Academy City wasn't exactly the calmest place in the world. After all, it was the city of schools where people were constantly studying or developing something. Even now, the technology within was already 20 or 30 years ahead of what existed outside its tall, thick walls.

But the city's greatest treasure were the students – kids, teens. They went through a special Power Development Curriculum and became espers. Acquiring abilities that would make them protagonists in some manga.

But despite that, they were still kids. And foolery came as naturally to kids as breathing. They would goof around, pick fights and butt heads with the adults. Over the silliest reasons.

Now, imagine mad scientists and kids with superpowers confined to one place, with some relatively normal people added to the mix. Naturally, Academy City was like a boiling volcano.

Winter was an especially harsh season. With the rapid development of technology, various groups and companies would go to great lengths to promote their inventions. And what was the best chance to show off if not at some grand festivity?

Academy City had just about survived Christmas with its missile-like sledges and the colorful, explosive fireworks on New Year. But now a new calamity was approaching – Valentine's Day.

As soon as February rolled in the mania kicked off. First the posters started sprouting about, soon joined by the banners. Then it spread to the commercials promoting some lean rig that would practically make chocolate for you. The cherry on the cake were the cooking shows where experts and celebrities discussed the best recipes.

Before long normal people succumbed to the disease. There was no helping it, really, with so many kids around. Young minds clouded by passion. Some were open about their plans. Others played it cool while secretly hoping it wouldn't be the most miserable day in their life. But both eagerly awaited the 14th.

The mere thought of Valentine's brought smiles to the kids' faces. Long stares, drumming hearts. Time flew by in some silly game of winks, bickering and teases.

And then came the lucky 13, the day before all hell breaks loose, and chocolate flooded the city.

It was everywhere – in supermarkets, drug stores, at stalls and in vending machines. Normal chocolate, milk chocolate, raisin, nut. Chocolate gum and fruits. Extra sweet chocolate, "healthy" chocolate… A sea of it, really. If another heatwave was to hit the city, it would drown in that delicious liquid.

There just was no escaping this madness…
