"I...don't want to leave the shop…"
"It's time to get on the road Soma…"
"...time to spread your wings"
'Well….I am here Dad...what did you get me into…." Soma sighed as he remembered his conversation with his father.
"You are taking the transfer test for one of the best cooking schools in Japan…."
"...It's a super elite school with a graduation rate of less than 10%..."
"Thinking you can survive that school till graduation...and get better than me is a laugh"
"I will show you Dad...I will show you what I am worth…" the redhead muttered as he entered through the gate of Totsuki Academy.
10 minutes.
All it took was 10 minutes before Soma lost control of his emotions and strangled Yoshiaki Niakido. The smirk the blonde boy gave Soma when he mentioned he worked at a diner. "A lowly diner for the lower class" was more than enough reason for Soma to snap and wipe that condescending sneer from his face.
"GET OFF ME" Soma yelled as Niakido's butler and guard grabbed his arms, "HE HAS NO RIGHT TO SAY THAT WHEN HE NEVER HAD MY FOOD"
Fuming and breaking free of their grasp, Soma felt the cold stares from the other transfer students. He caught their whispers as he walked towards the examination room.
"You lowly plebeian…."
"Common rabble like yourself will surely fail even the written exam…."
"A common diner boy…."
"Someone from a diner thinks he's got what it takes…."
"Learn your place, commoner…"
"...What a joke…"
"...You are nothing"
'No doubt that all of these people are rich..or famous...or both. What is so wrong with a diner background….I would have been better at Yukihiras...with Mayu...I had a bento dish in mind for Ba-chan…but here I am...to learn how to cook? What does this place have that can make me a better chef?' thought Soma, as he shook his head.
Dark thoughts continued to surround Soma as he entered the examination room with the other transfer students, who all made it a point to distance themselves from him. No way would they want themselves being too close to a commoner.
"If things are like this right off the bat….what is the judge going to be like….I can't see myself being close with any of these people... and I have to do this for 3 years?!…spreading my wings Dad? How can I do that when they clip my wings before I even start cooking? Why did I even agree to his nonsens-' Soma's thoughts were interrupted by shouts from the other students.
"Is that-!"
"Could it be-!"
"Y-Yeah, it's her, the God's Tongue-!"
Soma glanced towards the front 'What in the world is a God's Tongue…' as his eyes focused on two figures.
A girl with long blond hair, dressed in a blue and white Tohtsuki uniform which did well in accentuating her curves, glared at the transfer students with sharp amethyst eyes. She was breathtaking, that much was certain, if her stare didn't reflect such an obvious disdain for the people in front of her. Erina Nakiri, heiress of the Nakiri Empire and 10th Seat of the Elite Ten. Behind her stood her pink haired aide, Arato Hisako, who gave the students an analyzing stare.
'Damn...they seem to be my age...and they are in charge of things like this already?' Soma thought as he gave them both a quick look. Catching the eye of the pinkette, he nodded at her and received a small smile in return.
Nakiri Erina was NOT happy with how her day is going today.
'Transfer students...so this is what I am being tasked with...none of these people are worthy of entering Totsuki..such drivel…', Erina thought angrily
'No matter….I have a way of disposing of such garbage' as she motioned to her aide
"Hisako! Bring out a cooking station, we will be trying something different!"
"Hai Erina-sama!"
Hisako stepped out of the room, and reappeared rolling a table full of ingredients.
"I-Ingredients…?"
"W-what is she thinking..?!"
"W-what is g-going on…"
Erina turned towards the station, and with a smirk, picked up an egg from the table.
"My name is Nakiri Erina, and this is Arato Hisako. It seems all of you know who I am, so I will get to the point. The exam today will be this; make me one dish with the main ingredient being eggs. Only those whose dish impresses me may transfer into Totsuki Academy. All of you…" Erina smiled at the shocked looks from the transfer students as they stared at her, "have one minute, starting now, to exercise your right to abstain from the test".
"H-Huh?"
"S-She can't be serious!"
"I- I abstain!"
Erina turned back around to put down the egg. Behind her, she can hear running footsteps towards the exit; it is obvious that no one would stay to make a dish. No one wants their career ended by the God's Tongue. Any critique she gives will spread throughout the industry...any fail will effectively ruin their chances of making it in the culinary world.
Not that these people will make it far, if they run at the first sign of trouble… she thought.
"Sure enough, a bunch of dimwits with no promise. I can't waste my time on people like that. I am going to my room to try out a new dish, Hisa-"
"E-Erina-sama, there's still one transfer student left" stuttered Hisako, as she eyed the red-head. Someone that is challenging the God's Tongue? 'He has no idea what he is getting himself into….'
'So…' Erina smirked, as she turned around, 'Maybe not everyone is worthless in this transfer group'
"Hisako, pass me his report…Yukihira Soma..." Erina scans through his admission details "Your family...has a diner...in the Sumire shopping district?" 'This commoner thinks he can enter Totsuki?! Impossible, he's a waste of time...I will not have him take one step further...you are not worthy' The heiress glared at this boy for wasting her time. 'and that stupid grin on his face, can he get any more irritating?'
"Restaurant Yukihira, that's right, my dad and I have run the place...Been in the kitchen since I was 3 years old" Soma said sheepishly as he scratched his head. 'Maybe it won't be too bad, I just have to create a dish that will satisfy this… God's Tongue...whatever that means...I wonder if she would like my squid and peanut butter combinat-'
"And you think a commoner like you has what it takes?" retorted Erina. "Totsuki has no need for plebeians like you" Purple eyes meet gold as the girl seethes at the audacity of this red-haired boy. 'How dare he waste my time!'
"Everyone that visited Yukihira's says our food is delici-"
"Nothing about your background shows you can produce quality food, Yukihira Soma. Years of cooking doesn't mean you can produce anything better than subpar food, diner boy" interrupted Erina.
Soma stared at the 10th seat, unable to speak. 'Again with this crap...Is this what this school is about?...she thinks I have to be part of a high class restaurant to produce quality food? It's not all about the chef's background….I will show you what I can do…'
"Well then, if you want me to prove myself, I will be pleased to serve you a specialty from our shop, Miss Nakiri-dono, I will just need a minu-" Soma started again, as he moved forward, unwrapping the headband around his left wrist.
"Enough" said the heiress coldly
'Enough? Are you kidding me?'
"You are not worthy of my time Yukihira Soma, you should know your place and standing. I will give you one last chance to abstain or I will fail you immediately" Erina stated.
'Know my place and standing, the arrogance of this girl...why must there be this comparison...why don't you just try my dish before you judge me…'
"I suggest you leave now, otherwise I will do everything in my power as a Nakiri" Erina said venomously "that your special-of-the-day diner will never open again".
Soma froze. 'So that's how it is,...I don't even have the chance to try, She has already assumed whatever I can make won't be up to her standard...and what's this about making sure the Yukihira's wont open again...damn it it's just like when those land sharks trashed the restaurant..'
Soma's eyes travel from the heiress glare to the girl standing behind her.
Hisako met the redhead's gaze with an apologetic stare but turned away quickly, worried that this may upset her mistress. The heiress's attitude came from the pedestal of being a Nakiri, and Hisako knew all too well that her tongue has ended countless chefs' careers. But now…even Arato Hisako knew that this situation is a bit...dare she say it.. unfair for the redhead. To be condescended and not even given the chance to prove his worth. 'This is a bit cold, even for you, Erina-sama…what did he do to trigger such a response' she thought.
Her eyes met those golden orbs again, and she winced slightly from the confused stare that looked back. The warmth that once shone in those golden eyes was gone, replaced by a glint that contained another emotion she can't figure out yet. 'Frustration? Anger? Sadness?' She shook her head slightly at him. 'Don't, you don't understand what you are getting into…', and looked away again as he stared incredulously back at her. Frustrated, he turned back to look at Nakiri Erina as she narrowed her eyes.
"Time's up Yukihira, I believe you know what you should be doing?"
"I promise you that if you taste my food, you will say it's delicious"
"Why should I? It's diner food!"
"Why do you keep saying it like diner food can't be good?! You haven't even tried it!"
"I don't need to try it! I already know that your so-called "delicious" means nothing to me! Your diner is only still open because the commoners that visit can't tell the difference between what's delicious and what's disgusting!"
"What do you have against the people that visit Yukihira's?!"
"If they keep visiting that stupid diner, that's already enough proof! Clearly, they haven't tasted true gourmet!"
"True gourmet?! Are you even listening to yourself?! What does that even MEAN, NAKIRI !"
"That's exactly my point! If you don't understand, then clearly Yukihira's is a sub-standard diner employing low caliber people!"
"Yukihira's is where my pops and I worked!" shouted Soma, trying to control his anger.
"Don't you dare yell at me, Yukihira Soma! Any dish I make will be miles ahead of what your diner or your mediocre shopping district can do!"
"Not Yukihira's"
"ESPECIALLY Yukihira's"
"I don't understand why you have to keep trashing my family's restaurant!"
"And I don't understand why you keep feeling the need to defend it! A diner with failed recipes and obviously can't make anything goo-"
"IT WAS MY MOM'S DINER! IT WAS HER RECIPES THAT WE FOLLOW! THAT PLACE IS ALL I HAVE LEFT TO REMEMBER HER BY!", roared Soma
"And why does that matte-" Erina stopped.
…
…
…
…
A tense silence filled the room, as the two girls caught the wording said by the redhead, his red bangs covering his face as he stared at the ground.
'Was?' Hisako winced, as she felt her insides clench 'Oh no...it can't be…'
Taking a deep breath, Soma raised his head and looked into the eyes of Nakiri Erina.
"I- I- d-didnt.." Erina flushed furiously, as she tried to find the right words. She bit her lip as she stared at the redhead, trying to read his gaze, but those golden orbs revealed nothing as he fought to keep his emotions under control.
I am sorry Dad, Totsuki is not for me. I know you wanted me to stay at this place for 3 years, but this environment...how can I enjoy cooking this way...and this girl...Nakiri Erina...she will never see me as an equal...
The heiress looked away, unable to meet the stony gaze from the boy. She knew she had hurt him, and she hated herself for it. The words she wanted to say echoed in her mind and her heart was pleading for her to discard her pride...even if it's just for a minute, to apologize. 'I didn't know…I didn't mean to, I am so sorry…'
Returning his stare, Erina opened her mouth to speak but was rendered silent by Soma's voice. There is no warmth in his eyes and his tone was cold, as he addressed her emotionlessly.
"You are right, I don't belong here. It was a mistake coming to this academy in the first place. It is clear to me that you are not able to see past my so-called commoner background. It's bullcrap. Maybe I can't make something that will make you say delicious, maybe I can, but you are not even letting me try!"
Soma continued "Even if it was good in your eyes, you would never admit it, because how could you acknowledge someone with just diner knowledge can please your tastes? So...go ahead, Nakiri Erina, fail me. That's what you wanted to do from the beginning. Do it, and you will never see me again. All I ask is for you to leave me, my Pops and Yukihira's alone. I want nothing to do with you."
Frozen in shock, Erina stared at the redhead, unable to provide a response. No one has ever spoken to her like this before, not since...She felt all her warmth leave as the boy's words cut through her, and her vision blurred as tears threatened to escape, vivid memories of her childhood flashing before her.
'Do not have any mercy, Erina…'
'F-Father, please…! It hurts…!'
'...Anything other than what I, your father, acknowledge is trash. Do you understand?!'
'Garbage…'
'Filth…'
'...Disgusting'
Erina stood motionless, gasping for air as she dug her fingers into her palm. Pain shot through her as her father's words repeated and she lowered her gaze downward as she willed herself to control her emotions. Slowly, her breathing returned back to normal and she could hear the redhead talk once more.
"Forget it Nakiri, it doesn't matter to me anymore...this place.. I am leaving. Sorry that a commoner like me took up your valuable time. Goodbye, princess" he said sarcastically.
Glancing at Hisako, Soma gave her a slight nod, "I am sorry that I won't have the chance to know you better. But if you ever decide to visit Sumire, go to Yukihira's. I will be more than happy to make something for you. Something that will make you say it's delicious"
His stare softened as he gave a small smile to the pinkette as they looked at each other, his golden orbs betraying his emotions as he glanced away. 'Yukihira..' Hisako nodded slowly and gave a sad return smile. 'I am sorry too...Yukihira Soma'
With a final glance at the heiress, Soma turned around and left the examination room. Hisako watched his red hair disappear from her gaze while a lingering silence hung in the air. Shaking her head slightly, she turned towards the heiress.
"Erina-sama?"
Erina broke free from her trance, "Y-Yes?"
"Are you feeling okay? You haven't said anything since…" Hisako stopped as her thoughts jumped back to the redhead
"I- I am fine. H-How dare he talk to me like that! How dare he…" Erina's voice trailed off, flustered at what just happened.
"...Tell me the truth, Hisako...do you think that this Yukihira Soma has what it takes? Did I take this too far?"
Hisako stared at the heiress, surprised at the question, but responded quietly, "No doubt it could have ended better, milady. Maybe Yukihira Soma would have been able to make something to impress you. You wouldn't have been able to know about his circumstances...all he wanted was to take the test to prove to you he belongs here"
Frowning at her aide's words, Erina stared back down at him. 'Yukihira Soma...only he had the nerve to stay and challenge me...and all I did was force him away… I insulted him and never gave him a chance...I need to apologize to him...I will visit his diner to do it if I have to...'
Regaining her composure, she takes out her phone to call her driver to take her back to the Nakiri mansion. Turning to her aide "You are dismissed for today Hisako, no need to accompany me. Head to the admissions office and hand in the entrance exam papers. Tell them nobody passed the transfer exams today".
"Yes Erina-sama" Hisako bowed in acknowledgement
"A-and take this with you, I have no need for this anymore" Erina gave Hisako the boy's admission form.
Giving one last reluctant stare at the boy's photo, Erina walked out of the room. She needed air. She can't break down in front of Hisako as her father's words came rushing back to haunt her.
With a sigh, Hisako glanced at the photo. 'His goofy look...I am sorry that I didn't get to speak up for you...would it have made a difference?' Folding his form, she slipped it into her bag and headed outside, closing the door behind her.
It's a 15 minute walk to the admissions office, and Hisako's thoughts can't help but wander at the situation that unfolded earlier 'Yukihira Soma...Erina-sama…if only the both of you could see eye-to-eye…'
Turning a corner, she saw her destination in the distance, and quickened her pace, brushing past students who were out enjoying the weather outside. 'When was the last time I did that, just...relaxing?' she thought.
In front of her, she notices a figure sitting on a bench, staring into the distance, with his unruly red hair blowing gently by the wind
She stopped. 'Could it be…'
"Yukihira?"
Startled, the figure turned around and those golden orbs locked into her own intently, the gaze strong enough for Hisako to blush slightly.
"Hishoko?"
"I- IT'S HISAKO" she shouted, "HI-SA-KO, YUKIHIRA SOMA"
Chuckling softly, Soma waved her over "Sorry, sorry. I will remember...It's fun though, giving nicknames...I mean...you can give me a nickname if you want! Do you want to sit?" as he shifted his position slightly, not noticing Hisako's face turn even redder.
'W-What is he saying, how can he just say these things without thinking! W-we can't just give each other nicknames! Sigh...never mind…'
"Yukihira...what are you doing here?" Hisako asked, as she sat down beside him.
"I am just taking a breather...considering I won't be a student here...thought I would just stay a bit...I will be leaving to go back to Yukihira's soon" he muttered as his eyes stared at the ground intently.
"This place, this academy, my Pops said that is a place where I can be part of something bigger, where I can learn...where I can improve my cooking...where I can meet and grow with others our age, but...I guess it's just not meant to be…" Soma sighed.
"It's not my day to have Nakiri Erina as the examiner" as he gave a small grin to Hisako. "What could a commoner possibly do to impress the God's tongue" his voice trailed off as he looked away.
The pinkette saw his eyes before he turned away, and she grimaced at the pained look he had before hiding his face from her.
'If Tsukasa senpai was the examiner, he would have treated Yukihira differently. Tsukasa would have gladly given him a chance, and he would have been able to prove himself...but now…'
"I am sorry Yukihira" she said softly as he looked back at her "I could have done more….I should have done more…"
"Hishoko..I- I mean...Hisako" he said hastily as Hisako glared at him "I don't blame you for what happened….it's just...despite everything, I know that not everyone is like the other transfer students or like Nakiri. I will miss this place if there are more people...like you" Soma looked away, a slight tinge on his cheeks as he realized what he said. 'Whoops...that came out wrong'.
'W-What! This idiot, he should really think before he speaks.' Hisako blushed, embarrassed at his straightforwardness… 'but...wait...what does he mean about the other transfer students… did he mean the ones that fled the examination room?'.
"What did they say to you?" Hisako questioned.
"It's nothing...forget I said anything," Soma said quickly, his eyes downcast.
Hisako stared at him with an analyzing look "Yukihira, I know that we just met, but you don't need to hide anything from me. What good will it do to bottle everything up? So...just tell me"
She trailed off, letting the silence take over them both as she waited for him to organize his thoughts.
"It hurts, you know?" Soma said quietly, still looking at the ground. "Back when I was at the diner, no one gave a crap about my status, everyone treated each other equally. But those transfers...they laughed at the mere notion that a diner boy is taking an entrance exam into Totsuki. I tried to get over it Hisako, took it like their words didn't put me down...but then Nakiri...well you know what happened next" Soma shook his head.
'I see why he lost his temper with Erina-sama...can I blame him though? If it was me, would I react the same way? But for him to take on this challenge while everyone else ran...you deserved better than this'
"Judging others is easy because it distracts us from judging ourselves…" Hisako whispered quietly. Soma's eyes stared at her, unsure of whether he had heard correctly "Yukihira Soma, Totsuki does not care about your background...what you have experienced from these transfer students is despicable but it's not the values that Totsuki represents. Your cooking is what matters in this academy, as long as you prove yourself through your dishes, you will be recognized and respected. You are better than all of those transfer students, just look at what you did! You were the only one that stood up and challenged Erina-sama!"
"I know it hurts, and I am sorry that I was a part of it….but you shouldn't be forced to leave because of it. You should stay to prove those transfers wrong, to prove Erina-sama wrong...don't throw an opportunity like this away" Hisako said as she met his stare.
The two never broke eye contact, and Hisako can feel her face burning as those golden eyes stared intensely into her own. She felt herself being drawn in at the unspoken feelings that are radiating from his soft stare… 'Is it surprise? Grateful…? How can his eyes reflect so much...emotion?'
"Why? Why are you telling me this?" Soma asked, still not breaking his stare. "You are Nakiri Erina's aide, shouldn't you be supporting her decision?"
'And there it is….'
Hisako looked away, contemplating her answer while Soma sighed, shifting his gaze towards the students walking by.
"I don't agree with it. I respect Erina-sama but you deserve to at least have a chance"
"Erina-sama regretted her words," she said. Soma shot a surprised look at her, "She may not show it or tell that to you directly, but I know deep down she is hurt over what she said, and if I know her...she wants to apologize to you"
"So she demeans someone and then regrets it afterward, that's what you are telling me", Soma replied.
Hisako gave him a hard look "Erina-sama's childhood was...complicated. Her attitude is because of how she was raised...if you know and understand what she has been through, you will realize her demeanor is a reflection of that."
"I am not asking you to forgive her", she continued as Soma showed signs of retorting, "nor do I expect you to even want to talk to her after all that has happened. I just want to be clear that Erina-sama makes mistakes...just like anybody else...but she shouldn't have to pay for it for the rest of her life. If anything, she is more vulnerable than anyone else here at Totsuki due to the way she was raised. I can't tell you why she became this way but please...when she does approach you, don't walk away from her. Just let her say what she has to say. Can you do that for me?" Hisako gave Soma a pleading look.
Soma smiled softly and shook his head, "You really care about her, huh Hisako." as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"I do, I will do anything for her"
"But you do know that what she said isn't something I can easily forgive, right?"
"I know. But I just want your word that you will try...that's all I ask"
"And you are sure that she will approach and talk to me, considering I am a plebian"
"Yes, and don't call yourself a plebian!"
"...Fine. I will do it if you let me call you Hishoko" he said teasingly, as his face broke into a genuine smile
'This boy…' she huffed, 'He can't be serious but then again…' she sighed
Hisako rolled her eyes, "Deal. Happy?" She giggled at the goofy grin he gave her as the mood lifted.
Taking a deep breath, she asked him "Would you reconsider? Stay at Totsuki?"
"I- I...Yes, but Nakiri failed me already...what choice do I have?" Soma replied.
"She didn't." Hisako said as she took his admission paper from her bag "Look...she didn't stamp a FAIL on it...which means…"
"..I still got a chance" breathed Soma. "...why didn't she…what do I do now?"
Hisako bit her lip 'Transfer exams are done for this year...Tsukasa senpai is too buried under Elite Ten paperwork..and Erina-sama...what CAN we do? Who else has the authority to accept transf-"
And then it hit her.
HIM. ONLY HIM
"Come on Yukihira!" she stood up and pulled Soma on his feet.
"Hisako?! Hey-OW! Wait! Where are we going?" Soma asked as the girl gripped his wrist tightly and dragged him towards the admissions office
"The admissions office! There's someone there who can approve your transfer, we have to hurry!" she said as she pushed him towards the entrance.
Reaching the door, she let go of his wrist as they stopped to catch their breath. Hisako glanced at Soma, who was massaging his wrist slowly and couldn't help but smile slightly at the redhead's actions.
"Let's go Yukihira, the approval isn't going to happen by itself", she grabbed the door handle.
"Hisako, wait-" Soma's hand grabbed hers and pulled her around.
The pinkette gasped, with her face flushed as she stared at the offending hand. Does he not know about personal space, what is wrong with him!
"W-What!?"
"I just want to say...Thanks..for everything" as he gave her a steady gaze. "Look, I am not the best when it comes to explaining how I feel, but this means a lot to me and...regardless of the outcome, I hope we can still stay in touch…". Soma stared at his shoes as he continued.
"I know if I get accepted, you have Nakiri's tasks to do, and if I don't get into Totsuki, you might not have time to visit me at Yukihira's. We might not get a lot of time to hang out, but I just want you to know that I...well…" Soma stopped, as he scratched his head in confusion.
"Yukihira…" Hisako watched as the boy took a deep breath and gave her a soft look with a determined glint in his eyes
"If you ever need me for anything, just reach out to me. I don't care what time of day it is...I don't care if I am having my own problems. If you need to talk to me, I will always be there for you. No matter how big or how small your problem is, I will be there. That's a promise. You are my friend, Arato Hisako." Soma looked away in embarrassment.
Hisako's heart skipped a beat at Soma's words and she felt warmth spreading through her body as she replayed what he said in her mind. Friend? Other than Erina-sama, I wouldn't consider anyone else a friend...merely acquaintances...even for my milady, I am used to standing behind her, attending to her every task...does she consider me a friend? And yet...Soma...this complete fool..he wants to be friends...
Soma continued "I mean, its o-okay if you don't want to, I just want to give you an option in case you ne-"
"Yukihira Soma" Hisako whispered.
"Y-yes?"
"Shut up," Hisako said as she pulled him closer and hugged him tightly, with both of her hands wrapping around his back. 'This warmth...I could get used to this' as she closed her eyes and rested her chin on his shoulder.
Soma's face can't get any redder. He had never been hugged like this by a girl before and the most physical contact he had was those quick two-second hugs from Mayumi while walking back from school to Yukihira's. He never did get why Mayumi ran away immediately each time she did that…
'Shit….what do I do?! Do I just stand here with my arms hanging around my side? Crap crap crap, I must look like a complete idiot!'
Hesitantly, Soma put his left arm around Hisako's waist, and his right hand on the back of her head, slowly running his fingers through her hair. Sensing her relax from his touch, Soma smiled softly as he pulled her closer.
"So...Friends?" Soma asked tentatively.
"Of course, you idiot..friends" Hisako smiled warmly as she gave him a final squeeze before separating.
Soma grinned "Does that mean you would like to try my dishes? I have this dish that I feel is a real winner, it has dried squid tentacles and honey which I am going to put with sweet and sour sauc-"
"Don't ruin this for me Yukihira" Hisako glared, with a red aura radiating from her as she stared at Soma.
"Y-yes mam" Soma shuddered slightly "So who is it that we are trying to meet, who else has a say other than Nakiri Erina?" as he pulled the door open.
Hisako entered with Soma following close behind, and the door clicked shut behind them as they stood inside.
"Only another Nakiri…" Hisako said as she scanned the office, searching.
"A-Another?! Who?!"
…
…
…
…
"Nakiri Senzaemon, the Demon King. The grandfather of Erina-sama"
Hi everyone. Thanks for reading! I wanted to put a spin into the beginning journey for Soma, with a bit more emphasis on Hisako. As you may have noticed, Soma is a bit less clueless, and Hisako being more independent and free-thinking instead of how she was before the Stagiaire. Please let me know what you think, thanks again for reading.
