Something about the leering, towering school before her made Eve feel small. Was it the vines slowly making their way to the earth below, or was it the students smoking out front like there was no problem? Tightly gripping the strap of her bag, she took the final steps before wandering past broken metal detectors and into her brand new school.
Perhaps brand new was a bad term to use when there were stains all over the ceiling and actively avoiding gum on the floor was commonplace. The brunette let out a sigh, digging into her sweater pocket and grabbing a hastily folded sheet of paper, her schedule neatly printed on it. Room two-hundred and seven was where her first class would be. Students were already walking through the hallways, so she figured she had time to go to the restroom first.
Of course, the journey there wasn't fun in the least, no one would move out of her way if they were directly in front of her, so she had to avoid everyone herself. How tiring.
The mirror, or lack thereof, was replaced by a piece of paper with large written on print, taped onto the white brick wall.
No more mirrors, use your phone screens.
No more mirrors. Which implies that there were mirrors in the past. Eve gulped, taking out her phone to look at herself as she ran slender fingers through her hair and bangs. Her makeup hadn't smudged, at least one thing was going her way.
A stall door was suddenly slammed open with a singular platform boot, revealing a blue-haired goth girl with her hair tied into a ponytail, bangs framing her face quite nicely. Eve felt her cheeks redden; suddenly she felt very average as the taller girl also took out her phone to adjust the piercing under her bottom lip.
"I like your shoes," The blue-haired girl said, not even looking at her. When had she..?
"Ah, um, thank you. I like your hair..." Eve trailed off shyly, getting her schedule out again.
"You new? What year?"
"Third."
"Want me to take you to your first class? Just tell me the room number."
"Two-hundred and seven..."
"Alright. Come on."
Eve found herself trailing behind the girl, without even knowing her name. They went up some stairs, and right in the middle of the hallway was the room.
"Good luck."
The girl left without another word, leaving Eve to fend for herself. The classroom before her was fairly empty, having only about five students so far, all sitting separately and minding their own business. She figured AP classes might have a few more people, but she wasn't complaining too much.
"Hello! You're Eve, right?"
She nodded in response, clutching her bag a little tighter.
"I hope the transfer from your old school won't be too awful. You've already finished some of this class, haven't you? We're a little behind because of all the school cancellations recently, but, I think we'll be able to catch up," The tanned teacher rambled. "Oh! I'm Mr. Umino. I teach most of the math and science classes here at [Generic] High, so don't be surprised if you see me a few times a day!" he laughed, rubbing the back of his head. "You can sit wherever."
Eve nodded once again, taking a few moments to assess the already present students before moving to find herself a seat. Between all the chatter, more students steadily wandered in, filling the classroom to a more comfortable level than before. She knew how high school students were—even if there was no seating chart, they'd claim seats anyway. She didn't want to accidentally take someone's seat and bother them; it was troublesome and annoying for both parties involved. She decided to choose a seat in front of an albino boy, who looked up at the ceiling with an uninterested gaze while balancing a pencil over his top lip.
The bell rang, startling her out of her thoughts. She'd never seen a person with such extreme albinism before.
"Alright, when I call your name, say whatever."
A few minutes after roll call was completed, another student wandered in, looking disgruntled. The albino looked surprised.
"Did you walk? Shit bro."
The tall, mildly threatening teen made his way to the albino's desk and slammed his fist on it, making Eve jump out of her seat, breaking into a nervous sweat. "Don't pull that shit again."
"H-hey now, sit down, Kakuzu." Eve could already tell Mr. Umino was a total pushover.
"You overslept. I wasn't about to wake your ass up!"
Kakuzu glared daggers at him, then at Eve, who flinched upon eye contact.
"You're in my seat."
"Oh, sorry..." she quickly gathered her things and scrambled to another seat, in front of the albino. Kakuzu set his bag down, huffing in annoyance. He eyed the back of the new girl. She looked too kind, too clean, proper looking to be in this school. Too shy, a pushover, from what he gathered. Normally, no one would move from their seat and would've just told him to fuck off, as they should. It's just how people treated each other there.
The lingering sweet scent of the girl's perfume was subtle, but he only noticed it because the classroom normally smelled musty or like the snacks students were eating at that moment you decided to breathe.
"Cute, isn't she?" Hidan nudged Kakuzu as if the previous scene didn't just occur. He rolled his eyes, looking up to the board to do the questions written down, ignoring him.
Eve surprisingly didn't hear the borderline catcallesque comment from the student behind her, having already finished the questions and looking over her old notes. Mr. Umino already began his lecture, which was thankfully all he had in store for that day.
A few classes later and lunch finally showed its face. Eve chose a table near the end of the cafeteria to settle, taking out her wallet to go to the vending machine.
"Hey."
Eve jumped, looking around for the voice. It was the blue-haired goth girl! "Don't leave your stuff lying around. Especially with bags like these."
"Bags like...these?"
"Expensive. Clearly holding lots of things. It's simply asking to be robbed. I'll watch it if you're just going to the vending machine."
"Oh! Thank you, then. I'll be right back."
The blue-haired goth facepalmed. She was too trusting. The girl was lucky she was actually offering to watch her bags, otherwise, she'd be taking off right about now.
The shorter girl came back with a small canned coffee, to her disgust.
"Black coffee?"
"I drink it all the time," Eve smiled, sitting down. The goth decided she'd sit away from her group this one day.
"Gross. Anyway, I'm Konan."
"Oh. I forgot to ask earlier..."
"What's your name?"
"Eve."
"Adam and Eve?"
"I...suppose."
"If you ever want to come to my table, which is where I'll be starting tomorrow, you can. I'm not going to lie, I've noticed a lot of stares your way. You need to have a group of friends or you'll be hit on by creepy dudes, alright?"
Eve stared at her in slight fear.
"Well, one of my friends already planned to hit on you, that's...um...why I'm over here. You don't want that."
"Oh, who?"
"Actually, he has a couple of classes with you, doesn't he? Well, he's not a bad guy, but...I'm sure you don't want that. Hidan Ayers?"
Konan looked over to her usual table, noticing that Hidan was waving violently to get her attention, ready to yell. Kakuzu hit the side of his head, an orange-haired guy trying to stop both of them from getting into a fight. She held the bridge of her nose between her forefinger and thumb, looking like she was going to explode.
"Sorry about my children."
Eve let out a soft laugh after saying she didn't mind.
"Pack up your stuff, we're coming over there."
Eve almost protested but complied anyway because Konan was nice enough to help the newbie out.
Settling down for what felt like the hundredth time, Eve was welcomed by the laughter and talking amongst the new set of teenagers. One was tall, buff-looking, and had an olive complexion. Konan was sitting between him and a ginger-haired boy, who was eating peas with a spoon. Hidan and Kakuzu were there as well, bickering amongst each other, though it was most likely instigated by the former. A long-haired blonde seemed to be finishing some sort of project for an art class, dirtying his hands with wet clay. In fact, he was the first to look up and notice her presence.
"Oi, you're in my stats class. What're you doing over here?"
"Deidara," Konan eyed him, causing him to back off and continue working on his clay sculpture. "This is Eve. You all won't mind if she sits here, right?" It sounded more like a threat than a question.
"Hey, do you have the answers to the stats homework?" Hidan scooched over to sit next to the small girl, causing her to recoil a bit from the sudden intrusion of space. The scent of his cologne was a bit overwhelming, and she tried her best to just act normal.
"I do...but I—"
"Alright!" He snatched up her binder to her dismay, and he opened it and pulled out the work.
"Kuzu and I will be using this—"
"I already finished the work, you idiot," Kakuzu grumbled, facing away from everyone while eating his lunch. Eve stared at his back, then at the papers that the obnoxious albino was crinkling.
"Please just take a photo..." the brunette muttered half-heartedly. There was already a tear. Eve was about to have one of those as well. Of course, Hidan didn't hear her plea.
"So, you're new here, right?" the ginger asked, a kind smile on his face. "I was new last year too, you'll get used to it pretty quickly."
"You almost got your ass beaten the shit out of the first day here! I remember it like it was yesterday," Hidan recalled, laughing.
"You were encouraging it!"
"So? Hey, you were pretty tough back then too, but you softened up. Pussy."
"Heh. Pussy. Can we call you that now?" The tallest one asked.
"Kisame, don't encourage him," Konan scolded. "Yahiko is only a half-pussy," she gave him a half-hug with one arm. "My half-pussy," she beamed.
Eve giggled. The energy at this school was much more lively than her old one. It almost made her prefer this place within the first day.
"We got another quiet one at the table, Kakuzu has a buddy!" Kisame grinned. Eve gave an obligatory smile, but she could almost feel the anger radiating from Kakuzu's very being as he finished up his meal. She sipped on her canned coffee as he got up to throw his tray out, Hidan quickly trailing behind him to do the same. She had a feeling she wasn't liked too much by him; the glares, the malice in his voice that singular time he spoke to her-it added up.
A granola bar was slid in front of her, and Eve looked in the direction it came from. Konan took her empty coffee can and her own trash. "Eat some real food. You can have that. I hate them."
"Oh, thank you!" The bell rang and the students were dismissed and sent to their next class. Eve hoped to get to know everyone at the table better.
Especially Kakuzu.
