Cats, Covens, and Narcissa Black
"It's too pink. Try something darker."
"Don't listen to her, Cissy. Bella's just jealous because you look so hot."
"Sirius, you can't say that!"
"Why?"
"She's your cousin, for Merlin's sake!"
"Well, sorry, Andromeda, for complimenting my cousin on her outfit."
The three Black sisters and their cousin Sirius were sitting in Narcissa's bedroom. Sirius had with him a cat he'd picked up off the streets a day earlier, and had decided to take it in. Andromeda was the one who'd suggested he call it Kara, because it meant "pure" in Greek. He'd complied.
"Guys, focus," Narcissa snapped. Her voice then returned to its usual tone, one of glamour and cheer. "Do you think it looks too showy?"
"Everything with you is too showy," Bellatrix huffed. Narcissa ignored her elder sister's comment and instead twirled in front of her full-length bedroom mirror, causing the skirt of her 50s-style gown to float elegantly in the air for a split second before settling back down again.
"Well, I think it's fine," Andromeda told her, smiling at Narcissa.
"You do know everyone will be wearing black, right?" Sirius asked. The two younger sisters turned to look at him. He raised his hands in defense. "Hey, I'm just saying. If Cissy wants to fit right in with the chicks in Knockturn Alley, that's up to her."
Narcissa spun around and gaped at him. "I do not look like them!" She gestured to Bellatrix, "Bella, tell him."
Bellatrix raised an eyebrow, but did as she was told, and looked Sirius in the eye, her face expressionless with no trace of irony. "I'll tell him something…" Bella gave a half-grin. "I agree with you," she said bluntly. Sirius grinned up at Narcissa from his perch on her bed.
"See? Even Bella agrees with me and usually she's the one who ends up looking like one of them," he said, scratching Kara's head. She gave a little purr of satisfaction.
Narcissa stomped her foot impatiently, driving the heel of her shoe into the carpet. "Seriously guys, it's my first coven meeting ever tonight and I would rather we weren't late. Okay?"
They fell (somewhat) quiet after that.
"Cissy, are you sure this is the right place?"
Dusk had finally come, and thus Narcissa, her sisters, and Sirius were headed for the meeting address. When Narcissa had explained she wanted to attend a coven gathering a day earlier, Sirius and Bellatrix were extremely against it, whereas Andromeda was all for it. She'd excitedly asked Narcissa if she could come, even offering to step in for Bellatrix since the eldest Black sister was being forced to chaperone. Narcissa had been all too happy to let her tag along.
Now the four of them stood in front of a small shack with a bright purple door. A sign pinned to the wall read "Enter if you dare." Narcissa took a deep breath.
"Positive," she said confidently. She reached out a dainty hand to push open the door. Her sisters and cousin followed her inside, scanning the run-down interior. Broken windows. Scratched-up wallpaper. Chairs that looked as if they'd collapse under the weight of a feather.
"What kind of a coven is this?" said Andromeda incredulously. Her mouth hung slightly ajar.
"A bloody awful one, that's what," replied her elder sister. "Right. Okay. I'm going back."
Bellatrix turned to leave but Narcissa grabbed her arm. "Stay," she commanded, acting like the eldest sister though she was youngest.
The dark-haired witch glared at her, but didn't argue, and the four of them circled the room. There was no one in sight.
"Wrong location?" Andromeda suggested in an attempt to be helpful. Narcissa pouted and continued to search under chairs, behind pillars, and around corners.
"I could've sworn it was here…" she mumbled under her breath. Then, almost as if an actual lightbulb appeared above her head, Narcissa got an idea.
"By the charms that bind us, mild and meek," she chanted, much to the others' confusion. "Reveal yourselves as we speak!"
And then everyone appeared. Andromeda looked around, wide-eyed with visible bewilderment. Witches and wizards alike were laughing, talking with each other, playing poker. It was like they'd been there all along.
"That worked?" Bellatrix gaped at her sister incredulously.
"Surprise, surprise…" Sirius muttered under his breath. No one paid him any attention.
A woman dressed in a long, black satin gown came up to Narcissa, holding her arms out wide as if expecting a hug. Narcissa recognized her as the leader of the coven, Mavis Hepwing.
"Darling, you made it!" Mavis exclaimed, embracing Narcissa. "And you've brought your sisters! And, pray tell, who is this young lad?"
Sirius didn't fancy being referred to as a "young lad." He straightened and puffed out his chest just a bit, trying to intimidate Mavis, yet impress her all the same.
"Sirius Black," he greeted her, offering his hand. She slipped hers into his. It felt cool and soft, unlike the other hands Sirius had shook over the years. He analyzed this woman. She couldn't be more than a year older than him. With her dark eyes and pale skin, Mavis Hepwing was beautiful. He threw her one of his most charming and seductive grins.
Without taking his eyes off her, he said to Narcissa, "I told you everyone would be wearing black."
Narcissa glanced at the other gathers, suddenly quite self conscious. But Andromeda nudged her with her elbow, whispering, "Own it."
Narcissa turned to her and grinned. She sashayed over to a nearby table, where five attractive men were playing Wizard's Chess, and sat down right on top of their game. Andromeda laughed outright, while Bellatrix rolled her eyes.
"I need a drink," she said in a huff, and then proceeded to walk over to the bar and order a Firewhisky. Despite having been annoyed at her own sister doing it, Andromeda watched Bellatrix throw a few flirts in the bartender's direction. Well, she thought, monkey see monkey do, even in this weird turn of events.
Andromeda smiled, waved to Sirius and her sisters, and then joined Bellatrix at the bar.
It was a coven meeting, after all.
