It all happened so fast, even now Lexie was trying to compute what had happened as she sat next to a biobed.

She had been working a completely normal shift, well almost normal.

For most of it she hadn't spoken a single word to a pacific Engineer, that Engineer being Scotty.

The two of them had an argument, more of a disagreement the night before.

Which had led to the Scotsman not speaking a single word to the young Engineer.

Lexie didn't mean to upset Scotty.

She was just a little ticked off last night, that was all. Lexie didn't mean anything by what she said.

So during her shift she chose to go and apologise to him, to hopefully get him talking to her again.

She soon found him and went to talk to him, but it soon became apparent that Scotty was still a bit annoyed with her.

Scotty had yelled at her a few times before Lexie chose to leave him alone to continue his work in peace.

But as she walked away a stack of crates next to her began to tumble.

Everything then went by so fast.

Lexie heard Scotty cry out her name before she got forcefully shoved to the side. Landing with some force on the ground.

When Lexie looked back, she could only see an arm poking out from under the mass amount of crates.

It was Scotty.

She was now sat next to Scotty while he laid in sick bay, he still hadn't woken up.

"Come on Scotty… Open your eyes…" Lexie whimpered sadly as she held back her tears.

But the Scotsman didn't move.

McCoy had tried to reassure Lexie that he would be fine, but she knew when the Doctor was lying.

She knew exactly how hurt the Engineer was.

Lexie had a gentle hold of Scotty's hand.

"I'm so sorry Scotty, I never should have yelled at you." She whimpered, gently stroking the Scotsman's hand.

Tears were swelling in her eyes, her hands were shaking and her heart was slowly beating.

Just then the door to the room opened and in walked Kirk. A small smile on his face which was clearly forced.

"Hey…"

Lexie turned around, Kirk could instantly see the tears in her eyes.

"How's he doing?"

Lexie turned back to face the Scotsman, "To be honest, I don't know… He still hasn't moved."

Kirk walked over and pulled up a chair next to his young Engineer.

He hated seeing her upset, just as much as he hated seeing his Chief laying in a biobed.

"McCoy told me he's gonna be alright…" Kirk muttered, but Lexie didn't seem convinced.

"He told you that lie too, huh?"

Kirk just blinked, McCoy didn't really tell him that, McCoy had told him the truth.

Lexie wiped a tear from her eye, "I'm not stupid Jim, I know that Scotty may never wake up."

Kirk sighed as he felt a lump grow in his throat, he really just wanted to tell her everything was going to be alright…

But he knew that lying wouldn't do any good.

"You know what the last thing I said to him was…"

Kirk gently shook his head.

"I told him I hated him… I told the man who's been there for me that I hated him…"

Kirk watched as tears poured down her cheeks. He had seen Lexie cry several times since she had joined the crew.

But it never got any easier to watch, Lexie had already been through so much in her life and she had lost so much.

She had already lost her parents so young, Kirk didn't want her to lose the man she saw as a parental figure.

Kirk reached over and placed a hand softly on Lexie's shoulder, "I'm sorry Lex, I'm really…"

Lexie shoved Kirk's hand off, not bothering to look at him. "Please Jim, I want to be alone…"

Kirk wanted to argue, but just nodded before standing up and leaving the room, not before a lonely tear ran down his face.

Lexie was finding it hard to keep her tears at bay, they slowly trickled down her face and silently fell onto the bed.

"I'm sorry for what I said Scotty… I don't hate you, really I don't… I love you…"

That was it, Lexie finally broke down completely.

She rested her head on Scotty's arm, her tears rolled down it before falling to the bed.

"Please wake up… I don't know how I'll cope without you… You've been there for me ever since I got on ship…"

Lexie's words were muffled since she had her face resting on Scotty's arm.

"Please don't leave me… I don't want to be all alone again…"

Suddenly Lexie felt her hand get gently squeezed.

She quickly yanked her head up, did Scotty just squeeze her hand? Or was she imagining it?

Lexie stared at him, her vision was blurred due to the tears.

Once again she felt her hand get squeezed, but this time she saw Scotty's hand move.

"Did he really just move?" Lexie thought to herself.

"Scotty?"

Just then Lexie watched as the Scotsman's eyes fluttered slightly, then they opened a little.

Was he really waking up?

It was only a few seconds before the Scotsman's eyes were completely open, his brown eyes sparkled in the light.

He slowly turned his head to see Lexie, a small smile appeared on his face.

"Hello there Lass…"

Lexie could feel tears flooding down her face, but she couldn't care.

"Scotty! You're alright!" She cried as she lunged for him, wrapping her arms around him gently.

"I'm sorry for what I said Scotty, I didn't mean any of it, I was just mad… I don't hate you, really I don't."

Lexie felt Scotty's arms wrap around her, gently hugging her.

"It's alright Lexie, I'm sorry for what I said too."

Scotty had tears in his eyes as he pushed Lexie away gently.

"Are you alright? You didn't get hurt did you?" He asked.

Lexie just stared at him, was he seriously asking her that? He was the one who was on deaths door.

"I'm fine, thanks to you Scotty. You saved me, but why?"

Scotty smiled at her softly, "I wasn't going to stand by and watch you get hurt now was I."

But she was still crying, "Why are you still crying Lex? I'm fine, really I am."

Lexie muttered something, but Scotty couldn't understand it, so he asked her to repeat herself.

"I thought I was going to lose you… I couldn't bare that… You're my family…"

She whimpered, just then she felt a hand on her cheek.

"I'm not going to leave you Lexie, ever. I won't put you through that pain, I'm here to stay."

Just then McCoy, Kirk, and Spock rushed into the room.

"Lexie, we heard you yelling…" Kirk didn't finish what he was saying since he saw that Scotty was awake.

Scotty turned and smiled at the men.

"Hello lads, nice of you to drop by."

McCoy stared blankly at him, "When the bloody hell did you wake up?" He asked as he walked over to the bed, tricorder in hand.

"Not that long ago Leonard."

McCoy rolled his eyes as he scanned the Scotsman over, he was amazed at what his tricorder told him.

"I don't understand how but… You're going to make a full recovery, clearly all you needed was time."

Scotty gave McCoy a sneaky wink, "What can I say Doc, it's hard to keep a Scotsman down."

Kirk wiped a tear from his eyes and saw Spock slightly smiling, clearly even the Vulcan was happy.

"I'm just glad to have you back Scotty, don't know what we would do without you."

"You would probably destroy the ship in a matter of seconds Jim."

Spock then placed his hands behind his back, "I am glad to hear that you will make a full recovery Mr Scott."

"Thank you Mr Spock, so am I."

McCoy then wandered back over to Kirk and Spock, "Come on you two, lets give them a bit of space."

Spock nodded and swiftly left the room, but Kirk just stared blankly at the CMO.

"Why Bones?"

"Because I said so Jim, now get moving before I hypo you in the neck."

Seemed that was all Kirk needed to hear since he quickly left the room, not before he gave Lexie a little wink.

Lexie turned back and smiled at Scotty, who simply smiled back.

"Scotty?"

"Yes lass?"

"Please don't scare me like that again."

Scotty chuckled as he rested his hand on Lexie's.

"I won't lass, I promise."

Lexie once again hugged him tightly.

"Ouch, not so hard Lex please, I'm still sore."

Lexie loosened her grip, "Sorry Scotty."

"It's alright, I know you didn't mean it."

Scotty slowly sat up and hugged Lexie back.

"I love you Scotty…" Lexie whispered into Scotty's ear, which made his cheeks blush slightly.

He tightened his grip of her ever so slightly before whispering something back.

"I love you too Lexie… And nothing will ever change that."
