April 10th, 1821
The night rides in on a horse of pure midnight velvet, beckoned by the stars under the glow of a full moon. The lingering light is obliterated by the rapidly falling night. The ones clear sky now transforms into a vast expanse of jet-black that engulfs the surroundings. A canopy of luminous stars materialized amongst the town. Some were dull, merely flickering into existence every now and then, but there is an adequate amount of shimmering stars to illuminate the shadowy atmosphere.
Cold, anxious and exhausted, Prudence tirelessly sits down besides a glistening lake. With tears swarming her eyes, she raises her head to gaze up at the full moon as the cold night's wind etches against her skin.
Moments later it begins to rain. The rain removes the illusion of her eyes. With sight the young witch almost feels not alone. She is one of many in the world and the world is full of interesting things to see, to touch, to feel, to keep her mind anchored in time and space. But as the droplets of rain whirled around her in an angry vortex, she felt as alone as she could possibly feel, as alone as she would be in the bleakness of space and cold. She reaches out her hand to wipe away the water from her face, but that does no good as the rain continues falling from the sky, faster and louder, but all she could do is sit there. All her heart can do is beat warm blood around her veins in a hope that the storm will end, but she remembers her fate, she remembers that this will never end, she remembers her time will never end. She was cursed, cursed to live out her life without death until the end of time, whenever that may be.
~Flashback: One year ago~
Prudence stands anxiously in the middle of a dim room lit with candles, while surrounded by the rest of the Bennett coven. She clenches her fist tightly and looks straight ahead at the wall in-front of her trying to compose herself of what was to happen next.
The deadly feeling that overcame the room was unexplainable, and the heavy silence between each and every of the all so powerful witches tipped it just over the edge. It hung in the air like the suspended moment before a falling glass shatters on the ground. It felt like a ticking time-bomb, a gaping void needing to be filled with sounds, words, anything to make the moment less tense than it already was. Fragments of thoughts, splinters of words and droplets of quietness spun into a rapid jumble, which shifted in its core and shook up the room that left the young 18 year-old witch feeling completely breathless.
"Prudence"... She heard the hoarse voice from her aunt, Beatrice speak up quickly causing her to tense up. Beatrice is the leader of their coven.
"Aunt Beatrice-"
"Quiet! I wasn't done talking" Beatrice quickly interrupted before she could utter another word. She turned to look at each and every one of the Bennett witches in the room, before landing her gaze back at the young timid witch. "Your actions were reckless and selfish. It almost put an end to this coven after everything we did to save it... what do you have to say for yourself?".
Un-clenching her fist, Prudence slowly lifted her head back up to face her, before she speaks up. "My mother didn't deserve to die-".
"Your mother sacrificed herself to save this coven. She offered to give her life to make sure that the Bennett bloodline will live on for generations!" Beatrice snapped, interrupting her once again, before she could get another word in. "You are weak, almost powerless even, so what made you think that you had the strength to perform a forbidden spell such as that? you were put everyone in danger!".
"I know that death is inevitable, but why did it have to be her?" Prudence muttered in a morose tone. "She was all that I had left. You were her older sister, it was your job to protect her but you took her away from me. You let this happen, all of you".
Heavy silence brewed in the air once again as Beatrice slowly took a step towards her. "Did you think that I wanted my younger sister to die, for her to be taken away from you, her daughter?" she questioned.
"Then why couldn't it have been you..." Prudence shot her a death glare, and was about to walk out the room, but quickly stops dead in her tracks as the rest of the coven begins to chant an unusual spell. She furrows her brows bewilderingly as a look of confusion flashed through her face. Prudence watches as Beatrice slowly holds her hands up, as the chanting gets louder and louder.
"Your actions almost cost the future of this coven and it cannot go unpunished. Someday you will understand the sacrifices your mother had to make, someday you will understand how important the Bennett coven is, someday you will understand everything, even if it takes you all of eternity".
As she finishes her sentence, the young witch immediately feels a sinking feeling in her chest. She quickly holds onto herself to stop herself from stumbling back and falling onto the floor as her vision swims in-front of her rapidly causing her to swirm in agony. "What- what are you doing to me?" she desperately questions, turning to look at each of them as her breathing becomes quicker. "What are you doing to me?!" she asks again this time with fear evident in her eyes. As the chanting stops she didn't need to ask again, because she immediately felt it, she immediately felt the curse bestowed upon her and it was a feeling she would never forget.
~End of Flashback~
The rain had stopped, leaving an even colder and damp aura in the air, but Prudence was still sat beside the lake, gazing ahead.
If she wasn't cursed with immortality, she would've already tried to jump in the lake and drown in hopes of killing herself, but it would be pointless. This past year was spent with her trying new ways to put an end to her life, but it was no use as she would always come back to life each and every time. The only immortal creatures she knew of and they were; as her mother used to tell her, the witches enemies, and she never would've imagined that she would eventually live out the same fate as them. She's spent the past year with a mix of different emotions, but most of all anger and fear. Anger directed towards her family for banishing and cursing her and fear of what was to come as she could no longer die. Before her mother was alive, she always held her own and thought her everything she needed to know about her life, but now, realizing that she may never see her mother again, she knew that it is time to hold her own hand and navigate the world herself, but after all she is only a 19 year old girl, and am in-experienced witch for that matter.
After a long while of sitting by herself, she slowly gets up, deciding to get going, as she never stayed in the same place each night.
Not bothering with her wet clothes, she picks up her bag and swings it behind her back. She then shuts her eyes and takes a deep breath, before turning around to walk off with an empty void in her mind.
Several minutes later, she heard sounds coming from outside the woods. Clutching onto her bag tightly, she quickly hid behind a tree, before peeking out to see four people; three men and one woman stood beside what looked to be their carriage. As she spotted one of them eating out the flesh of a human, she quickly covered her mouth, desperately trying hard not to make a sound. Her heart begins to beat rapidly as it didn't take her that long to realize that they are vampires. 'the witches enemies' as her mother used to call them. At that moment she felt terrified, but she made sure not to make a single sound.
"What are we still doing here? isn't it about time we get out of this bloody town?" she heard one of them speak, and she slowly peaked her head further to get a better look.
"Patience, Kol, besides our dear brother's Finn, coffin is still stored away, we can't leave without it" the vampire with long brown hair spoke up, before handing him a handkerchief to clean up the blood from his mouth.
"You know I don't know why we bother going anywhere when we have a perfectly fine home in New Orleans" the woman groaned, before going to hop of the carriage.
"Get over it, Rebekah, we have business to take care of".
Prudence couldn't help but gawk at the blonde vampire as he slowly walked back and forth. He had such a demanding and frightening presence, one that would make anyone instantly terrified at the sight of him, but she still couldn't help but fixate her eyes on him, almost as if she couldn't look away.
"Get over yourself, Nik, you just have to drag us with you along wherever you go" Rebekah hissed irritatingly.
As she heard the name 'Niklaus' more fear begins to rise inside her. It couldn't be the same Niklaus that her mother along with the rest of her coven had warned out. The dangerous hybrid that brought hell and terror wherever he went to and caused destruction to anyone who dares cross his way. With her hands still placed over her mouth, the timid witch swallowed a big gulp, trying to get rid of the huge lump stuck in her throat. She slowly turned around to slowly tip-toe away, but the second she did, she was immediately met face to face with Niklaus, causing her to stumble back and fall to the floor in fear.
"Well... who do we have here" he muttered in his thick British accent.
She was too scared to even speak.
Prudence turned to look back to at the people who she assumed to be his family as they slowly gathered around her, but she slowly and hesitantly turned her attention back to Niklaus. She watches as he slowly crouches down and holds out his hand for her and she couldn't believe her eyes. All the stories that she's heard about him while growing up, and she couldn't believe that she's face to face with him at this very moment. He is undoubtedly the most dangerous creature to walk the earth, and here he is offering his hand out to her, while gazing deeply into her eyes almost as if she is a rare creature he is fascinated by.
"Please... let me go" Prudence pleaded, as she held a heavy-eye contact with him.
"Oh for God's sake, Nik can't you see you're scaring the poor girl" Rebekah uttered from behind her.
"That would be the case dear sister if she was just any normal girl" he drifted off, going to place his hand on her shoulder. "But, she's in-fact a witch" he muttered with a devilish smirk on his face, and her eyes slowly widened at how he is easily able to tell.
Moments later, Prudence narrowed her eyes over to Elijah who slowly walked over to stand beside Niklaus. She stared up at the both of them, before finding the courage to get up on her own.
"I'm Elijah, that's Kol, Rebekah and of course you've met Niklaus. I promise, we won't hurt you" he introduced himself and everyone, and before he could hold out his hand for her to shake, he was quickly stopped by Klaus.
"Oh dear brother, always quite the charmer" Klaus patted him on his shoulder and rolled his eyes, before going to stop towards the young witch. He stared down at her, trying to understand her better, but she must of noticed, because she instantly became like a closed book. "What is your name, sweetheart?" he asked.
"Prudence" she answered quietly, returning his deep gaze.
"Well Prudence... I think there's a way we can both help each other" said Klaus.
"Please, just let me go. I don't want any trouble, I'm just trying to get into the next town" she uttered nervously, while lowering her head.
Klaus slowly circled around her, before speaking up. "Well see that's the problem, you're a witch, not only that but you're a black woman, and the next town that you're about to walk into aren't too fond of your kind" he explained, standing beside her to whisper down in her ear, which sent shivers down her spine. "My siblings and I are making our way back to our home in New Orleans and we need a spell that we need doing there and that's where you come in. You help us and we protect you" he spoke, making his way to stand in-front of her.
She wanted to say no, she wanted to tell him to just let her go one time, but she knew that nobody had ever refused Klaus Mikaelson before and she wasn't about to be the first.
