Prologue: Growing Up
"Well here we are. Our new home for the next few years. Your mom and me will unpack while you can go explore, just don't go too far." Dak Coleman says to his kid. The house is one story, on .4 acres, mostly brown with some red brick where the chimney is. The modest forest line is maybe a quarter mile from the house, with meadows far and wide only broken up by the occasional neighbor. Only a short distance from the house is the main road that has them far on the outskirts of Jubilife City.
Dak is both a Pokemon field researcher as well as part-time Pokemon Ranger. Currently he is 33 years old, 5'10 tall with thick neck length black hair, only interrupted by a bald streak 1 inch wide going from his right temple to the back of his head, obtained by a very close call with an enraged Scyther. His build leads more towards a runner's figure, since both of his jobs make fitness a necessity. He has a deep tan due to spending most of his time outdoors. His usual outfit is a short sleeve shirt under a vest with pockets for his work needs, with thick pants and boots. His wife Maria is is 34 years old, small and slender at 5'3, but knows how to handle herself and others due to various jobs at Pokemon corrals and day cares over the years. She still has a decent tan, but nowhere near as deep as her husband. Her usual outfit allows ease of movement at a moments notice, loose sleeves on a blouse with knee length shorts and comfortable running shoes.
Now we come to our main character, Drugan. Just 9 years old but a handful due to his determination when he has his mind set on a goal. Already knowing that he wants to be a trainer when he turns 14, he has in the last year or so begun learning a few things from his parents, mostly on how to take care of himself to be self sufficient. He is average height for his age, with short hair the same shade as his father. He is dressed in a shirt and shorts of lighter colors with sandals, a few stains present from some of his prior adventures marking the clothes as well worn.
Giving a halfhearted wave to his parents, he heads for the forest line, eager to explore. Just inside the tree line, he comes across a Ratatta laying in the shade of a tree. The Ratatta eyes Drugan briefly, but otherwise leave him alone. Going further into the forest, Drugan comes across a few other common Pokemon such as Yanma, and Burmy. Eventually he comes across a substantial clearing closer to 60 feet across with an at most 20 foot wide pond in the center. The water is dark enough to have trouble seeing more than a few inches down. Wanting to see how far down the water goes, Drugan slowly sticks his hand in. Once the water reaches his elbow, he stops having felt no indication of the bottom. He stirs the water making it more murky. This allows a small figure to rise near to the surface unnoticed. Feeling a small push against his fingers, Drugan lightly pushed back, then withdraws his arm from the pond. Surfacing is a small red fish with a blank look on their face. Drugan being a kid and relatively fearless, waves hello. The red fish simply replies with "Karp, Magikarp." Seeing as the fish is being harmless, Drugan decides to play with it until the sun starts going down a few hours later.
Drugan clothes are damp from the few splashes Magikarp has retaliated with over the course of their playtime. Seeing the sky getting darker, Drugan decides to head back to the house, but not before having one last conversation with Magikarp. "I have to head home, I'll try to be back tomorrow to play some more." He says, and Magikarp simply bobs up and down more as a response.
It doesn't take long for Drugan to get back to the meadows, altering course since he came out a bit further away then where he went in. As he gets back to the house, his parents have finished up moving boxes from the moving truck, and have begun to unpack. His mother sees him, then does a quick visual check when he gets close for any scratches or bruises, and seeing none, waves him into the house to get cleaned up. After a quick dinner of ramen, sleep comes quickly to young Drugan, exhaustion from the day catching up to him.
Waking up to the sounds of Starly greeting the day, Drugan gets ready and heads to the kitchen where his mom has already started breakfast. His dad walks in a few minutes later, still stifling a few yawns. Tentative plans are made to finish up unpacking and Drugan is wrangled into helping where he can. It's after lunch before Drugan can away to go play some more, with his father saying that lessons will resume tomorrow.
Heading back into the forest, it doesn't take long to arrive at the pond, though Magikarp is nowhere in sight. Deciding to do what he did yesterday, he swirls his hand in the water a few times. As he does, the Magikarp comes to the surface. Though they start out playing around, Drugan realizes that if he wants to be a Pokemon trainer, why not start now with Magikarp. "I know we haven't known each other long, but when I get old enough, I plan to be a Pokemon trainer. My dad has already starting teaching me things that I need to know. So how about it?" Drugan asks with his hand held out to Magikarp. Magikarp bobs in the water for bit, then more forcefully than before pushes their head against Drugan's hand. Just like that a commitment is born.
"I don't know what moves you know or can learn, but I think that there are a few things you can work on while I'm also exercising. While your fins and tail give you your ability to move, they can always be stronger. So while I do various exercises around this clearing, try and push yourself into the air as hard and as fast as you can with your fins and tail. You can also focus on just swinging your tail back and forth while remaining in place, either one should be able to help you strengthen your body. We'll have to figure out more exercises later on to either take our training further with different exercises or to show proof our progress in current training." Drugan says, all the while attempting a few of the stretches he has seen his dad do. While Drugan starts by running around the pond as many times as he can before he can't run anymore, Magikarp start flopping around on the surface of the water trying to get airborne if even for a moment. As several hours pass, neither of them have made much progress, other than becoming exhausted from all the energy they have used up. As Drugan gets ready to leave for the day, he waves to Magikarp who with a last burst of energy succeeds in leaping a few feet out of the water, causing Drugan to laugh in glee at a small goal being achieved.
After getting back home, he eats some dinner, and falls deep asleep shortly afterward, exhaustion from the day finally catching up with him.
In the morning, his dad is the one who has breakfast ready before Drugan is awoken via the aroma. After eating, Drugan is asked for his input on if he wants to cover a new topic, or do the next lesson on a prior path of knowledge. Drugan immediately knows what he wants to learn. "How do you help a Pokemon get stronger outside of battle?" He asks, a gleam in his eye that he can hopefully use any knowledge gained to help get Magikarp stronger. "There are many answers to that question, some true, some false, and some merely unproven. One of the more common ways is to practice known moves until they become easier to use, though the stronger the move, the more time it will take to improve said move, with many Pokemon losing the will to take a move further, and thus they leave it for a last resort or the move doesn't get any stronger. Many wild Pokemon who are focused on getting stronger learn how to improve from seeing others perform the same move. Another proven way, though dangerous is weight training. Too much weight too early can either discourage or outright do damage to a Pokemon's growth potential. On a side note, any time a Pokemon gets stronger, either through significant time training or more commonly through evolution, a refresher period is recommended so that increased capabilities can be gotten used to. A false training method is beating on a Pokemon. That will either result in the Pokemon lashing out, thus injuring the trainer and innocent bystanders, or a mental breakdown where they loose the will to live. I won't tell you of the unproven methods, since those can result in serious injury, if they work at all.
In this manner several years have gone by as if in a flash. Drugan is now 12 years old and 4 foot 6 inches tall. His skin has a significant tan from spending lots of time outdoors, with very little body fat due to all the exercising. While his dad has taught him a lot, from identifying useful plants and berries found naturally, to proper exercises and wilderness survival, and fishing with a proper moral background, he can't be there to teach him all the time, since his job sometimes has him on assignment for research or is needed his in capacity as a Pokemon Ranger, and thus is gone for days at a time. On those days, his mother steps in, teaching him real world subjects, such as math and history, how to cook, and sometimes taking him the short distance via bus to Jubilife City to socialize with other kids in the park on the outskirts of the city.
Even with all this to occupy his time, unless it's heavily raining or other inclement weather is occurring, he makes it a point to go train with Magikarp. Magikarp has also significantly grown in the almost 3 years of their friendship. First off Drugan has learned that Magikarp is female, since her whiskers are white, not yellow. Secondly, she was initially barely 8 inches tall from top to bottom, not counting her top and bottom fins, now she is excess of 4 feet, with her fins extending that to just over 7 feet. This has been helped along by the various berries that Drugan has given to her after gathering them from the surrounding area. Third is that after finding out what she can eventually evolve into, she has been given the nickname of Leviathan when in combat/serious situations, and a shortened form of Levi for noncombat/peaceful situations. Lastly is that her strength has vastly increased with her size. She can use the move Bounce and reach heights in excess of 25 feet, her Tackle can strip the bark from the older trees around her pond, her Splash can send water from the center of the pond to past the edge, and her tail is now a definite weapon. With the edge of her tail, she can crack small to medium sized rocks in two with ease. She can also launch small rocks and other objects with the flat side of her tail at a high enough speed to knockout or outright discourage threats to the clearing her pond is located in. Their bond has become incredible from the barely formed friendship that it once was.
One day after getting back from training with Levi, Drugan is given some unexpected news from his parents: they are moving to Eternia City in a few weeks. The reason for the move is his father accepted a research posting involving more hands on study of various Pokemon. He will still have the occasional special assignment from the Ranger's Association, outside of that he will be home everyday. While Drugan is very excited for how glad his parents are about this, he knows that he needs to tell them about Levi, and hopes that he'll be allowed to take her with them, even though the minimum age for a pet license is 13 years old.
Figuring that telling his parents now is better than later, he gets their attention. "Mom, dad, while I'm happy about how excited you both are, there is a Pokemon I became friends with several years ago. I know I'm not old enough for a pet license yet, but I want you to meet her and let me take her with us when we move. I've been putting dad's lessons on training and care into practice these past few years."
His parents take a few minutes to talk the idea over with each other and figure that there is no harm in meeting their son's friend. It's agreed to do the meeting now since there is still daylight left, though his dad still grabs a few of his Pokemon to take along just in case.
30 minutes later they are almost at the clearing, with Drugan not telling his parents which Pokemon they will be meeting. "Levi, I brought my parents to meet you. Please come on out." Drugan calls out just as they exit the treeline into the clearing with the large pond, though really small lake is more like it, since over the years Drugan and Levi have worked to double the ponds initial size to almost 40 feet across, while the depth in the middle still remains unknown.
Levi emerges at a moderate pace from the center of the pond and quickly moves to the edge. Drugan's parents are amazed the size of the Magikarp, while very relieved that it's not one of the more dangerous/violent species one can encounter. Seeing their son so proud to show his friend off, removes any lingering anxiety from their minds. They spend some time there with Drugan trying to explain them moving to a different city to Levi and his wanting Levi to come along on the move. The concept is gotten across due to their long association and a Pokemon's ability to moderately understand human speech. "Magikarp rarely get over 30 inches tall before either evolving or being eaten by predators, so the fact that she will keep growing even from this big size is incredible, along with the fact that she has yet to evolve. I'll get a poke-ball for her after I finish my last assignment in a week. She'll be registered to me, but you'll hold onto the poke ball, then we'll get her transferred to you once you've turned 13 and we get you a pet license." Drugan's dad says as he looks on with joy as his son and wife interact with Levi.
The next few weeks pass by quickly and moving day is now upon them. Drugan constantly rubs his fingers along Levi's poke-ball that is held by a magnet style necklace. Of course it's not an ordinary poke-ball, but a much more expensive premier ball. The packing up of the house is finished in short order and now they are on their way to Eternia City. The research lab where Drugan's father will be working is a short distance from where their house is located on the outskirts of the city, but still most of a days walk from Eternia Forest. The lab sits a on roughly 20 acres, though the building only takes up one acre. There is a large lake that is partially on the lab's property from the west side. The house is roughly a 30 minute walk from the lab and roughly the same amount from where the main part of Eternia City starts.
The trip took almost a week by truck both due to distance and to sightseeing at several cities along the route, given that the natural routes of 204 and 205 are only passable on foot or by flying Pokemon. Their route with an actual road took them west on 218 almost to the coast, then north on 234 and 233. They stopped in Chocovine Town to see a Pokemon contest with a Pikachu winning it's trainer the coveted ribbon.
The trip continued up route 232 to Squallville, then further north to 231 and Sandlestraw Town, where they turned southeast onto the final leg of their journey. Each time they stopped, if there was a pond or a river close by then Drugan was quick to let Levi out to explore, though his father was always close at hand in case they encountered any aggressive Pokemon. It also needs to be said that Levi while not being any where close to a kleptomaniac still had the urge to investigate anything shiny and bring it to Drugan. Mostly it was small shards of glass or a broken piece of a poke-ball. When they stopped by the river that intercepts route 231, they happened upon a trainer battle between water Pokemon that heavily stirred up the ground along the river bottom. After both trainers left in opposite directions, Drugan let out Levi to explore. Her gaze turned downward as she went to explore the bottom of the river where a glint of yellow caught her eye through the settling sediment. She went to scoop it up and also got the rock it was apparently stuck in as well. She quickly surfaced and got Drugan's attention. He and his dad went to investigate what she dumped on the shore. His dad being the researcher that he is, had his jaw almost hit the ground once he realized what Levi brought them. The chuck of yellowish rock, was actually a golden nugget of significance size stuck in the rock, but that realization was pushed down as the rock turned out to be a big fossil, Levi's saliva having removed much of the soft dirt covering it. His dad quickly throws his jacket to cover the nugget and fossil. "Looks like you'll have a great amount in your starting trainer balance when you pass the test in a few years thanks to this nugget, and I'll definitely have a side project to research in this fossil. Let's get this loaded up into the truck. Great job Levi." Says Drugan's dad, reaching over to rub Levi's head. His mom is wondering about the commotion but Dak simply mentions that Levi really is treasure for what she finds. No other items of significance are found at any of the remaining stops.
They finally get to Eternia City. The house is 2 stories tall and sits on 8 acres of land, with another building on the property being an older style of mass living quarters almost like a dorm building that is 3 stories tall and in rather rough shape. As Drugan see the property, his mother Maria points out the old building and mentions plans to slowly renovate it to become a bed and breakfast for traveling trainers and tourists that don't want to stay inside the denser area of the city.
A few days after they settle in, Dak takes Drugan to the research lab to get try and remove the nugget without damaging the fossil. The few other researchers once they are clued into the fossil are all too eager to stop their other projects to work on it together. 2 days later the nugget is successfully removed with minimal damage to the fossil. Due to it's size the nugget should be able to sell for at least 15k poke. The fossil after careful cleaning is roughly 18 inches long and just over a foot wide. The researchers try to identify if the fossil is of a Pokemon or not, but don't have enough experience with fossils to succeed. A request is sent to the Oreburgh Gym Leader Roark whom specializes in fossils, to come by for a look but it's unknown when a response will be received.
Roughly a week after word was put out on the net of the nugget, there were several offers made, mainly from collectors and jewelers. After several offers were compared, the nugget went to a jeweler for 28k poke, all of which went into a savings account for Drugan.
Levi herself garnered some interest as her size and strength grew as it was decided to have her stay at the edge of the lake that was on the research lab's property. She was able to make friends with most of the other Pokemon that called the lab home.
Training continued apace for the next 21 months, with only 2 events breaking up Drugan and Levi's routine. Drugan acing his pet license test and having Levi officially transferred to his ownership was one event, the other was Roark finally being able to visit. He took 2 days to determine that the fossil did contain a Pokemon, the jaw Pokemon known as Ty runt. Unfortunately there is too much damage for the Oreburgh museum to bring the fossil back to life, but the Devon Corporation in Rustboro might be able to succeed. That cements Drugan's plan to start his journey in the Hoenn Region after he turns 14.
Levi has continued to grow but not as fast as she did earlier on. She is now 5'2 from top to bottom without her fins. She has also managed to combine her Bounce and Tail Fin Strike attacks into a devastating attack that knocks out most opponents in 1 hit.
Drugan is packing for a short trip. His dad has been offered a short chance for some hands on research of the Tyranitar herd near Mt. Silver in the Johto Region. Drugan is coming with him since Dak thinks this will be great learning opportunity for him. They will only be there a week, so his mother is staying behind to continue the renovations that should be finished in 5 or 6 months. The plane ride is uneventful and they land near the Pokemon League headquarters, then take a bus to the Ranger station near the herd. Drugan is warned that though Tyranitar and its prior evolutions are normally peaceful, they can be stirred into a rage easily when threatened. Larvitar can screech loud enough to heavily disorient those it feels threatened by and also weigh a lot more than their size would suggest due to their bodies density. Drugan is given a set of ear plugs that can less the screech's impact but only if he is not the direct target. Also taking his father's lessons to heart, he has bought a sets of brushes of various strength, since many Pokemon even those without fur enjoy being groomed.
While his dad starts conducting his research, one of the Rangers that the herd is familiar with escorts Drugan to a group of Larvitar being watched over by a lone Pupitar. Doing as instructed, he sits in clear view of the Larvitar, but doesn't make any moves aside from pulling out a few of the harder bristle brushes. 1 hour later a lone Larvitar is courageous enough to investigate him. As the Larvitar get closer, Drugan slowly raises the brush in clear view and demonstrates it gently upon his own arm. The Larvitar comes close enough for Drugan to gently reach out with the brush, keeping it in Larvitar's view as he rubs it along the stubby light green arm. The young Larvitar likes the sensation and moves closer, whereupon Drugan moves the brush to Larvitar's back and head. The Larvitar soon calls out to the others, where 5 more quickly approach with their family member's encouragement. Soon after Drugan is swarmed by the rest following behind that group, enough that even the Ranger is grabbing some additional brushes from Drugan's bag and brushing any Larvitar within reach. 2 hour later the 15 Larvitar are settled in a blissed out pile. As he and the Ranger go to leave, Drugan is lightly bumped from behind. It's the Pupitar, and it's eyes are on the brushes being put away. It's the work of a few minutes to leave the Pupitar happy and relaxed but still alert enough to watch over its charges. When they meet for dinner, Dak is amazed at what happened. The other Rangers and researchers think Drugan exaggerated his story until the Ranger that was with him vouches for him. The next few days are spent having fun with the Larvitar, even Levi is brought out on occasion and joins in playing with them. A few bumps and bruises are gained since the Larvitar aren't used to a fragile playmate that Drugan is. 2 days before they are set to leave, a warning siren echoes across the valley. Immediately after the siren stops, the Ranger is herding Drugan and the Larvitar with their Pupitar guard to a nearby cave, before he rushes off. Vicious attacks are heard off in the distance for the next hour or so. Drugan has kept the Larvitar calm enough for them not to screech, but it's been a near thing.
Coming around the bend is a guy who looks like he has been put through the ringer several times. His clothes are torn in various places, with some of the clothing being burnt. 2 poke-balls are visible, but they are plain if fairly scoffed, no evidence of what they hold. He sees the Larvitar and his eyes light up, ignoring Drugan's presence. "Jackpot! Me and the guys can make our money back easily with this many. " The guy says in a deranged tone of voice his eyes lighting up with dollar signs. The Pupitar rushes out to defend them but the guy proves he's no slouch. "Kingler, Hydro Pump on that Pupitar." He cries out as he thumbs the release for a poke-ball. A big orange and white crustacean appears in a flash of red light and immediately opens fire with its mouth, a high pressure jet of water shooting out. Pupitar uses its ability of moving via pressurized air to dodge but is kept on the defensive. Deciding to even the odds, Drugan calls out Levi to attack the poacher. "Leviathan, Bounce Strike on that guy." The poacher is too focused on Kingler and Pupitar's fight to notice, until he sees himself in shadow. He looks up just as Leviathan is completing her attack. There is a loud snap, then the poacher proceeds to howl in agony, his right arm hanging limply by his side, his left hand trying to staunch the blood flow, since Leviathan's attack didn't just break his right collar bone, but also left a bloody slice through the remains of the now apparently armored shirt. Kingler is distracted by the scream from his trainer, allowing Pupitar, exhausted from the short fight to pause its movement to charge and land a Thunderbolt that knocks Kingler out. The Larvitar choose that moment to screech, thankfully Drugan still has his ear plugs in so he is spared the worst of it. Leviathan is kept out on the off chance that more poachers show up. 20 minutes later, Dak and the rest of the Pokemon Rangers are almost at the clearing outside the cave. Drugan has managed to calm the Larvitar down, but he was still on guard til he sees one of his father's Pokemon, a Machoke, rounding the bend. He recalls Levi at that point, whispering how awesome she is to her poke-ball, which wiggles a little in response. Following behind the Rangers are several Tyranitar that rush to the Larvitar to assure themselves that they are safe. After telling what happened to his father and the other Pokemon Rangers, Drugan hears his father's praise in response to his actions, but the adrenaline has just worn off, and he slumps down, out like a light.
Cracking his eyes open, Drugan tries to figure out where he is as his eyes adjust. The familiar room where he was staying comes into focus shortly there after. It's dark out side the window, so no indication of what time it is. Looking around, he spots his dad typing away at the computer. His dad notices that he's awake greets him. Dak then fills Drugan in on what happened at the main site of the poachers attack. "A small group of 8 poachers thought that they were hitting the current cave where the Larvitar stay, but didn't realize that it's swapped every month. Instead a good 2 dozen Tyranitar and Pupitar got stirred up into a rage. Me and the few researchers there quickly called in help from the Ranger's Association. Then it was only a matter of trapping them, but it seems one slipped through that you had to deal with. He's alive by the way but he lost the arm and most of his shoulder to your attack. While I hate that you had to be involved in that mess, you handled yourself brilliantly." Drugan slumps back down in relief, as much as criminals like poachers deserve their punishments and more, he doesn't want to become a killer at such a young age.
The last day at the preserve is momentous. Drugan is made an honorary Pokemon Ranger for his defense of the Larvitar. When they go to see the herd, a lone Larvitar rushes to Drugan as soon as he's in sight. Drugan recognizes her as the same Larvitar that initially came up to him at the beginning of the week. The matriarch Tyranitar of the herd gestures and speaks and one of the Rangers that has worked closely with the herd is able to loosely translate into words and has a stunned look on their face. Turning to the rest he says, " It roughly translates as: 'You strong, you defender, take care of my kin.' Looks like you just got yourself a Larvitar." Drugan bends down and hugs the Larvitar as she talks in a joyful tone.
Before they can leave paperwork needs to be filled out and submitted to allow Drugan to legally take possession of the Larvitar he has taken to calling Queen, after all as the daughter of a matriarch, she will be a leader of her own herd in the future. A regular poke-ball is used to hold her for now, but Drugan already has plans to transfer her to a premier ball similar to Levi.
After getting back home to Eternia City, things settle down for the next few months. After having had Queen scanned, it is learned that she currently knows the moves: Scratch, Screech, Leer, Mud-slap, Horn Attack, and the egg move Thunderbolt. Decent for a young Pokemon, but the 6 months until he takes his trainer exam will provide plenty of time to expand that move pool.
6 months pass by in a flash it seems like. Levi continues to grow but not at the same rate she was almost 5 years ago, having gained only an additional 3 inches in height, while her scales have begun darkening to deep red in the last 2 months. Queen has grown significantly in this time, gaining 18 inches in height and 60 lbs of weight. She has mastered all of her previously known moves except for the egg move of Thunderbolt, that only works at regular strength 25% of the time, with the other 75% of the time the attack is only as strong as a regular Thunder-shock. She has also learned the moves Dig, Rock Throw, Iron Head, and Iron Defense. Roark has since provided a letter of introduction for when Drugan travels to Rustboro City to hopefully have Devon Corporation revive the Jaw fossil in his possession.
His father Dak has gotten more recognition for his research, and his mom opened the B&B just a few days ago. Already there has been interest due to the advertising she has done in Eternia City and on the poke-net. Already it has been agreed to store his extra Pokémon at the lab, with the Pokemon Drugan is not keeping for himself being available for trade through the B&B. He also agrees to take requests to find specific Pokemon.
Right now Drugan is on his way to the Pokemon center on Eternia's east side to take his written trainer exam, then off to the League office (that only major cities have) where his League certified advanced battle test will take place. The written exam is merely a formality since he knows he'll ace it. The battle test on the other hand will determine if he qualifies for not only the advanced Gym Leader challenge, but also be allowed to help in the apprehension of dangerous criminals and Pokemon by giving him a bounty hunter rating.
2 hours later Drugan exits the Pokemon center, glad the long test is over with. It's another 20 minutes for him to walk to the Pokemon League building. Entering through the sliding door, Drugan heads straight for the receptionist. After explaining why he's here, the receptionist is shocked that a newbie trainer is taking the advanced battle test. To qualify for the test, you either have to be a trainer for at least 8 months and have obtained 6 or more main Gym badges, or have taken your trainer test less than 2 days before. The multiple choice portion of his trainer exam was graded via computer and the results are already in the League database. The essay portion makes up 30 points of the total grade, with room for bonus points, and will be factored into the total within 24 hours of taking the test, but trainers only need to only have a total grade of 50 points to pass. After looking Drugan up in the system with the exam identification number he was given, she is shocked to see 70 points next his exam score with a note that the essay portion is not yet factored in. After getting over her shock, she calls for the League trainer on duty for this week to proctor the test. After the situation is explained, Drugan follows him to the battlefield outback of the building just after the proctor stops at a terminal to retrieve the test Pokemon.
"The rules for this battle test are simple. 2v2, no substitutions for either side, no items except for already held items, and we release at the same time. Get ready?" As the proctor sees Drugan hold out a poke-ball, the Pokemon are then called out. "Electabuzz." "Queen, battle ready". Knowing the battle has already begun, Drugan doesn't wait for Queen to finish materializing before calling out his first command. "Screech, then Dig." Queen knowing that the battle was coming along with the training she's gone through doesn't hesitate before letting loose a powerful Screech that disorients both the Electabuzz and the proctor, then immediately disappears into the ground via Dig. The proctor after recovering takes the time to have the Electabuzz use Charge, who barely finishes the move before Drugan calls out another attack combo while Queen is still underground. "Iron Head into Horn Attack." The Electabuzz instinctively moves but not fast enough to avoid Queen popping out of the ground, her horn and head shining. Electabuzz is stabbed in the outer right thigh, the force of the attack is then transferred, shooting Electabuzz 25 feet in the air. Electabuzz tries to some get semblance of control in its fall, but can't do much before making full body contact with the field, with the force of the landing throwing up a dust cloud. While waiting for the cloud to dissipate, Drugan has Queen power up her defense with a few uses of Iron Defense. The cloud dissipates to reveal Electabuzz knocked out and bleeding from its leg. The proctor quickly recalls the Pokemon, and sends out a Psyduck and calls out an attack. "Water Gun." Drugan doesn't miss a beat and attacks. "Try to counter with Thunderbolt." Queen throws her head back then forward, unleashing a medium-sized bolt of electricity, bigger than a Thunder-shock, but still smaller than a normal Thunderbolt attack from her horn. The electric attack hits the Water Gun and conducts itself back to the Psyduck. The force of the attack shoots Psyduck off to the far right side of the battlefield, where it twitches a few times, but otherwise says down. After confirming that her opponent is down, Queen cries out in victory and runs back to Drugan to celebrate. The proctor returns the crispy Psyduck to its poke-ball, then crosses the field to congratulate him. As they walk back inside, Queen by his side, the receptionist heard them come in and remarks that the battle was quick, and thinking that Drugan lost since the battle didn't even take 10 minutes, goes to say a statement about learning from defeat, only to see Drugan's grin. The proctor gives details on the battle. "Despite the strength of the Pokemon I used being close to a 2 badge team, the kid's Pokemon is definitely better trained. Not to mention an electric attack from a Larvitar is almost unheard of. I didn't even land an attack, and the effectiveness of the combination moves is more in line with a 3 or 4 badge team. This kid is going to go far." The receptionist updates Drugan's records in the system and informs him that the basic pokedex will be delivered in 3 days, all but confirming that Drugan scored high enough on the trainer exam to pass.
Leaving the building, Drugan decides to celebrate a little before heading home. Him and Queen find a dessert place that does Pokemon approved food and gets 3 of the berry infused dishes to go. Finding a park a short distance away that has a big fountain for Levi to relax in, he sits down on a nearby bench and sets the dessert down to the side before aiming Levi's release point to be in the fountain. After telling Levi of their success, they settle in to enjoy the snack, though Levi eats hers in one bite since the dish is so small compared to her. Both Levi and Queen get some looks from the passing people, and end up playing a little with some of the children under theirs parent's watchful gaze. Another 30 minutes pass before Drugan decides to head home, returning Queen and Levi to their poke-balls.
The next few days pass in relative peace. Drugan's parents gift him a space expanded backpack for his travels which is already filled with most of the necessities including a hardened steel baton for emergency defense when his Pokemon are occupied with their own opponents. When the pokedex is delivered, it's green with dark blue highlights. Using the instructions provided, Drugan connects his bank account to the pokedex, which is down to 15k from the 40k that was the result of odd jobs around Eternia City and from when the nugget was sold. He has 20 regular poke-balls, 2 premier poke-balls, 3 revives, 5 great balls, 20 potions, 7 super potions, and a variety of Pokemon food along with various status cure berries. Last to be carefully packed is his Jaw fossil. His dad's fellow researchers gift him a poke-gear so he can stay in contact, along with some effect orbs for when he catches enough Pokemon to have a need to remind him which is which.
