There will be two major Canon Divergence in regards to the fourth and fifth book: Cedric is alive (he was tortured with the Cruciatus Curse instead of simply being killed, and as a second witness to Voldemort's return Cedric tells Percy that Harry isn't lying, skipping over Percy and Mr. Weasley's fight). Some elements from the Marvel Universe version of the Norse Gods will be used. (Having to be worthy to lift Mjolnir, Thor and Loki being "brothers", Mjolnir being able to conjure lightning, etc...)
Chapter 1: The Hammer
It was a quiet morning as students were returning from the Winter Break. Harry, Hermione and the Weasleys were in the Great Hall talking mostly about DA and Umbridge. The Hall's sounds were filled with the sounds of people talking excitedly about what they were up to during Christmas when suddenly the snow that was once magically falling from the enchanted roof started disappearing before vanishing all together, the ceiling of the Great Hall once cloudy was now looking as if a storm was coming. Heads started turning towards the roof as lightning came crawling through the grey clouds. The professors had stood up watching as the normally passive charm turned erratic, their wands pointing towards the clouds that were surrounding all of the ceiling. The staff started instructing all students to leave the Great Hall, however Harry along with Hermione and the Weasleys had pulled out their wands and were aiming them at the ceiling.
Dumbledore's Army who were all excited at the prospect of learning the Patronus Charm, especially Cedric, who had managed a small mist before leaving for the Winter Break, immediately pulled out their wands. All except for Zacharias Smith and Marietta Edgecombe who instead decided to run out along with almost all of the other students.
There was a crash and a beam of light came through the now open roof, and something had crashed down in front of the professors' table. Everyone stood shook, even Umbridge's sickeningly sweet personality was nowhere to be seen, as the dust surrounded the mysterious object. The dust settled and everyone looked as a hammer stood on the ground, a small crater on the ground surrounding it making it seem as if the ground itself had spit it back out, it looked quite ordinary, with a big head yet a handle that could only be held with one hand.
Unsurprisingly the first ones to approach the mysterious object were the Weasley twins who had curiosity upon their faces.
"Messrs. Weasley" boomed McGonagall's voice. "I strictly forbid you from approaching whatever has just landed in front of us."
"Oi!" said Fred with mock hurt. "Do you really think that lowly of us Professor?"
"That we would walk into a potential Death Eater trap for mere curiosity?" George continued
"By ourselves?" both of them finished
"YES!" all of the professors exclaimed in a loud voice sans Dumbledore and Umbridge, the latter had put her wand away and instead started scribbling something on her clipboard. The Weasley twins rolled their eyes and muttered something under their breath that sounded very much like 'always ruining the fun' and 'it's like being back at The Burrow with Mum' they grumpily walked back to the DA, Lee Jordan received both of them with a pat on the back.
"Albus," whispered McGonagall to the Headmaster. "do you have any idea of what is going on?"
Dumbledore's signature winkling eyes were nowhere present in his gaze. "I'm afraid not Minerva," said the Headmaster. "this is beyond my comprehension." Dumbledore slowly walked towards the hammer, the staff sans Umbridge following closely behind. The Headmaster stared at the unknown weapon for seemingly what seemed hours, but were really mere seconds until he made a decision. "Severus," Dumbledore spoke softly towards the Potions Master. "If you could be as kind as to bring this weapon to my office for close examination." The head of Slytherin House gave the Headmaster a curt nod before brandishing his wand and casting the Levitation Charm. The hammer did not move an inch off the ground, and it seemed as if Snape was having trouble lifting his own wand as sweat was starting to form on his forehead, and it looked like he might just pop a vein.
"What's wrong Professor?" asked Ron with a lopsided grin on his face. "Can't get it up?"
"Mister Weasley!" exclaimed McGonagall at the same time Snape said. "10 points from Gryffindor."
There were quite a few laughs and even a chuckle from Dumbledore. "Minerva if you please?'' The Headmaster pointed towards the hammer to which McGonagall simply nodded, she tried using the Levitation Charm just like Snape just to find that it was as immovable as when he tried it. Soon several professors were trying to move the mysterious hammer, even Umbridge had stood up to the challenge albeit reluctantly, but none of them could move even an inch of it. "Alright allow me please" said Dumbledore before he too attempted to lift the hammer without touching it just to be received with the same treatment as the other professors. The few students that had stayed there along with most of the staff were in shock, if Albus Dumbledore could not lift this mysterious hammer then who could? Dumbledore whispered something in Snape, McGonagall, and Flitwick's vicinity and the three Heads of Houses immediately approached the object cautiously, you could cut the tension with a knife. Most students did not dare to breathe, afraid that whatever had landed inside the Great Hall was a piece of Dark Magic. The three professors were using jinx, hex, and curse-checking spells, but it was finally Flitwick who, because of his short stature, managed to see an inscription written on the side of the hammer's head.
"Headmaster, look!" exclaimed Flitwick. "I see something here." The staff soon reunited next to Flitwick, Dumbledore carefully cleaned the dust off the inscription.
Whosoever holds this hammer, if they be worthy and pure of heart, shall possess the power of the god Thor.
Dumbledore read the inscription, the twinkling in his eyes finally returning, he addressed the confused people who had stayed inside the Great Hall. "Fear not my dear students and faculty members." said the Headmaster in a loud, clear voice. "This is nothing that we should be afraid of." The students along with most of the professors were understandably not calmed down by their Headmaster's announcement, the tension that once filled the hall was basically tangible as everyone was ready to hear whatever explanation Dumbledore had ready for them. "It seems we are in the presence of a very special magical artifact. The legendary hammer Mjolnir"
"Bless you" said Ron, causing people to snicker around him and his ears to go red in embarrassment.
"But professor," said Hermione while glaring at anyone who was laughing at Ron. "Isn't Mjolnir a myth?"
"What is Mniormir?" asked Neville.
"Mjolnir" enunciated Hermione correcting Neville's pronunciation. "is a mythical hammer belonging to the god of thunder and strength Thor in Norse mythology, used both as a devastating weapon and as a divine instrument to provide blessings."
"Is there anything you don't know?" asked Ron clearly awed at Hermione's explanation, her cheeks turned pink at the compliment.
"Correct Ms. Granger, 10 points to Gryffindor" said Dumbledore causing Snape to send a glare at him. "However, those so-called myths are more like tales that had been long forgotten by many. It seems that we ourselves have been visited by one of these tales." Dumbledore quickly fixed the roof of the Great Hall with a flick of his wand. "The reason we cannot lift this hammer is simply because none of us are worthy enough to. Yes not even I, Mr. Longbottom." Dumbledore quickly added when he saw Neville raise his hand.
Ron and Hermione's gaze instantly landed on Harry, who was still looking at the strange hammer with intrigue. He must have sensed their gaze because he turned around bewildered to see Ron and Hermione along with Ginny and Cedric sending him incredulous looks. "What?" Harry asked, baffled by his friends' reactions.
"Seriously mate?" asked Ron. "If anyone fits the 'Oh so worthy and pure of heart warrior' it's you." He spoke the last sentence with mock elegance.
"He's right Harry," added Hermione, although she clearly didn't like the tone Ron was using. "You are what most people would think as the first option, for something like this."
Ron managed to hide his discomfort at hearing Hermione call Harry 'first option', but even he couldn't deny it. If anyone was worthy of wielding a legendary mythical weapon it would be Harry.
"No," said Harry turning towards his friends, his back facing the hammer. "You don't know that, for all we could know it could be Neville." He finished, pointing at his fellow Gryffindor.
"Nope, trust me." responded Neville, "That thing wouldn't consider someone that's basically a squib worthy."
"Don't say that about yourself, Neville" said Hanna Abbott. "You're as good a wizard as anyone else and whoever says otherwise is an idiot." When she finished she must've realized she spoke a little louder than she intended, because she, as well as Neville, went red in the face. The twins were wiggling their eyebrows at them and Ernie Macmillan was handing Cedric, who happened to have a grin on his face, a handful of galleons while muttering something that sounded remarkably like 'shouldn't have betted on Lovegood'.
"Be that as it may" continued Hermione, clearly trying to avoid both Neville and Hannah more embarrassment. "You fit the description of worthy."
"No, I do-" Harry exclaimed before being interrupted.
"Who went after Quirrell when he was 11 years old?" asked Ron.
"Well that doesn-"
"Who saved me from the Chamber of Secrets during my first year?" asked Ginny.
"But I-"
"And who saved me from You-Know-Who in that graveyard?" asked Cedric only loud enough for Dumbledore's Army to hear.
"That still doesn't mean that I-"
"Face it mate." said Ron clearly tired of Harry's excuses. "If anyone here is worthy of that ruddy thing it's most likely you." he finished trying very hard to suppress the familiar feeling of jealousy at hearing all of Harry's accomplishments.
Harry was internally groaning at his friends, trying to find any reason not to be considered worthy, but if he was being honest he did sound like the perfect candidate to be considered worthy by this weird magical hammer, he just hoped this had nothing to do with Voldemort. He turned to see the professors looking at him expectantly sans Snape and Umbridge who had sour looks on their faces.
'Of course' Snape thought bitterly, 'Give the boy a Hero Complex it's the last thing he needs'
He slowly walked towards Mjolnir, Dumbledore gave him a curt node before stepping aside, he looked at the hammer and could sense the magic coming from it. He put his wand back in his pocket and tentatively reached for the hammers, sensing no hint of Dark Magic he grasped the handle. Harry stared for a few seconds before trying to lift it.
'Emphasis on try' Harry thought.
The hammer would not budge, no matter how hard Harry tried the hammer remained on the ground. Finally, red in the face because of the force he had put into lifting the blasted thing, he relented. Harry turned and saw appreciative looks of both the professors and Dumbledore's Army along with a lopsided grin from Ron that said 'well you tried'. He was happy that finally something would not revolve around him, yet another part couldn't quite grasp itself around it. This was something that could have nothing to do with deathly tournaments or Dark Lords, and he was not considered good enough be that of worthiness or pureness of heart. He always considered himself the exact opposite of Voldemort. Was it pretentious of him to believe that the hammer would accept him? Maybe?
Harry didn't have time to dwell on these thoughts as he heard the sickeningly sweet voice of Dolores Umbridge. "Well do not be discouraged Mr. Potter." she said with a smile on her face. "After all, I do not believe that this particular magical artifact would ever accept someone who is dishonest."
"As I recall, professor, didn't the hammer also refuse to be lifted by you?" said Hermione haughtily, Umbridge's smile quickly faded being replaced with a frown that made her look even more like a toad.
The week went by and word had spread of a magical hammer that no one could lift, not even Dumbledore or Harry Potter. That didn't stop a multitude of students to try to lift it, many were warned by their professors not to touch the hammer as they didn't know exactly the repercussion of long exposure, but after seeing no one had suffered any type of side effects their warnings became less and less frequent. The Houses had all reacted like most would expect them to.
Most Gryffindors had not hesitated and directly approached the hammer, Fred and George tried lifting it at the same time, but neither managed to move it. It came as a surprise for everyone when Neville of all people had managed to slightly move it and this caused the Gryffindors to pride themselves in their classmate's accomplishment, even McGonagall seemed pleased.
The Slytherins were cautiously watching anyone who could lift the hammer, obviously intending to form an alliance with whoever was powerful enough to achieve such a feat. Draco Malfoy had said that the words 'pure of heart' meant blood purity and only true Pure-bloods (not Blood traitors like the Weasleys and Longbottom according to him) were able to lift the hammer, his theory was quickly disproven when he made to leave with the hammer in hand and instead fell on his bum causing many students at the Great Hall to laugh at him.
The Hufflepuffs were all trying to get one another to try and lift it, it was finally Cedric who volunteered to make an attempt at the seemingly impossible task, this time it was the Hufflepuffs who showed their pride along with professor Sprout as Cedric managed to slightly move just like Neville.
The Ravenclaws were trying to formulate what the hammer's magic considered 'worthy' and 'pure of heart' spending an increased amount of time researching in the library, unsurprisingly Hermione had also gone to the library to figure out what was the deal with the hammer.
The popularity of the hammer became so present that during every DA meeting thoughts of practicing the Patronus charm had been thrown out of the window. Cedric and Neville were the center of attention of many girls as well and it would seem as if Neville's face would stay red permanently, Cho had gone extremely defensive and it would seem as if she was ready to hex any girl who tried to flirt with Cedric. Neville, who wasn't accustomed to girl's fawning over him, was extremely humble and could not accept any type of compliment without blushing to the roots of his hair.
Even the Ministry had gotten involved, they arrived a few days after the hammer arrived, most undoubtedly because of Umbridge. Fudge himself tried lifting until he passed out, he became quite flustered when he heard a few chuckles from the students. He even instructed some of his aurors to try lifting the hammer, Tonks and Shacklebolt had made an appearance and luckily were in charge of supervising Mjolnir's activities, Harry, Hermione and the Weasleys couldn't help but think that it was Dumbledore's doing. However the most tense everyone had been was when Lucius Malfoy had gone as a "volunteer" to check on the hammer with the excuse of being a Magical Artifact Expert. He eyed the hammer, before reading the inscription, and tried lifting it. He had no such luck and ended up eyeing everyone who approached it.
'Like father like son' thought Harry.
It had been a week and a half when it happened. Ron, Ginny and the twins were surprised to see the rest of their family by the teachers' table on Monday morning. They quickly approached them soon reuniting in a group hug.
"What are you doing here?" asked Ron who had a bright smile on his face.
"Order business" responded Percy.
"Dumbledore wanted a couple of extra eyes on that thing" said Charlie pointing at the hammer.
"Don't you think the Ministry will find that suspicious?" asked Fred.
"Yeah." continued George. "I mean no offense I'm glad to see you all, but what if Fudge finds out?"
"That won't be a problem" said Arthur confidently. "I offered Bill's help as a curse breaker to bring him here, but a certain professor of yours wasn't too convinced with two Weasleys at Hogwarts, so Percy offered himself as a supervisor, a good thing we decided to make him our spy in the Ministry. After that I called up Charlie who was staying in a pub in London, he told the new head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports that the payment for bringing the dragons to Hogwarts last year had been wrong. He's new at the job and didn't really know about the Tournament so he told him to go with Dumbledore to set everything right. Your mother would not be staying at home when all of you were here so I brought her with me, and well here we are."
"Brilliant dad" said Fred.
"Absolutely-" continued George.
"Marvelously-"
"Wickedly-"
"Brilliant dad!" they finished together.
Mr. Weasley blushed and grinned, while Mrs. Weasley was reprimanding the twins and told them that they should not replicate such behavior. Bill had asked his brothers and sister if they saw anything suspicious. They told them everything that had transpired through the week: Neville and Cedric's ability to slightly move the hammer, Fudge making a fool of himself, Malfoy senior's visit (which caused a scowl to appear on Mr. Weasley's normally calm face). When they finished telling all of them what had happened, Charlie went on to ask almost playfully if any of them had tried. The twins looked irritated at the question and were growling while looking at their feet, muttering something along the lines of 'stupid hammer'. Ginny said that she had tried a day before the Minister came to Hogwarts and had failed just like everyone else. The rest of the Weasleys were now looking at Ron who was watching the Gryffindor table behind him, he seemed completely uninterested in the conversation. He must have noticed the silence that fell over the conversation, because he turned to see his family with expectant looks.
"Oh me?" asked Ron, while Bill, Charlie and Percy failed to hide their eye rolling. "I don't know." he said with a shrug of his shoulders.
"What do you mean you don't know?" asked Percy.
"I haven't tried."
"Why haven't you?" asked Charlie.
"There's no point." Ron said nonchalantly.
"What do you mean there's no point?!" Bill was enraged by his brother's lack of action.
"I mean there's no point. If Dumbledore couldn't move it and Harry didn't manage to move it an inch off the ground what chance have I got?"
"Oh Ronald, don't be ridic-" said Mrs. Weasley.
"Can anyone here look me in the eyes and tell me I'm the first thing that they think of when they hear the words worthy and pure of heart" interjected Ron clearly annoyed by this conversation.
Everyone looked at Ron. Bill looked like he wanted to say something, but one raise of the eyebrows from Ron told him to better be telling the truth and he looked back at his feet. Ron looked at his feet as well, embarrassed for losing his temper. He raised his head and saw his family basically mimicking his actions. The twins were looking everywhere but at Ron, and his mother was looking between Ron's feet and his father's eyes.
"Don't feel bad." Ron said, gaining the attention of his family. "It's nothing special, it's like telling me I'll never have an O on a Potions' essay, I don't expect an O in any Potions' essay so if Snape were to come to my desk and tell me I got an A in my essay, it wouldn't matter that much to, because I wasn't ever expecting an O." when Ron finished his family was giving him looks of concern. "Look, don't worry about it let's just eat for now." Ron's family, albeit reluctantly, followed him to the Gryffindor table.
The tension dissipated quickly as the Weasleys joined the Gryffindor table. There were still a pair of students that tried lifting the hammer, none were successful. It was still a quiet morning when suddenly a distant thunderous sound resonated throughout the Great Hall. Everyone looked at each other as the thunderous sound became louder and louder. Dumbledore had stood up and had his wand in hand, when he noticed his glass of mead had begun shaking he bellowed. "Prefects lead your Houses back to the dormitories immedia-!" His voice was quickly interrupted when the doors of the Great Hall were banged open, and a giant was at its entrance.
