Author's notes:
I am taking the story of Adam Milligan, Sam and Dean's half brother, and turning it on it's head. I'm making the character a girl named Amanda Milligan, who is 16 years old at the beginning of the story. And she isn't killed by the ghoul.
This chapter will contain direct dialogue from the episodes 'Jump the Shark' and 'O Brother, Where Art Thou'.
I do not own any characters from Supernatural and I am not making any money off of this work.
If anyone had told Amanda that her father hunted monsters for a living, She'd have said you were crazy. And if you had told her that her half-brothers were the infamous Winchester brothers, wanted in twelve states on identity theft, desecration of a corpse, and murder, She'd have said you were out of you friggin' mind! But that's exactly who they were! But, before the events of this day, she didn't even know what her father did or that she even had brothers.
Amanda's mother had always told her that if something happened, she should call her father, John Winchester. Her mother had always said that he could help, but she never said why or how. When her mother disappeared and the cops were no closer to finding answers than Amanda was, she felt she had no other options than to call him. Even though she barely knew the man. Even though she hadn't seen or heard from him in years.
She pulled her phone out of her pocket and looked up the number in her contacts that she had hoped she would never have to use. Amanda pushed the call button and held the phone up to her ear with a trembling hand. It seemed to ring forever and just when she was about to hang up, a gruff voice finally answered.
"Hello?", the tentative voice said. Amanda scrunched up her eyes at the voice coming out of the phone. It didn't sound like the voice she remembered.
"Uh, is this John?", a small feminine voice answered back. The voice sounded almost as confused as Dean felt. There was a long pause before she got a reply to her question.
"He can't come to the phone. Can I help you?" This was going in a direction that he didn't really want to go in.
"No no no... I really... I need to talk to John. This is Amanda Milligan. He knows me." Dean closed his eyes, sighed, and ran a hand down his face before speaking the words he always hated saying.
"Well, sorry to be the one to break this to you, sweetheart, but John died more than two years ago." There was a shocked gasp on the other end of the line followed by heavy panting sounds. If Dean didn't know better he would say that she was crying.
"Who is this?", Dean growled. It came out more harshly than he intended it to.
"I'm his daughter", the girl's voice croaked between quiet sobs. Dean stopped breathing and just stared into space. Sam saw the shocked expression on his face and quickly moved to his brother's side.
"Dean?", Sam whispered putting his hand on Dean's shoulder. "Are you OK?" Dean swallowed hard and looked over at his brother with his mouth hanging open.
"I... I don't know, Sam", Dean whispered with his hand over the phone. "Did dad say anything to you about having a daughter?" Sam scrunched his eyes at Dean in confusion for just a moment before his eyes went wide and his mouth dropped open to mirror Dean's. He could only shake his head.
"Hello?", the girl's quiet voice interrupted Dean's thoughts and he turned away from Sam again.
"Oh... uh... sorry", Dean stuttered into the phone. He had no idea what to say or what to do. "Um... look, Amanda... I... uh..." Sam reached over his shoulder and grabbed the phone out of Dean's hand.
"Hey Amanda! This is Sam. The stuttering idiot you were just talking to was my brother Dean. Why don't we meet somewhere so we can talk."
The three children of John Winchester sat in a diner talking about their relationships with John. The brothers finally admitted that they were John's sons and her half-brothers. After Dean put her through all of his monster tests and was satisfied that she wasn't one, they finally got to why Amanda had called in the first place. The disappearance of her mother.
The brothers agreed to help her since the police had no leads, no forced entry, and no fingerprints to go on. Days later, Sam and Dean found Amanda's mother, what was left of her anyway, in a crypt. But the ghoul that killed her met the edge of Dean's machete.
That was nearly seven years ago now. Amanda became a mighty fine hunter. Smart and resourceful, like Sam. Determined and headstrong, like Dean. Even Castiel had to admit that she was a real asset to the brothers and he enjoyed her Dean-like sense of humor. He came to see her as a friend and family. Amanda looked up to Cas almost like a father. He was always there to comfort her when she had nightmares about the ghoul that killed her mother. And he was a good listener when she just need someone to talk to. Even though he was mostly clueless when it came to teenage problems, just being there to lean on was what really mattered to her.
Amanda never left their side. Even when things got truly bad, she never thought about leaving. She couldn't see her life without her brothers or Cas. She stood with them through it all. She stood with them when Sam sacrificed himself to put Lucifer back in the cage, only to be brought back without his soul. She stood with them when Cas thought it was a good idea to cram millions of souls(including Leviathans) into his own body to defeat Raphael, only to let the Leviathan loose on the earth. And now she stands by them while Amara, the sister of God, threatens to destroy the universe.
Sam had been having visions for months about the cage. He was convinced that God was telling him that they needed to talk to Lucifer. That he was the answer to getting rid of Amara for good. Dean was adamant that that was NOT gonna happen. EVER! He was gonna find another way to defeat her without risking Lucifer escaping his prison. Even though Dean knew that the bond he had with her was not going to let him kill her, he wasn't going to take that chance. Sam had convinced Crowley and Rowena to help him speak to Lucifer while Dean and Amanda were investigating a church full of dead bodies.
Crowley, Rowena, and Sam walked down a dim passageway lit by torches while a thunderstorm raged overhead. You feel the trepidation coming off of Crowley in waves. He was seriously questioning his judgement on this one. Why was he allowing this? The last thing he wanted was for Lucifer to get out of his prison. It would certainly mean Crowley's death. He was putting all his faith in the woman who gave birth to him, and she wasn't trustworthy, by any means.
"Flop sweat, sonny?", Rowena said, smirking as she strode down the corridor. "Dread of what's to come?" Crowley glared at the back of her head.
"Can it", Crowley snapped. "Your barbs may amuse your circle of hags. You have no idea what you're tampering with; what Lucifer is capable of." A wide grin spread across Rowena's face at the fear in her son's voice. Crowley only continued to shoot a hateful stare at her back.
"Well dear, if you can't stand the heat, get out of Hell." Rowena was holding back a giggle that was attempting to claw it's way up her throat and out her mouth.
After talking to the parish priest, it was obvious to both Dean and Amanda that Amara was the culprit behind the deaths at the church. But as they walked down the church steps, Dean froze half way down. He looked around for am moment looking confused.
"Dean?", Amanda whispered from behind him. "You OK? Dean jerked his head around, seeming to have forgotten that she was there. The distracted look on his face worried her.
"Uh... yeah!", Dean grunted. "Fine." He started down the stares again, walking toward the hotdog stand on the other side of the street. He started looking around again and Amanda really started to get nervous.
"What's wrong, Dean?" She reached out to lay a hand on his shoulder, but he vanished right before her eyes. Her eyes went wide and her mouth dropped open as all the air was pulled from her lungs. "D-Dean?" Her voice trembled with fear and she looked around, desperately searching for her older brother. She hadn't been this scared since she watched her other brother, Sam, throw himself into the cage. What the hell was happening?
"SHIT!", Amanda whimpered under her breathe. "DEAN!"
