This is the offering to Kadam Week 2017 prompt 4: one of them injuring himself in a stupid way and how the other reacts
Adam was laying there on the floor trying to figure out how to move and go on with the rest of his day without scaring his niece, and not do more damage than he already did...
Maybe in hindsight attempting to do a cartwheel under the supervision of a twelve year old was not one of the smartest things he has ever done...
Doing it inside the house, when he was significantly taller than his niece, came soon after in that list of not so smart things to do...
And he promised himself, should someone else ever trying to disparaging cheerleading as nothing more than glorified child play, he promised himself he'd be the greatest advocate against that line of thinking...
Adam pushed himself to smile reassuringly at her when Amy's worried face came into his line of vision instead of their living room's ceiling and she asked concerned "Uncle are you ok?"
He steadied his voice as he answered calmly "But of course Amy, as old folks sometimes do, I just got lost in thoughts for a moment. But now you came in front of my eyes and there's nothing more important."
His wiggling eyebrows had the desired effect of making the girl chuckle and blush prettily...
Adam raised from the floor and proceeded to get up and pretend nothing was wrong.
Which, always in hindsight, was probably his third strike that day...
But he knew that if his brother in law realised just how incident prone Adam could be, and only because he was amusing their daughter, then there were good chances Amy wouldn't be allowed in his care without supervision for ages...
Probably until the moment when she would no longer be interested in spending time with her uncle...
So Adam soldiered through the pain, and simply resolved himself to keep everything low profile and pretend nothing was wrong...
Which would have worked... Had Kurt not been part of today's plans after returning Amy to her parents...
Adam contemplated indulging adding 'allowing Kurt to arrive a little early on because Amy was super curious about the pretty boy in her uncle's phone' to the list of today's bad decisions... But he could never have the heart to consider anything involving Kurt a bad decision.
After giving Adam a quick hello kiss, Kurt became the main centre of Amy's interest and kept her entertained, Adam's thought of how good his partner was for him simply were confirmed, after all Kurt was demonstrating how good he was with the girl.
And daydreams of them being parents together were starting to dance in front of his eyes. They had not yet discussed it, not in the concrete, but today's injury had made him aware they both were ageing... What if they soon wouldn't be able to be there and do this same kind of stupid things with their kids?
He wanted to be involved, he wanted to be able to lift them from the floor and play planes, he wanted to be able to do cartwheel together and manage to keep doing it until their kids would inevitably leave for college...
And at the same time, they were both in a position where their career was still going on strong, it was such a load of thoughts and things to consider…
And all of those things had to be pushed to the back of his mind, especially seeing the raised questioning eyebrow Kurt sent his way, while he still managed to keep Amy distracted for longer.
When the girl went briefly to the other room, to pick up something from her backpack, Kurt came directly in front of him and was probably able to read the uneasiness in his face.
Kurt looked at him once more with pressed lips and said in a low voice so it wouldn't carry on "You look stiff and in pain. I'll keep Amy distracted but please go take something for it so that by the time we'll be able to check how it's going, you won't be in so much pain that it'll take you twice the amount of time to heal up... "
Kurt was taking a small breath but anything else he might have wanted to say got promptly silenced by Amy's enthusiastic "Kurt Kurt I've found it, now we can do it?"
Adam could appreciate how good of an actor his partner truly was, no trace of worry on his face as he smiled at Amy before saying with just as much enthusiasm
"That's so perfect Amy we'll make you the prettiest girl walking into the room and I'll teach you how to do it even when you're home, in fact let me tell you a secret for a bouncy ponytail is all in how tight you tie your elastic, See like this"
Kurt was explaining the fashion trick as if it was the biggest secret in this world, and he was entrusting Amy with it. Unknowingly making Amy growing fonder and fonder of Adam's partner...
To the point that when Adam's sister came to pick Amy up her parting words were "Uncle you can keep Kurt until I'm all grown up, Kurt please wait for me, I promise to grow up fast enough so you won't have to wait too much for me...
Kurt smiled one of his most charming smiles and simply answered kindly "Oh sweetie don't rush your growing up, it will come at its own pace and it'll be all right… And I already love you, just as much as your uncle does" he then winked at her and asked mischievously "Do you remember how it's done?"
When the girl giggled and nodded Kurt blew her a kiss. She then mimicked catching it with both hands and placed it on her cheek, before returning the gesture. Kurt copied her move finishing it by creating a heart with his fingers.
The result was a little girl bouncing happy and Adam's sister raising an eyebrow amused before quipping "I see how things are Kurt, you're not happy with charming just my baby brother, you are planning on charming the whole family even before making an honest man out of my brother.. That's very smooth man, I can agree with the tactic butter up the in laws first then make sure your partner has no eyes but for yourself... Though you obtained that already we can all see how far gone Adam is…"
She then threw a knowing glance in Adam's direction, and he had the sinking feeling that Alisha too had seen he was not in top notch condition…
As she offered a small small, a flash of worry passed in her eyes. Before leaving she said "Kurt you'll take care of Adam while we're not here yes?"
At that Kurt simply nodded and came by his side and placed a hand exactly on the shoulder Adam had in all likelihood strained.
Adam offer a slightly tight smile as well and waved goodbye "We'll see you any time you need, if we're not busy with work it is always a pleasure to have miss Amy keeping an eye on me"
As favourite uncle he winked and was graced with a happy smile and bouncy wave as the two ladies left the apartment.
Once alone Kurt zeroed on him and asked "Ok where are you hurt and what did you do to get it?"
with a sheepish smile Adam said softly "I might or might not have sprained my shoulder, Amy was teaching me how to do a cartwheel ..."
Kurt groaned as he shook his head pinching his nose "And of course you thought it was a good idea doing it inside and without even moving the furniture, hmmm?"
Adam flinched involuntary, because said it that way, it did sound really dumb..."It didn't look that difficult when she did it?"
Kurt scowled, "you didn't consider that almost nine inches of difference in height would make it such a big deal?"
Adam shook his head even if he knew it wasn't needed "I don't think I had considered a lot of things..."
Kurt snorted "I can guess, come on here let me see"
Going for humour Adam quipped teasingly "I'm sure it's not that bad, not if you're already focused on getting me out of my clothes..."
When Kurt swatted the back of his hand on Adam's chest, he knew he was lucky his partner was being very gentle.
Adam turned and presented his swollen shoulder. The noncommittal hum the sight produced from Kurt, and the soreness present in the injured part were making Adam nervous.
Kurt expertly poked the points where it did hurt the most and Adam not expecting the firm touch yelped in pain.
Kurt solemnly offered his verdict "It's not as bad as it could have been still you're correct it is a sprain. So we're going to try to do what you should have done from the beginning."
He went to take a cold compress and some pain relief from the bathroom and helped Adam take them before putting the compress on the sore muscle, then Kurt redirected both of them toward the couch where he arranged the pillows to keep Adam's shoulder at rest.
"Next time you want to adventure in stunts feats, please call me over before you attempt them?"
Adam hummed softly as the ice was starting to relieve the pain. He nodded with eyes half closed under Kurt's skilled administration. Kurt's fingers were running soothing circles on Adam's scalp "You should come and live with me, isn't your lease almost up? You could keep a better eye on me… If I do tell you though you would help, right?"
Kurt chuckled softly "Indeed that could be convenient, we can talk more on it when we're both in a clearer state of mind, and yes if you do ask first, chances are I might even know how to teach you how to do the stunt properly... Did you know that I used to be a cheerleader in high school?"
Adam's eyes popped open his mouth forming a surprised o "How come I never heard it before nor seen pictures of it?"
Kurt giggled in Adam's ear as he curled next to Adam to rest with him "Because there're no pictures of it that I know of, only a video that passed on the local television back in the day... I think dad had it recorded or someone else recorded it for him and gave it to him, I'm not entirely sure... But I'm pretty sure that if you ask for it nicely, you might even get a copy as a wedding gift..."
As the meds started to kick in and knocking him out Adam focused on their future, and on the fact that Kurt seemed willing to live together, and one day getting married...
