We'll be fine

Although she was never one hundred percent sure that she had to be in this intervention, she could not say no to Kathleen's desperate plea, and here she was, but things were not going well, nothing well ...

-Elliot, tell us what you need- she finally said.

-I love you- was all he said.

Olivia stood, puzzled, in her place, as if a force held her to the ground, immobile and in shock. She gazing into his eyes, with her breathing almost stopped from her, wanting to answer him, but her words did not come out ... And they were not alone.

The children of her former partner, of the person who had known to be the most important thing in her life, and who allowed him to know things that even today no one else knows, seemed to have become mere spectators of an open secret that, somehow way, most of that room knew, and none had the courage to take part in the matter. So silence reigned between them, while the main characters continued to look at each other as if time had stopped between the two.

Elliot still didn't process what had happened. All of his feelings were boiling and burning inside him, ready to explode, and that was what finally happened.

So many years hiding those three words in the depths of his being and now, in a moment of weakness, he had unconsciously let them escape. Such a private and personal feeling that everyone now knew, especially her.

His brain did not react, he was not able to formulate something that fixes, in a way, his recent confession. After a few exasperating seconds without being able to utter a word, his mind chose the closest and most truthful option:

-I love all of you - and that was precisely why he didn't want them involved in this. They didn't deserve to sink into the same black hole that he was slowly falling into.

- And I yeah … I don't think I can do this- he finally said, turning around, clumsily grabbing his car keys from the table, to get out of there.

-Elliot, listen to me, listen- Olivia asked, frustrating his escape. He couldn't refuse her voice. It was stronger than him, so he started to walk away from the door, put the keys in his jacket pocket, and backed away until he held on to the wooden bars that hid him uselessly from the rest of the onlookers.

-Everyone here in this room recognizes that something is not right ... everyone but you- she said as she approached him with real concern in her eyes, her hands trying to emphasize the point.

-What do you mean? I'm drowning… How's that for recognition ?- He questioned, turning his gaze to Olivia, admitting something he knew wouldn't help that she get away, but he needed to end this.

-Then take our hand ... Grab onto us- she begged taking his hand.

-I know, I know you are trying to help- he answered, removing his hand from hers, breaking the touch and the heat that he needed so much- I know you are all just trying to help- he said to his family, leaving behind the bars hewas holding onto, making them participate again- You are reaching out, but all you are doing is pushing me further under-- he explained, trying not to sound hurtful or ungrateful.

Olivia stood in front of him again, like some kind of debilitating weapon and protective shield at the same time, staring at him, desperately trying to make him see reason. Elliot's eyes fell on each member of his family to end on hers.

-It's like… it's like a weight that is dragging me down- he pronounced with pain in his voice, with the intention that she would finally understand- I can't do it. Liv, I am sorry- he whispered.

He could no longer resist her gaze, and he certainly did not want to continue with that intervention, so he hurried out of the room. He hated feeling cold and distant. He was really grateful, if it weren't for them he would have drowned a long time ago, but the image of his loved ones suffering, trouble or even dead, threatened his mind every time one of them tried to get close, and he could not, for nothing in the world, allow it. They would never understand, or so he believed.

So he left them all there in the room, silent, stunned until Eli spoke ...

-Dad- he yelled, when he was almost at the end of the entrance hall.

-No, let it go- Lizzie, said as she took Eli by the arm of her.

-Not. I can't lose him, ¿and if now he does something stupid because of what we did?- he said scared.

Olivia looked at the young people in front of her, to whom at some point they knew how to be part of her life, several times, until she finally spoke- I'm going- she felt that if, perhaps, she had not intervened, the result could be different, he had asked her to stay away, and she had conspired with her children.

-Thanks Olivia- Eli said, perhaps of all there he was the one who knew the least about the story between the two of them, the one who knew the least about she, he had only seen her a couple of times in these weeks in New York, but his sisters and brother fully trusted her, and he felt a connection with her that he could not explain, but that perhaps had to do with the only thing he knew, that it was she who helped him to come into the world, and somehow he had understood what everyone her brothers in one way or another knew, that she was, is and always will be the one who gives stability, who gives direction and brings his father to the mainland, because she could face him, even when there was a "radio silence" for ten years and issues that they both had to resolve in order to move forward, she would beat over his demons and save him.

She found him just as he was about to get in the car.

-Elliot- she yelled.

He stopped, and turned to see her approaching.

-Olivia- he said when they were finally face to face- Leave me alone, please.

-I'm sorry, but you are in no condition to drive, just give me the keys and I'll leave you alone- she asked.

-Yes I can.

-Elliot, don't do this, please, you know- she was pleading with him again.

-Please, let me- he repeated again, even though he knew that it was possibly hurting the woman in front of him, and he was tired of just provoking that.

-Look, I'm sorry you feel that what happened in there only pushes you lower. We didn't want to drown you, suffocate you, just-

-I know- he interrupted her, he already felt bad for having said it, although he had improved, he was still not so good at expressing himself- Thanks for being here, but I'm fine, I just need time.

She couldn't help it, and her lips twisted up, causing Elliot to ask.

-What?

-That's my line Stabler, and no, you're not okay.

-Liv ...- and silence fell between them again.

-Okay- she said as she turned to leave, she had tried, but before she managed to complete her turn, his hand on her arm stopped her.

-Liv, I swear I know, I know that not everything is fine, but I can't, I just can't drag you into this, you don't deserve it- he said as he dropped the car keys into her hand.

Her eyes dropped from his face to his hand and looked at him again. -You don't have to be strong here, not for me, not for them.

-Liv- he said in a tone that he didn't know if she had really heard him.

-El, we know who you are. Accepting that you have a problem and that you need help will not make you less, stop fighting it, you are not alone, you have us.

Elliot smiled and she asked this time.

-What?

-You called me "El", and it's the first time you've done it since we met again.

She hadn't planned it but her subconscious seems to have played a trick on her and his name had slipped from her lips as easily as in the old days.

-Oh, did you hear what I said after that?- She said to lighten the weather.

-Yes- his tone was firm- But it's not easy, Liv.

-I know, but at least try, you won't know until you do. They are scared, they can't lose you too, and somehow they feel like they are, please let us help you.

-I don't deserve you, everything I did, the way I left, God- but he couldn't keep talking because she put her thumb on his lips as her hand caressed his face- Shh, okay, I know we have a lot to solve, a lot to talk about, but let me help you, I can't lose you too, we'll be fine.

-Do you really think so?- Elliot asked, as the depth of his feelings seemed to be reflected in the brown irises that he had missed so much but that were so familiar...

Her gaze was fixed on an undetermined point and sank into the depth of the blue eyes that were in front of her, and it seemed that she had been lost for long minutes, thinking about it well, but in reality it had only been a few seconds when she said:

-Our relationship has always been complicated but at the end of the day, we're always fine, El- and for the first time she let him know that there was hope for both of them.

That the future was made of hope.
