Chapter One: The Kupatana Celebration
One morning as Alexis is walking in the Outlands she spots a little jackel pup being chased by Janja an his hyenas.
"Oh don't they ever take a break?" Alexis asks in annoyance before shifting to lion form and running after Janja and his hyenas before spotting they got the pup cornered.
"Oh you jackals are so annoying! We just chased ya out of our den yesterday. And now you're back? Guess I need to make an example of ya!" Janja shouts as Alexis jumps down in front of the pup growling.
"Leave that pup alone! Are you alright young one?" Alexis asks as the pup looks at her.
"Oh not you too!" Janja says in annoyance.
"That's right. Now leave this pup be Janja!" Alexis says angrily.
"Not a chance. Wolf or no wolf we are getting that pup even if it means going through you!" Janja says as he and his hyenas get closer.
"Not today Janja!" A voice shouts as a male lion tackles Janja and growls at him.
"Hey! Hey! Easy on the fur! What're you doing in the Outlands anyway?" Janja asks as he tries to push the lion off.
"Making sure you let that pup and lioness go!" The lion shouts angrily.
"Yeah! Don't you know today's Kupatana?" A honey badger asks as he and some other animals arrive.
"Ku... Ku... Kupatana? Okay Kion. You want the jackal? He's all yours! Same with the lioness." Janja says as the lion lets him up.
"Uh okay." Kion says in confusion.
"C'mon fellas. The Lion Guard's doin' us a favor today! Merry Kupatana!" Janja shouts as and his hyenas run off.
"That was different." A bird says.
"You okay young one?" Alexis asks as she looks at the pup.
"Yes." The pup says.
"I'm glad we could help but are you okay um...?" Kion asks as he and the others look at Alexis and the pup.
"Alexis." Alexis says kindly.
"I'm Dogo. And you guys must be the Lion Guard! You're the coolest! You just looked at the hyenas and they ran away!" The pup shouts excitedly as he jumps and runs around.
"Yeah. We have that effect on no-goods." The honey badger says.
"You're safe now Dogo. But I'd stay away from Janja's territory if I were you." Kion says.
"Are you guys going back to the Pride Lands? I know I'd be safe there!" Dogo says.
"Don't you need to get back to your family Dogo?" A hippo asks.
"I'm all by myself. But I know there are lots of friendly animals in the Pride Lands! Can I please come with you?" Dogo asks as he makes a cute face.
"Well it is Kupatana. Okay Dogo. You can come. What about you Alexis? I've never seen you around before." Kion says as he looks at Alexis.
"Oh uh let's just say I live in the Outlands." Alexis says as Kion and the others except for Dogo look at her in surprise.
"You live here!? What kind of person wants to live in the Outlands?" The honey badger asks.
"Bunga!" The hippo shouts.
"But he is right. It's kind of odd for a female lion to be out here. For a lion to be out here at all." A cheetah says.
"Look I promise I'm no threat. I don't have a family anywhere near here which is why I live out here." Alexis says as she looks at the cheetah.
"Well in that case why don't you come too Alexis? Being a fellow lion I'm sure my dad won't mind you coming along." Kion says kindly.
"I don't know... but not sure I wanna go to try and go back to my den and run into Janja. Okay. I'll come with then. If only until nightfall then I can sneak back to my den without being bothered." Alexis says as dodo yips excitedly.
*Timeskip*
"You picked a great day to get chased by hyenas Dogo and to protect someone Alexis!" Bunga says as he is walking with Alexis, Beshte, and Dogo.
"I did?" Dogo asks as Alexis looks confused.
"Oh yeah. Tonight all of these baobab trees will bloom for the very first time." Beshte says happily.
"And all the animals in the Pride Lands come here to watch!" Bunga shouts excitedly.
"It's what we call Kupatana." Beshte says.
"I've heard about Kupatana. But I've never seen it! I can't wait!" Dogo says excitedly as he yips.
"It does sound lovely." Alexis says as the others come over.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa! You can't invite him to Kupatana. He's an Outlander and so is she." Fuli says as Alexis looks at her.
"I just said it sounded lovely. Not that I was going to go. I know better than to intrude like that." Alexis says.
"Outlanders never come to Kupatana. Right Kion?" Ono asks as he looks at Kion.
"Well we've never had a guest from the Outlands on Kupatana before. But Dogo's just one little jackal and Alexis is a lioness. It might be good for him to learn about Kupatana. Come on." Kion says.
"All right!" Bunga shouts as the group follows Kion.
*Timeskip*
"Here you go Dogo. You can make yourself at home on this hillside." Kion says as the group is on a hillside.
"Yeah! It's the perfect spot!" Bunga shouts excitedly.
"Just a short trot to the watering hole. And look at the view!" Beshte says.
"Okay. Well thanks." Dogo says happily.
"You can stay here with him Alexis. This way it's also not extremely far from the Outlands." Kion says.
"If it's okay I would much rather walk around. I wanna explore the new sights and smells." Alexis says as Beshte looks at her.
"Smells?" Beshte asks as Alexis nods.
"Yep. I love finding new scents such as a new flower or even a new tree. And since I'm here until nightfall I may as well kill time with a walk." Alexis says as she smiles.
"Well okay then. Welcome to the Pride Lands Alexis, Dogo. Now let's split up so we can finish our patrol in time for Kupatana. Bunga, Beshte head to the watering hole." Kion says.
"Sounds good." Beshte says.
"Ono, Fuli you're with me. We'll meet up back at the lair." Kion say as he leaves with Ono and Fuli.
"Stay safe this time Dogo." Alexis says as she runs off.
*Timeskip*
"Ah. Now this hits the spot. Soft grass, nice shady tree, and peaceful. What could be better?" Alexis says as she is laying with her eyes closed in the shade under a tree.
"Maybe attending Kupatana?" A voice asks revealing to be Kion.
"Huh? Kion?" Alexis asks as she stands up.
"I talked with my dad and he thinks you should come. You are a lion. I just didn't tell him you were from the Outlands. I wasn't sure you would want me to." Kion says as Alexis smiles.
"Thank you. I don't know what to say.. Um why are you covered in mud?" Alexis asks as she notices Kion is covered in mud.
"Don't ask. I was about to hit the watering hole before heading to Kupatana. Wanna join me? I'd really like to get to know you a little better before you leave. You're the first lion I've ever met from the Outlands." Kion says as Alexis smiles kindly.
"Sure. I could use a good bath. Water can be a bit hard to come across in the Outlands." Alexis says as Kion laughs slightly.
"Come on then." Kion says as he gestures for Alexis to follow.
*Timeskip*
"Hey. Did Dogo and his family come?" Bunga asks as Alexis is standing with him and the others.
"I don't see them." Ono says.
"Shh. It's starting." Fuli says.
"Thank you all for joining us. We're here not just the blooming of the baobab flowers but to celebrate our community. Our Kupatana. And to honor all of our roles in the Circle of Life." A male lion says as he steps forward.
"It is time." A male mandrill says as flowers begin blooming.
"And now let the Kupatana celebration... Begin?" The male lion says as Dogo and other jackels begin running while barking and growling causing the other animals to shout in fear.
"Dogo?" Alexis asks.
"I knew it." Fuli says as animals are being chased.
"Everyone! Don't be afraid! You can all help the Lion Guard by defending each other!" Kion shouts.
"Kion is right. If we stand together no Outlanders can defeat us." The male lion shouts as Alexis sees a jackel going toward a mother giraffe and her child and gets between them.
"Back away from these giraffe." Alexis says as she growls.
"And who is gonna stop me?" The jackel asks as he laughs.
"Me!" Fuli shouts as she knocks the Jackel away before Alexis gets tackled into a tree and sees a female jackel before recognizing her as Reirei.
"You? You're from the Outlands yourself. Why are you here and why are you helping the Lion Guard?" Reirei asks as Alexis tries to stand up.
"Reirei? Ah!" Alexis says in pain as she tries to put weight on her front right paw but is unable to.
"Looks like you're down for the count. Well then I won't let you go to waste." Reirei says as Alexis gives a fearful look.
"Leave her alone Reirei." Kion says as he growls at Reirei.
"Why Kion. What's got you so upset?" Reirei asks as she cowers.
"You lied to me Reirei." Kion says angrily.
"Oh no. Did we make another mistake? These Pride Land rules..." Reirei says.
"Save it. You're going back to the Outlands. All of you." Kion says as Reirei's family goes over to her.
"Just one more chance. That's all we-" Reirei then gets cut off by the male lion.
"You heard my son. Leave. Now." The male lion says.
"Oh. Simba. I think there's been a misunderstanding and besides your son's friend there is from the Outlands herself. Are you gonna make a lion go to the Outlands?" Reirei asks as Simba looks at Alexis before back at her.
"At least Alexis hasn't tried attacking anyone. She's protected people unlike all of you." Kion says as he stands in front of Alexis.
"But-" Reirei then gets cut off by Simba roaring.
"You know what they say. There's no place like home! Let's go kids!" Reirei shouts as she and her family leave.
"You okay Alexis?" Kion asks as he helps Alexis up.
"Yeah I'm fine." Alexis says before Kion goes over to Simba as Alexis starts limping trying to leave.
"Wait!" Simba shouts as Alexis looks at him.
"Huh?" Alexis asks.
"Alexis is it?" Simba asks as Alexis lowers her head slightly.
"Uh yes?" Alexis asks curiously.
"Why don't you stay? You've earned the benefit of the doubt from your actions today. Outlander or not. Besides you're injured and that wouldn't be the right thing to do to send you out like that." Simba says.
"What? Are you sure? I was only going to stay until nightfall your majesty. I may be by myself in the Outlands but I'm okay with that. I understand as an Outlander I'm not really welcome." Alexis says.
"Well as I said you've earned the benefit of the doubt. At least stay until your paw is healed. It's the least that can be done." Simba says as Kion comes over.
"Then I could get to know you some more too. I could even show you around the Pridelands. You said you liked to explore." Kion says as he smiles.
"Okay then. I accept your invitation." Alexis says happily.
"I guess this year's celebration's over." Kion says sadly.
"You kidding? Usually we just get to look at these things. Mmm. This is the best Kupatana ever." Bunga says as he is munching on the flower.
"Mmm. Have to admit. Bunga's right. These baobab blossoms are delicious." Ono says.
"You see Kion? Everything has its place." Simba says.
"Yeah. It's the Circle of Life. Happy Kupatana Dad." Kion says.
"Happy Kupatana Kion and welcome to the Pridelands Alexis." Simba says.
