Prologue

Heavy rain kept her wide awake, just like it always did every time before. It wasn't that it scared her, not exactly. It was more like… it made her feel uneasy, but she never understood where this feeling came from. The few times when she could go to sleep during rain, it'd never be for long. She'd wake up due to a nightmare she'd never remember when she was asked to describe it. It frustrated her to no end.

Her covers bunched up as she pulled her legs up to her chest. She wrapped her arms around them and rested her chin on the top of her knees, an adorable pout on her face as she glared at the wall opposite her bed. It had a window on it, in the dead center, and she could see the vicious drops pounding against the glass. The curtains were open only a sliver, but she could still see the liquid pelting the glass as if it was trying to break it down.

"I wish it'd just stop," she mumbled. She was just about to pull the covers up over her head when there was a knock on her bedroom door, and a second later it was opened. She looked towards the door out of instinct, and she let her legs lay flat on her bed at the sight of her brother standing over the threshold.

"... thought you went out," she said after a few seconds. He nodded and came into her room, kicking the door lightly so it'd sink back into the frame as he came to join her.

"Yeah, well the rain kinda ruined all that," he said, half-way chuckling as he did so.

She resisted the urge to arch a brow. He was lying, she could tell that much. She couldn't explain how she knew. She just did. No one was ever able to lie to her, unless she let them think they got away with it. This one time, she'd let him get away with it.

The way he looked at her, the way he smiled at her, she could see it written clear as day all over his face. He was worried for her. She noticed he had a book in his hand, and he glanced down at it when he saw her focus pointed to it. He offered her a sheepish grin and held it up.

"Figured I read to you," he said after a beat. "Help you get to sleep." He looked at the book and thumbed through the pages, seeming to pause at a mark left behind to hold the page. "It's been a while since I last did, anyway."

She felt a smile flash across her face and she nodded, scooting over on her bed in order to make room for him to fit beside her. "Yeah," she said softly, "I'd like that, Buck."

He let her get comfortable under the covers first before he joined her, leaning up against the headboard as she rested her head on her pillow. Tucked into his side, she closed her eyes and listened as he began to read the words from the pages.

It was soothing, comforting, and it drowned out the hammering noise of rain just outside her window. A soft sigh fell from her mouth as she was slowly lulled to sleep.

A low rumble of a thunderstorm caused her to stir, and she slowly sat up in her bed. Blue eyes blinked a few times, and she let her gaze travel over the walls of her room. It took a moment or two to realize she was no longer dreaming, and she was confused for a few seconds when it seemed like her window had suddenly jumped from one wall to a different one. She lifted a hand to her head, burying her fingers in dark locks as she winced when a sharp ache pounded through her skull.

It was only a little reprieve, but it was good enough for her. She pushed her blankets from her and stood up. She looked at the alarm clock beside her bed, realizing it was a little past one in the morning.

Despite knowing she didn't need to be, she was quiet as she left the room, walking down halls that seemed so familiar to her.

She made it to the kitchen, and she finally flipped a light switch. A small source of light filled the room, and she slowly roamed over to the stove. She filled her kettle and set it down so the water could heat up, turning and leaning against the counter as she waited.

It was a big place, and it felt even bigger when there was no one else there.

"Are you certain this is where you wish to be?"

Kagome came to a halt at the top of the stairs, pausing and glancing down a few paces to meet stoic pools of gold. She paused for a second before she nodded, an assured smile flittering across her face.

"Yes," she said after taking a second to respond. "This… The shrine is my home, isn't it?"

Sesshoumaru closed his eyes, breathing a silent sigh as he caught back up to her. "If it feels like that, then yes," he said. "If you remember it as such, then it can't be denied."

She paused behind him as he continued forward, unable to ignore the brief flash of doubt that surged within her.

All her memories were of this place, so why… Why did she doubt them?

It no longer felt much like a home to her, despite what her memories told her. She was here, alone, not a single familiar face within arms reach of her. She opened her eyes, trying her hardest to ignore the sting of tears as they formed in her eyes, her mind straying back to her dream.

By now the warm feeling from it had faded, and it'd been replaced with cold solitude. She didn't remember it, not in the slightest, but it still felt so familiar to her. It felt as if she didn't belong here, not anymore. She might've once before, but now those days were long gone. The moment from her dream felt more like home than anything.

Her kettle let out a loud whistle, and she jumped at the sound. Kagome whirled around, nearly knocking into the counter and hitting the ground when she was so forcibly shaken from her thoughts by the harsh, loud sound right beside her. Her heart slowly returned to a normal pace, and she let out a low sigh, glaring at the kettle as she removed it from the stove.

She quickly fixed herself a mug of tea before settling down at the table. Silence reclaimed the area as she savored her tea, the warm liquid chasing away the cold she felt pricking at her nerves.

Sesshoumaru had told her of her family's passing when he brought her to the shrine. It hurt a bit to learn, but, at the same time, it filled her with an odd sense of serenity. A part of her was accepting of this, the peace of knowing their fate soothing her even through the hurt.

"This life is what I remember," she muttered quietly, "so why do I feel like a stranger in my own home?"

She didn't understand it. For a while, her memories had been reduced to mere fragments, but as time passed, she began to recall the entirety of them. It left her shaken when she thought back to the beginning of her life. She wasn't able to remember it, not anymore. She remembered her time looking for the jewel, but other than that, her memories seemed to just come into existence starting at that point in time.

She no longer remembered her childhood. She no longer remembered friends and family from then.

She remembered Sesshoumaru finding her, in New York of all the places in the world. She remembered his perplexed approach to seeing her again, yet he let her go with him all the same. She discovered as the years went by that she didn't seem to age, or she aged very slowly. She assumed it was because of the jewel, and that was how she'd lived through the years.

"You died in the battle for the jewel," Sesshoumaru's cold voice made her flinch, but she shook her head.

"If that were the case, then I don't think I'd be standing in front of you," she said, ignoring his prior statement. "I'd say reincarnation, but…" she shook her head. "I remember who I am, so maybe not?" she paused her a second, thinking it over a bit more keenly. "Maybe the jewel just transported me somewhere else in order to help me?"

"It's still with you?"

She nodded and patted her chest, where she could feel the jewel's presence. "It's back in my body, but yes," she said after a second. "I can feel it within me."

She shook her head forcefully, clearing that thought from her mind. She downed the rest of her tea and placed her mug in the sink before she opted to head back up to bed. Before she could even start back up the stairs, a knock at the front door caught her attention. Her expression contorted a bit.

Normally Sesshoumaru would come in on his own, and getting a better feel at the aura, she realized it wasn't her demon ally. The aura felt faintly familiar, and she had to catch herself before she fell to her knees upon focusing on it. Her vision blurred, and a name she couldn't remember burned from the back of her head.

The knock came again, this time much more fervent, and she slowly gathered herself back up. She walked to the door, doubting they'd leave if she pretended not to hear them.

Kagome paused in front of the door, resting a palm against the hardwood. The next second, she flicked the outdoor light on. She pulled the door open just enough to peer out, and she saw a man standing on the other side. That face from her dream returned to the front of her mind, bringing a harsh pain as it did.

There was a shift in his aura, and when she looked at his face, she could see the shine of moisture in his eyes. She opened the door all the way, and spared him a curious look.

"Yes?" she said after a few, long seconds. "What can I do for you?"

When he spoke, he didn't answer her question. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded photograph, unfolding it and holding it up for her to see. She felt a surge of pain rush through her head when she easily saw herself in it, albeit a few years younger by the looks of it.

"My name is James Bucky Barnes," he said, and she slowly tore her gaze from the photo and back to him. "I'm your older brother."

C.R: Okay, some information about this story listed below!

Kagome is biologically Bucky's little sister. After her death in the past, her soul ended up getting reborn. The jewel remained with her. Some point after Bucky's presumed death, it reawakens. It won't be a physical thing in the story, but it will be tethered to her soul.
When it awoke, she lost her memories of her life, and she no longer remembers who she was (the memories of looking for the jewel shards in the past becoming the only solid memories she has) Sesshoumaru sensed it when this happened, and she left alongside him. However, it's likely he knows more about her situation that he lets on.

There will be more detail in the story later on about this, however. The story mostly takes place after Bucky's recovered his mindset, but there will be flashbacks.

Pairing:

The ones I'm mainly considering putting her with are Steve or Sam. (But it depends, because I might have a more brotherly type of love from Steve for her, since she's Bucky's sister. I'm not sure yet.)

Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading, and I hope you enjoyed. Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not apologies. (Got a new computer, and I haven't reinstalled the spellchecker I usually use.)
