Remembrall to Remember

Hermione led her daughter, Rose, into her bedroom. It was a Saturday morning, one week before Rose would be going off to Hogwarts for the first time.

"Now, I'm sure those books are in here somewhere. Why don't you check those boxes on the top shelf?" Hermione suggested, pointing to the open closet. "I'll check the boxes under the bed."

Rose gave her mom a small nod before turning to the closet and reaching up to the highest box, finding that she needed to stand on her tip-toes and even then, she could only just reach the edges of the box with her fingertips.

Hermione kneeled down on the floor and looked around under her bed for her old advance potions textbook that her daughter had asked if she could use for her upcoming school year.

"Ow, what was that?" Rose cried out as something hard dropped onto her head once she was able to move the box a little.

"Rose, " Hermione immediately called out, getting to her feet as Rose bent over to pick up the object.

"This fell on my head," Rose said as she held out a small spherical object.

Hermione couldn't help but gasp; she hadn't seen it in years, and she had almost forgotten about it. "That's my old remembrall, I didn't even know if I still had it," Hermione explained as she took the ball from her daughter, tracing her finger over its gold ring.

"Where did you get it?" Rose asked.

Hermione held it carefully in her hand, moving backwards to sit on the edge of her bed. "My father—your grandfather—bought it for me when I was headed into my second year of Hogwarts."

Hermione remembered it well, her and her parents had arrived in Diagon Alley to get Hermione's school supplies. After getting their money exchanged at Gringotts, they slipped into what looked to be an antique store to break away from the crowd gathering outside the bookstore.

Hermione's parents were quickly pulled away, admiring the furniture and old decor, while Hermione searched for old books that she might like to read.

"Would you look at this!" Hermione heard her dad piped up, zooming back around to peer over her dad's arm. "What is it?"

Hermione looked at the orb her father held up with pale grey smoke floating within it.

"Oh! That's a remembrall. The smoke inside turns red when you've forgotten something," Hermione explained.

Hermione's dad chuckled a little as he tossed the orb in his hand a little "I suppose I haven't forgotten anything, have I? What do you call this? Charms, right?"

Hermione gave a small nod.

"It's quite extraordinary, isn't it?"

The event that took place after with the bookstore and between Mr. Weasley and Mr. Malfoy made her forget about the remembrall until later that night after dinner.

Her dad sat her down in the sitting room along with her mother and handed her a small purple box with a blue ribbon wrapped around it.

"What is this?" Hermione questioned.

"It's a small back-to-school present your father and I picked up for you," Hermione's mother replied.

Hermione smiled as she undid the ribbon and pulled the top of the box off. Inside laid the remembrall.

"It's to help you remember," Hermione's father spoke.

"Remember what?"

"That school isn't just for learning, it's also about having fun. That it's good to have fun once in a while," Hermione's father explained.

Hermione smiled nervously. "I'll try," she murmured, picking the orb up from the box.

"Mom?" Rose spoke hesitantly, noticing a small tear sliding down her mother's cheek. "Are you okay?"

Hermione sniffled a little, wiping her eyes before turning back to her daughter. "Yes, I'm sorry, sweetie. Just an old memory that I thought I'd forgotten," Hermione explained before giving her daughter a small smile. "Hold out your hand for me."

Rose slowly held out her hand, watching as her mother took it in hers.

"I want you to have this," Hermione said as she placed the remembrall in her daughter's hand.

"Why? Didn't grandpa give this to you?"

"Yes, he did, and I know he would want you to have it. To remind you that school isn't all about work and tests and being the best, it's also about having fun. Hogwarts is an amazing place, and you should explore and have fun."

"Can't I do both?" Rose asked.

Hermione let out a small chuckle; Rose was her daughter, that was for sure. "Yes, you can do both."

Rose looked down at the orb, watching as the grey smoke swirled around inside. "I wish I had a chance to meet them," Rose whispered.

Hermione took her daughter's hands and pulled her closer, kissing the top of her daughter's head. "Me too, I know they would have loved you," Hermione said as she embraced Rose in a hug.
