Selene Smith remembered exactly the day her curse was triggered.
At 26 years old, she was working as a part-time waitress in a fast food. The year was 1996: it was raining hard and the place was empty of people. The green eyed woman was about to end her shift when the stranger entered the bar.
A gunshot. Blood everywhere. And she thought that she was going to die, but she didn't.
One month later and her mother would tell her the truth.
The first daughter, of each generation, had been cursed: at some point, they would stop aging until they met the person that would be able to break the curse. Their soulmate.
So there she was, twenty one years later, and still young.
She was celebrating her forty sixth birthday, in another country as she was trying her best to hide to avoid attracting curious people. But this life was making her miserable. Selena had refused to fall in love with someone, she didn't want her heart to be broken if they turned out not to be her soulmate.
Staring at the flame of the candle, she made the same wish she had been making for the past twenty years. The woman threw away the candle before biting down in the slice of cake she had bought for the special occasion.
She sighed, watching outside of her window: it was raining, how ironic. She pulled out an old suitcase and opened it to access her family photo album. This was the only souvenir from them that she had left.

Selene 's last identity was Emma Jones, a woman who had moved to Europe to start a new life after her parents' death. She had rented a small apartment in the most 'quiet' place of Bucharest in Romania.
She had decided to leave France where she had been living for ten years. Usually, Selene wouldn't stay in one place for more than five years but she had really liked France, so she had decided to stay for a long time.
Her place was cozy with all the things she needed to live. She wasn't a difficult person after all she had been put through. So, for her, a place where she would be safe was considered as a home. So far, it had been four months since she had arrived here.
Grabbing the remote, she settled herself on the couch and turned on the TV. Zapping from channel to channel, she finally found satisfaction in an old Doctor Who episode that currently being broadcast.
After a while, she glanced at the clock on the wall. "Shit!" She suddenly realized that she had forgotten to meet with David – the owner of the building. He had left her a note telling her to pay the rent for this month. The day of her arrival, she had paid four months in advance, which had earned her a strange look from the man but she had offered him her beautiful smile, so he had just let it go.
She grabbed her wallet and put a sweater on before she left the apartment. Selene stumble upon David in the hallway.
"Hey, that's for the rent." she told him, as she gave him a batch of money. Selene was luck that David had some basic knowledge in English so it was easy for them to communicate. "I pay for the next four months as well."
"You're a strange woman miss Jones." the man said, with a thick Romanian accent. She cringed.
"I've been told worse." she retorted before she turned around to go back in her apartment.
Something caught the woman's attention and she noticed the figure that was walking down the stairs. She instantly recognized her new neighbor. He's been pretty quiet since he had move in, a month ago. Since he had arrived, Selene had seen him three times – from the distance He was the definition of mystery. She couldn't blame him and she wasn't the type to judge, she was herself in the same position.
She thanked David before walking up the stairs to reach her flat. As she was about to enter, a male voice spoke to her, startling her at the same time. Why did she feel warm inside?
"You forgot this."
She turned around, confused, to see who it was and immediately froze when her green eyes met his blue ones. It was her neighbor and he was handing her wallet to her. Her eyes still locked him, she slowly took her thing back before she murmured a faint "Thanks" and she quickly entered her apartment.
She had managed to lock the door before she fell on the floor, a hand on her heart. She felt the scar under her fingers and heart was beating so hard, she was scared that it would explode. She couldn't believe what had just happened, she couldn't believe her luck. Selene had just met her soulmate.
