Prologue
Two beautiful baby girls were being held by both of their parents. They were only six months old at the time. Their features were certainly unique: one of the girls had golden-red hair, which contrasted well with her cool blue eyes. However, what truly made her special was the distinct birthmark on her left hand. It was a symbol of unwavering velour, depicting that of the sun. Her figure was held tight by her mother, who looked almost grim in appearance. Her features were scrunched up into a solemn stare, and to what made her mother look like this was still nothing but a mystery to the poor child.
The other child had light blond hair, which seemed to bleed a fervent white. Her eyes were the same as her sister's, and her complimenting birthmark completed the two-sisters look. Her birthmark resembled the moon, rather than the sun; it would seem almost ironic that two special, little girls would have two special, little birthmarks. She was being held by her father who, despite best efforts, bore a face of sadness, as he stood by her mother's side.
They stood in a room full of mirrors. A man came up to the couple, pulling a small smile.
"Mr. Trent." He said, greeting the couple formally.
"Yes, Azarios." Kurtis, who was still holding his daughter, turned to notice him.
"It's time, sir." Four people had come from the mirrors, from two different dimensions. Kurtis was well acquainted with who these people were, for they were specifically chosen- they were among the few people who could say to have earned his trust.
"I see," Kurtis said, turning to look at Lara. "Lara!"
"I know, it's just..." Lara trailed off. It was clear there was apprehension under her voice, hence her quavering speech. To say the least, it was unfair that a mother had to go through something like this, much less live a life like her own.
"They'll make it, they're just like you." Kurtis sighed. "I promised that after we built the Lux Veritatis school, we would settle down. But with Karel back from the dead, and my sister still stuck in the underworld-"
"Don't remind me." Lara interrupted. She repudiated the thought of even having to think of all that was yet to be done, as she looked down upon her baby girl. She still couldn't believe she had given birth to not one, but two beautiful children- the thought just seemed unrealistic. But every time she stared at her daughter's vibrant blue hues, she couldn't help but feel all her worries melt away as she lovingly gazed upon her child. It was cynical to have the writers of fate place such a dangerous journey ahead of two innocent youth. Two youth who were undeserving of even the mildest of trials.
Kurtis looked at the two couples who were standing and waiting. With hesitation, he walked up to the first couple and looked down at his baby girl.
"I'll be back for you my sweet Luna, I promise, my moonlight daughter." Kurtis kissed her on her head and handed her over to the couple, who reciprocated with a smile.
"We will take good care of her in our dimension, Kurtis." They declared. As Kurtis nodded in approval, they headed through the mirror and disappeared.
As they left, a lone tear ran down Kurtis's check, and when he turned, he saw that Lara was trying hard not to burst into tears. A faint, audible whisper could also be heard from Lara.
"Be strong my little sunshine, I'll be back for you soon." Lara said to the other girl in her arms. Similarly to Kurtis, she handed over the little girl to the other couple. "Make sure Klara is raised knowing the world is not safe."
The couple nodded and took Klara from Lara while they walked through the other mirror.
Kurtis took Lara in a warm embrace while layers of resounding silence continued to build. After what seemed like a lifetime of stillness, he whispered into Lara's ear.
"They will be fine, so long Karel never finds them, or the Cabal."
"Then let's go end this for them." Lara said, severing their embrace. Kurtis turned to Azarios.
"Make sure the kids learn all forms of magic that they should need on their journeys. Make sure only trusted people can come here."
"Yes sir, will do so." He responded obediently.
"And Azarios, if one day my daughters come here, make them feel at home if we may not be here." Kurtis said, as Lara grabbed his hand after hearing the mention of death. She prayed with a sincere heart that this wouldn't be the case, but nothing was for certain...
"Sir, I'm not coming with you."
"We are leaving," Kurtis answered. "We are going after Karel and we are going to bring my sister back, so we are trusting you."
Azarios only nodded, and with that, they entered a mirror and also disappeared, never to be heard of again.
