My Mate Saga
Creatures of the Night
Chapter One
Dr. Julia Spencer.
The stories of monsters were true.
As a young girl who grew up in the country, my parents always taught me the dangers of the woods. The warning of snakes, bears, mountain lions, bobcats, and even wolves. What they didn't warn me about, was a creature far more dangerous and way more sinister.
When you think of tales like Dracula, a vampire is a devilishly handsome human turned into a monster that feasted on the blood of beautiful women and hid away in dark castles. Fast forward to modern times and you have stories like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Blade, Underworld, and even the Vampire Diaries that painted vampires more in a tend rather than the frightening reality that is a predator.
My first encounter with one of the creatures of the night was when I was a child. On my parent's farm, there was a large portion of the forest that lined the side of where our barn was. It proved tough to keep the foxes out of our chicken coop, especially with the woods being so close. When I was ten years old, my father sent me to make sure the latch on the chicken's coop was secure because he forgot to check at sundown. Being the brave soul that I was, I only armed myself with a flashlight. But even if I had a weapon, it would prove useless to the hidden monster I was about to encounter.
The soft moan of one of our cows met my ears as I passed by the barn, noticing the door had been cracked open. My mind immediately thought a fox had decided to venture into the larger animal pens and our cow was in distress. Pushing the barn door open, I shined my flashlight around till it landed on our cow's lifeless body.
A scream made its way up my throat but it never left my mouth as my eyes focused on a humanoid body that towered over the body, wiping its mouth with a clothed sleeve. Its body was large and pale, its eyes dark and blood ran down its throat. Like a deer stuck in headlights, I was frozen as the creature's eyes moved to me, its expression evolving into a face of shock. Its mouth opened as a gutter growl emitted from its throat. It looked like a man but didn't at the same time. Was I dreaming? What kind of nightmare was this?
As I took a step back, my whole body hit the floor in a state of pure fear and shock. As if sleep paralysis overtook my body, I was helpless as the creature stood above me, looking down at me in almost a curious fashion.
Suddenly our dogs began to bark and the creature quickly looked towards my house before giving me a large toothy grin. In flash it was gone, leaving me there.
My parents wouldn't have believed me if they didn't see the giant teeth marks on their precious cow, drained completely of all its blood.
They made me swear to never speak of the incident, they told me the townspeople would think we were insane, trying to pose a hoax.
Thirty years later I am determined to reveal the truth. Vampires are out there, they're real and they are not what we believe. After years of college and countless studies and research, I've gathered enough evidence to bring Vampire into the world.
A few pieces of evidence include interviews I've had with witnesses. One is a small boy.
The video shows a young boy sitting in the middle of a room on a metal chair. It was a small child, age 5 most likely. His dark brown eyes were wide with fear and his arms wrapped themselves around his tiny frame. He was slightly shaking, his brown locks in wisps as they fell around his chubby face.
Dr. Spencer was seen stepping up to the boy and lowering herself to whisper in his ear. She was tall and lanky, with blonde hair that was tied in a braided bun. She wore thick black glasses and a modest outfit with a lab coat.
Once she stepped away, she took her spot out of the view of the camera. There was the sound of rustling paper and a click of a pen. Then Dr. Spencer's voice filled the interrogation room; her voice was full and firm, but gentle at the same time.
"Okay Brandon, can you tell me what you saw last Saturday night? When you were playing at the park with your friends?"
The little boy's eyes flickered to Dr. Spencer then flashed back to the camera. His voice was small and quiet, and if it weren't for the microphone pinned to his shirt, he would have been inaudible.
"I-I saw a monster."
There was the sound of scribbling before Dr. Spencer spoke up again.
"Can you describe the monster?"
"It was big…and white and black. It looked like a m-man but- but it wasn't! It had red eyes."
"Did you speak to it?"
"No."
"Did it speak to you?"
"N-no, but it growled at me when it saw me looking."
"Growled?"
"Yeah like a dog."
More scribbles.
"What else did it do?"
"It stared at me, then it disappeared!"
"Did you look away and when you looked back it was gone?"
The boy shook his head.
"No! I never looked away! It just vanished before my eyes! Like a magician!"
Dr. Spencer scratched her pen against the paper once more.
"Thank you Brandon, you have been a very big help."
The little boy's terrified face remained still as the camera flicked off.

My eyes watched the video for the fifth time. Brandon was a seven-year-old boy who had similar experiences with these vampires as I did. Again, like me, he survived the encounter. Although there was something different with this vampire he came in contact with. He claimed he had red eyes, while the one I remembered had dark gold. This vampire was also closer to the human population, which worried me greatly.
The vampire that I encountered was caught draining the body of a cow, but I had speculations that these creatures also feasted on humans. It would make sense-the folk tales and scary stories of vampires had to come from somewhere.
Reports of missing hikers, cold cases and other disappearances raised suspicion during my research. There were countless witness reports of these strange-looking humans, but none of them made headlines. Bigfoot was a bigger star.
I shook my head, moving onto the next video.
Many Indian reservations have also reported the mysterious disappearance of their tribe members, claiming to have been taken by creatures known as the 'cold ones'. I was lucky enough to be able to interview a native chief of the La Push Quileute tribe.

The video flashed on to an older-looking man who wore traditional Native American clothes. His face was obviously aged and a frown permanently creased his lips. He stared at the camera with tired bored eyes, heavy with no interest.
A clearing throat could be heard before Dr. Spencer's voice filled the audio once more.
"Ephraim Black, could you tell us of the legends surrounding the concept of the "Cold ones?"
Ephraim Black seemed to glare at the blonde scientist. His voice was low and deep.
"There is no 'concept'. The truth is; the cold ones are real and they are out there. Lurking in the woods, ready to catch their next meal."
"And what exactly are they hunting?"
"What do you think? The disappearances? Nobody found? Tell me, Dr. Spencer, what do you think they are hunting?"
His voice was sarcastic yet serious.
Dr. Spence shuffled uncomfortably.
"Have you ever seen one?"
A gruff snort exploded from the old chief's throat.
"You think I would be alive if I did? My tribe takes great steps to ensure our safety. Still, we have a missing person from the reserve every year."
"What steps do you take?" Dr. Spencer asks.
Ephraim Black crosses his arms and leans back in his chair. "I'll say this once. No one can stop a cold one. If this research bullshit your doing brings them into the public's eye, you'll be forcing them to reveal themselves. And that spells disaster."
"Disaster? Care to elaborate?"
Ephraim Black looked unamused as he leaned forward in his seat, his eyes staring intently at the scientist. "Have you ever heard of vampires?"
"Vampires? You mean as in Dracula?"
It was Dr. Spencer's turn to laugh.
Ephraim Black looked unamused as he leaned forward in his seat, his eyes staring intently at the scientist.
"No, I'm not talking about that pathetic fictional character. No these creatures were not born human and turned into the bloodsucking leaches as we know in the stories. No…These are a whole new species of their own. Their origin is unknown, but they were created for a reason. And that reason is to keep the human population down. And they do that, by feeding."
The old chief sat back in his chair, a satisfied smirk across his face.
Dr. Spencer was silent.
The video turned off.

With the new modern age and rise in technology, more videos and pictures of these creatures began surfacing. The government caught wind of my research and I was pulled into a top security meeting.
"Are you saying vampires are real Dr. Spencer?" A man dressed in a dark suit questions me.
"90% of the ocean is undiscovered. Who's to say mermaids don't exist? There are miles upon miles of unpopulated land in North America, it's quite possible a species has yet to be truly discovered."
"But you say these 'creatures' look like humans?"
"They do, that's how they attract us to them. They feed off of blood, but it's apparent that they don't need to feed on humans to survive. There are still a lot of unknown factors here. Until I can capture one myself, I won't truly know."
"Is it possible to capture one?" He continued to ask me.
"With your funding and my team, anything is possible," I answered back smartly, grinning at the man.
He nods to the other officials and they push a folder towards me. "Congratulations Dr. Spencer, Project Vampire has been approved and officially funded by the United States Government."
I stood to my feet and shook his hand. "Thank you so much!"
Since then, we had everything planned out. I was going to get my hands on a vampire, and I, Dr. Julia Spencer, was going to be the first real Vampologist in the world.
