paralyzed... no big deal..."
Girls "POISON!?"
Girl "Ya can't sit up...?"
Gary tries to move, but can't, "Ngh..."

Girl "He can't stand. Or move. I think we gotta carry him to the car...", she tells everyone with sadness in her voice.

Another girl sighs "Ohh... I already twisted my ankle, twice."
They all look at each other.

A girl notices Kingdra, and runs over to Gary and digs into his pockets taking out Poké Balls, "Which one is Kingdra's Poké Ball?"
The other girls don't know, "Uh... back pocket...?"
Gary is paralyzed so it's not like he can return his Pokémon himself.
She finds a tiny ball in his back pocket.
One girl is abit irritated at this, "Well, I never!"
Arcanine sniffs the little Poké Balls.
She places afew Poké Balls on the ground, and taps each of the Ball's buttons to expand it to full size. Then one-by-one, she tries each before a red laser works and returns Kingdra to it's registered ball.
"Got it!"

The girls wonder where Umbreon is.
Girl 1 "Where's Umbreon?"
Girl "Wait a minute, Umbreon is not in any of these balls!"
Girl 2 "Right, we can't leave without Umbreon!"
Gary lifts his eyelids halfway and stammers out, "Umbreon... left this pawprint, it's poisonous. Umbreon has gone crazy...", he looks at the blue moon, "...we gotta get out of here."

Their chauffeuse puts on her sunglasses, "This is serious."
She turns and walks to Arcanine's side.
Chauffeuse "I'll get the car. Wait here for my return."
Girl "But we're in the middle of the forest!?"
Chauffeuse "I know.", she hops on Arcanine which is quite big, but knelt down to a good pat.
Girl "What are you gonna do...?"
Chauffeuse "A manuveur I learned in chauffeur driver school. You'll see.", she makes a hand movement like a thumbs up, but points her pointer up too.
Girl "Oh... what?"
Chauffeuse "No time to waste.", she calls to Arcanine, "Go!" who speeds away carrying her back through the forest to the car.
