It was the morning peak for Musutafu, Japan. The City of Musutafu is known as a place where any type of crime can place, and when there was a crime, heroes were inbound. Villains and Heroes go battle toe-to-toe, or in this case, "quirk-to-quirk" fighting off in formidable battles to achieve peace in the city. Kids go to school dreaming about one day becoming a pro-hero to save lives and putting smiles on people's faces, but there's always a downside.
If you have a quirk or not, you're still killable. You can't ever escape the hands of death. You'll have to leave this world and there's nothing you can do about it.
Pro-heroes put their lives on the line to protect us, no matter what the situation might be. Whether it may be a fire, a bullet, or even a man-slaughtering death machine. It's a substantial fight they have to make, but in the end, they'll always triumph. Like the retired hero, All-Might: he was the true meaning of a pro-hero—no—not a pro… A genuine hero. Putting their strength into everything they've got to succeed in battle.
Some people have it easy to prove to themselves that they can be a hero, while others have to start from the bottom and climb their way up the obstacles standing in their way to be #1.
After all, no one said that being a hero was an undemanding job.
Chapter 1: Entering A New Den?
MONDAY
7:30 AM
KYOKI POV
It was the crack of dawn. It was still pretty early, but you could hear the city get more lively. The hero decorations around my room connected in a well way as the light from the sun radiated my room, giving it a more lively aura. I yawned, rubbed my eyes, and arose from my bed. I was still pretty drowsy from waking up; all night I was up thinking about starting my first day in Japan's best hero high school: UA High. UA High is the most famous and best-known high school that few people rarely get into. Heroes like All-Might and Endeavor, and more amazing heroes, that became legendary heroes today because of this school. Now, I thrive to the best to make a good impression and make her proud.
I walk to the bathroom to fix up my face to get ready for the day. I grab my toothbrush and brush my teeth, especially the 4 silver fangs in my mouth. Next, I grabbed my comb and brushed out my white hair and my fur on my tail. Yes, you've heard it right. Forgot to tell you, I'm part wolf as well. That's my quirk. I have the powers and abilities of a wolf. My 4 silver fangs allow me to use these special wolf-like abilities. I only have small wolf-like features on my body, though. Like how I have a tail, fangs, and ears are on top of my head.
When I got done cleaning up myself, I put on the school's uniform. It was kinda hard for me to do since I have a tail and all, but luckily they were designed perfectly just for me. I then head back to my room and see two bracelets on my nightstand: a pink one that belongs to my mother and a silver one that she gave me for my 6th birthday. They both show an emblem of a wolf's fangs. I stare at the two objects, remembering their origin. They both symbolize something important to me: strength and guidance. I sighed and then grabbed the bracelets and attached them to my wrist.
Next, I head to the kitchen and see breakfast made for me none other than my grandma: Grandma Uchu, a half-wolf, and my caretaker. "Ah, good morning, dear", said Uchu, cleaning the dishes from the breakfast she made. She was quite small with a silver tail (that was almost silver), and gray hair on top of her head, along with her wolf-like ears, standing on top of them.
"Good morning, grandma", I said, giving her a morning smile. "How did you sleep?"
"I should ask you that question. It is your first day at the famous and best hero high school in Japan," stated Uchu, continuing the dishes.
I sit down at the table and prepare to eat. "Well, to be honest — I'm going to a school where students train and learn to become the best heroes they can be, so I'm kinda nervous, I guess. Not only that, I'll be probably meeting some awesome pro-heroes there." Grandma turned and looked back at me.
"Hon, you'll be fine. Just talking about this reminds me of the time when your mother had the same reaction as you when she was nervous about heading to UA." Grandma chuckled. "I'll never forget the words that came out of her mouth when she told me."
I stopped eating for a moment to hear the words that just exited her mouth, and my mood suddenly changed. Hearing anything about my mother brings a tear deeper into my heart; she was even on the road to becoming one of the best-ranked heroes, but she died before she sought to let that dream come true.
"Oh… right…" I said, putting my fork down.
Grandma saw my reaction when she brought up her topic and turned back around to prepare my lunch. Ever since that incident happened with my mother, things have fallen apart. I lost my dad to suicide because of her death. It was too much for him to handle alone. Even with his quirk, he was still weak. Before he shot himself, he always told me that it was all "my fault" that she died, and he wished he would've taken me instead.
At 10, Grandma took me in for 6 years, caring for me, providing for me, and loving me nonstop. She was always there when I needed her, and I'm grateful to have her.
"Listen, dear, your mother was the strongest woman I've ever raised; she'd be proud of you if she saw what you accomplished the last few years," said the old wolf-lady, packing my lunch.
"Here, you go, dear. I've picked up a few of your favorite dog treats you like for dessert for school, you'll never know how much energy you'll be needing today." She placed the bag in front of me and scratched behind my ears.
"Thanks, Grandma."
"Make me proud today, Kyoki," said Uchu.
I got up from the table, stuffed my lunch in my backpack, and headed to the door; grabbing the door handle. "Thanks again, I'll be home soon to help clean up, ok?" I said, looking back at my caretaker. She nodded her head in agreement.
"I love you, Grandma."
"I love you too, dear."
And with that, I was on my way to the best hero school in Japan: UA High. As the door hinges ceased movement, the apartment became silent.
Uchu then walked over to the counter, opened the drawer, and pulled out a photo of her daughter when she was first starting UA. The picture showed Kyoki's mom in her UA uniform. "Nozomi — please watch out for your son today and make sure you're watching him always," concluded Grandma, giving a smile afterward.
8:20 AM
TOMO STREET
The morning started up for the day. People were on their way to work in their cars, holding their kids in their grasp. Shops opened up and the noise of the city rose. Kyoki walked along with the patterned concrete standing beneath him, clutching his backpack straps as demented thoughts ran through his mind.
Will my new classmates like me? Is what I'm doing the right thing? Should I just run away and hide for the rest of the day? Will I make my mother proud?
So many questions, yet with little to no answers. Kyoki sighed, then reached for his phone in his pocket to check the time. He still had enough time to pick up a quick morning snack before school started. "Well, I have time to head down to the shops for a while."
He jogged down the street, avoiding colliding with people. It took him a few minutes to reach the place, but he'd finally reach the shop. He looked up, and the sign read: "YOSUKE SNACKS"
As the young wolf proceeded into the building, he could see a man sweeping up trash in a pile. He had on a yellow shirt with a black design in the middle that says: "YOSUKE SNACKS". "Ah, Kyoki, my boy", said Yosuke. "Good morning."
Kyoki smiled back, signaling a wave in response. The shop was organized well, and Yosuke liked to keep it that way. Kyoki was one of Yosuke's loyal customers. He would often throw him discounts and sometimes give him free snacks. Kyoki didn't mind paying for some of the stuff he wanted, but who can say no to a free offer.
"Look who's all dolled up for today, what's the occasion," said Yosuke. Kyoki blushed.
"Today's my 1st day at UA High, and I'm pretty nervous, to be honest," commented Kyoki.
"Eh, kid, you'll be fine. I've known you for quite some time now — you're a tough kid. Remember that," said Yosuke.
"Thanks."
"So, I'm guessing you want the dog biscuits today, huh?" said the store owner, reaching for the treat.
"Yes, lemme, just get the money for it," said Kyoki, digging in his pockets.
"Eh, kid, don't worry about it, take it for free. I'll make an exception since it's your first day at that popular hero school. You might use your little wolf-quirk a lot and you need as much energy as you can," stated Yosuke, handing the snack to Kyoki.
Kyoki reached over the counter and grabbed the snacks. "Thank you, sir," said the white-haired wolf boy.
"Anytime kiddo," spoke the owner.
Kyoki took out his phone once again to check the time. When he realized what the time was, his pupil-silver-eyes widened. Time read:
8:40 AM
"Oh my gosh, I'm almost late for school!" yelled Kyoki. He quickly stuffed his snack into his bag and headed for the door. "Thank you, sir, once again." He then exited the shop, running for dear life to make it into the UA doors in time.
Yosuke chuckled. "Do well today, kid."
Kyoki POV
Crap. How could I be this late, almost? School starts at 9:00, and I didn't even make it halfway across town to get there. To make matters worse, I didn't even receive my schedule for my classes, yet. And I still have to pick up my hero costume, which is taking up more of my time.
Today wasn't going out as I planned it to be. All I have to do is keep running.
I try to avoid bumping into people as much as I can. It took me all of my energy and strength to make it through the doors in time. At the speed I'm going now, there's no way I could make it in time. I decided the best way to reach the school in time was to catch the bus. But knowing how packed the bus stop is maybe, I should run to the school. It wasn't the best idea, but if it took me to school on time, then I'm not complaining. This wasn't turning out how I'd thought I'd be.
"Well, here goes nothing," I said, as I took off running.
I ran full speed towards the school, trying my best to avoid colliding with people on my way there. Thanks to my quirk, which allows me to have a good lung capacity, I don't run out of breath running so easily, plus my wolf speed, which also allows me to run faster. I try to keep my uniform clean without scuffing out my shoes while running. I kept on running until I reached the UA Barrier, which allows people who don't go to UA to not trespass, but, somehow, the news will still push their way to get an interview.
After I reached the barrier, I stopped to catch my breath. I've been running for minutes, which felt like hours, sorta. I burned out my legs and they felt so jelly-like. If someone was to host a jello baking contest, my legs would win 1st place.
"This has been a crazy morning." I pulled out his phone to check the time.
8:50 AM
I sighed in relief. After all, I had done to be here on time, I finally made it. My dream now awaited this barrier. I took my first step onto UA ground, admiring the scenery that unfolded in front of me. I see other students walking towards the school, in their uniforms, talking to their friends. Over 100+ students are here, training to be the best future heroes they might be.
"Well…" said I, as I took a deep breath. "Here goes nothing."
I entered the school with nothing but happiness, with a bit of nerve, but overall happiness. For the first time in a while. As I continued to walk, my tail wagged. Certain people glanced at me, but I continued walking towards the doors. Inside, it filled the corridor with students all over the place. When I walked through the hall, my mind drifted to the well-constructed building I was standing in. It felt like a real superhero high school here.
"Ok, that's enough sightseeing. Where is the guidance counselor's office?" I said, getting my map instructions from the school. As I skimmed the map, everything on it looked confusing. It was very hard to spot anything or know where anything was.
Crap.
I had no choice but to ask one student for directions to get there. I gulped as sweat slid down my face. "Here goes…"
Within each step I take, I could feel eyes dawn upon me. Some people didn't care, but some still looked at me, anyway.
God, when's an invisibility quirk when you need one.
As I kept walking to find someone, I accidentally bumped into this one girl who was carrying books, causing them to fall. I quickly picked up her books for her.
"Oh, my gosh! I am so sorry, I should've watched where I was going and-"
"Well, look who it is…" said the mysterious girl standing in front of me. "It's been over 6 years and you're still looking out for me."
That voice. I haven't heard that for a very long time. This voice… It was something I always like to hear… that voice reminded me of a person I could always trust and depend on. No matter what.
"Itana Kario…" I responded. Itana was a girl that I've always liked and trusted. When my life was turning into a shit-hole, she was there 24/7.
"In the flesh" blushed Itana. I got up from the ground, holding her books. "Long time no see, Kyoki."
"Yeah… same to you!" A smile appeared on my face. Reuniting with her for 6 long years, which felt longer than that, is standing in my presence.
Her body changed so much. She was in her school uniform, but her thighs were curvy, her chest stood out, and her waist was slim, plus her high socks that went up to her knees. She had a nice hourglass-shaped body. The blood-red color in her eyes glowed as the crimson color consumed her black pupil, not wanting to escape.
"So your dad finally let you attend UA?" I asked, giving back her books.
"Yeah, I and my mom had to do a lot of convincing for him to let me go here." Itana sighed. "He even wants me to still be the ruler of the underworld, which is a responsibility I don't wanna partake in...," said Kario, as she continued to blabber.
Itana Kario, Quirk: Vampire. Her dad, Lord Kario, who is a pro-hero of the underworld and the ruler, has a daughter that goes to UA. Turns out, her family and my family were very close to each other. When they heard the news of my mom passing away, they'd always check up on me. Especially, Itana.
"Anyway… what are you walking down the hall for?" asked Itana, who finally stopped talking, and stuffing her books in her bag.
Lost in my thoughts, this question snapped me out of my thoughts. "Huh? Oh yeah, Um… I was on my way to pick up my schedule for my classes and my hero suit," I responded. "Problem is, I don't know where the guidance counselor is…"
Itana chuckled at me and placed her hand between my ears. "Always willing to help, but can't spot something so simple."
"... Sh-shut up," I said, blushing at the girl. She always likes to tease me.
"Well, no worries, I've already been up there, and I could take you."
My ears perked up on my head. "Really!"
She shook her head in agreement. "But, I'm not gonna show you my schedule until you get yours first," said Itana, crossing her arms.
"Ok, that's fine, let's go," I said.
She then leads me to the guidance counselor's office. While heading there, we cut up some time to get a bit of small talk from our past.
A FEW MINUTES LATER…
"And then, she flew up in the air, and the devils had to get her down!" laughed Itana.
I laughed at her comment; she was telling me about some funny moments in middle school for her in the underworld. Some were good. Of course, I told her some of my adventures from when we split. It was a good time talking to her, it almost felt like she never left.
"Boy, am I glad we had this conversation. When I first saw you for the first time again for a while, you looked quite stressed and depressed."
"I have?" I said it as a lie. "I didn't notice." It was true. All morning, it stressed me on getting here, plus, while thinking about my mom at that. All Kario did was shoot a side glance at me.
"Y'know, I can tell when someone is lying to me or not. Half-vampire, remember?"
I started to sweat nervously. I forgot she had vampire powers, I never knew she could read body language well. Jeez, what did she learn in the past 6 years?
"Don't worry, I won't pressure you," said Itana. "I can tell you don't wanna talk about it."
As we continued walking towards the guidance counselor's office, she noticed the 2 different colored bracelets around my arm. She then asked me a question.
"Hey… Kyoki, you're still wearing those bracelets?"
This question she asked me threw me off guard. Turns out, she was the only person I've told about these things. They're very special to me, why wouldn't I stop wearing them? The question is, why did she say that to me?
"Uh- yeah, yeah. Sometimes it just helps me remember her... Y'know?"
"True, but it's been over 10 years. I'd figured you'd grown out of wearing them," said Itana.
The hell? What does she mean by "growing out of wearing them"? She wasn't there when he did what he did. She wasn't there to see the pain in my eyes when she begged for her life… This is the burden I have to carry for the rest of my life.
"Let's… just drop it," I said in an eager tone, clutching my backpack straps.
It surprised her at the way I spoke to her. My tail swung back and forth, rapidly. I still couldn't believe that she of all people would tell me that. Maybe she's just worried for me, that's all.
"We're here."
I stopped walking and looked at what caught her eye. The sign read: Guidance Counselor, in Japanese.
"Uh, well, thanks," I said, nervously.
Itana chuckled. "Don't worry. It's the least I can do for an old friend."
"Hm, yeah."
"Just to warn you, he's not very 'friendly', "said Itana, signally quotation marks around her last word.
"Got it," I said, darting a smile.
As I walked into the room, I saw a well-decorative room, covered in the school's standout colors. Some pictures of the retired pro-hero, All-might, stood up against the walls and had the UA symbol placed around it.
"Wow, this place is cool-"
"RAAAAHHHHHHH!"
I jumped back in fear, tripping, losing my balance, and falling onto the ground.
"STUPID STAPLER, YOU JUST HAD TO-!"
The rest of his words weren't English; he growled and spoke gibberish. From the looks of things, it looked like a canine dog, just like me sorta. He had blond hair, a large orange-yellow coat, a large bulky body, and a muzzle that covered his snout. He didn't realize I was in the room, so I tried my best to grab his attention.
"Um, hello, Mr—uh, dog... sir?" This isn't working. My nerves were sky-rocketing crazy. "Uh, excuse me?"
After what I said, he looked up at me and leaped in front of me.
"WHO ARE YOU, AND WHY AREN'T YOU IN CLASS?!," yelled the colossal beast.
Gosh, Itana wasn't kidding when she said "friendly".
"This is my 1st day here, and I was wondering if I can pick up my schedule and my hero costume for my classes?" I was sweating bullets, this guy was really scary. Even though we were both canines, he'd look like a single punch could take me out.
He examined me from head to toe. His "tantrum" seemed to calm down. He took a deep sigh and walked over back to his desk.
"Look, kid. I'm sorry about the incident earlier, I was mad and I should have taken it out on a student, especially a new one," said the dog. "My name is Ryo Inui, known as the pro-hero, Hound Dog," said Hound Dog.
Hound Dog? That name sounds familiar? I could've sworn I've heard this name before.
"N—no worries, it's fine."
"Anyway, what's your name, kid?" He turned to his computer, waiting for his response.
"Oh, um, Kyoki Ekana," I said, tugging on my uniform collar.
He then typed my name into the computer, but before he did, he shot a stony stare at me. He then typed my name into the computer.
My body froze in shock. I felt like his eyes were scorching into my heart slowly when I told him my name. And his eyes were like sharp daggers, ready to stab me if I made any movements.
That's Strange. What was the look for, but he isn't wrong for looking at me that way? The name I possess isn't a good one. It's filled with so much darkness of dirt that if you drop a seed in it, you'll get a flower that dies out instantly. I don't think he knows about the history behind it, though.
After a while, he gave me a printed-out sheet of my schedule. The paper was warm in my hands, covered in black-printed writing. I looked at my schedule and it gave me the list of my classes:
Room: Class 1-A
Teachers:
Homeroom: Shota Aizawa (Eraser Head)
English Teacher: Hizashi Yamada (Present Mic)
Studies Teacher: Toshinori Yagi (All-Might)
Modern Literature Teacher: Ken Ishiyama (Cementoss)
Mathematics Teacher: Ectoplasm
These classes seem fine, I guess. I've heard about Class 1-A during the annual sports festival; crazy, I'll be sharing a class with them. And All-Might is one of my teachers. Everything else looks good otherwise.
"Looks like you're lucky," said Hound Dog. I looked up at him as he said his statement. "Class 1-A is an excellent class, and so is their teacher; you and one other student will join that class. Luckily, you and the other student got your provisional hero license's already, so you'll both be up-to-date with the class."
"Your hero costume is still being made; come back tomorrow to pick it up."
"Oh, okay, thanks Mr. Hound Dog, sir," I said, still clutching my schedule in my hand.
"Hound Dog is fine, I'm also the guidance counselor of this school; If you ever want to talk about anything, just come to me," he responded, crossing his arms. "I'll excuse you for being absent since it's your first day. Now be going along. Class started a few minutes ago.''
I nodded my head in response and headed for the door. Before I could touch the door handle, he said some words to me.
"Do a magnificent job out there, I'll be watching you," said Hound Dog, still crossing his arms.
What the hell does he mean by watching me?
"Got it."
As I exited the room, I saw Itana, sitting in her chair waiting patiently for me. Her eyes were directed to the white sheet that was in my hands. "Soooo…," she said, smiling at me. "What's the class?"
"He told me I got Class 1-A," I said, showing her my schedule. "What about you?"
"Well, looks like I will be seated right next to you then," said the vampire girl, handing me her schedule. As I grabbed it, I opened it up and read her class list. Everything on her schedule looked exactly like mine.
"No way! We both are going to be in the same classes!" I exclaimed, handing her back her schedule, as she also did to me. "Say… did you receive your hero costume already?"
Itana sighed in disappointment. "No… they said I had to change some things because it was too 'revealing'. They said it'll be done in 2-3 days, what about you?"
"He said I can pick mine up tomorrow," I told her.
"Oh, okay," she responded. "Lucky." I gave her a small chuckle.
"Anyway, we better get going then. We're already late," said Itana, grabbing her bag. I nodded, and we headed to our class. Things were looking up for me. I was one step closer to being a hero.
As time went by, we finally reached our classroom. There stood a large door that read '1-A' in red. My nerves kicked in and I started to sweat nervously. Itana saw this and decided it was best to comfort me.
"Hey… relax, Kyoki. Everything will be fine," she said, as she put her hand on my shoulder. I look back at her and give her a small smile in return for thanks. She was indefinitely a genuine friend.
Itana grabbed the room door and slid it open. My heart raced as the door slid open. It felt like everything was in slow motion. I didn't know what to do.
Come on, Kyoki, get yourself together. You're doing this for her, remember that!
As the door stopped in motion, it revealed a classroom filled with students all turning their attention on us. The teacher, who was wearing an all-black jumpsuit, with dark gray scarfs wrapped around his neck and up to his mouth. He looked exhausted and looked like he was going to pass out at any minute.
"Oh, good, you're both here," said the sleepy-headed teacher. As we entered the class, he made Itana and I stand in front of the class.
"Class, meet your 2 new classmates: Itana Kario and Kyoki Ekana."
Everyone had their attention on us. Their eyes felt like security cameras tracking our every move; all I did was just stand there, drawing my mind blank.
"Hello, everyone!," exclaimed Itana. Since when was she such an outgoing person? "I can't wait to be in your class and learn so much about you all! This is my best friend: Kyoki Ekana."
Then, unexpectedly, the entire class shifted their attention to me. My tail was wagging like crazy; I had never been this nervous before. Maybe it's the "first day of school jeebies"? I better say something fast, or else I won't make a first good impression on the class. I gulped and spoke.
"Uh... H-Hi, everyone. It's n-nice to meet you all, my-my name is… uh…?"
Damn it. What's my name again? Why is this happening? Come on, Ekana, get yourself together! Say it now!
Before I could say my name, our teacher, Mr. Aizawa, interrupted me. "Alright, go take your seats in the back, please," as he pointed at two empty seats by two students wearing glasses and brown hair.
With me being disappointed, we both walked to our newly assigned seats. I sat next to this brunette-haired girl, while Itana sat next to the boy with the glasses. Mr. Aizawa then continued his class for the day.
"Alright everyone, now that's out the way, I want everyone to take out their notebooks today. We're going to take some notes on the do's and don'ts of hero rescuing," he concluded.
I did what he instructed us to do, but something else drew my mind out.
I'll never become a pro-hero if I can't even say my name in front of a couple of students. My anxiety was over the roof, it felt like I couldn't breathe.
This is going to be a long year.
