Prologue:
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Hey, guys. I wanted to try my hand at a Twibra fanfiction to see if I could make it work. I find Sombra to be a very hard character to redeem so I wanted to see if I could write a story well enough to make a reformation story that is believable. I took his comic book story and implemented it into this story. I also noticed that there isn't a lot of fanfics involving TwilightxSombra so I wanted to make my own. This fanfic took inspiration from Bride of Discord by DisneyFanatic2364 and Shadowy Love by FinnPony, both of which I highly recommend. Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy it.
Once upon a time, in the land of Equestria. There was a princess in the Crystal Empire named Princess Amore. As the Princess of Love, her job was to use her magical powers and the Crystal Heart to spread love to everypony in the Crystal Empire and beyond.
However, not everything was well and good. The Crystal Empire was fighting against creatures called the umbrum, also known as shadow ponies. One day, crystal guards found a lone gray and black unicorn freezing in the Frozen North. No mother was in sight, so they took him back to the Crystal Empire. The only thing that the pony could say was one thing, 'Sombra'. So that is what he was called from then on.
Princess Amore decided to put him in the orphanage. That is where Sombra grew up and met a unicorn filly, Radiant Hope. They both became good friends and would do everything together. One day, Radiant Hope invited him to join her in going to the Crystal Faire. Unfortunately for Sombra, he fell ill that day. He lost all movement in his legs and he would run high fevers. The next day, however, it was as if he was never sick.
He figured he'd just go next year, but each year it just kept happening. Every single year he would fall horribly ill on the day of the Crystal Faire. This didn't change, even when he became an adolescent. Radiant Hope would sit by his bedside and attend to his every need, but things never changed.
One day, Radiant Hope had gotten a letter from the two sisters to come study with them. Sombra was enraged that he would probably never see her again, so he ran out of the city into the Frozen North. Little did he know that he ran back to where he was found as a colt. Little did he know he would meet somepony or something that would change his life forever.
Out in the cold snow and wind, he met his mother. A red crystal jutting out of the snow. She told him that he was not made of pure crystal like the other ponies in the Crystal Empire but of darkness. He was a creature of smoke, a creature of shadow, a creature of anger. Just like that, she awakened the dark magic inside of him. With it, he managed to steal the Crystal Heart. Princess Amore tried to convince him to change but in his anger, he turned her to stone. He shattered her statue, spreading her pieces across Equestria. Radiant Hope witnessed this and discovered the darkness in Sombra's heart. Sombra offered to make Radiant Hope his queen, but she refused and fled to Canterlot.
Sombra, however, did not chase after her. He became the king of the Crystal Empire and enslaved the crystal ponies. His reign of terror was over when Radiant Hope informed the two sisters. After that, they vanquished him into a prison of ice in the Frozen North.
There were times that he has managed to return, but the Mane Six was always there to vanquish him back to the shadows. Any hope for redemption seemed lost for Sombra...but that was about change.
The cold wind blew as a pony walked through the blizzard in the Frozen North. A gray cloak was covering the pony's body.
The pony stops in an open space. Nopony could see but a few feet away from them. The snow and wind were making it hard to tell where anypony was.
A feminine voice comes from under the gray hood, "Are you sure this is what you want me to do?"
No voice could be heard, however. A few seconds pass with no reply.
"I understand that releasing him is the only way this can happen", the mystery pony responds, "I'm just worried that-".
There was a pause.
"Do I trust you?"
Another long pause.
"Yes...I do".
The mystery pony positions into a fighting stance.
"Alright, I'm performing the spell".
Meanwhile...
It was a cold dark void, barren of any life. Sombra couldn't move, he was as stiff as a statue. The only way the ether could be described was that it was like black ice. Black, cold and barren ice. Sombra had refused Grogar's deal, so he was returned to this place after he was blasted by the spirits of the Elements of Harmony.
He had no clue how long he was down there, but he still remembers his last defeat like it was yesterday. His last defeat was still on his mind. He was confident he could take back his kingdom on his own. He so brazenly and openly defied Grogar, a big mistake on his part. He took back the Crystal Empire, only to be stopped by the Mane Six. They, however, were unaware that he escaped the blast from their elements. He followed the Mane Six to the source of their power, the Tree of Harmony. He destroyed it and made minions out of nearly everypony in Equestria. He even managed to take down The Lord of Chaos himself. Yet, he still lost.
He was in an eternal state of anger and it was only building. The only thing he could do in this void prison of nothingness was remember. Remember his countless failings. Plot revenge on his sworn enemies. Right now, his enemies were definitely the Mane Six. There was this one, however, that he couldn't get off his mind. It was the only one of the Mane Six's names he actually remembered. It was the purple alicorn, Twilight Sparkle. He could almost feel himself tremble in rage at the thought of her, if only he could move.
Sombra thought, They will pay, they will all pay.
Sulking won't bring you any closer to greatness, my son, his mother's voice went off in his head, You are all talk and no action.
There was a pang in Sombra's heart, knowing he had disappointed his mother. She had told him everything he was and what his purpose was. She was the one who unlocked his powers. She started him on the path to becoming great, and he had failed her. He had failed in his mission. He had failed the umbrum army, he had failed the shadow ponies, he had failed his mother.
...I'm sorry.
'Sorry' is just another way of saying 'forget what I've done', she continues, or in this case 'what I have not done'.
What I couldn't do! he corrected defensively, All I can do is try!
Her voice turned aggressive, You can either try or you can succeed!
His confidence had wilted like a flower in the frost.
I gave life to you! I gave you a purpose! I awakened your powers! And you repay me by being a failure! She lambastes him.
Her screaming was giving him a headache. He paused for a moment.
I destroyed the source of their power after I escaped the blast from the Elements of Harmony. Little did I know, they were the Elements of Harmony. I don't see a way to defeat them.
There is always a weakness, she states.
Yes, Sombra continues, We just haven't found theirs yet.
No. YOU haven't found theirs yet, she corrects, and you will find it on your own.
Sombra was in shock.
Mother, what are you implying?
I am not 'implying' anything. I am TELLING you that you will find out their weakness. Until then, I am leaving you on your own.
You cannot be serious, mother!
I can and I am, son! She shouts, Until you find a way to bypass their defenses we have nothing to discuss!
Sombra paused for a moment. He was in shock that his own mother would actually turn her back on him. He felt a strong trembling sensation, but he had no idea why. He just figured he was angry at the fact that his mother would throw him under the chariot.
Mother, I have no idea where to start. They are too powerful for even me. My last encounter with them proved that. What do you expect me to do at this moment? I don't even have a way of getting out of this prison.
The trembling got stronger, Sombra then realized that something was happening. This wasn't his soul trembling out of emotion, there was something about to happen.
Well, now's your chance to find out, son, she confirms his suspicions of what is happening, Report back to me when you have made progress. Until then, I have nothing to say to you.
The trembling was getting stronger, much stronger.
No, mother! Wait! WAIT!
He saw a light emanating out from his soul as it dissipated out of the frigid icy prison.
His body started putting itself back together. He felt something then that he hadn't felt in a long time, wind. He had to admit that it wasn't nearly as cold as the ether, but at least there was no wind down there. All he could feel now was pain. Pain from his body being in frozen stasis.
He started screaming in agony as his body began to form. Sombra never showed weakness, but the pain from being in stasis was just so unbearable that he had to bellow until his lungs hurt. A part of him was glad his mother wasn't there to see him like this.
The same thing happened to him when the Crystal Empire had returned, which resurrected him in the process. He could not move his legs for a while, so he just turned into a black shroud of mist. He remembered when he first tried to break through after many years, just for the new princess to put a spell on the empire to temporarily protect it.
He remembered chasing the new prince along with the Mane Six through the snow and wind. That is where he first saw that purple pony.
Twilight Sparkle.
The mare that always managed to ruin his plans. It wasn't just her, though. That purple dragon also made his blood boil.
Spike.
Or as the crystal ponies call him, Spike the Brave and Glorious.
He would growl at the thought of him if he weren't already screaming.
They'll pay, they'll all pay!
As his body began to completely reform the thought of the Mane Six kept flashing in his mind. His scream dissipated as the last few pieces of him went into place. He levitated down to the snow. The snow crunched as his body pressed against it. He felt as though ice was going through his veins.
He grunted, rubbing his head with his hoof. His eyes started drifting open as he heard the crunching in the snow dissipating. He saw a pony in a gray cloak darting away from him. He tried to lift himself off the ground but his legs felt like pins and needles.
He tried using his magic but no matter how hard he concentrated nothing would happen. He felt his forehead with his hoof and then gasped.
"How? This...this can't be?", he choked on his words.
His hoof could not feel his demonic horn on his head. It was as if it had disappeared.
He looked back at the pony running through the blizzard, they were barely visible through the snow and wind.
"WAIT!", he called with the last of his breath.
With a poof, the pony was gone. The now-empty gray cloak came blowing towards him. It was caught by his face.
The pony must have teleported away, he thought.
He then draped the cloak for warmth. He began to wait. He was waiting for the tingling in his legs to stop. For his body to warm up. To contemplate his next scheme.
