Explanation
It was another slow Wednesday afternoon at the Sector V Treehouse when Chad crashed through their window. There were no missions and there was nothing good on tv. Inside the colossus treehouse, four kids sat on a red couch mindlessly watching t.v. Number 2 was hunched over with his head in his left hand as he used the other to flip through different programs while Number 5 and Number 1 stared disinterested at the large screen. Meanwhile, the usually happy go lucky operative, Number 3, was dozing off on the couch with drool dripping down her chin and staining her green shirt. The worst of them all, however, was Number 4 who grew more and more irritated at Number 2.
"Oh for crying out loud, just picky a cruddy channel already!" Number 5 jerked her head at the Australian operative and Number 3 snapped awake at his booming voice.
"Huh? Did you find the Rainbow Monkey channel?" Number 3 groaned in her disoriented state.
"No, because tech boy here won't stop changing the channels!"
"There's nothing good on. It's either some boring adult show or some old cartoon I've already seen," the brunette disinterestedly replied. "I've never been this long without going on a mission." Number 5 leaned back into the couch cushions. Number 5 grabbed the rim of her cap and tugged it over her eyes while smoke billowed out of his ears and fire burned in his eyes.
"NUMBER 2, JUST PICK SOMETHING! ANYTHING!"
"Aaannnddd… got it!" Number 2 exclaimed at a science documentary about the inner workings of the brain. "There, I finally found it-"
*CRASH*
A flying figure crashed through the treehouse window and collided into the large television. The team gawked in surprise at not only the intruder who had suddenly broken into their top secret classified base after weeks of no boredom, but at their now broken mega plasma t.v. system. It had taken them weeks to steal that t.v. from the Delightful Children from Down the Lane and it would probably take them longer to get a new one. The furious kids glared at their sector's newest enemy among the broken glass and cracked flatscreen with smoke billowing from it. The Kids Next Door agents' expressions changed, however, when they saw the perpetrator was an older boy in his early teens with blond hair, steaming rocket boots, and a B.R.A. or more appropriately, Battle Ready Armor.
"Ugh, my head," the thirteen year old groaned as he pushed himself up to his feet. The teen was their former Kids Next Door supreme leader, Number 274 a.k.a. Chad Dickson, before he later betrayed the Kids Next Door and joined their group's sworn enemy, the Teen Ninjas.
"Finally," exclaimed Number 4 as he and the rest of Sector V jumped up from the couch ready to fight. Each kid was armed with their weapon of choice, ranging from a S.P.L.A.N.K.E.R. or a Solid Pine Loaded Artillery Nicely Kicks Enemy Rear to their leader's personal favorite, the S.P.I.C.E.R, a name which hardly needed explaining. The ten year olds menacingly stared at their former beloved leader turned enemy bitterly as Number 1 stepped forward and for the first time all week, he screamed,"Kids Next Door: BATTLE STATIONS"!
"Wait!," Chad raised his hands in defense, a look of visible terror overtaking him. "Just hear me out, ok? I wasn't trying to break into your base."
Numbers 1-5 glanced at one other visibly confused before resuming their previous defense stances.
"Yeah, right. Like we would believe anything you say teenager!" Number 1 retorted, pointing his G.U.M.Z.O.O.K.A. or Gumball Utilizing Mechanism Zings Overabundance Of Kandy Around inches away from the older boy's face.
"I'm serious! I'm not interested in attacking you Babies Next Door today," Chad sighed as he stood up and brushed some of the glass off of his Teen Ninja uniform.
"Well then why did you bust through our window?" asked a honestly curious Number 3.
"I was trying to get to the Delightful Brats house before the ceremony takes place and I wasn't really paying attention so that's how I ended up flying through your window."
"What ceremony?" said Number 1.
"I don't have time to explain. Cree's in a lot of danger, but she doesn't know it yet." Numbers 1-5 audibly gasped at the news that Cree Lincoln, ruthless former Kids Next Door agent turned traitor, Number 11, was in any real sort of danger.
"What kinda mess has my big sister gotten herself into this time?" Number 5 exasperatedly asked. The blonde watched as the group of impatient kids fidgeted impatiently and he audibly groaned.
"Fine, if you brats must know. Today at 3:00, Father is hosting a ceremony at his house. Cree thinks that it's supposed to be a promotion party from being his apprentice to actually earning money. I thought the same thing, until I overhead him on one of his house security camera monitors." The five kids slowly lowered their weapons as they continued to listen to the teen.
"It was my turn to survey the radio lines and security systems for anything that might be useful to the Teen Ninjas when I flipped to Father's security systems."
"What did you see?" said Number 2.
"I saw Father and his creepy kids standing around a grey helmet with three light bulbs sticking out the top and three dials on the front."
"The YesDear5000?" said Number 1.
"Yeah, how do you know?" a surprised Chad asked while the kids looked at one another knowingly.
"Let's just say we've had a few run-ins with it," Number 1 responded.
"Then you should know that Father is planning on using that thing on Cree to control her mind, just like his "children" Chad stressed in air quotes. "When I saw and heard what was on the control panel, I ditched my shift and came rushing over here," he concluded as he walked over to the window. "I have to stop him before he turns Cree into a mindless drone." Number 5 watched as the teen braced himself to fly away from their treehouse while the other operatives were already discussing the matter of their broken t.v. She could have walked away from the situation and left Chad to his own devices, but a pain throbbed in her chest and a lump in her throat.
"Chad, wait!" she called to the boy with one leg hanging out the window. "I'm coming with you," Number 5 exhaled.
"Number 5, you can't be serious!" Number 1 interjected, "Cree is our enemy and a traitor to the Kids-"
"She's my sister and I'm going," Number 5 firmly stated as she walked past her sector's leader, Nigel Uno, and towards their organization's former leader. "You're going to need someone to help you fight Father and his nightmare Brandy Bunch," Number 5 cooly responded to the shocked teenager.
"*sigh* If Number 5 is going, then I'm going too," Number 2 declared before marching over to the duo. "As if you guys know how to disable 2x4 technology," the larger boy scoffed at a smiling Number 5 and former 274.
"Aye, wait a minute!" Number 4 angrily shouted. "If you guys think you're going to fight Father and those delightful dorks without me, you've got another thing coming!"
"Me too!" Number 3 chimed in as she and Number 4 joined the growing group by the window.
"Guys, come on! We can't just…*sigh*" Number 1 hung his head and dropped his shoulders in defeat.
"What do you say Number 1?" said Number 5.
"Hmph, alright, but I won't like it," Sector V's leader reluctantly agreed with a weary smile. "A true leader never abandons their team, even when they're wrong," Number 1 smugly teased at his smiling teammates.
"Fine, I'll meet up with you guys outside Father's mansion," said Chad before proceeding to jump out the window, leaving smoke trails behind him.
"Number 2, fire up the C.O.O.L.B.U.S. We have a party to crash."
Meanwhile, inside a walled off property with a pond, a maze, a pavilion, and a large orange and blue mansion that could only be described as "delightful" stood five well behaved children and a dark figure with a pipe.
"The day has come my children," Father stated while rubbing the grey helmet in front of him. "You children know the plan, right?"
"Yes Father," the children said in unison. "We will place the device on her head while she is distracted talking to you and then you will turn in on with your remote control."
"Excellent my children, Chives, bring my apprentice. It's time for the ceremony to commence." Father strode out of the room while the children carried the helmet behind him, completely oblivious to the six pairs of eyes that had witnessed everything.
"Father turning on his own apprentice? I mean, I knew Father was evil, just not that evil," Number 1 disheartenly shook his head.
"I myself still don't understand why he would do this, but it doesn't matter now. We have to stop Father from putting that mind control helmet on Cree before it takes over her brain," the older boy remarked matter of factly, the kids nodded in agreement. "Okay, here's the plan, Numbers 1-4 will try and snatch the device out of those twerps grubby hands-"
"Woah, woah, woah, hold on just a second! Just because we are working together doesn't mean you get to be in charge" the bald leader interjected. "We don't take orders from teenagers and we especially don't take orders from traitors, teen boy," Number 1 scoffed as the two locked eyes in an enraged stare off.
"You twerps didn't have to come! I could have done this on my own," Chad rebuffed. Before long, the two angrily began bickering amongst themselves while the other operatives watched helplessly, all except for Number 5.
"Huh, you couldn't even beat Number 4 in a fight! What makes you think you're competent enough to lead this mission?"
"Competent enough? I was the supreme leader of the Kids Next Door for five years, idiot!"
"Keyword, you were the leader-"
"SHUT UP!" The two ceased their bickering and they, along with the other operatives, stared at Number 5. "My sister is about to be turned into a mindless zombie and you two are fighting about who gets to be the leader?" Both Sector V's leader and former KND leader shamefully stared at their feet knowing the Lincoln girl was right. "Now, if you two are done arguing, I have my own plan." The kids and teen intently listened to Number 5 before the group split to put their plan into motion. Numbers 1-4 climbed through the window while Chad and Number 5 made their way around the side of the house.
"We need to find Cree in case they can't destroy the helmet in time," Chad whispered to Number 5, the duo currently dangling on the side of the Delightful Mansion.
"Once we reach the balcony, we'll have a better view of the first floor," Number 5 replied, the girl momentarily taking over her rep cap to wipe the sweat off her brow. "By the way, I've been meaning to ask you, why do you care so much about what happens to Cree?"
"Huh?" The blond momentarily froze before shrugging it off. "What kind of question is that? Wouldn't you do the same for your teammate?"
"My sector and Cree are not the same thing and you know it," Number 5 rebuttaled at the teen, the pair finally reaching the balcony. "You could have easily called some lackeys to warn Cree about Father, but instead, you came here yourself. Why?" Chad angrily glared at Number 5, the latter unimpressed, before letting out a deep sigh.
"I...she saved me." Number 5's stony demeanor morphed into one of confusion. "I sacrificed five years of my life for the Kids Next Door and I was going to get them wiped from my memory all because I turned 13," the teen lamented. "I did everything I could to keep my memories, I even betrayed the very organization I had sacrificed my childhood to. She rescued me from getting decommissioned, she knew what it was like to be thrown away after she grew too old for the same people she defended. Now, it's my turn to return the favor." Images of the teen girl swirled around the confines of his mind, her long locs and smile were the first things that stood out to him when they first met as operatives and again as escapee and Teen Ninja. Cree was the only girl he knew whose smile was smug and sweet at the same time.
"Look Chad, there's Cree," Number 5 nudged, snapping the teenager out of his daydream. Several feet below them, the sixteen year old sauntered across the creme colored marble floors. She was sporting the same grey and red Chad with the exception of a metal skirt instead of metal tassets.
"I better be getting promoted today. There's only so much learning a student can do before they succeed the master *heh*," the Teen Ninja chuckled at her clever remark as she headed towards the basement.
"She must be going to Father's study, come on," the girl jumped onto the large bannister and slid down it backwards, the teen following suit.
"How do you know?"
"Remember when you guys threw a party here? Who do you think created the potato explosion afterwards?" Once they reached the first floor, Number 5 and Chad hopped off the banister and ran towards the basement after Cree. The duo opened the basement door only for them to be met by a series of long, dark passageways; it was a disorienting sight, even for Number 5 who had traveled through them before.
"Ah crud, which way do we go?"
"Hold on, let Number 5 think," the operative grumbled, her heart beginning to pound louder and louder until the only thing she could hear was the rhythm of her heart.
"It's so dark down here, the only thing I can make out are the sounds of our voices."
"That's it!"
"Huh?"
"Just because we can't see anything doesn't mean we can't hear." Number 5 took a deep breath, just like her father had taught her to do whenever he was giving her a checkup in his office, and closed her eyes. Sound waves reverberated around the ten year old to her right, the sound resembled footsteps growing fainter with each step.
"This way," the girl grabbed the older boy's arm and led him through the dark for several minutes, occasionally bumping into a wall or into some coffee table that lined said walls. The pair continued this pattern of stopping, listening, running, bumping, and repeating until they knocked over something in front of them or rather, someone.
"Ow, what the heck?!"
"Cree?!," Chad and Number 5 gasped.
"Chad? Abby?" Silence filled the space between the trio before a rustling sound could be heard and then a burst of light from Cree's phone. "What are you guys doing here? If Father finds out-"
"That's why we're here," Number 5 interrupted, "Father is going to betray you and force you to become a zombie slave."
"What are you trying to pull, Crabigail," Cree sneered.
"She's telling the truth. Father's going to put this helmet on your head called the YesDear5000 that turns whoever wears into a mindless pawn to whoever has the remote."
"Now why would Father do that?" Cree scoffed before folding her arms.
"Because...because…" Chad rubbed his temples before it hit him. "You would do everything that he wants you to do now without worrying about you eventually betraying or overthrowing him." Cree and Number 5 stood dumbfounded before the older girl began to snicker.
"Jeez Chad, if you wanted an invite, you could have just asked. You didn't have to drag my sister all the way here to-"
"Hey! Give it back, you delinquiets," a chorus of voices exclaimed from down the hall along with a series of thuds and muffled voices. The trio rushed over towards the dark door to the sight of five kids in uniforms and four kids with 2x4 weapons wrestling in a pile on the floor.
"Get off me, you cruddy rule following psychos! Number 1, I got the helmet!" Number 4 triumphantly declared as he held the mind controlling device.
"This matter does not concern you, kids!" The delightfulized kids hissed.
"See sis?! That's the thing they were going to put on your head to control your mind!"
"I-I…," Cree uttered, a look of pure disbelief visible on her face as she struggled to find the words to express how she felt.
"Let's get out of here before Father comes ba-" Number 5 felt something hot touch her shoulder before noticing that the rest of the room had grown silent. "He's right behind me isn't he?" Everyone in the room slowly nodded in agreement, the horror evident on their faces, even from the Delightful children.
"Well my apprentice," Father calmly spoke before shoving Abby out of the way, "When I asked you to meet with me today, I didn't expect that you would bring a gaggle of brats with you." Number 5 joined her friends as they watched Cree's stance grow rigid while Chad stood still in place.
"Father, what were you going to do with that device?," she softly asked.
"Oh that old thing. My children found it hidden in the bottom of Gallagher Elementary after some kid failed to force some fourth grader to be his girlfriend. I just wanted to see how it worked before using it against the Kids Next Door," the dark figure nonchalantly explained away. "Cree, I think it's time our guests be shown out the door," Father gestured towards Sector V. In response, she merely bit her bottom lip in shame and took a step towards her sister and her friends before feeling a tight grip on her left arm.
"Cree, don't do this," Chad pleaded, breaking his silence. "Father is just using you and you know it. You don't need him." Cree trembled in shame as she tried to pull her arm back from Chad.
"I don't need anyone to save me. I don't need anyone."
"Yeah, well I do!" He felt his cheeks becoming damp and sticky as hot tears streamed down his face, but he refused to let go of Cree's arm. "I need you, okay? I need you to be okay. You taught me that I didn't need the Kids Next Door to be happy because you did. Why can't you do the same?"
"Apprentice, I'm not going to ask you again..." Chad felt Cree reach for his hand and firmly remove his fingers, she held them in her hand for a moment, rubbing them, before releasing them.
"Don't worry about me," Cree muttered, a calm, but sad expression on the former Kids Next Door agent's face. The teen reached for the helmet that was in the blonde operative's grip and handed it to Father.
"Excellent work, my apprentice. I knew you wouldn't be swayed by a bunch of snot nosed brats."
"Hey Father, there's one thing I need to tell you before I take care of these kids."
"Yes my apprentice."
"No one tricks Cree Lincoln and gets away with it," she said with a smirk as she aimed her suit's built in laser at the device. "Oh and by the way, I quit." Chad sprint towards Sector V and shattered the office's large glass windows with his own laser before Cree shot the helmet.
"It's gonna blow!" Number 2 warned before Chad and Cree grabbed Numbers 2-5 before jumping out the window along with Number 1 following behind them, leaving Father alone with the terrified kids.
"Well, it's official," Father sighed. "I hate teens as much as I hate children-" *BOOM* A large explosion blew out the side of the Delightful Mansion, creating large plumes of smoke into the late afternoon sky.
"Hey, be careful! I don't want to fall into the wa-wa-water," Number 4 demanded, trembling like a leaf against Chad as he carried both him and Number 3 while Cree carried Number 2 and her sister.
"Quit your whining, squirt. If it weren't for our rocket shoes, you would have blown up back there like Father and his goons." While Number 4 would normally punch someone's lights out for calling him "squirt," he decided to let it slide since he really didn't have much of a choice.
"Well Chad, since we helped you rescue your girlfriend from being brainwashed, don't you think you owe us something in return?," Number 1 smugly asked as he flew besides the duo with his own rocket shoes.
"Yeah Chad," the Numbers 3 and 4 teased as the embarrassed teenager began to scowl and slightly blush.
"Looks like you got some competition Number 2," Number 5 giggled to her disgruntled companion.
"Cree is NOT my girlfriend," Chad childishly objected.
"That doesn't mean you don't want her to be," Number 3 rebuttaled.
"If you kiddies don't knock it off, you better learn how to fly because I'm not playing with you," Cree threatened effectively shutting the kids up.
"Chad and I won't plan any attacks on you guys for the next two weeks and in return you tell nobody about this incident, got it?" The kids eagerly smiled at the teen's bribery in spite of its threatening tone, knowing that this was the closest they were ever going to get to a thank you from the hardened Teen Ninja.
"And as for you," Cree pointed at Chad, "I owe you a free meal. Does the Romantic Burger sound good?"
"Yeah-yeah, sure?" Chad nervously stammered and his body felt weak as the group continued flying over the ocean as the sky grew darker behind them.
"Aye, teen boy. You're going to drop us!"
"Shut up!"
