I've honestly had the inspiration to write a fast food AU for a fandom since I started working at Wendy's, which has been for a little over half a year now.
Fast food straight up sucks, but because of it I have plenty of interesting stories that I can write out here...so that a fictional character can suffer for me. And I can replicate our Wendy's memes.
I literally got off a closing shift at like 12:40am, didn't sleep at all, and edited this. I haven't slept in around 24 hours, wish me luck y'all.
The moment her phone clock turned to five p.m. on the dot, Ahsoka placed her thumb on the fingerprint reader on the front register and clocked in to start her Friday night closing shift.
She already gave a bone-weary sigh as she walked towards the back, already dreading the inevitable hellscape of a night that is always Friday closing shifts.
"Hey, kid," Rex greeted, giving her a nod as he dropped the grill divider into the full sink. "You closing?"
"I always close on Fridays, Rexter," Ahsoka gave a huff as she shoved her bag into her preferred locker. "You?"
"Yep."
She nodded, pulling her hat over her head, taking extra care that her braids weren't stuck to the velcro as she turned to the closing manager.
"Where ya putting me, Skyguy?"
Anakin looked away from the computer, his usual confident smirk on his face. "Prep and then you're going to help Barriss on drive."
Ahsoka immediately huffed at the mention of the most hated position. "Really showing you love me there, Anakin."
"At least I gave you prep, Snips," He snorted, before he stood up. "Gotta fifty in drive."
The sixteen year old grabbed one of the few remaining headsets hanging on their thin bar and expertly slid the battery into place. She held down the on button as she slid it onto her head.
"-choosing the Order, how can I help you this evening?" Barriss' voice immediately filtered through.
Ahsoka passively listened to the customer's order as she grabbed a marker and a cookie sleeve. She headed towards the walk-in, passing by Echo who was walking out with a packet of ketchup.
"You're on sandwiches?" She asked, propping open the door with her foot.
"Yep, you?"
"Prep then drive."
Echo snorted, obviously amused because everyone knew Ahsoka- while good at drive- utterly hated it with a passion. "Good luck."
She gave a nod, making her way into the walk-in to count how many tubs of burger fixins and pre-made salads they had. Writing down the numbers next to the letter she labeled them with. With that done she walked out and to the sandwich station, opening the mini-fridge in the bottom and counting whatever was left there from throughout the day.
Once her counting was done Ahsoka pulled out an Airpod, continued her playlist, and started prep. Since she had to be done with it before ten.
Barriss didn't hate drive per say.
But she hated drive.
If you just take away the customers and the rushes and people constantly changing their order at the window, drive would probably be more tolerable after that. At least she'll have Ahsoka to help her, maybe she can convince her coworker to collect and Barris can order take…
It would certainly be more tolerable.
Handing the last customer in line their bag of food and giving a polite goodbye, Barriss walked away from the window and towards the back, She was out of two sizes of cups and medium lids, she had to get them quickly before another person came through the drive.
She passed by Ahsoka slicing tomatoes with their janky tomato slicer, meaning they were for sandwiches. Her coworker was mouthing lyrics to a song playing through the Airpod, undoubtedly, hidden under her headset.
While Barriss herself would never listen to her music until after closing, such is the rule, she knew Ahsoka didn't mind these kinds of rules much. Plo Koon also turned a blind eye as long as the customers didn't see them.
Just as she pulled the sleeve of large cups out of the box, her headset let out a beep. Barriss groaned silently. She picked up the pace with her scavenging while pushing the largest button on her headset.
"Good evening, thank you for choosing the Order. How can I help you today?"
"Can I get uhh...the number five?"
Barriss speed walked through the store and made it back to drive, placing the cups and lids down on the counter. "What size would you like that combo?"
"Let's go with medium."
"And for your drink?"
"Coke."
"Alright, would you like anything else?" Barriss kvs the order and there was a deeper beep throughout the store as the order appeared on all the monitors around the store. "Would you like to add a cookie to your order for ninety-nine cents?"
"No, I'm good thank you."
"Alright, please come to the window for your total."
Pressing the coke icon and the size needed, she let the fountain go as the car pulled up to the window. She pressed the sensor at hip-level and the window slid open. "Hi, nine twenty-five."
The man handed her his card. She selected the payment option and slid it into the chip reader. Placing the top onto the soda and placing it onto the shelf next to the window.
Barriss unfolded the to-go bag and placed the already waiting sandwich into it. She carefully took the fries Jesse was holding out towards her.
"Thank you," She swiftly, but ever so carefully, placed the fries in the bag and shoved the required napkins over them. Grabbing a straw and placing it in the bag.
The teen grabbed the card as she opened the window, handing it over to the customer. "Would you like your receipt?"
"No, thank you."
Barriss was quick to hand over the man's food and drink before moving away from the window to stock those cups.
Ahsoka glanced away from the salads she was making to the glass doors of the front, counting the headlights (the only visible parts of the cars in the dark) in drive that she could see. She looked over at Barriss to see the poor girl struggling to take orders, cash out customers, and coordinate the food.
Abandoning the salads, she made her way to the back and spotted Anakin at the manager computer, his headset off.
"Hey, Skyguy, they need help in drive," She told him.
"Alright, I'm on my way," Her foster brother grabbed his headset from the rack and slid it on, quickly moving to the drive.
Satisfied that her coworkers will be able to get through the rush with a little less stress, Ahsoka went back to placing the caps on the salads. She stacked them on the table behind her.
By the time she finished all the salads the rush had ended. Jesse had moved back to the by-now closed dining room, wiping down the tables and chairs with sanitizer water before stacking the chairs on the tables. Barriss rushed by, making a quick attempt at stocking her section before the inevitable next rush to come by.
Ahsoka quickly separated the salads she would have to put in the sandwich station and the ones she would have to carry into the walk-in. She made a few back-and-forth trips to set the salads over to the now closed salad section. Echo gave her a nod of acknowledgment as he cleaned up the crumbs on his station.
She opened the refrigerated drawers and placed the salads in their sections, using her knee to close the drawer when she was done. The rest were quickly taken into the walk-in.
"Alright, do you want to order take or collect?" Ahsoka walked up to the second monitor right next to the soda fountain. She placed her thumb on the fingerprint reader and assigned herself to it.
"Can I order take? I don't…" Barriss hesitated for a moment.
"Don't want to interact with people anymore?" The other teen finished, an amused smile on her face. "No problem, I got you."
Barriss gave a quick thanks before their headsets gave a beep. She pressed the answer button and made her way to Ahsoka's monitor.
While the other girl took the order, Ahsoka put Barriss' code into the collector's till and unfolded a to-go bag to prepare for the order.
"Please come to the window for your total," Barriss stored the order, placing a cap on the drink she prepared while taking the order. She set it on the shelf.
Ahsoka leaned into the sensor, placing her elbow on the window as the customer slowed their car to a stop. "Seven ninety-two."
The customer happily handed her his card and she passed him the medium drink in return. Sliding it into the card reader, she selected the form of payment for the order. While the payment was going through she grabbed a straw and slid it into the to-go bag that Barriss handed her, having placed the customer's food in it while she was getting payment.
"Thank you," Ahsoka took out the card and the bag, leaning against the window sensor. "Would you like your receipt?"
"No, thanks," The customer took the card and bag.
"Alright, straw is in the bag. Have a good night," The window shut as she stepped away from it. Not looking as the customer drove away.
Ahsoka looked up at the clock on the monitor above their sides shelf and groaned as it read 11:45 p.m.
"So close, but still a few hours away," She commented to Barriss, who was polishing the mini-fridge. Raising her hand up to her headset, she pushed the middle circular button. "Hey, Skyguy, what time do you want us to take down the ice cream machine?"
"How about 12:30, one of you can take down the machine and clean it and the other takes over drive."
The two teens made eye contact, considering the choice that their manager gave them.
"You can do the ice cream machine," Barriss offered. "You're quick with it and I want to get out on time."
Ahsoka gave a nod, she wanted to get out on time as well. She remembered spotting Jesse doing dishes when she walked back for lids a few minutes ago, so there was hope.
There was a loud clunking noise from the back and a series of frustrated curse words. Sounds like dishes are going great.
A beep went through their headsets and Barriss answered. "Good evening, thank you for choosing the Order. How can I help you today?"
And just like that, another rush started.
Ahsoka patiently waits for the vanilla and chocolate ice cream to drain into the metal pails. She also silently hoped that there wasn't so much in the machine that she'd have to get a separate container to get it all.
That, thankfully, wasn't the case.
Slipping the caps over the pails, Ahsoka quickly walked them to the walk-in. Setting them one on top of the other she speed walked her way back to the second, smaller sink. She turned off the water and easily picked up the large bin filled with sanitizer water.
She dumped half of it in each flavor side, watching silently as the water bubbled.
Maybe, just maybe they'll be able to get out on time.
She drained the water back into the container and turned the machine off on each side. Dumping the water into the sink, she brought the empty bin back and started to take apart the spouts and simple inner workings of the machine. She piled everything into the bin and carried it back to the sink. Setting the bin into it, she turned on the water and left it running.
Grabbing from the top of the blue rags she soaked in sanitizer water beforehand, Ahsoka wiped down the inside of the machine. Even the parts that held the sanitizer water, just to make double sure it was clean.
Once the machine was wiped down, cleaned, and polished, Ahsoka set her sights on what can be considered the home stretch of cleaning an ice cream machine.
The inner mechanics.
Putting it back together was just as easy as taking it apart and if Ahsoka was in a better mood she might have put it back together for the morning crew.
Unfortunately for the morning crew, that was not the case tonight.
Pouring the hot water out of the bin, Ahsoka used the industrial sprayer to rinse off the pieces. One-by-one she places them into the sections that hold the ice cream when in use. Once all the pieces were cleaned and put back into the machine, the black covers were put back on top.
Drying her hands, Ahsoka glanced at the closest monitor.
12:53.
"Need anything from the back?" She asked Barriss, hoping that they can finish stocking the drive thru before closing.
Things were lining up perfectly.
Ahsoka scrolled through her social media as she waited for Anakin to finish up whatever he was doing in the back. Her co-workers had already left for the night...or is it morning?
Closing always screwed up her time keeping skills.
"Alright, Snips, let's go home," Anakin went around the desk to the monitor there, clocking out. "I want to get at least a few hours of sleep."
"Stop pretending that you're actually getting sleep, Skyguy."
Her brother-figure scoffed, crumbling up his receipt and throwing it in the garbage.
While he made sure the doors were properly closed, since they sometimes liked to not close completely. Ahsoka made her way to his car, the headlights turning on as he unlocked it.
She slid into the passenger seat and slipped off her non-slip work shoes, sighing for the relief that her aching feet were receiving.
Anakin slid into the driver side. Ahsoka pulled out her phone and sent Obi-Wan a quick text that they were on their way home.
He was such a worry-wart sometimes.
"Wanna go to Dutch before we go home?" Anakin asked while backing out of his parking spot, he only parked in the front near the patio when he was giving her a ride home.
"I think you know my answer to that, Skyguy," She sent him a smirk.
Luckily for Obi-Wan's stress levels, there was a Dutch Bros on their way home.
Walking through the garage door, Ahsoka dropped her shoes onto the shoe rack before making her way to the kitchen. While Anakin made a bee-line to his room.
Probably to call Padmé.
"Good evening, my dear," Obi-Wan looked away from his laptop to give her a smile. "How was work?"
"We got out on time, which is always a plus," Ahsoka placed her coffee into the 'fridge and closed it, planning on drinking it whenever she woke up the next day before work. "Whatcha doing?"
"Just some things for my online classes."
Obi-Wan had to stop working towards his teaching degree when Qui-Gon died and he had to raise Anakin. Ahsoka never met Qui-Gon, he died before Obi-Wan fostered her. She tried to not ask too much about him since it always brought a familiar look of pain into her foster-father and brother's eyes.
Since Anakin is an adult and Ahsoka is considered "low-maintenance"-she preferred "had more common sense"- compared to Anakin. Obi-Wan had decided to pursue his teaching degree again, mostly online classes this time.
Ahsoka gave a big yawn, reaching a hand up to rub her eyes.
"I'mma head to bed," She placed a hand over her mouth to cover up a second yawn. "G'night, Obi-Wan."
"Good night, my dear."
The most unrealistic parts of this chapter is that they got out on time, that there was two people on drive, and dishes were done on time. I think we've only gotten out on time a few times and those were rare days lmao.
Don't expect any other chapters to be over 2000 words, this chapter will probably be the peak chapter on word count. Mostly because I'm putting down a lot of ground work and world building for this chapter, while the other chapter will be me recounting my experiences while working at Wendy's
I'll even spill a Wendy's tid-bit every chapter if y'all like.
